Knoppix-Piggy and Debian installer

2002-11-10 Thread DEbian/Gnu/Linux User Tony
Last fresh installation (about the 4th) I made of Woody was in some old
pentium 2 - 350 mhz, with not much to show. To get things right from the
beginning I used this time a trick: First I had run piggy (the installer
from Progeny) and then knoppix. I copied the settings for X and the
modules used into a floppy, since the hardware detection was so
wonderfully done. Then, made a fresh installation of woody, recompiled
the kernel with all needed modules, copied directly from the floppy the
X config file, and now I have a completely painless Debian woody
machine. So, I am wondering, why don't we integrate Knoppix and Piggy's
capabilities into Debian, and make them part of the upcoming
distributions? Is Klauss Knopper a Debian developer? If he is not, may
be we should invite him to be one?
Just my 2 euros.
Thanks to all.

Re: Mutiple mail servers : REPOST

2001-10-18 Thread Debian GNU
Hello,

I feel my question was not clear. I didn't want to run
another mail server, because I have ONLY on DOMAIN.
So I feel virtual hosting is not a solution. My
problem is that my existing mail server is overcrowded
(like hard disk size limitaion) and I want to shift
some user to a new server which also delivers mails
for the SAME DOMAIN. This option can be easily set up
in other mail serves like Lotus Domino. What I wish to
know is how to implement this in Sendmail.

  Just set up vertual domain.

You can run as many sendmail(MTA) in theory using
 chroot and different port.
I see no point running another MTA.

I can assure you that learning exim (for MTA) is
 much easier. Setting
up MTA for multiple domains with multiple accounts
 are so easy even for
 newbie like me.

Main reason is space constraint in the existing one.

But with mutt I am not getting any error. I installed

I suspect this is some permission problem, but dont

Domain Controller

2001-08-02 Thread Debian GNU
Hello all,

I have a network running M$ Win NT as domain
controller and clients running M$ Win NT workstations.
I plan to switch over to a full Debian system in a
phased manner. Now I plan to change the server to
Potato. Is it possible to setup the potato as a domain
controller as NT so that I can get rid of the NT
server ? (I mean the clients should be able to log on
to the server, with user validation from server as in
the case of NT server)

Another machine in the network is running on potato
with samba etc and I am able to share files in that
machine to the win clients. I wish to change the
inital user validation also to be from the Potato.

Routing

2001-07-10 Thread Debian GNU
Hi all,

I have a network with the following configuration.

-
192.168.1.0/24 | |
192.168.1.1192.168.1.2
   Linux Gateway Router
   / |
   inet address
192.168.100.0/24
   |
   Router to internet

The machines in 192.168.1.0/24 network has put their
gateway as the linux machine and are accessing the
internet using proxy/masq. The default gateway of
Linux is set to the address of the router to internet.

How can I access the machines in 192.168.100.0/24
network ?

I tried using iptools but it shows defining routing
table using source address. I have to define route
according to destination address like packets to
192.168.100.0/24 should be forwarded to 192.168.1.2
and the rest to inet address of the router to internet
etc. IP Advanced router/Policy routing etc are
compiled into the kernel.

How is this possible ?

Thanks in advance.

2001-06-28 Thread Debian GNU
Hello All,

I have installed Potato on my machine i810. It has
Xfree86-3.3.6 and Kernel 2.2.19pre17. I have compiled
in the kernel module agpgart.o. But I am not able to
configure Xserver on this. could somebody help me out
or is there any howtos to do the installation. I
specifically require to use the package available with
the potato distribution.

Tnx for the response. I have visited intel's page,
where I can find only RPMS. No debs or sources are
available there. In fact I was using RH on this
machine and X was working fine. When I changed to
Debian, I am facing some startup problems. How can I
make use of the RPMS in intel's site ? Can I use
XFree86-3.3.6 instead of XFCom-i810 supplied in
Intel's site ? Please clarify.

Thanks

Deb

You need to go to intel.com's support section and
download an intel-specific X server. I recently set
up a machine with this partciular video chipset and
 I did
use agpgart.o, but I had to install the xserver as
well. Go to the intel 810's support page, and there
 are rpms and tar.gz files.

Routing Problem

2001-06-28 Thread Debian GNU
Hi all,

My machine running potato has rtl8139 network card. I
have configured it as eth0 and eth0:0 with two ip
addresses. I am able to ping to machines in two ip
ranges and working fine. Now I have added one more
alias as eth0:0 with ip address 192.168.1.10 in
/etc/network/interfaces. When I am pinging to the
machines in this network (and even to this ip) I am
getting operation not permitted error. What could be
the reason. I have tried adding route manually. My
kernel is 2.2.19pre17.

Thanks in advance

Deb

If it would have been a permission probelem, I would
not have been able to access the other networks. I did
as both root and ordinary user. But both gave the same
results.

AFAIK operation not permitted looks more like a
 permission problem that a
 route problem,
route problems often end up in network unreachable
did you try ping as root?

Dear Christoph,

Tnx friend. That was the problem. I was extensively
using ipchians to make this box a gateway with
firewalling. I slipped this. Thanks again.

Do you have some firewall rules installed which
 filter/reject ICMP?

DNS Mail

2001-01-02 Thread Debian GNU
Hi List,

I have configured a DNS server using bind in Debian
potato, Kernel 2.2.17. I have defined the hosts
www.xxx.yyy.com, ftp.xxx.yyy.com, mail.xxx.yyy.com
etc. I can get the web page hosted at www.xxx.yyy.com
by typing the URL in browser window. How can I get the
same by typing just xxx.yyy.com, like yahoo.com and
www.yahoo.com ?

How can I configure the linux machine to receive mail
addressed to [EMAIL PROTECTED] instead of
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ? The mail server configuration
is done using sendmail. I would like to get the
details of the DNS portion only.

Thanks in advance and Regards,

Mathew

Filemap limit and Squid

2000-12-28 Thread Debian GNU

Hello List,

I am using Debian Potato/Kernel 2.2.17. I have
configured my linux box as a dialup gateway to
internet. I am using Squid as a transparent proxy with
ipchains. At times, Squid hesitates to start on boot
up. On forcefully reloding squid with
/etc/init.d/squid start I am getting the error

FATAL: file_map_allocate: Exceeded filemap limit

in access.log. When I delete the gzipped log files and
restarting the squid, it is functioning properly. What
could be the reason ? What is filemap limit ?

Thanks and Regards,

Mathew

Re: Creative Live Value !!

2000-10-18 Thread Debian GNU
Hi All

I am also using Live value !!(emu10k1). I have been
using it with excellent quality in RH 6.1. When I
changed to Debian, it gives very poor quality of sound
with distortion etc. I tried both alsa and the driver
from Creative site.

Can you give some more details regarding the
applications related to sound that you have installed,
like mixer etc. I cannot increase the volume in xmms
because of distortion

Creative Live Value !!

2000-10-17 Thread Debian GNU
Hi All,

I am using Creative Live Value !! card and Debian
Potato. Earlier I was using RH 6.1, on which, it was
giving excellent performance, with drivers downloaded
from developer.soundblaster.com, even better
performace than in Windows 98. I installed the same
drivers in Deb, but unfortunately, the sound quality
is very inferior, with distortion and all. I tried
alsa drivers also, but didn't help. Is there any known
problem with Potato - Live value compatibility ? Is
there any known solution ?

Tnx in advance and Regards,

Deb

Re: make menuconfig error

I think the curses.h is missing. Try installing the
library ncurses. Be sure to give a make mrproper
before givin make menuconfig.
