Logitech Quickcam Communicate STX

2007-06-10 Thread David Dawson
Logitech Quickcam Communicate STX:

After a recent upgrade to Debian Testing, support for this camera has been
downgraded, with the result that VLC can now only display the stream at a
much lower resolution.

Formerly the resolution was an acceptable 640x480, now it is only 320x240.

Suspecting the spca5xx driver, I downgraded it to the level in Debian
Stable, but this is evidently not the issue.

The camera ID (lsusb) is: 046d:08ad Logitech, Inc.

Does anybody have an Idea how to get back the lost resolution?
Is this a Debian issue or upstream?

Thanks

No, I'm using KDE (arts) and I have set the system to autosuspend after 1
second. It's worth noting that the sound card driver allows
opening /dev/dsp (or alsa default) 7 times. So, for instance, I can be
listening to music with Xmms and still hear announcements from Saytime.
Really, Autosuspend is unnecessary.
Nope, It's just the mike capture not working.

Mike Capture not working in Debian Testing/Creative Live Soundblaster

2007-05-24 Thread David Dawson
I'm running Debian Testing and the mike capture recently stopped working.
The card is a Creative Soundblaster Live.
The problem is that the system will not allow any app to get mike audio.
On the other hand I *can* get mike audio through the card if I switch on the
mixer monitor.
I tried setting things with Alsamixer, but no go.
The sound system in the kernel (Debian 2.6.18-K7) is Alsa.

does anyone knoow a fix?
Thanks

I updated kdebase and kdelibs and ran kbuildsycoca and kcontrol is just fine
now.
The key thing was the bug report.

I'm not exactly a newbie, but as I do most things in a shell, I usually
don't have occasion to delve into the desktop settings.
This is what I got:
kcontrol: WARNING: No K menu group with X-KDE-BaseGroup=settings found !

I see that something is missing, probably from an rc file, so which one?

Thanks.
This is what I get from the above command:
kde-i18n-engb 4:3.5.6-1
kde-i18n-eo 4:3.5.6-1
kde-i18n-fr 4:3.5.6-1

Is any package there likely to be involved? If I were to add a non-broken
i18n-xxx package, would that solve the problem?.

Incidently, my mike capture is broken and I can't reconfigure sound through
the control center, Is there another way to invoke the specific sound
configuration outside the control center? (Other than by hand, which I'll
do if I get annoyed enough.)

Control Center Problems in KDE 3.5.5

2007-05-14 Thread David Dawson
I have a problem in the control center in KDE 3.5.5 with Debian Testing
(Lenny).

The app runs but the only menu item is 'Network'
everything else is gone.

I tried apt-get remove kcontrol --purge and then apt-get install ...

But this is not a fix.

Does someone have a fix for this problem?
Thanks

I use apt-get - I'm not sure how to do this in aptitude, but the command I
use in such situations (before dpkg --configure -a) is: apt-get -f install,
then configure with dpkg --configure -a, and maybe try both again.

an apt-get dselect-upgrade *might* help, but I'd suggest running apt-get -s
dselect-upgrade to check that it won't cause any problems.

I have tried dselect, but found problems as you have found; I think dselect
works similarly to aptitude.

In my experience, Kppp is better (although there is a quirk in the
configuration). Even if you don't use KDE, if you at least have the KDE
libraries, it should work and be easy to configure.

The aforementioned quirk is in the configuration of a manual login script:
It will 'forget' the last line, which refers to pppd (I seem to remember),
as soon as you go in to edit it again. It only means that you have to add
that line each time you edit the script. It ISN'T a big problem.

There's another method, too:
sbm (smart boot manager)
It comes on the Debian install disk as a floppy image which you dd to a
floppy and use it to boot from.

It is available as a package also, evidently

It doesn't create *any* video* device at all. My apps - camstream or
camorama wanted /dev/video0 and I think it was xawtv wanted /dev/video, but
I suppose that could be changed in the app setup for xawtv.

symlinking from /dev/.static/dev/video0 to /dev/video0 did not work.
there is a symlink /dev/.static/dev/video to video0, so I presume /dev/video
would be a symlink also if it existed.

I'm not sure. Maybe I can check the logs and find out. The Quickcam is
working (minimally) now and I'd like to keep on using it.

I purged spca5xx and installed gspca from the tarball and now with camorama,
I can get streaming and capture, but only at a low resolution, (176 x 144),
but at least it works.

I can get higher resolutions with camstream, but they show major defects in
the rendition, such as showing only a partial frame, or jagged lines across
the image.

Still it looks as if it can be fully supported in the future.

Thanks

Strangely, I have found that saving and reloading the .odt document cured
the problem - what do you know, eh?

I'd saved it as a .doc file and that might have provoked a problem
somewhere.

Oh well.

It is coming from 'Tools>word count'

I understand the point about not filing a bug report on 2.04.
I am keeping my sources at 'Testing', so in due course I'll get the update

Openoffice won't display whole document word count in document over 73,763 characters

2007-04-15 Thread David Dawson
I'm not sure if this is a bug in OOo, or what, but it suddenly stopped
displaying the word count in my document, when I went on typing and checked
it. I found that by selecting all text, I could get a count, but not unless
I did so; it would otherwise display 0 words 0 characters for the total.

If this is a bug I'd appreciate help filing a report. I checked the
issuezilla site and a search did not turn up this problem.

I think it might be safer to cut the document in pieces. Any advice?

Thanks

Out of interest, how long (in characters) was the document?

I have a 73,763 character document (13,318 words) and in .odt format it has
not had a problem. I *have* had problems with docs containing different
versions in .sxw format, though. I decided not to bother doing that again.

As I was writing this, I saved it as a .doc file and no problems in OO 2.04

It is old enough, but I have removed and purged hotplug some time ago.
I was aware of that issue.

That is: apt-get remove hotplug --purge

As a parenthetical note, I have an elcheapo webcam which is detected, the
module is loaded and the /dev/video0 device created just perfectly, so I am
sure udev is doing its job, in the case of that device

How to set up Logitech Quickcam Chat in Debian Testing

2007-04-15 Thread David Dawson
I'm running Debian Testing and trying to set up a Logitech Quickcam Chat.
it supposedly uses the spca5xx driver and is alleged to work.
I have installed the driver with module-assistant.

I have noticed that suddenly, the /dev/video* devices are not present (they
exist only in /dev/.static/dev/)

I might have messed up that somehow (I worked at it rather late at night) or
maybe there's a foo-foo in the system.
I am running the 2.6.18-3-k7 kernel on my K7S5A Pro/Athlon 1800+ system.
And have updated/upgraded to current Debian Testing.

Any webcam app I run (root or not) complains about no /dev/video0
or /dev/video (as the case may be) and symlinking the video* devices
in .static/dev to /dev/ won't work

lsusb shows the device is detected and this is the output:
Bus 004 Device 004: ID 046d:092e Logitech, Inc.

Any help is appreciated.

IN ANSWER TO THE POSTERS:

-It has not lately been booted from a CD I can rule that out.
-I think these might have been spurious errors at that.
-Possibly the problem was with udevd and may now have (touch wood) been
corrected by dpkg-reconfigure.
-I am doing a snapshot of the process stack every 5 minutes and logging, so
that I can capture the process that is doing the resource-hogging which
caused the user to want to re-boot his machine (I suspect something was
going wrong with an X app and really all he needed to do was kill the app)

-Thanks!

Inodes date in future - problem

2007-02-17 Thread David Dawson
Running Debian Etch on an AMD Athlon 2100+ ECS motherboard with 3 hard
disks, the 40 G original hard disk was showing inodes date in future on a
user forced fsck.
The reason the user forced the fsck was because of a system sluggishness he
suspected problems and rebooted with a forced fsck.

I have installed etch on another of his hard disks and moved over his home
directory to the new disk.

Does anyone have an idea what would have put inodes dates in the future on
this drive only and would this have caused a disk slowdown? It wouldn't be
swap issues, I think, since the machine has 2G of RAM.

Thanks

you'd be better off by installing ntp, which runs ntpd and keeps on top of
the time syncing.

The default configuration should be fine, but you can specify what time
servers to use also instead of the pool.

ext3 journal

2005-12-27 Thread David Dawson
How does one locate the ext3 journal?
In particular I want to be able to for example, remount the partition as
ext2, secure-delete the journal, fsck if required, and remount as ext3.
Is this feasible?
And if so, where exactly is the journal?
Thanks

I installed shfsmount on both machines and this works quite well.
Thanks to Anoop

NFS shares over the internet

2005-10-18 Thread David Dawson
I am experimenting with NSF mounts over the internet.
So far, the share works on the local network between my two local
machines, but only "sort of" on the remote machine.
The two local machines are running Debian Sarge and the NSF server is
running the 2.6.8-2-386 Debian kernel.
The other local machine and the remote are running 2.4.x kernels.
both local machines are connected to a router with a firewall. I have
opened up port 2049 to the remote machine (TCP & UDP).

the remote machine can ls the share, send and receive small files (say 100
bytes) but when an attempt to send or receive a larger file is made, the
konqueror process reports 'stalled' and goes into uninterruptable sleep.

Would Samba work any better? Is there a proper NSF solution?
Thanks

I am running Debian Sarge (stable now) which I keep on my timezone.
I checked around and found that timezone info (among other things) is kept
in /etc/default/rcS.
You might want to set it there. If you have tzsetup read its man page or
get it if not.

Hope this helps you.

Can't build Glade-2 apps

2005-08-05 Thread David Dawson
I have Glade and Glade-2 and am just learning the system.
I have found that I cannot build anything under Glade-2.

I am getting the following sorts of errors from the make after the ./autogen
is run. (I haven't listed them all):
in file included from /usr/include/gtk-2.0/gdk/gdkcolor.h:4,
 from /usr/include/gtk-2.0/gdk/gdk.h:30,
 from /usr/include/gtk-2.0/gtk/gtk.h:31,
 from main.c:10:
/usr/include/gtk-2.0/gdk/gdktypes.h:32:18: glib.h: No such file or directory

These headers DO exist and I have glib-1.2 and glib-2 installed.

My system is Debian Sarge, up-to-date and I am running a 2.4.23 kernel which
I compiled from source.

I am running Glade and Glade-2 under KDE.

programs built under Glade build, but ones built under Glade-2 don't.

I'd appreciate any suggestions as to how to fix this.

If I left out any crucial information please gently tell me so and I will
supply it.

Thanks
