No monitor (was Re: Debian vs. ATI Radeon x1650)

Hello,

thanks a lot for your help, I really appreciate it.

Yes, it's strange. I thing there's some message (an error probably) on
the screen just right before monitor's sleep mode, but it's too quick to
read it :/

I've tried xrandr -q
output: no devices

See attached file.

Thanks for the links. I was experimenting with those settings, but
resulting in monitor's sleep mode only so far...

Anyway...

I'm thinking about switching to gNewSense (everything is working fine
there), I'll try Debian again in a month or so.. with better luck maybe :)

I just wanted to finish some work on packages I was co-maintaining
before leaving Debian :/

1. "vesa"
Thanks for the explanation, I've tried "vesa" driver, screen just went
black (no sleep mode tho)... I had to hard restart after several minutes
of waiting... no Xorg log was generated (?).

I made fresh install yesterday, Debian Squeeze/main (the latest weekly
build).

2. "radeonhd"
I'm getting EE when trying to start X using "radeonhd" driver (it's
original config generated by Xorg -configure)... see full log in
attachment. No hard restart needed in this case, after seeing EE message
I got working console again...

3. "radeon"
I've tried "radeon" driver as well... monitor went to sleep mode, I had
to hard restart, no Xorg log was generated (?).

Note: gNewSense and Ubuntu are working fine :(

Quick recap of my problem:

Linux 2.6.30.6-dsa-ia32 i686 Debian
X.Org X Server 1.6.3.901 (1.6.4 RC 1)

my ATI Radeon x1650 have 2x DVI-I (Dual link),
my LCD monitor LG L1752S got an "old" 15-pin D-SUB VGA connector
so I have to use convertor...

I'm getting following error when trying to start X:

"...
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found
..."

I can send full Xorg.0.log if needed...

I was checking wiki.x.org as well:

http://www.x.org/wiki/FAQErrorMessages#head-83b2f9b8c18db15e641ed9e0be8f9a8364001e5b

but I wasn't able to solve this problem anyway.

Any ideas please?

Thanks a lot.

It think should be created after you try to run X, but I have never deleted
my X log before... Try running X, and if that doesn't create it, use touch
to create it and set it to user and group "root" with "rw-rw" permissions.

it looks like X are really not able to recreate log, I had to recreate
it manually.

See attached file...

I'm not sure, but it looks like it's something wrong with my monitor...
my graphics card has 2x DVI-I output, but my LCD monitor got just that
older VGA connector, so I'm using a convertor...

I think my X are running fine, I'm just not able to see that,
because my monitor keeps going to sleep mode everytime =)

Unfortunately I got no other monitor here to try it...

Funny thing is Ubuntu managed to recognize that monitor somehow >.<

Any ideas please?

I'd like to use free drivers only, my card should be supported (RV535).

This is my /etc/X11/xorg.conf from working Ubuntu (but it doesn't work
in Debian):

Section "Device"
   Identifier"Configured Video Device"
   Driver"radeon"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
   Identifier"Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
   Identifier"Default Screen"
   Monitor"Configured Monitor"
   Device"Configured Video Device"

I've tried generated (Xorg -configure) config as well (it's quite long,
can post if needed),

still the same problem...

I've tried proprietary driver as well, the same problem... anyway, free
driver is my primary goal...

Ubuntu 2.6.27-14-generic (the only OS I managed to run so far) is
running 100% fine
(including compiz 3D effects) using free driver
xserver-xorg-driver-radeon 1:6.12.1-0ubuntu2

Strange thing is that when booting Ubuntu 2.6.28-15-generic system hangs
(monitor turns into sleep mode)...

Debian vs. ATI Radeon x1650

2009-09-24 Thread Dominik Smatana

Hello,

some time ago my old machine "went boom" and now I'm desperately trying
to install Debian on new one...

Everytime I'm trying to start x-server monitor just turns to sleep mode
and keyboard LEDs keep blinking... I think this problem is related to my
graphic card - ATI Technologies Inc RV535 [Radeon X1650 Series] rev 158.

Debian Lenny = fail
Debian Squeeze kernel 2.2.26-1-686 = fail
Debian Squeeze kernel 2.6.26-2-686 = fail
Ubuntu 9.04 kernel 2.6.27-14-generic = OK (strange)
Ubuntu 9.04 kernel 2.6.27-15-generic = fail

Any ideas please?

Thanks
