I can still access the console so inspecting ~/.xsession-errors was no problem. It seems there are no reported errors though unfortunately. I might just do a full reinstall at some point since I've made so many modifications to this system it's hard to track these minor bugs down. Dan
Issues with gnome3 after upgrade to testing
Hi, I'm experiencing two annoying issues with gnome3 after upgrading from wheezy to testing. 1. When I suspend my computer by clicking in the top pannel under my user name, suspend, the computer will suspend as expected. Upon resume though the virtual consoles seem to work fine, but gnome just locks up and I can do nothing with the desktop. As I'm blind and the screenreader stops working at this point I can not read if there is any error message on screen. 2. If my desktop crashes eg. in point 1, I used to be able to run: sudo /etc/init.d/gdm3 restart >From a console and everything would be good. I can no longer do this. Gdm3 just seems to do nothing after being started again. The only way I oculd get this to work is: * log out of gnome in the top pannel * then restart gdm3, that works ok, but restarting gdm3 while logged in does not work. I must restart my box to get the desktop going again. Obviously logging out of gnome isn't an option though if it crashed in the first place. Any advice with regards to fixing any of this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Daniel

This sounds fairly involved, however, it turns out shift+f10 will do what I want. Dispite it being annoying my keyboard seems to lack this key I think I'll stick to shift +f10 for now until I get some time to invest a few hours in doing this. I've ran showkeys and found that the fn key has a key code. However, when I do fn+j for example only the fn key code is noted. While if I press the actual control key on the keyboard + j I see that both key codes are recognised. Does this ultimately mean that fn can't be used as a control key? I was able to bind fn to switch virtual terminals, but not as a control key it seemed to do nothing when I did fn+c to kill a process after binding it as a control key. In addition to this I've discovered that my keyboard does not have an application key or a right windows key (the key you press to get a context menu in a gui) It is the equivalent of right clicking basically. I checked what ubuntu is using and it appears they use the module brcmsmac http://wiki.debian.org/brcm80211 Now it seems I am getting very similar battery life estimates from powertop of around 13 hours. Which is what I got with ubuntu. So it seems the kernel update helped a bit. Is it possible that the brcmsmac driver is much better with battery life? Perhaps the wl driver does not allow me to turn off the wifi, with rfkill (can't remember). What are the differences between brcmsmac and wl? Is wl an open source alternative to something that requires close source firmware? If so is it likely that wl is still inferia to brcmsmac? Laptop battery life with 64 bit
Hi, Before I do too much investigating I was wondering if anyone might be able to give me a simple yes/no answer to this question. I just installed debian 64 bit amd on my Dell vostro 3350 laptop. I turn all of the wifi bluetooth and screen off (I'm blind) and observe power using powertop. It reports a discharge rate of about 9W on average. On ubuntu 12.10 32 bit with this similar configuration it was just below 6 W. So this is quite easily 4 or 5 hours difference (I have an 80 W battery), it is huge. My question: does 64 bit debian use more battery power than 32 bit? Battery life is very important to me, and it seems there isn't a whole lot of benefit of running 64 bit for me at the current time. I haven't set too much up just yet so it is easy to change. Should I return to a 32 bit set up if battery life is important to me? Or is there perhaps something that maybe isn't configured quite right on this 64 bit system? Finally, I'm running debian wheezey (testing). Thanks in advance for any help. GDM3 very slow to load gnome
Hi, I've installed gnome using tasksel and I'm running debian wheezy. I've used rcconf and ticked gdm3 to start on boot. However, it takes an incredibly long time to load gnome. From the point where gdm3 is invoked to the desktop coming up (I have auto log in), is over a minute. I am using a core I5 2.4 GHZ machine with 4 Gb of ram so I'd expect it to be a bit faster. My netbook seems to load the GUI in about half the time it takes on this machine. Does anyone know how I can solve this problem? It seems that the first time I invoke gdm3 whether it be automatically on a boot or if I disable it from auto starting and then run the init script myself is very slow, but restarting the gdm3 server after the first time it has been started works in about 15-20 seconds. So it is just the very first time each boot gdm3 is ran which is causing me these problems. I'm also using gnome 3, but I've set it to use fallback mode since I'm blind and rather the old interface for accessibility, but I thought that couldn't be the problem. Thank you for any help. Using a proxy with iceweasel
Hi, I am connecting to a wifi network which uses a proxy server. If I export the http_proxy variable correctly in /etc/bash.bashrc the proxy server is working correctly for command line browsers such as lynx. However, if I set the iceweasel proxy setting to "use system proxy server settings" it does not work. If I set the proxy server manually in iceweasel it does work. I connected to a variety of wifi networks though so I don't want to have to keep changing my proxy server settings manually in iceweasel. (I check that I'm connected to this particular network before setting http_proxy in /etc/bash.bashrc) Also, the http_proxy variable appears to be set in the GUI (I open gnome-terminal and type "echo $http_proxy") to verify this. So, my question is how to make iceweasel use the settings from http_proxy environment variable, so I don't need to update settings for different network profiles by hand? Thanks for any answers in advance. Cheers, Dan -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? eeepc booting troubles
Hello everyone, I've got myself into quite a bit of trouble. Problem: My system no longer can boot windows and if I try booting debian it gives errors regarding the root file system. Here is what I did: I booted windows for the first time with no problems, so then booted a livecd off my usb drive and did resizing with gparted. I resized the sda1 partition, the one in which windows resides on. I think it may have said resize and move, this may be where the problem lies. I'm totally blind so going off what a sighted person tells me. Apparently it said something like resize and move. This appeared to go fine, until I rebooted (changes were reflected in gparted). I got the error: "No operating system" I decided to install linux hoping grub would correct the problem. The machine is running windows 7 and I told the installer to use largest continuous free space. Then when I wrote the changes to the mbr, it said windows vista was found. I assumed this must just be because grub hadn't been updated for win 7 so I said yes. Now when I boot I can choose from a grub menu: Debian linux or debian recovery And windows vista I try the two debian ones and get errors regarding the root file system and it doesn't boot more than a recovery console. I tried the windows one, this starts a recovery program however, after trying to recover a few times nothing changes. So if someone could help me out I would be extremely grateful. Will it be possible for me to get a bootable windows again or should I just install linux to the whole disk. I kind of need windows every now and then, so hoping I can get it booting again. Or will I have to purchase some sort of windows cd. Finally is there any sort of full system recovery I could do that would help me? I'm using the asus eeepc 1008ha. Sorry about the very long post, I thought it was important I describe exactly what I did. Any help is greatly appreciated. lxde/setting environment variables
Hi, I've just installed lxde and like the concept of it. I must set an environment variable so I can run orca under the desktop. What file should I place an export command in to export this variable to the lxde desktop, to save me from having to export it every time before I launch a program eg. saving me from having to open a term, export the variable then run the program from the term, I can just run the program from the desktop as the var has already been exported at startup. So what file should I look into for exporting environment variables to lxde? Thanks very much Dan signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Hi, Following is a list of laptops. I've narrowed it down to 3 and am considering buying one and running debian on it. How good is debian support on these machines? What is good, what is worth avoiding? I will be doing: programming, typing, msn, irc, web, email, music, virtual machines etc. Here is the list: 1. Hi, Just one quick question regarding iptables: How do I specify an ip address to act on with -s that matches a certain pattern. file system errors
Hi, Ok, here is what I'm trying to do: Sync music files from my computer, to my 20 gb mp3 player. There is 8 gb of data to sync However, midway through the sync process, the fs is set to read only as there seem to be errors with certain files. If I remount, I can't remove these effected files, the only way to fix things is to make use of fsck.vfat -wa. So, I can't continue syncing as if I get rid of the effected files, they just come back on the next sync. There is no problem on the ext3 file system. So how can I stop this from happening, and get a clean sync. Do I remove the effected files from the ext 3 fs, or is there another way to tell rsync to skip the files. How do I see what files are causing the trouble? I believe the file system is fat 32 on the mp3 player, this is the command I used to make it: sudo mkfs.vfat /dev/sdg1 Oh and here is my rsync command I use. rsync -avz /media/daniel-external/music/ /media/disk/music If anyone could help me out with this I'd greatly appreciate it. Hi, On this system of mine, which I recently reinstalled, for various reasons, this problem still persists. system taking ages to resolve dns
Hi, I just reinstalled debian this week. It has not solved my issue of resolving dns taking a long time. Basically the issue is: If I want to access a dns such as google, or debian.org, it takes for ever to resolve the dns. Whether I'm using firefox or lynx to browse the web or msmtp to send email, the resolving of dns is over 30 seconds. If I use the ip address though, access is almost instant. So what can I do to solve this problem? Only occuring on my debian system, windows vista on the same system works fine, and no one else on the network seems to have issues like these. The issue started happening when I got my new dsl2 modem (netgear, nb5). As I said I did a reinstall, and with the base system and testing with lynx, I found the problem pretty much the same. So how can I speed up dns resolution? Thanks, Daniel. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Well an usb display by all reports should be detected automatically. If you just somehow at the prompt invoke brltty like: brltty=display, device, table display being your two letter braille driver, and device being the port its on eg. ttyUSB, or whatever. I forget what usb is called now; I use a usb to serial device. table I think is optional, but your braille table en_us or en_uk are good starting ones. This should force the installer to use text mode! So perhaps you'll need a ps2 keyboard to initially type this??? Daniel. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

But I never bother. It's good to have them around as well encase you have problems with the new kernel although highly unlikely. Hi, I'm looking at doing some remaps on my system with the keymap. After reading man dumpkeys, man keymaps and man loadkeys, briefely, I was just wondering if someone could tell me where the default keymap is stored so I can back it up! And then edit it? bitlbee
Hi! I've been playing with bitlbee! It seems good, but I just have a couple quick questions about it, which would make my experience that bit better: 1. Using the msn protocol how do I set a personal message? I read somewhere there is a pse command, but this doesn't seem to exist on my version... Where can I get the latest sources from eg. is there an svn checkout? Or does anyone know how to enable this functionality? 2. Is it possible to make bitlbee set my personal message to my currently playing song using mpd? 3. Can bitlbee do offline messages? 4. Can bitlbee do nudges? If so how? Thanks! All I can recommend is to boot single user mode, sudo aptitude update sudo aptitude safe-upgrade sudo dpkg --configure gdm perhaps even aptitude remove gdm and aptitude install gdm then reboot into multy user mode. autolock console
Hi, On the standard console (alt+ctr+f1), no x session running, is it possible to run a command after a certain number of minutes where no keys have been pressed? Like the gnome screen saver, except for the console. I want to be able to run vlock after say 15 minutes with no one pressing anything on the keyboard. Thanks! debian testing
Hi, How stable is debian testing (squeeze)? Is it worth updating to? Or should I wait a little bit until more development has been done? Re: problem with live-helper
I'm also having problems. I'm trying to do a similar thing. Anyone know why my generated iso doesn't contain any of the packages from packages.list even though I did lh_config --packages-list ~/packages.list And file from ~/build/config/includes aren't on the livecd either. What's going on here? I only get a very basic system, no gui. Some of the options I used were: -p gnome --packages -a i386 -d lenny --categories main contrib non-free # should this have quotes around it? Anyway, anyone know what I'm doing wrong? One other thing, how do I get kernel modules installed in a livecd? And what's the best way to modify the boot scripts? Add them in the includes directory? Hi, Does anyone know of a general linux discussion mailing list with many users as another source of info? Also, I'm quite busy, and would be interested in a few rss feads to add to snownews, which would update with new howtos for debian and just linux in general, so if I find something cool, I can check it out. Perhaps not the best way: but you could mount the partition eg. mount /dev/sda1 /mountpoint Now just run a find command on /usr or whatever directory it is installed in and delete the binaries. Otherwise just find out which start up script is starting it and remove the call to start it on boot. This should allow you to boot the machine then use aptitude to remove it. Perhaps consult /etc/rcS.d/ or rcconf, or /etc/rc.local, but most likeley not... But I would first look in the boot scripts. Daniel. signature.asc Description: Digital signature
