tar help (excluding files)
Hi, All, I tried to back up my home directory today for the first time in a month or so (I back it up to zip drvie which was dead; I got a new one yesterday). I used the same command which I always do: tar -cPvzf /zip/cdj.tgz --exclude-from=.tar_exclude . .tar_exclude is a short file: .netscape/* download/* Office51/* This time it didn't exclude the files. I tried specifying patterns on the command line but this didn't work either. I checked the timestamp on /bin/tar and it says Sep 14, so it must have been updated since my last backup. Is this a known bug, or am I doing something wrong now? -Chris -- || | Christopher D. Judd, Ph.D. | | NYS Dept. of Health [EMAIL PROTECTED] | | Wadsworth Center - ESP | | P.O. The floppy light comes on straight away (and stays : on) and the system tries to boot from the floppy but fails, so goes on : to the hard drive. Sounds like the cable is reversed. Flip it over at the drive, and/or at the controller. Note that flipping at the controller does not give the same result as flipping at the drive if you're using the connector which has part of the cable twisted. And if that doesn't work try another cable. I've seen cables with the connectors poorly centered short and cause this behavior after working fine for several months. -Chris -- || | Christopher D. Printing (kernel 2.2.10)
Hi, All, I'm running potato here at work. The stock kernel-image 2.2.10 works fine and prints properly. I compiled a custom kernel in order to use the soundcard. Sound now works but printing doesn't. (I did select printing support when running make xconfig). On booting I get this message: lp: driver loaded but no devices found ls -l /dev/lp* shows: crw-rw 1 root lp 6, 0 Jul 20 1998 /dev/lp0 crw-rw 1 root lp 6, 1 Jul 20 1998 /dev/lp1 crw-rw 1 root lp 6, 2 Jul 20 1998 /dev/lp2 crw-rw 1 root lp 6, 3 Jul 20 1998 /dev/lp3 I tried specifying a parport=0x378 at the lilo boot prompt with no effect. What else is necessary to get printing to work: -Chris -- || | Christopher D. Judd, Ph.D. | | NYS Dept. of Health [EMAIL PROTECTED] | | Wadsworth Center - ESP | | P.O. X problem (slink + SiS 530)
Hi, all, I'm having a problem getting X running on my home system. It's a relatively new sytem with a SiS 530 (onboard Sis 6326AGP), running slink. The version of X is 3.3.3.1-2 (Xserver-SVGA), the Xserver started, but the screen was garbled. I could stop the server using ctrl-alt-bs. I checked the xfree86.org site, which said that the 3.3.5 supports the SiS 530. I tried downloading the Xserver-SVGA only, and installing it. This xserver starts with a root window, but I can't do anything (not even switch virtual terminals or kill the X server). I captured the output from startx, which ends thusly... System: `/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/xkbcomp -w 1 -R/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb -xkm -m us -em1 The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports: -emp -eml Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server keymap/xfree86 compiled/xfree86.xkm' I assume that the problem is in with the keyboard, not the server. What other files do I need to install and what steps need to be taken to resolve this problem? -Chris -- || | Christopher D. Sis 530 AGP and X
Hi, All, I recently upgraded by home computer and installed slink from CD. The install went smoothly except that I can't get X working (3.3.3 from netgod.net). The motherboard has a Sis 530 chipset with embedded 6326 AGP. I see from the XFree86 website that support for this was added/fixed in 3.3.5. Has anyone got this chipset working with Debian? Will I need X 3.3.5, and if so: Is anyone working on a 3.3.5 package? Can I compile it on slink or should I upgrade to potato (I run potato with no problem at work, but was going to wait for official CD's before upgrading at home to avoid a long modem session(s))? What's involved in compiling X for Debian? -Chris -- || | Christopher D. Judd, Ph.D. | | NYS Dept. of Health [EMAIL PROTECTED] | | Wadsworth Center - ESP | | P.O. AGP video on motherboard?
Hi, I am planning on upgrading my home system, starting with the motherboard/cpu. How well do motherboards with video on the motherboard work with linux (specifically debian). In particular, I've been considering the Eurone EM-5598 motherboard. This has AGP video on the motherboard (embedded SIS 6326). Will I be able to use XFree86 with this (I'm not sure how well XFree86 works with AGP yet). I'll be running kernel 2.0.36 on this box for a while still - I work on the AROS project (http//www.aros.org), and this doesn't work with 2.2 kernels yet. If this combo will not work, I'm open to alternate suggestions for a motherboard/video combo with good price/performance, or pointers to further information. -Chris -- || | Dr. Christopher D. CD writing (slink)
Hi, I have a debian system here at work which I just upgraded to slink. We recently purchased an ATAPI CD-RW (Phillips PCA362) and I'd like to record some CD's. I have a few questions on how to proceed (I've never used a CD writer before). Which kernel should I use? (I'm currently still using 2.0.34, but was considering upgrading anyway). Any (dis)advangtages/bugs in the newer kernels that I should be aware of? Can I just follow the HOW-TO, or are there some debian-specific issues to address? Are there any specific problems with this CD-RW model? -Chris -- || | Dr. Christopher D. Judd | | NYS Dept. of Health [EMAIL PROTECTED] | | Wadsworth Center - ESP | | P.O.
