generate RAM disk

2007-02-06 Thread Christian Christmann
Hi,

I want to modify the default Etch kernel-2.6.18-3-SMP by
adding the option highmem > 4 GB. In the default kernel,
this option is disabled. So, my idea was to download the
original kernel sources from kernel.org for the same version.
Then, get the config file from /boot of the Etch kernel and
use it to build the kernel from sources with the slight
difference that I enable the highmem option I need.
However, when installing a kernel with "aptitude", Debian
generates a RAM disk. So, obviously, I also need to have
that RAM disk for the kernel I build from sources.

Is there any way to generate the same RAM disk as done
by Etch but based on the sources I used to build my kernel?

Thank you.

Chris

New hardware in Etch

a default Debian Sarge. If so, where can I check that
both CPUs are running? Will /proc/cpuinfo provide

Debian and VMWare

2006-12-13 Thread Christian Christmann
Hi,

I plan to set up a Windows terminal server. In order
to easily backup the entire Windows system, I plan to install
Debian Sarge as base system, then VMWare and in VMWare
the Windows OS.

Will I get a decreased speed performance in the VMWare
Windows or will the Microsoft OS run approximately with
the same performance as when installed directly without Linux.

May I run in other problems (or restrictions) with my
Windows system when run in VMWare?

Thank you.

What I forgot to mention. On another machine running Solaris, I can
run rdesktop with "-a" without any problems. So the server seems not
to be the problem.

Problems with rdesktop

2006-12-12 Thread Christian Christmann
Hi,

I'm running rdesktop v1.3.0 on my Debian Sarge box.

When I try to connect to a Windows XP system, this
works fine with "rdesktop WINPC". However, when I specify
the color depth with "rdesktop -a 16 WINPC", the connection
is not established but I get the rdesktop usage message.
What is wrong? Why is "-a X" not accepted even though it
is explicitly mentioned in the man pages?

Can I add the additional kernel options as modules without
rebuilding my current kernel? If so, how does it work?

Thank you.

Thank you.
But when I invoke this tool, I have no option to select a CUPS printer

It seems that OpenOffice does not recognize my CUPS server.

Where do I set up the printers for OpenOffice?

You are right, after rebooting my system, the X server is not running
anymore.
Typing 'startx' as a normal user, I get the error message:

xauth: creating new authority file /home/christian/.serverauth.3054
xinit: Server error.

And 'X --version' indicates:

Hi,

IgnoreRhosts yes

PasswordAuthentication yes
PermitEmptyPasswords no

ClientAliveInterval 30
ClientAliveInterval 30
ClientAliveCountMax 4

Subsystem sftp/usr/lib/ssh/sftp-server

#--

The file /etc/shosts.equiv contains all hostnames that are a
allowed to login without password on that machine. The other
files contain the keys used in our network. All these file but
sshd_config are used in our network and are identical on all
our machines. So I suppose they are OK since I can ssh on all
other machines without any problems.

Any hints what's wrong with sshd_config and why a password
is enforced?

Automount replaces auto.master

2006-09-28 Thread Christian Christmann
Hi,

on my Sarge system I want to use automounter (autofs).
After adding the mount points and the config files to /etc/auto.master,
creating the config files ( I tool the existing auto.home and replaced
the corresponding mount point names) for each mount point and restarting
autofs everything works fine. But when I reboot my system, the file
/etc/auto.master is replaced by a default auto.master that merely contains
"/home" as mount point.

Any ideas what tool and why changes /etc/auto.master? And how I can
stop it?

Thank you.

Disk usage

2006-09-08 Thread Christian Christmann
Hi,

on my Debian system the RAID discs are partitioned like that:

/dev/md1 9.2G 8.2G 593M 94% /
tmpfs 252M 16K 252M 1% /dev/shm
/dev/md3 37G 33G 2.5G 94% /usr
/dev/md0 92M 31M 57M 36% /boot
...

How can I determine where the 8.2G of /dev/md1 are used
(and excluding the other partitions)?

When I use "du" on "/" it will also take "/usr" from /dev/md3
and other mounted directories into account.

Chris

problems with realplayer

2005-08-22 Thread Christian Christmann
Hi,

I'm trying to play some Realplayer listening samples
from the amazon.com website (using Firefox).
>From realplayer.com I've successfully downloaded and
installed the recent version of realplayer.

However, when I click on the audio sample and choose
realplay (the application I've installed), realplayer appears
on my screen but then the error message is issued:
"The content you are trying to play uses an audion codec
that is obsolete and no longer supported. Please contact
the content provider about using a supported codec."

Do you have any idea how to install and use a supported
codec or how to play the samples (format *.rm) with a
different application?

Thank you.

ipac-ng chains or rules corrupted

2005-07-10 Thread Christian Christmann
Hi,

after running my Debian box for couple of hours I get
every 5 minute a mail by cron with the content:

ipac-ng chains or rules corrupted, fix this with fetchipac -S

Running fetchipac -S I get the error message:

 calloc failed
: Cannot allocate memory

Any ideas what's wrong with ipac-ng and how to solve that
problem?

ati radeon mobility 9700

2004-12-11 Thread Christian Christmann
Hi,

I'm trying to run my notebook with the ATI Radeon
Mobilty 9700 video card. After downloading and installing
the ATI driver (from ati.com) and creating the config file
XF86Config-4 with the tool "fglrxconfig" I get the error
message when running startx:
[...]
(EE) Failed to load module "fglrx" (module does not exist, 0)

But that's not possible because the module is loaded which
lsmod can confirm:

Module SizeUsed by

Any hints how to get the x-server running?

Thanks

Hi,

I've just installed mplayer from the Sarge packages. I can play
my video files but the option fullscreen is not available. The
screen remains always in the small size.

My graphics card is a Viper 770. lsmod prints:
"nVidia Corporation NV5 [RIVA TNT2/TNT2 P

I've tried all available drivers for video in the option menu
but that didn't help.

Any ideas how to get mplayer playing in fullscreen?

Can I instead set the permission with "chmod 777" to this directory
or would this lead to a security problem?

What I actually mean is that you get the movie on the fullscreen just like
on TV. When I use the -fs option, I see no other windows but the playing
movie itself is still in a small window in the middle of my screen.

printing with cups

2004-10-30 Thread Christian Christmann
Hi,

I'm trying to install my HP printer with cups on my sarge box.
As mentioned in the documentation I use the command
'/usr/sbin/lpadmin -p LaserJet6L -E -v parallel:/dev/lp0 -m
 /usr/share/cups/model/HP-LaserJet_6L-hpijs.ppd' and get
the message:
"lpadmin: add-printer (set device) failed: client-error-not-possible"

The ppd file exists in the mentioned directory. I suppose that my
parallel port doesn't work properly. How can I check it?
Or is something else wrong with cups?

Thank you.

no access to cyrus imap server

Hi,

I've just installed the Debian cyrus imap server packages

Of course, I can ping the mailserver and also nmap tells me that

Any ideas how to solve the problem?

on my Debian box I'm running the kernel 2.6.6.
I've read somewhere that the kernel 2.6 doesn't need

Now burning CDs is running very slowly. Even if I tell

And ideas how to solve this problem?

I just find out that you can fix this problem while using
dpkg-reconfigure locales and generate the setting for your country.

The seconf problem is a broken OpenOffice package which comes with
some of the Knoppix version. In order to solve it, remove the package with
dpkg -r openoffice-de-en and install the recent version from
www.openoffice.org

Setting locale failed

2004-05-07 Thread Christian Christmann
Hi,

my resent apt-get upgrade of my German sarge system failed while installing
some locales packages.
When I now execute an upgrade the process always fails with the message:

perl: warning: Setting locale failed.
perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings:
 LANGUAGE = "de",
 LC_ALL = (unset),
 LANG = "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
are supported and installed on your system.
perl: warning: Falling back to the standard locale ("C").
locale: Cannot set LC_CTYPE to default locale: No such file or directory
locale: Cannot set LC_MESSAGES to default locale: No such file or directory
locale: Cannot set LC_ALL to default locale: No such file or directory
dpkg: error processing
/var/cache/apt/archives/kdelibs-data_4%3a3.2.2-2_all.deb (--unpack):
trying to overwrite
`/usr/share/mimelnk/application/vnd.sun.xml.calc.desktop',
which is also in package openoffice-de-en
dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)
Errors were encountered while processing:
/var/cache/apt/archives/kdelibs-data_4%3a3.2.2-2_all.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

How can I solve that problem.

Regards,

Chris
