Thanks for the reply. I can still access the console so inspecting
~/.xsession-errors was no problem.
It seems there are no reported errors though unfortunately.

Sometimes suspend works and sometimes it doesn't I'm finding, but still
can't find a solution to the second problem.

I might just do a full reinstall at some point since I've made so many
modifications to this system it's hard to track these minor bugs down.

Issues with gnome3 after upgrade to testing

2013-12-27 Thread Daniel Dalton
Hi,

I'm experiencing two annoying issues with gnome3 after upgrading from
wheezy to testing.

1. When I suspend my computer by clicking in the top pannel under my user
name, suspend, the computer will suspend as expected. Upon resume though
the virtual consoles seem to work fine, but gnome just locks up and I can
do nothing with the desktop. As I'm blind and the screenreader stops
working at this point I can not read if there is any error message on
screen.
2. If my desktop crashes eg. in point 1, I used to be able to run:
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm3 restart
>From a console and everything would be good.
I can no longer do this. Gdm3 just seems to do nothing after being started
again. The only way I oculd get this to work is:
* log out of gnome in the top pannel
* then restart gdm3, that works ok, but restarting gdm3 while logged in
does not work.
I must restart my box to get the desktop going again. Obviously logging out
of gnome isn't an option though if it crashed in the first place.

Any advice with regards to fixing any of this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Daniel

Thanks. This sounds fairly involved, however, it turns out shift+f10 will
do what I want.

Dispite it being annoying my keyboard seems to lack this key I think
I'll stick to shift +f10 for now until I get some time to invest a few
hours in doing this.

Thanks for all your help and such a comprehensive response.

This was indeed in the BIOS, thank you so much!

How to do that though /lib/udev/keymap appears binary?

Is it possible to do this through xmodmap or siilar I only need it for X

Ok, so I haven't made any changes in there yet.

I've ran showkeys and found that the fn key has a key code.

However, when I do fn+j for example only the fn key code is noted.

While if I press the actual control key on the keyboard + j I see that
both key codes are recognised.

Does this ultimately mean that fn can't be used as a control key?

I was able to bind fn to switch virtual terminals, but not as a control
key it seemed to do nothing when I did fn+c to kill a process after
binding it as a control key.

In addition to this I've discovered that my keyboard does not have an
application key or a right windows key (the key you press to get a
context menu in a gui) It is the equivalent of right clicking
basically. Since I'm blind and I can't use a mouse this key is kind of
important. How could I bind right alt to act as this key?

I thought Lenovo were known for good keyboards Sigh

Keyboard remapping

2013-02-28 Thread Daniel Dalton
Hi,

I recently bought a new laptop.

Annoyingly the laptop function key is where you'd expect the control key
and the control key is one key in from the left.

Is it possible to make the fn key act as a control key inside of linux?
(I'd like to keep the functions of the fn key combinations if
possible).

I can avoid rhythmbox, but it'd be nice to have at least one of the gui

Anyway looks like it is going to be tricky to debug so I suppose command

suspend takes about 2 second to go into suspend and 2 second to wake
from suspend.

However, pm-hibernate does not work, but "hibernate" command does.

No idea why, I think it stopped working after I made my ssd optomisation
changes, but I couldn't track this down to anything.

Also could not find any useful logs.

Yes... I always use mpc and it works with no problem.

Also control mpd from within emacs through emms is just fine also.

Ok so it looks like mpd is not the problem.

The common problems are occurring with rhythmbox and gmpc.

So it is hard to know what is the problem, maybe a commonly used library
between the two (rhythmbox and gmpc)?

Yeah, so it does look like rhythmbox could possibly be hogging cpu.
from a quick look.

I did some research and found:
* if I run rhythmbox from the terminal here are the errors I see. (below

Ok, first of all I'm blind and it seems to be the most accessible option

happy with gnome tbh.

Hmm, I really hope it is not h/w problem:
Intel core I5 2.4 Ghz 4 gb ram 128 gb ssd.

Do you still think it's a h/w problem?

reasonable.

Some applications freezing up

2012-12-22 Thread Daniel Dalton
Hello,

When I launch some applications from within gnome 3 mainly rhythmbox and
gmpc the following occurs:
* The fan goes to pull speed.
* The desktop is locked up for about a minute
* After about a minute the fan slows back down and the desktop is no
longer frozen allowing me to use these programs.

Does anyone have some ideas why this might be occurring and how to fix
it?

Basically I can't use rhythmbox or gmpc unless I'm happy to wait a
minute first for the desktop to become unfrozen.

I'm also using debian wheezy.

Thanks in advance.

I'm using a Dell vostro 3350 machine.

At times I feel the intensity of the fan is unnecessarily high.

This occurs when for example using firefox or watching flash.

It seems most times when I restart the gui the fan returns to normal
speed.

This is a concern because it obviously will effect battery life.

So I'm wondering if this is unusual behaviour, and if so how to maybe
correct it?

I've looked at thinkafan but no idea what I'm doing to be honest.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Cheers,
Dan

Ok, so I updated the kernel to 3.6.
I then tried to install the wl driver i.e.
http://wiki.debian.org/wl

I could not install for linux 3.6.
I checked what ubuntu is using and it appears they use the module brcmsmac
http://wiki.debian.org/brcm80211

Now it seems I am getting very similar battery life estimates from powertop of
around 13 hours. Which is what I got with ubuntu.

So it seems the kernel update helped a bit.

Is it possible that the brcmsmac driver is much better with battery life?
Perhaps the wl driver does not allow me to turn off the wifi, with rfkill
(can't remember).

What are the differences between brcmsmac and wl? Is wl an open source
alternative to something that requires close source firmware?
If so is it likely that wl is still inferia to brcmsmac?

Anyway, I've solved my problem it seems, just interesting to know how I got to
this solution. :)

Thanks for everyone that helped me with this.
Cheers,
Dan

Sure, very good point.

But should the knew kernel really improve battery life by apparently 5-6 hours
(according to powertop)

Wouldn't device drivers be more or less the same on ubuntu and debian?

Thanks for your help.

Good news. So now just to figure out how ubuntu is out performing debian.

Yes, used exactly the same methods (vbetool)

Laptop battery life with 64 bit

2012-12-17 Thread Daniel Dalton
Hi,

Before I do too much investigating I was wondering if anyone might be able to
give me a simple yes/no answer to this question.

I just installed debian 64 bit amd on my Dell vostro 3350 laptop.

I turn all of the wifi bluetooth and screen off (I'm blind) and observe power
using powertop.

It reports a discharge rate of about 9W on average. On ubuntu 12.10 32 bit with
this similar configuration it was just below 6 W.
So this is quite easily 4 or 5 hours difference (I have an 80 W battery), it is
huge.

My question: does 64 bit debian use more battery power than 32 bit?
Battery life is very important to me, and it seems there isn't a whole lot of
benefit of running 64 bit for me at the current time.
I haven't set too much up just yet so it is easy to change.

Should I return to a 32 bit set up if battery life is important to me? Or is
there perhaps something that maybe isn't configured quite right on this 64 bit
system?

Finally, I'm running debian wheezey (testing).

Thanks in advance for any help.

Dan

GDM3 very slow to load gnome

2012-11-18 Thread Daniel Dalton
Hi,

I've installed gnome using tasksel and I'm running debian wheezy.
I've used rcconf and ticked gdm3 to start on boot.
However, it takes an incredibly long time to load gnome. From the point
where gdm3 is invoked to the desktop coming up (I have auto log in), is
over a minute. I am using a core I5 2.4 GHZ machine with 4 Gb of ram so
I'd expect it to be a bit faster. My netbook seems to load the GUI in
about half the time it takes on this machine.
Does anyone know how I can solve this problem?

It seems that the first time I invoke gdm3 whether it be automatically
on a boot or if I disable it from auto starting and then run the init
script myself is very slow, but restarting the gdm3 server after the
first time it has been started works in about 15-20 seconds.
So it is just the very first time each boot gdm3 is ran which is causing
me these problems.
I'm also using gnome 3, but I've set it to use fallback mode since I'm
blind and rather the old interface for accessibility, but I thought that
couldn't be the problem.

Thank you for any help.
Daniel

Using a proxy with iceweasel

2012-09-02 Thread Daniel Dalton
Hi,

I am connecting to a wifi network which uses a proxy server. If I export
the http_proxy variable correctly in /etc/bash.bashrc the proxy server
is working correctly for command line browsers such as lynx.

However, if I set the iceweasel proxy setting to "use system proxy
server settings" it does not work. If I set the proxy server manually in
iceweasel it does work.
I connected to a variety of wifi networks though so I don't want to have
to keep changing my proxy server settings manually in iceweasel. (I
check that I'm connected to this particular network before setting
http_proxy in /etc/bash.bashrc)

Also, the http_proxy variable appears to be set in the GUI (I open
gnome-terminal and type "echo $http_proxy") to verify this.

So, my question is how to make iceweasel use the settings from
http_proxy environment variable, so I don't need to update settings for
different network
profiles by hand?

Thanks for any answers in advance.

Cheers,
Dan

Oh potentially allowing the hot keys to function? I'll look into that

Hard blocked: no

Interestingly when I bring down eth1 (the wifi interface), and rfkill
block wifi, it says:
daniel@debian-laptop:~$ sudo rfkill list
1: dell-wifi: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: yes
Hard blocked: no

So maybe it is actually working, but what makes me worried is that I can
do ifup eth1 and the interface comes up with no problems... On my old
laptop this was not the case and when blocked, all sorts of nasty error
messages would be present.

BTW, the wifi according to rfkill list is still soft block again once I
bring up the interface eth1, remembering that I blocked wifi just before
with rfkill block wifi, (I have not ran an rfkill unblock wifi) command
yet. So ultimately the wifi is working normally even though rfkill says
it's "soft blocked"...

Disabling wifi to save battery

2011-10-08 Thread Daniel Dalton
Hi,

I've recently purchased a Dell vostro 3350 laptop, and to save battery,
I was planning to disable wifi, when it wasn't required. On my old
laptop I could use the rfkill package like so:
rfkill block wifi

But it seems to have no effect on my Dell. The wifi hot key on the
laptop does not seem to work either (from the console). Does anyone have
any other ideas? If I do ifdown eth1 to bring down wifi, is it likely
the wifi will still be consuming significant battery?

Thanks for any help,
Dan

Problems connecting to WPA2 networks

2010-11-23 Thread Daniel Dalton

Hi,

I'm having difficulty connecting to a WPA2 enterprise network. The
system is fine connecting to standard WPA and open networks, but refuses
to connect to my school's WPA2 network.
We tried with another machine using different wireless chipset and that
works fine.
When connecting my syslog fills with the following messages:

Regarding the wireless network device inside my netbook, here is output
of lspci:
01:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285 Wireless
Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01)

When I google Atheros Ar9285 with WPA2 I learn that there are problems
with this device. I came across the following link:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1244686

I should also say that I tested this machine with a live version of
ubuntu off the cd, with kernel 2.6.35 and experienced exactly the same
problems. I'm using wpasupplicant to connect, as well as tried with the
gui on ubuntu. No luck with any.

I'm running debian Testing (Squeeze), and kernel version:
Linux debian-eeepc 2.6.32-5-686 #1 SMP Sat Oct 30 22:47:19 UTC 2010 i686
GNU/Linux

I believe a possible solution is to use backports as suggested by the
page I pasted I believe. Is this the best solution? If so how can I
apply it to a debian system?
Does it look like there is a problem with the atheros drivers for this
device...?

Finally, if required below my name is my Wpa_supplicant configuration
along with my /etc/network/interfaces file.

If anyone can assist me with this issue I'd greatly appreciate it!

Cheers,
Dan

stop automatic checkdisk on boot

2010-02-26 Thread Daniel Dalton
Every 20 odd boots my system does a checkdisk scan of sda5 (root file
system) and sda7 /home. As it's a laptop and I need fast booting, how
can I stop these checks all together? I tried setting the 6th field of
fstab to 0 for both partitions. I thought it was working, but it seemed
to do one check just before, so I'm concerned it's not working. Or is
this just a one off? It's possible I failed to shutdown the machine
correctly. I forget now.

Thanks,

Ah yes, and the readme proved very useful. I've got it all working with
wpa_supplicant now. It works well on my home net, so lets hope it
connects to open wifi:) I'm very confident it will as I'm using roaming
mode.

I did try wicd-curses, but as I'm blind it didn't seem to work great
with speakup. It was manageable, but wpa_supplicant works far better for
me.

Thanks for everyone's help!

wireless from the command line

2010-02-26 Thread Daniel Dalton
Hi,

I've had a good look around and still can't work this one out. Does
anyone know how to configure wifi from the command line? I'm currently
using wicd, so all my hardware is supported, however, as I rarely start
X I would prefer to manage wifi connections through the cli.

I believe I have to use wpasupplicant. Can someone point me to a howto
that gives me a few examples of the wpasupplicant config and interfacing
it with /etc/network/interfaces.

I would like my setup to automatically connect to open networks. It
should connect to the one with the strongest signal. If that fails then
it should connect to any wpa networks if they are in range. I would like
some examples, so I can learn how to tweak the config quickly.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I'm using the asus eeepc 1008ha and
debian squeeze if that matters.

Cheers,
Dan

firewall on laptop

2010-02-06 Thread Daniel Dalton
Hi,

What is the best way to run a firewall script with lots of iptables
lines in it when a connection is put up? Eg. when I connect to ethernet

using wicd to manage all my wifi connections. Is it possible to get
this script to run every time I connect to a wifi network?

suspend on my asus eeepc

Hi,

Can someone please advise me how to suspend from the command line?

Also when my laptop lid is closed, the system suspends. I'm just on the

what program is responsible...?
Feb 3 18:16:58 debian-eeepc kernel: [ 3493.605992] Suspending

Anyway, on resuming from suspend, does anyone know how I can call a

/usr/local/bin/post-suspend. How do I do this when the laptop resumes?

eeepc booting troubles

2010-01-28 Thread Daniel Dalton
Hello everyone,

I've got myself into quite a bit of trouble.

Problem: My system no longer can boot windows and if I try booting
debian it gives errors regarding the root file system.

Here is what I did:

I booted windows for the first time with no problems, so then booted a
livecd off my usb drive and did resizing with gparted.

I resized the sda1 partition, the one in which windows resides on. I
think it may have said resize and move, this may be where the problem
lies. I'm totally blind so going off what a sighted person tells
me. Apparently it said something like resize and move.

This appeared to go fine, until I rebooted (changes were reflected in
gparted).
I got the error:
"No operating system"

I decided to install linux hoping grub would correct the problem. The
machine is running windows 7 and I told the installer to use largest
continuous free space. Then when I wrote the changes to the mbr, it said
windows vista was found. I assumed this must just be because grub hadn't
been updated for win 7 so I said yes.

Now when I boot I can choose from a grub menu:
Debian linux or debian recovery
And windows vista

I try the two debian ones and get errors regarding the root file system
and it doesn't boot more than a recovery console.

I tried the windows one, this starts a recovery program however, after
trying to recover a few times nothing changes.

So if someone could help me out I would be extremely grateful. Will it
be possible for me to get a bootable windows again or should I just
install linux to the whole disk. I kind of need windows every now and
then, so hoping I can get it booting again. Or will I have to purchase
some sort of windows cd.

Finally is there any sort of full system recovery I could do that would
help me?

I'm using the asus eeepc 1008ha.

Sorry about the very long post, I thought it was important I describe
exactly what I did.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much,

Daniel

Thanks, now with the variable exported, orca seems to run fine if

lxde/setting environment variables

2010-01-15 Thread Daniel Dalton
Hi,

I've just installed lxde and like the concept of it. I must set an
environment variable so I can run orca under the desktop. What file
should I place an export command in to export this variable to the lxde
desktop, to save me from having to export it every time before I launch
a program eg.
saving me from having to open a term, export the variable then run the
program from the term, I can just run the program from the desktop as
the var has already been exported at startup.

So what file should I look into for exporting environment variables to
lxde?

Just one quick question regarding iptables:
How do I specify an ip address to act on with -s that matches a certain

So how do I make any ip address starting with this pattern make the rule
true and therefore activated?
eg.
iptables -i INPUT -s 192.168.1.1* -p tcp --dport 22 -j ACCEPT

How do I make this work for all ips that start with 192.168.1.1, the *
doesn't work.

dpkg fails - exact errors

2009-10-27 Thread Daniel Dalton
Hi,

I've tried to remove adobe-flashplugin, with the force option, but that didn't
work, now if I take dpkg's advice and reinstall I also get errors.

Here is the errors I get with the removal:

Now here is what I get with the install of adobe-flashplugin using dpkg -i

So if anyone could tell me how to totally remove this package, so I don't get

Re: file system errors

The hard drive in the mp3 just spins up and back down when I plug the
usb in. Now it's not even showing up under /dev. Do you guys think it's
a bad hdd and it's time to get a new mp3?

Oh and when I ran badblocks, I believe there were some errors, but it
was hard to tell, because there was no output for a while then my
braille terminal was flooded with numbers.

What do you think?

Thanks,
Dan.

Sure. The mp3 is about 3 years old and it's storage method is hdd (20
gb).
It's an iriver h320... What are your thoughts?
Is this likely the issue?
How would you check if the mp3 is the problem?

file system errors

2009-09-01 Thread Daniel Dalton
Hi,

Ok, here is what I'm trying to do:
Sync music files from my computer, to my 20 gb mp3 player.
There is 8 gb of data to sync
However, midway through the sync process, the fs is set to read only as
there seem to be errors with certain files.
If I remount, I can't remove these effected files, the only way to fix
things is to make use of fsck.vfat -wa.
So, I can't continue syncing as if I get rid of the effected files, they
just come back on the next sync.
There is no problem on the ext3 file system. So how can I stop this from
happening, and get a clean sync. Do I remove the effected files from the
ext 3 fs, or is there another way to tell rsync to skip the files. How
do I see what files are causing the trouble?
I believe the file system is fat 32 on the mp3 player, this is the
command I used to make it:
sudo mkfs.vfat /dev/sdg1
Oh and here is my rsync command I use.
rsync -avz /media/daniel-external/music/ /media/disk/music

If anyone could help me out with this I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,
Dan.

rhythmbox won't stop coming up

2009-08-10 Thread Daniel Dalton
Hi,

On this system of mine, which I recently reinstalled, for various
reasons, this problem still persists. Everything was whiped except
/home, and if I log in as a different user the problem does not
occur. When gdm starts and logs in as "daniel", rhythmbox is always
launched, but minimized eg. the window doesn't pop up it just runs in
the background. Where can I stop this from happening, I looked in the
sessions options under preferences about start up apps, but didn't see
it listed there.
So how do I stop it from automatically launching rhythmbox?

I'm using gnome with gdm to log in.

Thanks,
Daniel.

system taking ages to resolve dns

2009-07-05 Thread Daniel Dalton
Hi,

I just reinstalled debian this week. It has not solved my issue of
resolving dns taking a long time. Basically the issue is: If I want to
access a dns such as google, or debian.org, it takes for ever to resolve
the dns. Whether I'm using firefox or lynx to browse the web or msmtp to
send email, the resolving of dns is over 30 seconds. If I use the ip
address though, access is almost instant. So what can I do to solve this
problem? Only occuring on my debian system, windows vista on the same
system works fine, and no one else on the network seems to have issues
like these. The issue started happening when I got my new dsl2 modem
(netgear, nb5). As I said I did a reinstall, and with the base system
and testing with lynx, I found the problem pretty much the same. So how
can I speed up dns resolution?

Thanks,
Daniel.

Well an usb display by all reports should be detected automatically. If
you just somehow at the prompt invoke brltty like:
brltty=display,device,table
display being your two letter braille driver, and device being the port
its on eg. ttyUSB, or whatever. I forget what usb is called now; I use a
usb to serial device.
table I think is optional, but your braille table en_us or en_uk are
good starting ones. This should force the installer to use text mode! So
perhaps you'll need a ps2 keyboard to initially type this???

Had a look, the rss feed didn't work in snownews, but will attempt again
when I have more time, probably I didn't read the important parts! :)

I will.

That's a valid point.

Thanks to everyone that replied I'll consider it, might wait a few
months and do it, but sure I will!

debian testing

2009-04-07 Thread Daniel Dalton
Hi,

How stable is debian testing (squeeze)? Is it worth updating to? Or
should I wait a little bit until more development has been done? I used
to run debian when it was testing, so wonder if squeez is this stable?

Daniel.

Re: problem with live-helper

2009-04-07 Thread Daniel Dalton
I'm also having problems. I'm trying to do a similar thing.

Anyone know why my generated iso doesn't contain any of the packages
from packages.list even though I did
lh_config --packages-list ~/packages.list
And file from ~/build/config/includes
aren't on the livecd either. What's going on here? I only get a very
basic system, no gui. Some of the options I used were:
-p gnome
--packages
-a i386
-d lenny
--categories main contrib non-free # should this have quotes around it?

Anyway, anyone know what I'm doing wrong? One other thing, how do I get
kernel modules installed in a livecd? And what's the best way to modify
the boot scripts? Add them in the includes directory?

Thx

Daniel.

rss and general linux discussion

2009-04-06 Thread Daniel Dalton
Hi,

Does anyone know of a general linux discussion mailing list with many
users as another source of info? Also, I'm quite busy, and would be
interested in a few rss feads to add to snownews, which would update
with new howtos for debian and just linux in general, so if I find
something cool, I can check it out. Is a such source available?

Thanks!

Daniel.

mutt mailing list

2009-04-05 Thread Daniel Dalton
Has anyone had any luck subscribing to mutt-users? I can't seem to
subscribe, I get my email returned with an error about
Mailing to remote domains not supported.

Tried with my iinet.net.au address, and gmail as well as hotmail.

Anyone know how I can join this group?

Thx

Daniel.

Great.

I'm sure it is... Perhaps not the best way: but you could mount the
partition eg.
mount /dev/sda1 /mountpoint

Now just run
a find command on /usr or whatever directory it is installed in and
delete the binaries. Otherwise just find out which start up script is
starting it and remove the call to start it on boot. This should allow
you to boot the machine then use aptitude to remove it.
Perhaps consult /etc/rcS.d/ or rcconf, or /etc/rc.local, but most likeley not...

But I would first look in the boot scripts.

Daniel.
