KDE Arts and JACK

2004-12-21 Thread christian . schoenebeck
Hi!

I'm trying to configure KDE's sound system ARTS to use the JACK
Audio Connection Kit. It works fine if I launch JACK manually and
then after that change the ARTS setttings (in KDE's Control
Center) to use JACK, but I was not able to get ARTS launch JACK
automatically when KDE is started.

Has anybody already managed this to work? Or is this maybe a bug
in ARTS' JACK support? Because my system is already configured to
start JACK automatically when an arbitrary client / app tries to
connect and use it via libjack and JACK is not started already.

(I'm using KDE 3.2.3 from Sarge)

Exactly, when I connect via telnet I can list all emails without a problem,
but when I try get (RETR) one of the erroneous emails, the server just
replies with the following single line

-ERR cannot open disk file error

So no single byte of this email is transmitted and this has really nothing to
do with fetchmail, BUT the bug regarding fetchmail IMO is, that it doesn't
act like my other email clients, just ignoring this error while RETR one of
those erroneous emails and trying to proceed to RETR the next email in the
list to fetch those emails that are actually downloadable, and this has
absolutely nothing to do with my local MTA; fetchmail just dies with the
first error message trying to download one of the erroneous emails.

Or do you think this an appropriate behaviour?

Best regards
Chrisian

Yes, that was it, thanks!

No email client was able to fetch those mails (15 mails) which caused the
problem, so I had to telnet it. RETR one of those 15 messages failed on
server side, so I had no chance to look what these mails were and where they
came from. But at least DELE those mails fixed the problem.

But IMHO I still think this can be considered as a bug in fetchmail: my other
email clients just ignored those couple of mails that were stuck on the
server, fetchmail just stops processing when it got an error while trying to
RETR one of those messages. It should just ignore these and continue to fetch
the next ones.

fetchmail problem (maybe bug)

2003-11-30 Thread Christian Schoenebeck
Hi!

I'm using fetchmail 5.9.11-6.2 from woody since a while without any problems,
but now mail retrieval fails with the following error messages:

fetchmail: POP3> RETR 1
fetchmail: POP3< -ERR cannot open disk file error 2
fetchmail: cannot open disk file error 2
fetchmail: POP3> QUIT
fetchmail: POP3< +OK POP3 server closing connection
fetchmail: client/server protocol error while fetching from mail.epost.de
fetchmail: 5.9.11 querying mail.epost.de (protocol POP3) at Sun 30 Nov 2003
14:40:45 CET: poll completed
fetchmail: Query status=4 (PROTOCOL)
fetchmail: normal termination, status 4

This happened from one day to another without changing anything. I have plenty
enogh of disk space and also plenty enough free inodes so I'm clueless what
this could be or what I could do to fix it. Perhaps my mail provider changed
something, but I can read and download my mails directly with kmail without
any problems.

As it claims to be a 'protocol error' I also tried IMAP, but then I get the
following error messages:

fetchmail: client/server synchronization error while fetching from
mail.epost.de
fetchmail: 5.9.11 querying mail.epost.de (protocol IMAP) at Sun 30 Nov 2003
14:54:17 CET: poll completed
fetchmail: Query status=7 (ERROR)
fetchmail: normal termination, status 7

Any ideas or suggestions appreciated!

Please reply directly to me, because I'm not subscribed to the list at the
moment.

Thanks
Christian

If you installed it using the official woody CDs it's very unlikely that you
have an unstable source in you apt list. But to answer your question:

woody = stable
sarge = testing
sid = unstable

'cat /etc/debian_version' will show you if you're currenlty using stable or
not.

How about scanning your CDs with

Install the packages with

bug in Blackdown Java package?

2003-06-07 Thread Christian Schoenebeck
Hi!

I tried to install the Blackdown Java packages, but setting up j2re1.4 fails:

Setting up j2re1.4 (1.4.0.99beta-1) ...

Shouldn't that script at least check if there is a /usr/lib/mozilla directory

Of course you can. Setting up samba is pretty much straightforward. The
quickest way is just to use the default smb.conf. You then just have to add
users with their password to samba's own password list (if you don't chose
PAM in the samba installation dialog, else you don't have to do that either)
with

smbpasswd -a USER

and they should then have access at least to their home directories. But of
course you should adjust smb.conf to your needs. It already contains a lot of
comments and examples and you can get deeper infos with: 'man smb.conf'

Very odd! Which boot loader are you using? If it's lilo then edit lilo.conf
and look for the line

append="... hdx=ide-scsi ... "

where x is the IDE controller port. So just remove that 'hdx' entry for your
zip drive. Don't forget to run lilo after that.

I dont't think you have a target called 'SNAT' by default in your NAT

Actually the problem is that no vendor gives information about which
chipset their using, so I need a recommendation for the extact vendor and
type of one card.

BTW, I read somewhere that the Prism chipsets would consume a lot of
power and would have a lower range compared to others.

First copy the configuration of your working kernel version to the source dir of your
new kernel like this:

cp /boot/config-2.4.18-k7 /usr/src/kernel-source-2.4.20/.config

then

make oldconfig

This is needed if you want to use devices at boot time (e.g. SCSI). The given image
file should then contain such modules.

Play a bit with xvidtune and if your satisfied with one setting, then
add those to your /etc/x11/XF86Config-4. You could add one or more new
video modes to your monitor section like this:

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Generic Monitor"
HorizSync 30-69
VertRefresh 50-120
Option "DPMS"

# 1024x768 @ 82 Hz, 65.18 kHz hsync
Mode "1024x768c"
DotClock85
HTimings1024 1056 1176 1304
VTimings768 772 775 795
EndMode

...

EndSection

Of course you can call the video mode(s) whatever you want, but I always
use to name it to the resolution plus "c" for "custom". Then you can use
this video mode in your display modes in the screen section:

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "Generic Video Card"
Monitor "Generic Monitor"
DefaultDepth24

...

SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1024x768c" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768c" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
EndSection

Don't forget to set your default depth and that's it!

Christian

You know what's fussing me the most? Why don't people face their
critical theories to the people who are actually responsible for it
before making it public? It's always good to make your own ideas,
opinions and raise critics about something - that's the only way for
improvements and going on forward, but if you are going to make your
critics public to thousands or even millions of people it's very unfair
and lazy not even to verify your critics when the other side won't get
the chance to disprove it. Unfortunately most people are still so green
to believe in such statements without also looking for other opinions.

Correct, e.g. more efficient in floating point operations than an Intel,
which you will appreciate in multimedia apps, but there are also
commercial apps which are specialized for Intel and only for Intel. So
it might also be dependend on which applications you're going to use.
But usually I would prefer AMD.

I never used a matrox, but it's strength lies AFAIK in 2D and TV out
quality. If you need a good 3D card (e.g. if you're a gamer) then I
guess it would be a better idea to buy an ATI which seems to have
slightly better performance than NVidia based cards at the moment.

Depends on what you're doing. Usually most people don't spend too much
consideration on their sound card. If you just want to know if they're
supported - Soundblaster is very well supported. But if you want to make
music you probably want to look for a better card or even an external
audio interface. No matter which card you'll prefer, I recommend it is
mentioned on this list:

Nowadays? Of course on low-end computers, I don't remember a time when
that was not the case, but you also have to see the aspect that
computers are now as cheap as never before. There was a time when you
had to spend more than 5000$ for a lame 8088 (not even mentioning it's
poor capabilies). And today, if you were still willing to spend those
5000$ ... do you think you'd have to fear poor components?

Of course, you just established a connection to that port at this
moment. It's up to you to type in a command that the service will
respond on. So you have to know or to guess what the protocol looks
like. That's why I called it 'fiddling'. Just to get an impression what
I'm talking about, establish a telnet connection to any webserver (port
80) and then type "HEAD / HTTP/1.0" and the server will return it's
identification, version, etc. or try "GET /" and you will get the start
page of this server in plain text.

Again, there are several trojans that use that specific port e.g.:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/backdoor.gapin.html
http://www.simovits.com/trojans/tr_data/y935.html

Google will tell you more! :)

Is it a Dell system?

As this is not known to me as a standard service, it could be either
Dell's monitoring software or a trojan. There's a VB trojan that uses
this port.

Fiddling with 'telnet host port' can also help in such cases.

You're speaking about the kernel driver, right? You also need to install
the nvidia-glx package and then modify your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 like
the following description from the nvidia-glx readme file:

If you already have an XF86Config file working with a different driver
(such as the 'nv' or 'vesa' driver), then all you need to do is find
the relevant Device section and replace the line:

   Driver "nv"
(or Driver "vesa")

with

   Driver "nvidia"

In the Module section, make sure you have:

   Load "glx"

You should also remove the following lines:

   Load "dri"
  Load "GLcore"

Note: if you have version 4.x of the X server (you can check this with
'dpkg --status xserver-common'), which is most probably the case, then
you have to edit XF86Config-4 instead of XF86Config.

Christian

First of all, if your CDs are still mentioned in /etc/apt/sources.list,
then your CDs will be the primary source for installing new packages, as
long as there are no newer versions in the Debian archive and / or you
don't have added sources for a younger distribution version (testing /
unstable). In the latter cases the packages will be fetched from the
net. So first have a look if entries like these exist in your sources
list:

deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 2.2 r3 _Potato_ - Official i386 Binary-3
(20010427)]/ unstable contrib main non-US/contrib non-US/main
deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 2.2 r3 _Potato_ - Official i386 Binary-2
(20010427)]/ unstable contrib main non-US/contrib non-US/main
deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 2.2 r3 _Potato_ - Official i386 Binary-1
(20010427)]/ unstable contrib main non-US/contrib non-US/main

If not you can use apt-cdrom to add all your CDs, so you don't need to
edit that by hand.

Beside that you can define priorities for your sources in
/etc/apt/preferences. Create it if doesn't already exist. You can set
your prefered distribution version and that way you can use e.g.
packages from testing by default and if needed you can also install
packages from unstable with 'apt-get install -t unstable '. For
using packages from testing by default /etc/apt/preferences would look
like this:

# this lowers the priority level of unstable packages
Package: *
Pin: release a=unstable
Pin-Priority: 50

And of course you can also set versions for single packages. See 'man
apt_preferences' for details.

Christian

You have to run binaries either with full qualified path like:

/usr/src/modules/nvidia-kernel-1.0.2880/Debian/rules binary_modules

Or if you alreay changed to that directory this way:

./rules binary_modules

The startup script for basic network is /etc/init.d/networking.
But adding your NICs to /etc/network/interfaces should be all you have
to do. It should look like this:

# The loopback interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# 1st NIC
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.200.7
netmask 255.255.255.0

# 2nd NIC

Ok, I finally did it that way:

myisp_smarthost:
  driver = domainlist
  transport = remote_smtp
  senders = [EMAIL PROTECTED]
  route_list = *  my.isp.com  bydns_a

That way we don't have to add new hosts to the list everytime a new one
rejects mails from us. We just choose another mail address (already put to
the 'senders' list) within our MUA for explicitly sending mail via relay host
to those sites.

Thanks for your help!

Exim using relay host

2002-11-01 Thread Christian Schoenebeck
Hi!

I want Exim to send emails for some specific users over my ISP's SMTP server
instead of sending them directly. I added following router at the top of the
routers setup to check the senders address and if it matches one of the
'senders' list, it should send their mail via SMTP over my.isp.com:

myisp_smarthost:
  driver = lookuphost
  transport = remote_smtp
  senders = [EMAIL PROTECTED];[EMAIL PROTECTED]
  fallback_hosts = my.isp.com

But that didn't work. It's still sending their mails directly to their
destinations instead of using my.isp.com. What's wrong?

Thanks in advance!

Ok, I did that, now mails matching above rule are stuck in the local queue.
This is what /var/log/exim/mainlog says:

D=userforward defer (-11): error in forward file (filtering not enabled):

Any ideas?

exim (.forward)

2002-08-30 Thread Christian Schoenebeck

Hi!

How do I handle a .forward file if I configured exim to use maildir format
instead of mbox? the 'save' command in a .forward file doesn't seem to work.

If I try this for example:
==
# Exim filter

if error_message then finish endif

if $header_subject: contains "this is a test"
then
save $home/Maildir/.TestFolder
endif
==

I get an error mail like:
==
Message x has been frozen.
The sender is <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>.

The following address(es) have yet to be delivered:
  /home/me/Maildir/.TestFolder : mailbox
/home/me/Maildir/.TestFolder is not a regular file
==

So is there a way to save messages in maildir format? The only purpose this
.forward file should serve is to bring the messages in the appropriate
subfolder of my maildir. Is there maybe another way to do that?

Thanks for replies,

You can mount an ISO image on a Linux System with

mount -t iso9660 -o ro,loop=/dev/loop0 your.iso /cdrom

but of course that implies that you already have some Linux box where you can
mount the ISO and you have somehow access from your new box to that Linux

tv out in general

Hi!

So far I only had the opportunity to test a few graphic cards with
tv out (e.g. Asus V6600, 3D Savage something), but all produced a

more worse - an inaccurate picture size (either too small or too big).

Is this a general problem or are there graphic cards with an
accurate tv picture?

I also messed a little bit around with nvtv, but wasn't able to
adjust it satisfiable.

KDevelop starting problems

2002-06-16 Thread Christian Schoenebeck
Hi!

I'm using KDevelop for the 1st time and I have some small starting problems.
I just tried to compile some hello-world-app but got this error:

checking for KDE... configure: error:
in the prefix, you've chosen, are no KDE headers installed. This will
fail.
So, check this please and use another prefix!

Ok, I noticed that 'KDE 2.x-Directory' (includes/libraries) in the KDevelop
settings has not been set yet, so I tried some directories (e.g.
/usr/include/kde, usr/lib/kde2) but I always get the error message that the
chosen directory would not be the kde root directory.

I read the docs but they're all mentioning the /opt/kde2 directory which
isn't existent on a Debian system.

So, what Directory should be set for the 'KDE 2.x-Directory'? Do I have to
create a symlink /opt/kde2 -> /somewhere?

Thanks,

Christian Schoenebeck

I'm not sure what you mean with 'activated'. How can I determine it?

All I can say is that the kernel is of course compiled with unix98 pty and
and /dev/pts support. I also tried to mount it with 'mount -t devpts' but
that didn't make any change. I still get the same error messages.

pppoe

2002-05-29 Thread Christian Schoenebeck
Hi!

I need your help once again. I can't connect to my DSL provider. I modified
everything as described in the docs and tried 'pon dsl-provider' as root.
This what the logs are saying:

pppd[1628]: pppd 2.4.1 started by root, uid 0
pppd[1628]: Serial connection established.
modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module tty-ldisc-3
pppd[1628]: Couldn't set tty to PPP discipline: Invalid argument
...
pppoe[1629]: PADS: Service-Name: ''
pppoe[1629]: PPP session is 5024
pppoe[1629]: read (asyncReadFromPPP): Input/output error
pppoe[1629]: Sent PADT

So what is the purpose of this tty-ldisc-3 module? Do I need it for pppoe?

And another question: the username my provider sent me contains a slash (/)
int it. Should that be a problem? Or is that a sign that I'll be only
able to connect to them with their windows dial software?

Thanks for your time!

Ok, got it. In the actual device.ipppX default script in woody the
$LEADINGZERO variable is completely missing. That was the problem. I was used

I know, maybe I haven't explained exactly enough what I meant and also this
doesn't explain the purpose of the isdn.conf block above, but doesn't
matter...

Thank you anyway!

Ok, got it. In the actual woody version of the default device.ipppX script
the $LEADINGZERO variable is completely missing. I was used to the potato
version where you must not add the leading zero to ther REMOTEMSN, because it
was done by the script. Now you have to.
I'm just wondering why the comments have not been changed.

isdn (ipppd)

2002-05-21 Thread Christian Schoenebeck
Hi!

I'm fighting with the problem that ipppd doesn't connect correctly to my ISP.
It dials, connects, but also disconnects immediately after that. So I had a
look at /var/log/isdn/isdnlog and noticed that ipppd calls the wrong number.
Instead of just calling REMOTEMSN, it always calls:

+COUNTRYCODE AREACODE/REMOTEMSN

and also cuts the last number(s) in REMOTEMSN to a 9 digit number. Is this
the normal behaviour, and if yes, where can I change it.

And as I'm already asking: ipppd (unlike pppd) handles just one ISP number,
right? Then what is the sense behind the last block of /etc/isdn/isdn.conf:
...
[NUMBER]
NUMBER = 019282500
ALIAS = surflos Internet by Call
COMMENT1 = 01019019282500 (User:beliebig; pw:beliebig)

[NUMBER]
NUMBER = 01929
ALIAS = 01019Freenet
COMMENT1 = 0101901929 (User:beliebig; pw:beliebig) (Mobilcom)

Future purpose?

No question is really stupid. I also enabled this option, although it
shouldn't have an effect on it. I found something in another thread and
compiled apm as module, added 'apm power_off=1' to /etc/modules, but guess
what - didn't help to power off.

I gave up now and got back to 2.2.19pre17 kernel... :(((
But I don't get it, why it works with 2.2.x and not with 2.4.x.

Ok, that worked!

But on another machine I have a similar problem: I compiled 2.4.17 kernel and
now it hangs instead of powering off.

It has an Asus SP98AGP-X mainboard and since it only has a 200 MHz processor
I compiled the kernel-package on my Athlon 1000 machine, copied it to the 200
MHz machine and installed it with 'dpkg -i'. Also I upgraded that machine to
woody some weeks ago. Has that anything to do with it?

I already tried APM, then APM with 'use real mode APM BIOS call to power off'
option and finally I tried ACPI instead of APM - didn't make any change.

Does anybody have an idea?

Beside the pure router functionality the machine provides some other basic
stuff like bind, apache (just for some custom cgi scripts to control the
machine by browser), postfix and fetchmail (for automatic mail exchange when
internet connection established) etc.
This all produces a high grade of dependencies, so I don't think I can reduce

I already did that. Delayed the jobs by some minutes, running cron.daily

Hi!

I'm using anacron on my router (just an old 486) and everytime anacron is
running a job, it's hard to do anything else with it (e.g. takes about 5
seconds or so just to get a login prompt and it takes a minute or more to get
a small internet site). I know anacron is running its jobs with 'nice' by
default so it should already have a very low process priority but can I do
anything to improve this behaviour?

I've compiled 2.4.17 kernel as kernel-image package on my woody machine and

after that it refused to load modules ("Can't locate module...").

lsmod and even modconf doesn't list any module, so I tried 'depmod -ae

the file is empty.

All client machines use only one DNS server and that's the
internet router. So it must be something else. But what about
these 'root servers'? I wrote them to a config file as mentioned
in the DNS-HOWTO, can it be that bind tries to contact them every
time on a DNS query and is this perhaps the reason why it takes so

Hmmm... I don't know! :) All I can say is that I wrote the bind config files
as described in the DNS-HOWTO. There's nothing more I can tell you

But for what reason does reverse-lookup matter? Because we just
have a private network with a private IP adress adea.

Agga? IP aliasing? What's that? However, doesn't dnscache also use

I configured pppd for dial on demand, but how can I get pppd to start
automaticaly
on boot time without immediately establishing a connection, but to wait
until there's
a demand for it?

I renamed /etc/ppp/no_ppp_on_boot to /etc/ppp/ppp_on_boot and chmoded it to
a+x to be executed by /etc/init.d/ppp on startup. So, I don't know why it
establishs
a connection anyway, because all the script does is to call 'pppd call
provider' and
if I do that manualy by typing it, pppd starts but waits for demand. So,
what do I
have to change?

DNS forwarding

2001-09-29 Thread Christian Schoenebeck
Hi!

I configured one Debian box as an internet router for our local network,
but I've got a little problem with DNS. I installed bind 8.1x on this router
for handling DNS queries from all clients and created configuration files
as described in the DNS-HOWTO. Now it works, but it takes a long
time (about 10 or more seconds) till the clients get their answers to their
DNS queries. So, isn't there a simpler program just for DNS forwarding?
Because DNS works very fast on the internet router itself. Because it
always uses DNS servers from the actual ISP. If I try to ping what DNS
adress ever directly on the router, I immediately got the corresponding
IP adress. So, it would be perfect, if there's a program which simply
uses the local active adress resolution instead of communicating with
it's own DNS servers declared in some of it's config files.

Thanks in advance for help!

What? =0 You don't mean I have to download newer dev libs for that, do
you? But I now read that I also have to get the so called 'Cyrus SASL
libraries', so what packages do I actually need to download/install? Or
would you recommend me to simply use another MTA?

Cool, that did it (both)! :)

postfix and smarthost

2001-09-13 Thread Christian Schoenebeck
Hi!

What do I have to do to deliver all outgoing mails to a smarthost
via smtp-auth?

Someone told me i have to use a rather *new* version of postfix
compiled with SASL-Authentification support. Is this the case
with Potato r3 or do I have to get a newer version of this package
and/or recompile it?

modem noise

2001-09-12 Thread Christian Schoenebeck
How can I stop my modem to make noise after establishing connection?
And another question relating to that: Under Windows I added "s11=30"
to the advanced setup of my connection to speed up the dial process,
where do I have to add this under linux?

Ok, I can configure postfix to send all outgoing users' mails to one
smtp relay host of an ISP, but I can't see a way to get postfix to
fetch mails from several ISPs or have I overseen something?
Again, do I have to use fetchmail for this???

mail server

2001-09-10 Thread Christian Schoenebeck
Hi everybody!

I want to configurate a linux box as the central mail server in our local
and private network.
It's got a dialup connection and is therefore not always connected to the
internet. It should
be able to fetch emails of all users from several ISPs and of course to send
outgoing mails
when a connection is established.

Can someone roughly tell me how to do it?

Do I have to configurate exim just for local mail, then fetcbmail to fetch
all emails on dialup?
What program do I need to send outgoing mails on dialup? Or can I use the
MTA (exim)
for this? Questions over questions. :)

Thanks in advance for any help,

Christian

AW: some general (samba) questions

2000-10-10 Thread Christian Schoenebeck
I did as you told me, but it doesn't work.
The user's line also doesn't have the X... part, but just any other types.
Do I have to delete the user and recreate him to get him work with an empty
password?

Edit /etc/samba/smbpasswd and change the user's line from
bob:3000:::[U
]:LCT-363F96AD:
to
bob:3000:NO
PASSWORDX::[U

some general (samba) questions

2000-10-06 Thread Christian Schoenebeck
Hello everybody,

I've got some questions. Hope that somebody can help me with that.
Is it possible to create a samba-user with an empty password? Because if I try
so with smbpasswd the program denies the change.
How can I get a view which users are created on my linux-machine? This would be
helpful to control which users should be deleted from the system (f.g. if a
person doesn't work there anymore)?
And last question: how can I remove an user from a samba server? When I just
try "userdel " will the user also be deleted from the smbpasswd file or
do I have to take further steps to cleanly remove the user from the system?
