Re: Blank blue screen after logging into an account for the first time with gdm and choosing window manager

2010-08-19 Thread Daniel Trebbien
I have a few more questions:

Is there anything in `.xsession-errors`? (This file is in the home
directory of the account that you are logged in as.)

I haven't checked there, actually, but I'll look.

Did you see anything in this file?

Does the problem still occur if you bring the netbook out of standby and:
* There are no programs running (your desktop will be running, as well as
gnome-panels, of course, but I mean an Internet browser, text editor, etc.)
* You do not move the mouse or type anything on the keyboard.

After the screen goes blue, if you SSH into the netbook, what do you see when
you execute:
ps -u YOURUSERNAME

Re: Blank blue screen after logging into an account for the first time with gdm and choosing window manager

2010-08-17 Thread Daniel Trebbien
When I bring my HP Mini 100 netbook out of standby, the screen flickers
on occassion, and then at some random moment in time, it seems, it will
go to a blank blue screen. The session is still active. I can SSH to the
netbook, and I can change TTYs to a virtual TTY (although the screen
remains blank blue), and CTR+ALT+DELETE will reboot.

I only have one link in alternatives for x-session-manager, and it's
pointing to /usr/bin/gnome-session, so not sure what the deal is. There
is nothing interesting in /var/log/Xorg.log, nothing in dmesg nor
 /var/log/messages. So, I'm at a loss.

 Any ideas?

Hi Aaron,

I don't know if I will be able to help, but perhaps answers to the following
questions will identify things to try:

Does this problem always occur after bringing your netbook out of standby?

In addition to the blank, blue screen, do you see the mouse cursor?

What is the timeline like? How many seconds or minutes pass until the first
flicker? How many flickers are there? How long is it until the screen shows
only blue?

Is there anything in `.xsession-errors`? (This file is in the home directory of
the account that you are logged in as.)

Blank blue screen after logging into an account for the first time with gdm choosing window manager

2010-08-14 Thread Daniel Trebbien
On one of my computers, running Debian Squeeze, I have two user
accounts. One has been used exclusively for running Nautilus and GNOME
applications. The other has been used exclusively over SSH. At
start-up, gdm automatically logs into the graphical account, but
today I decided that I wanted to use Nautilus with the other account
as well.

After gdm automatically logged me into the graphical account, I then
logged out and entered my username and password for the other account.
Once the gdm screen cleared, I immediately saw a full-screen
wizard-like GUI that was asking me to choose a window manager. There
were two options: metacity and Twm with metacity selected by
default. I unchecked Ask every time and clicked OK. That screen
disappeared, but all that I saw was a blank blue screen and the mouse
cursor. I could move the mouse and the cursor would move, but nothing
else loaded. In particular, Nautilus and the GNOME panels did not
load. I had to forcefully shut down the computer just to get out.

The content of the account's .xsession-errors file is:

/etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...
Added '/usr/bin/metacity' to list of window managers, as it is the
configured default.

So why didn't Nautilus start after I selected a window manager?

So why didn't Nautilus start after I selected a window manager?

I figured it out. For some reason, the X session manager was set to
`/usr/bin/choosewm` by default when it needed to be `/usr/bin/gnome-session`. I
corrected this with:

sudo update-alternatives --config x-session-manager

I have been seeing problem with X not starting properly without using startx. you may want to give that a try. also you may want to check the /var/log directory for Xorg.log and gdm.log (?).Running `sudo startx` appears to have the same effect as when `gdm` is starting;  I see a black screen with a single, white underscore at the top.Looking through `/var/log/gdm/:0.log` (yes, there's a colon at the beginning), the only thing that is listed as an error is:(EE) "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" Unable to query/initialize Synaptics hardware.(EE) PreInit failed for input device ""SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad""(EE) ioctl EVIOCGNAME failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device(EE) PreInit returned NULL for ""SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad""(EE) ioctl EVIOCGNAME failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device(EE) PreInit returned NULL for ""Macintosh mouse button emulation""Looking through `/var/log/Xorg.0.log`, there are similar messages:(EE) "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" Unable to query/initialize Synaptics hardware.(EE) PreInit failed for input device ""SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad""...(EE) ioctl EVIOCGNAME failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device...(EE) PreInit returned NULL for ""SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad""...(EE) PreInit returned NULL for ""Macintosh mouse button emulation""

After recent upgrade, starting gdm shows black screen

2010-04-03 Thread Daniel Trebbien

I recently upgraded my Toshiba Satellite L45-S7409, running Debian testing (Squeeze). This morning when I started my
laptop, the computer booted and I was able to use my GNOME desktop as usual. This afternoon, however, when I started my
laptop, the screen went black a short moment after I saw: Starting GNOME Display Manager: gdm.
More specifically, the laptop screen's backlight is on and all I see is a single, white underscore at the top left of
the screen (almost as if `gdm` failed to take over the display). The hard drive activity LED is flashing
even with the black screen (all black except for the single underscore character), but the graphical login
screen does not appear and typing on the keyboard has no effect on the display.

There was a change in the normal boot sequence. Normally after selecting a kernel from the GRUB
menu, all of the text that is printed on screen when the kernel loads and all output from `init` is
displayed in the same font and font size. Now after selecting a kernel, two lines appear quickly on
screen (something about ACPI) in the normal font and font size, the screen is cleared,
and subsequent output (the word kinit and all output from loading the kernel and
`init`) is displayed in a smaller font at 50 lines to a screen.

I thought that the problem was related to using a display mode that is not
supported by the screen, so, while in maintainer mode, I tried regenerating
`/etc/X11/xorg.conf` (`sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg`). I also
tried upgrading all packages to become fully up-to-date and re-installing `gdm`.

Has anyone experienced this or a related problem before and found a solution?
What should I try doing?
