how to stop exim running the queue automatically

2004-03-05 Thread Dr. Sharukh K. R. Pavri.
Hi,

I am using debian testing/unstable with exim 3.x. I have started using
debian just a few days ago, I formerly used RedHat.Now I have configiured
it to queue outbound mails and send them thru my smarthost. My webhost
supports pop-before-smtp hence I need to check my mail before I can send.

I have this in exim.conf

queue_remote_domains = ! localhost

yet when exim starts up it starts with :

/usr/lib/exim/exim3 -bd -q30m

it tries to send my queued mails immediately on startup (which results in
failed delivery) and every 30 mins. This means that many a times the queue
runs at a time when the smarthost will not accept mesages for delivery.

What can I do such that the queued messages are *only* set when I manually
run the queue ? To stop exim starting up with -q30m option, I edited
/etc/init.d/exim and changed the incantation from

--
echo -n "Starting MTA: "
start-stop-daemon --start --pidfile /var/run/exim/exim.pid \
--exec $DAEMON -- -bd -q30m
  echo "exim."
--

to

-
echo -n "Starting MTA: "
start-stop-daemon --start --pidfile /var/run/exim/exim.pid \
--exec $DAEMON -- -bd
  echo "exim."
-

This is what I have in /etc/inetd.conf (untouched by me)

#:MAIL: Mail, news and uucp services.
#smtp stream tcp nowait mail/usr/sbin/exim exim -bs

--

now, this is what I get :(

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ps ax | grep exim
 234 ?S 0:00 /usr/lib/exim/exim3 -bd
1279 pts/3S 0:00 grep exim
---
debian:/etc/init.d# /etc/init.d/exim restart
Restarting MTA: No /usr/lib/exim/exim3 found running; none killed.
exim.

---

debian:/etc/init.d# ps ax | grep exim
 234 ?S 0:00 /usr/lib/exim/exim3 -bd
1321 ?S 0:00 /usr/lib/exim/exim3 -bd
1326 pts/0S 0:00 grep exim
---

restart is not killing the original exim but is starting up another
instance.

obviously some mistake on my part. What do I do now ?

also, this has not solved my problem of exim trying to run the queue
automatically. I usually send out the mail with exim -q.

Presently what I do is after composing the mail in mutt, I postpone the
mesage and only send it once I have checked my mail.

I have googled, looked up newbiedoc. The exim faq does not seem to have
what I want or I just cannot spot it.

thanks,

Sharukh.

loading ide-scsi at bootup

2003-12-04 Thread Dr. Sharukh K. R. Pavri.
I am using debian testing/unstable with kde. I have a CDRW/DVD combo on
hdd. I have added the line "append hdd=ide-scsi" in lilo.conf. The
ide-scsi module is not beingloaded at boot up. How do I go about setting
it so that it is loaded at startup.

I am a recent migrant from RedHat and this was always automatically setup
under rh.

I am on debian testing/unstable. I have built this up from a base install

startup, I get the xdm screen. How do I change this to the kde login
screen.

kde 3 on testing/unstable -- newbie query

2003-11-30 Thread Dr. Sharukh K. R. Pavri.
I am a newbie to debian (former RH user.) I have a set of woody CDs. I
installed a base system, upgrade to testing using the go-woody script.

I then installed X with apt-get install x-window-system. I now have a
working X install with twm.

I now want to install kde 3.1.4 (it's present in knoppix). I added the
line

deb http://download.kde.org/stable/3.1.4/Debian stable main

to /etc/apt/sources.list and ran apt-get update. Unfortunately when I run
apt-get install kde I get the following errors:

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

What am I doing wrong ? I really would like to start working with kde on
my debian install.

any pointers would be welcome.

Sharukh.

ps: speaking of knoppix, the line for kde in sources.list is commented
out.

Newbie installation query

2003-11-26 Thread Dr. Sharukh K. R. Pavri.
I am a former RedHat user and now want to try out Debian. I have dabbled in
debian before but have always messed up, usually in the installation
(using dselect). Plus, I only got kde 2.2 even after I updated the woody
install. This time I decided I would rough it out :).

After reading up on the net, I did just a base install of woody, then ran
the go-woody script so that I would be able to download and use more
recent software (like kde 3.1.4 as in knoppix.).

I now have a base install of testing (I think). I have cable internet (but
a limited download allowance) and would like to have a proper debian
system with X window system and kde. What is the way to go ? should I
fire up tasksel and let the system download the software ? Or should I go
with apt-get'ing the individual softwares and let apt manage the
dependencies ?

Sharukh.

neighbor table overflow

2002-06-17 Thread Dr. Sharukh K. R. Pavri.
I have installed woody on my machine, booting w/ RH 7.1. Right from the
installation stages, I keep getting this message

neighbor table overflow

either singly or in sets of 4 - 6 instances of the message. I googled for
this and it seems to be an error in finding other machines on the subnet
(if I understand it correctly). But I have a standalone machine,
connecting to the net via a 56k modem. No ethernet card here.

What does this error mean ? How do I rectify it ?

mouse not working

2002-06-16 Thread Dr. Sharukh K. R. Pavri.
Hi,

I am an ex windose user on RedHat at the moment. I installed woody as
triple boot on a p120 48m ram 8g hdd. I went with the defaults during the
install but I am unable to get gpm working. What I mean is that though ps
shows gpm running, the cursor does not work. It does work under RH. I
mostly work in the console.

I ran gpmconfig and tried all sorts of combinations with zilch results. It
is an old three button mouse of Micromate brand. I had the same problem
some months ago when I had installed an older version of debian and had
then removed debian after some time. This time I intend to stick with it
and get my mouse working.

what do I need to do to get my mouse working in the console ?

thanks,

Sharukh
