Mark,

One thing I forgot to mention on this was that I am running unstable
with XF86 4.3, though it should work with XF86 4.2, as well.  Also, I
say use a 2.6 series kernel because the DRI and AGPGART stuff is
already in there, no need to build more modules.  Yes, it's possible.  I've
done it before.  That doesn't mean it's not a pain in my ass.  But,
honestly, the only reason why I'm running a 2.6 kernel is because I
couldn't get DRI working in a 2.4 series kernel, either.

Personally, "Give up" isn't in my vocab.  Here's what you do (and what
worked for me on my Radeon 8500):
1) download/compile/install a 2.6.0 series kernel, modularizing the
Direct Rendering stuff for Radeon, and AGPGART, and whatever your
motherboard and processor specific setup is
2) Add agpgart, *motherboard*_agp, ati_agp, *processor*_agp to
/etc/modules.
3) Reboot, make sure you didn't mess up your kernel configuration.  If
you did, go back to one and repeat.
4) add this to your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4:
    Section "Device"
    Identifier  "ATI Radeon 9700"
    Driver  "radeon"
    Option  "UseFBDev"  "true"
    Option  "AGPMode"   "4"
I'm not sure that AGPMode of 8 is supported, I'm sure somebody will
tell you once I send this.  Make sure you change the label in the
Screen configuration, too.
4) Restart X, look at /var/log/XFree86.0.log and look for this:  (II)
RADEON(0):  Somewhere around there you'll find:  (II) RADEON(0): Direct
rendering enabled (or disabled).  If you're still turning up with
nothing, e-mail the list again.

Hope this works for you, it worked for me.

Peace,
DAVE

I'm willing to give up on this card for a while. What I'd like is a
card that supports lots of unusual and low resolutions. I don't
really need 3D accel.

The solution was fairly simple. I gave up.

Several responders gave suggestions that are beyond my current
understanding. I'm going to wait until I have more in depth
understanding of Debian and Linux in general or there is a tried and
tested package.

For now I'm just going to use "vesa"

Re: Learning debian Linux

2003-11-25 Thread David Meiser

You know, Debian users need to get over this "commercial distribution" fobia.
You are all on the same side. I haven't been reading this list for a couple
of months now, and when I signed up again, the first thing I read is another
rant about RedHat. It's getting pretty boring.

Debian works for me. For other people, Mandrake, or SuSe, or RedHat or
Slackware, or Knoopix, or Gentoo might be better. I don't bother them about
their choice, but try to be a good Linux user to them. And I try to
recommend distribution depending on what they want to do with their system
and how comfortable they are with computers.

Remember, it's libre not gratis.

Well put. When I first starting using Linux, a friend of mine helped me
install debian. I don't want to necessarily say it was a huge mistake,
but it was at the time. Because Debian was so damned hard to use and
there was not a good office program (OOo was pre-1.0 and the filters
sucked), I ended up back with Win98, then 2k, and finally XP. Last
year, I finally had the time and resources to play with Linux again and
built myself a box, finally installing Mandrake. Why Mandrake? It was
an easy install to get me where I needed to be.

When I started playing with and tweaking, Mandrake wasn't enough and I
harkened back to those few months when I actually had debian working and
remembered how easy it was to upgrade/update and tweak. I installed
debian and have loved it ever since.

About 6 months ago, I obtained a laptop and put Mandrake on it, again,
because it was easy and I was unsure of the laptop. Because I was used
to the debian way, I hated Mandrake, but it was an easy install. I got
so fed up one day that I popped in a Knoppix CD. I thought about my
options and did an HD install on a 4 gb partition (on a 10 GB hdd),
leaving /home/ intact and formatting a couple of other partitions. When
Knoppix rebooted, I moved /home/ back to it's previous partition, set up
/var/ and then uninstalled all the crap that said "knoppix-" or "knx-".
It wasn't easy, I ended up having to copy a file from my Linux box and
putting it in place by hand. Total time to install/de-knoppix-ize:
about 2.5 hours. Bonus: everything was configured. Double bonus: I
had a debian system (which, I will say, still would not be properly
configured).

The point, you ask? There are multiple ways of going about things.
Mandrake is still Linux, and for newbies, Mandrake, SuSE, or RedHat are
really the only way to go. What do I envision as the next step?
Managing to get knoppix on a harddrive and then remove all the
knoppix/knx packages (which are good for a CD distro, not for a hd
install). Actually, when I purchase a new laptop in a few months,
that's what I intend to do. I'll be damned if it's not easy. And
really, to get Linux on a desktop, we don't need more packages, we need
easier setup and configuration. In my experience, that's where Mandrake
and Knoppix far exceed a traditional boot floppy or debian cd install.
If the individual has progressed in their Linux experience to a point
where they are comfortable setting up everything using dpkg or by hand,
then that's fine. But, most of us don't have that time or knowledge.
That's why Mandrake exists and so many people use it.

Peace,
DAVE

kernel-2.6.0-test9 compile issue

2003-11-02 Thread David Meiser
Hello, I am running a system where my main hdd is an external SCSI HDD
on an Adaptec AIC7881-U. In the 2.4.xx series kernel, I haven't had any
problems compiling, installing, or booting this hard drive. Recently, I
decided to give the 2.6.0-test series a try, so I downloaded the source
(via apt, of course), and tried to compile the kernel with these options:

Adaptec AIC7xxx Fast -> U160 support (New Driver)
? ?(32) Maximum number of TCQ commands per device
? ?(15000) Initial bus reset delay in milli-seconds
? ?[*] Probe for EISA and VL AIC7XXX Adapters
? ?[*] Build Adapter Firmware with Kernel Build
? ?[*] Compile in Debugging Code
? ?(0) Debug code enable mask (2047 for all debugging)
? ?[*] Decode registers during diagnostics
? ? Adaptec AIC7xxx support (old driver)
Which yields this error:

While there isn't a massive difference between the two from a user's

card that touches on audio (in my case, a Hauppage WinTV card,) ALSA
handles the situation far better than OSS. ALSA also opens up access
through mixers to more controls on the SBLive! and handles
"quadronphonic" sound better if you toss spare speakers on Line Out.
ALSA might not be ready for everyone yet, compared to the better OSS
drivers, but there are areas where it is the better choice.

All that said, what other parts of the thread seem to indicate (or are
all the threads blurring together now?) that this was a *not exactly*

Joao,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the other protocols (MSN, IRC)
come compiled into gaim.  I think that you can enable them by going into
Tools>Plugins...  I'm not sure, though, as I run Gaim from CVS, which
I would recommend.  As an added bonus, Gaim comes default with the
other protocols enabled.  I'm not sure how this runs in testing/stable, but
you can get Gaim from CVS by adding this into your sources.list:

#Gaim CVS
deb http://people.debian.org/~robot101/gaim unstable cvs
deb-src http://people.debian.org/~robot101/gaim unstable cvs

I just put up a Samba file server this weekend on a Debian SPARC box. I have

I put:
security = user
which is the default.

In the globals section I put in:
invalid users = root
valid users = laptop, W98

I created a share:
[netdisk0]
   path = /export/samba/netdisk0

   writeable = yes

On the SPARC box I did:
1. adduser for laptop and W98
2. smbpasswd -a laptop
3. smbapasswd - a W98
4. kill -SIGHUP

I restarted laptop and W98.
When I clicked the Network Neighborhood icons I found the SPARC box. In the
SPARC box icon i found netdisk0.

I didn't have much success with the security = share option. I kept being
asked for a password when I tried to access the shared resource. Huh???

I found that restarting the windoze boxes often fixed things when behavior
got stupid.

YMMV because you are using XP.

Re: Installing device drivers

2001-07-09 Thread David Meiser

1. Yes you need to unzip it. If it is a .gz file, use gunzip. If this
gives you a tar file, 'tar tvf ' will show you what is in
it, and 'tar xvf ' will extract the files.

The file I downloaded is actually a .zip, so I'm good there. However,
I'm using Win2K, so getting it onto an ext2 formatted floppy will be an
issue. Do I need to put it on an ext2 floppy or will Linux recognize an
MSDOS formatted floppy no problem?

2. Once you unzip it, what do you have? If it is a .c file, then you
have something you can use the next time you compile the kernel. If
you have a .o file, then you have a kernel module which might be
   loaded using 'insmod'.

In the .zip there are the following files:

control.adsp.ahal.apctel.optserial.aMakefile
ptmodule.c

Don't be afraid to post all the gory details to the group. Exactly what
modem is it, where did you get the driver, and what is the driver
called?

The modem is a CompUSA HSP56 modem using a PCTEL chipset. That is all
the information we were able to gather about the modem.

Did you check out http://www.linmodems.org ? or
http://www.grapevine.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html ?

I actually got the driver from a link off of linmodems.org (thanks to my
friend).

Thanks for the helpDAVE

Installing device drivers

2001-07-08 Thread David Meiser
I recently have decided to install Debian on my computer after a long
absence from the Linux world. However, I bought a cheap Winmodem and
after a long, involved search I have actually found a device driver for
Linux. After consulting with a couple of friends, none of us were able
to figure out, remember, or actually find (in the man pages) how to
install device drivers for hardware not supported in the kernel. I have
not actually installed Debian yet (because of the modem), I can install
the driver during the install.

Basically, my question comes down to this: if I put the driver on to a
3.5" diskette, does it need to be zipped (as I downloaded it) or unzipped?

Thank you...DAVE

libqt2.2

2001-02-27 Thread David Meiser
I've been trying to update my KDE to the newest stable version (apt-get
install task-kde), however, when I try to install, I get the error message
'Depends: libqt2 but it is not installable.' I tried to install libqt2,
which gave me the message that libqt2.2 is now being used. I then tried to
install libqt2.2, which said it was the newest version. Figuring maybe it
was all in my head, I went ahead and tried to install KDE again, giving me
the same error messages. Does anyone know why this is? What happened with
the qt libs?

I also have been trying to install stormpkg, which depends on libapt-pkg2.7.
It is also uninstallable because it 'has no installation candidate.'

Any help with either of these would be pretty dang helpful.
ThanksDAVE

suggestions? Thanks, DAVE

Re: ALSA & missing symbols

2001-02-04 Thread David Meiser
Recompile with 2.4.0 and the alsa source (use the kernel-package utility) and
be modest in what you select for the kernel (ex. no developmental code) and
the problem should be fixed. 2.2.18pre21 and 2.2.18 seem to be fu-jucked up.

The packages you'll need are kernel-source-2.4.0, alsa-source, alsaconf,
kernel-package. Read the README.debian files in their doc directories for
more info.

Dual Monitors

2001-02-03 Thread David Meiser
Hi, I've been trying to get my system to work with dual monitors, and I'm
having a little trouble.

Card 1 is a Voodoo3 3000 PCI with a generic monitor attached
Card 2 is an ATI Rage Pro GB (Mach 64) with an NEC MultiSync XV14 attached

The X Server reports that it is unable to find device when it is started.
However, the console itself recognizes the card. Any thoughts?

Thanks, DAVE
