Thanks for the replys guys but i managed to sort this. I used a rescue/install cd from here http://people.debian.org/~jgoerzen/dfs/html/ with a most similar kernel, i mounted proc and sys on my mounted drive then chrooted in and created a new initrd image, rebooted and it was fine. thanks again Edd Parris .'' ` . 2.6.14-2-386, missing thermal.ko and initrd
Hi everyone and happy new year :) Sometime over the weekend I had a power blip that shut ny debian sarge box down. When i booted it this morning i found this lovely message: Begin: Running /scripts/init-premount ... FATAL: Error inserting fan (/lib/modules/2.6.14-2-386/kernel/drivers/acpi/fan.ko): No such device FATAL: Error inserting thermal (/lib/modules/2.6.14-2-386/kernel/drivers/acpi/thermal.ko): No such device it then leaves me with a simple busy box shell with only what is in the initrd. Now, this machine was up for probly 3-4 months or so before it went down, I have not updated in a while as i dont ever login and use it that often but it has a few cron scripts and nfs shares that are pretty important and i really need to get them back. I think the problem is that when i did last update it, it updated the kernel and told me to reboot asap... ...which i probly just forgot about so when it has come back up it has not had an updated ram disk with these new drivers and cant boot. silly of me i know but its happened and i really need to get this back up asap. Does anyone have a clue of how i can a) boot off a cd and then maybe chroot and create a new ramdisk (not sure this is the best way but the only thing ive thought would work so far) or b) any other ideas are welcome! If anyone has a clue how to save this i would be very very grateful thanks alot Edd Parris .'' ` . tg3 driver and kernel 2.6.8
Hallo all I have an IBM xseries260 that i have managed to get debian up and running on. It has been up now for about 2 weeks but not really doing anything for the last week as i have been away on holiday. When i had a look at it today the networking had gone down. The server uses the infamous broadcom 5704 chipset that uses the tg3 driver, i have experienced no promlems prior to this incident but am now getting errors when i modprobe the driver: Firmware "tg3/tso-1.4.0" not loaded; continuing without TSO I gather that in kernel 2.6.11 the firmware for this driver has been removed due to liscnece issues but the driver i was using in my 2.6.8 kernel has seemed fine until now. Does anyone know how i can get this back up and running (the driver from the broadcom site does not compile). thanks Eddy Parris Send instant messages to your online friends http://uk.messenger.yahoo.com

By booting a different kernel I'm able to mount the partitions so I can copy some for files. Funny thing is, that I used a different kernel then the one installed. You're right about the raid system. I can boot from a Debian-install CD and mount the disks. I can copy files to and from the disks, eg. Kernel-image-.deb. But I don't know how I can install a kernel image. Do you perhaps know how I can reinstall a kernel image? Eddy
empty /boot directory
Hi all, This morning I rebooted my Debian-server. After a while Grub responded during te boot-process with: Error 15 file not found. To my surprise the whole boot directory appears to be empty, except for the /boot/grub directory. The server is a HP Proliant 360 with a smartarray controller. What I probably need to do is to reinstall a kernel image. I can boot with a Debian-installer CD, but I don’t know how to manually mount what was /dev/cciss/c0d0p1. After running the hardware detection I do have a /dev/cciss/disc0/par1 First I need access to a partition for making a copy of a file. Then I like to install a kernel image so I can start the server without reinstalling everything. Can anyone help me how to do this?
Wmaker compiled without drag n drop
Hi, I dist-upgraded Sarge and replaced version 0.80.2-0.4 of wmaker with 0.91.0-2. Now it is no longer possible to launch applications by dropping files from a file explorer (e.g. xfe) onto dock icons. Apparently it is because wmaker was compiled without drag n drop support. Does anyone know if that choice was deliberate and why ? Should a bug report (whishlist) be sent or is it to trivial ? -- Eddy "La notion de passoire est indépendante de la notion de trou." Lines missing from a printed ps file
Hello, I need some help with the following problem. I've got this ps file http://users.belgacom.net/ef/essai10.ps (43k) that I can't print properly on my system Debian Sarge with cups 1.1.20final+rc1-10 HP Deskjet 6122 with hpijs file sent directly to cups using the lp command or via xpp What happens is that horizontal lines in the second equation are not printed, some numbers are only partly printed. Well I tried printing this same file on the same machine using Knoppix 3.3 and all went perfectly well. I think the same softwares were used and I suppose the only differences were their versions and / or their configurations. Therefore, I see two possibilities : - a bug somewhere (unlikely I think, the problem has existed for months now and I've been upgrading Debian several times since; yet I know other people using Sarge with a HP Deskjet who have the same problem); - I need to change the configuration. Playing with the printer config in xpp doesn't change anything. I don't know how to tweak Cups or Foomatic or ... I set LogLevel to debug but I don't know what to do next. Here's part of the log under Debian http://users.belgacom.net/ef/debian-error_log-stripped (11k) and the one from Knoppix http://users.belgacom.net/ef/knoppix-error_log-stripped (14k). I removed the dates from the beginning of lines to make a diff comparision easier and also replaced "[Job 566]" by "[Job #]" for the same reason. If I can see for myself the differences, I don't know enough to find out which ones are significant and what to do next. Could anyone share their knowledge and have a look at those logs and suggest what to do. Thanks a lot. -- Eddy "La notion de passoire est indépendante de la notion de trou." Re: why debian
Well it very depends, if you want a very 'windows' like operating system, probably you want a linux like xandros. but if you want a linux to play with, debian is a good choice. My first attempt on linux was few years back with red hat, suse, and just this year, I've beginning to play debian, and I really like it just because of its package management. I think the best distro's feature is hidden and found only when you try to maintain or administer the OS, not when you are actually using the application. sorry if I'm wrong :) On Fri, 12 Nov 2004 00:11:27 -0800 (PST), ken keanon <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Hi, > > There are so many distros out there its confusing. Re: Ext3 file system crash
Thank you very much for the help guys! :) I've installed smartmontools, memtest86+. First thing I tried was memtest86+, and it reported failure/errors. I am using 2 memory chips, and luckily the fault only on the first chip, so now I can still run linux safely with 512MB. At the moment, I'm still running suggested dd to check for hard drive IO fault. I think the hard disk is pretty safe.. at least until I see the command finish without error in the log. Thanks again, now I know what to use for checking memory in the future. memtest86+ even allow me to make a bootable disk to check memory. cool! Ext3 file system crash
Hi all, Like the earlier post from other user, I also experienced this. I am asking for help here or ideas. I installed knoppix 3.4 to harddisk (debian based option), kernel 2.4.26, and using ext3 for all my file system. my etc/fstab: # filesystem mountpoint type options dump pass /dev/hda7 / ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1 /dev/hda9 /var ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1 /dev/hda10 /tmp ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1 /dev/hda11 /home ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1 proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/fd0 /floppy autofs defaults,user,noauto,showexec,umask=022 0 0 usbdevfs /proc/bus/usb usbdevfs defaults 0 0 sysfs /sys sysfs defaults 0 0 one day, suddenly, my / file system crash after reboot. and I have to answer lots of yes.. to fix the error. after that, I think some of system files were deleted and I can get into the system anymore.. it just hangs. after that, I've to reinstall knoppix, upgrading to sarge again, etc. After some reading, I thought to set my file system check interval to be every few days, every 3 mounts or 1 day. But, everytime, the root (/) file system was checked, at 90%, there are some errors. some time it was fixed with still some error, sometime it was clean. Until today, the file root (/) system is never really clean after reboot. I don't know what is wrong with my PC, some time, the system reported ext3fs error on console.. I can't remember the message. any help would be really appreciated. thanks. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

kernel-image-2.6.8-1-686 unable to mount root
Hi everyone, I'm running debian, sarge. I installed the OS from Knoppix 3.4. I want to use kernel 2.6.8, but I've got a problem on booting kernel-image-2.6.8-1-686. I got this: Kernal panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(3,7) Currently I'm using kernel 2.4.26 default from Knoppix. I also got similar error when trying kernel-image-2.4.26.-1-686. I really don't know how to get it working. I've tried googling the web and searching all debian's list archive, and found many pages related to that specific error, but the solutions suggested were to compile the kernel with file system driver compiled and something about MSDOS partition support built into the kernel not as module. But I don't want to compile the kernel. What I don't understand is, why the package I downloaded from debian sarge, causes that error? Is it really because of the file system driver not compiled into the kernel? I thought that packages from sarge should be common enough so that user can just download them and use it. Also, the kernel-image downloaded from debian is unable to use the vesafb (I guess). my vga option in lilo.conf is vga=791, which is working under knoppix default. BTW, my lilo.conf is like: image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.26 label="Linux" initrd=/boot/initrd.img-2.4.26 append="ramdisk_size=50 lang=de apm=power-off hda=scsi hdb=scsi hdc=scsi hdd=scsi hde=scsi hdf=scsi hdg=scsi hdh=scsi nomce" read-only image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.26-1-686 label="Linux-686" vga=extended initrd=/boot/initrd.img-2.4.26-1-686 append="ramdisk_size=50 lang=de apm=power-off hda=scsi hdb=scsi hdc=scsi hdd=scsi hde=scsi hdf=scsi hdg=scsi hdh=scsi nomce" read-only image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.8-1-686 label="Linux-2.6" vga=extended initrd=/boot/initrd.img-2.6.8-1-686 append="ramdisk_size=50 lang=en apm=power-off hda=scsi nomce" read-only I don't have a clue to why all hdx is equal to scsi. and what apm=power-off means and nomce? You can create a symlink to your program in /etc/init.d/ then insert it in the boot or reboot sequence by doing something like update-rc.d your_symlink start 99 2 . Adjust the number 99 according to the place you want your program to be in the boot sequence and the number 2 can be replaced by whatever runlevel you want (6 is actually reboot but I guess that would mean your program would start when you enter the reboot sequence and would be terminated when your system has actually been rebooted to another run level). Anyway, don't do that before you really understand enough about run levels and the init.d boot sequence. Reading man update-rc.d and man init is a must. Note that your program would be run with uid root. If you want to change that, use sudo. man sudo Now if your program needs X, I can't see why you'd want to launch it at reboot. In that case you should start it with your X session (I'll leave this to someone else) or with your desktop manager. The way to do that depends on the desktop manager used (placing a symlink in ~/.kde/Autostart/ for KDE, editing ~/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker/autostart for Window Maker, ...) -- Eddy "La notion de passoire est indépendante de la notion de trou." Re: newbie trying to install usb modem
Stephen Puttick a écrit le 28/09/04 15:30 : I have just installed sarge using CDs (jigdo download of 1st 3) on my old win98 PC. I have 2 hard disks so Debian is on a separate disk - so no real problems if I need to start again. I have an Alcatel speedtouch 330 USB (broadband/ADSL) modem, which works on both the win98 PC and my win xp laptop. I'm not quite ready to [...] I also have a speedtouch usb. I don't think it is the same as yours : mine is the green/blue manta. I don't know much about the differences between your modem and mine so keep in mind that I cannot certify that my reply is relevant to you. 2) I found the following site which talks about recompiling the kernel http://linux-usb.sourceforge.net/SpeedTouch/docs/sargehowto.html http://linux-usb.sourceforge.net/SpeedTouch/download/index.html this all sounded a bit more involved than i was planning as a newbie installation. I have sarge installed with the 2.4 kernel. (jigdo template 19 Sept 2004) 3)Am I right in thinking that a newer kernel might support the speedtouch. I think the 2.6 kernel uses a module to support the speedtouch. I'm using sarge with kernel 2.6.7 and I need a "modprobe speedtch" to get my modem to work. Just 2 notes : 1/ I didn't need to compile my own kernel to achieve that, I just used the one provided by sarge and booted from cd1 typing linux26. (My cd was created in late July using jigdo, I don't know if a newer one would still install kernel 2.6.7 or a newer one.) 2/ I had once installed woody with a 2.4 kernel and my modem was working very well with the speedtouch package without any kernel module. I suppose you could do it with sarge too therefore I don't think a newer kernel is a necessity. 4) I haven't yet got an ethernet card - I thought I'd wait until I could get a net connection up and running. Am I wrong? should I go and get one now? Frankly I regret ever buying my usb modem. Oh it works quite well... once it is installed. The advantage of a good ethernet modem is that it is recognised from the beginning of the install process and doesn't need any proprietary (micro)code to work. You just download a minimal boot cd and install from it, downloading packages as you need them. It can't be done so easily with the speedtouch usb. Since I didn't want to download several debian cd's, I created the first one with jigdo and booted from it. I did a minimal install then dpkg'ed the speedtouch package I had previously downloaded, configured my modem and connection and finally modified my sources list and restarted the installation with an apt-get update (I think). Not that intuitive. Another problem : just because you find out how to get your modem working now doesn't mean it'll work in the future as I found out when I tried to install with the 2.6 kernel using the recipes I had previously gathered from my 2.4 experiences. So if like me you want to punish yourself for ever buying that material, keep using it. If you plan to buy an ethernet card anyway, don't waste your time and buy a new modem right now. So any advice on how to get this modem working would be greatly appreciated - or should I abandon it for another model (it was provided with the ADSL). If you want, I can post the notes I took when I installed woody with a 2.4 kernel or sarge with a 2.6. Just ask in reply to this message and give me a little time to find and translate them. Keep in mind that as a relative newbie, I can tell you what I did but I might not be able to help further if it doesn't work for you :( -- Eddy "La notion de passoire est indépendante de la notion de trou." If he posts in the beginner's list just because he is a beginner, he might never get a reply to a difficult question or problem because the experts do not read that list. you should ask the question but perhaps a lot of debian users would appreciate it. It is a forum where merely by reading the threads that I'm interested in, I learn so much. Moreover, those who do not want to receive all the messages in their mail box can still browse the list as a usenet newsgroup and just download the messages they want. I hate mailing lists (look at those "unsubscribe" messages polluting the list or those automatic responses telling you the recipient is on hollyday) but I read this one on linux.debian.user from my ISP's news server (it also exists, maybe with a different name, on news.gmane.org). To break it into three lists will tend to fragment the community and I suspect beginners or relative novices wouldn't recveive the same quality of advice and guidance and debian adoption would suffer as a result. I must also add that the newsgroups I learned the most from were the ones varied enough to both answer my simple questions and address higher subjects that make me want to search for more. uname problem??
Hallo I am having terrible problems with my system, I think coreutils was upgraded in my last apt-get update/upgrade and now uname does not seem to function like it should, it behave rather like fsck... thus rendering many start up scripts useless and making my computer not boot properly. uname should print out system information, but the version i have seems to wants to be fsck, here is the out put from uname run without any switches shell:~#uname Usage: uname [-panyrcdfvstDFSV] [-b superblock] [-B blocksize] [-I indoe_buffer_blocks] [-P process_inode_size] [-l|-L bad_blocks_file] p-C fd] [-j ext-journal] [-E extended-options] device Emergency help: -p automatic repair -n make no changes to the filesystem -y assume 'yes' to all questions -c check for bad blocks and add the to the badblock list -f force checking even if filesystem is marked clean -v be verbose -b superblock use alternative superblock -B blocksize force blocksize when looking for superblock -j external-journal set location of the external journal -l bad_blocks_file add to badblocks list -L bad_blocks_file set badblocks list yes, very suspiciously like the output of fsck --help (which im not going to put here as i just had to type the above by hand copying from my other monitor :P). I really am at a loose end, i dont know why or how this happened, as i say i rebooted about 12hours after having apt-get updated/upgraded and found that my system was unable to start properly because uname is used in so many start up scripts... all that it was printing to the screen during boot was the usage of the supposed uname (ie wats above). Does anyone know wat has happened here? or can anyone point me in the direction of wat i should do to recover uname etc... i think ihave carried out the siplest checks by trying to upgrade/update again, checking that uname is not a funny symlink and stuff... Rah, this really has me stumped! any help would be much appreciated thanks edward parris = .'' ` . I installed alsa and when I booted the next day (this desktop is shutdown at night), I couldn't start the X server anymore. What happened I can't figure out but the psmouse module wasn't loaded. Try modprobe psmouse and restart X and if it works, consider adding "psmouse" to /etc/modules. > InputDevice"Configured Mouse" >InputDevice"Generic Mouse" By the way, I see that you have two InputDevices for probably only one mouse. I wonder why that is. In fact I had just the same and it didn't bother me too much until I realised that it was responsible for wheel actions being applied twice (when I rolled the whell to get to the next desktop in wmaker, I ended up on the second next). I commented out the Generic Mouse line in my XF86Config-4 and things are working well. -- Eddy (enlever shadoko de l'adresse) "En essayant continuellement, on finit par réussir Donc : plus ça rate, plus on a de chance que ça marche" Les Shadoks -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". I didn't find what to do with your first suggestion but the second one (using smtp to localhost) works perfectly. I never thought about it because I thought that using sendmail was equivalent to an smtp to localhost. Obviously it is not. Just a little sidenote for non English Kmail users : Kmail complained when contacting smtp localhost that the server didn't accept 8 bit messages and wanted me to use Quoted Printable instead (I hate QP cause I want my messages to be readable by a basic text editor). Yet telneting to localhost showed that exim4 responds well to my ehlo command (of course it does !). I finally found a work around here : http://lists.debian.org/debian-qt-kde/2004/04/msg00357.html and added "accept_8bitmime = true" to my /etc/exim4/exim4.conf.template -- Eddy (remove shadoko from address) "En essayant continuellement, on finit par réussir Donc : plus ça rate, plus on a de chance que ça marche" Les Shadoks -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Prinitng aborts
Hi, Using Sarge with Cups (and a HP Deskjet 6122 but I think this is irrelevant), I used to be able to print alright. (Well I never detected any problem but the installation is recent and I haven't had the need to print much at the beginning.) Now, it doesn't work anymore : the first few lines are printed then printing aborts and the page is ejected as if printing was done. The number of lines printed varies from one job to another and sometimes everything gets printed normally. I wasn't able to detect any pattern as to when the problem arises. I don't think I did anything special to break the system (apart from regular apt-get upgrade). The applications I print from are usually OpenOffice or Xpdf (the latter using either lpr or xpp). Sorry not to be more specific but I just haven't got a clue. Any suggestion (where to look for error messages, what to try to get a better diagnostic), any help (what to reconfigure or reinstall) or any experience is warmly welcomed. My holidays are over and I need to regain full printing ability really quickly so this will be a major problem soon. Thanks. -- Eddy (remove shadoko from address) "En essayant continuellement, on finit par réussir Donc : plus ça rate, plus on a de chance que ça marche" Les Shadoks -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Exim4 return-path header
Hi, I use Exim4 with Sarge and have a little configuration problem regarding mail headers. What should I do in order to have "Return-path" and "Sender" headers added by Exim to be exactly the same as the "From" header created by my mail client ? If my question isn't clear enough, please read on for more explanations. I have several email addresses and I can choose the one to use from my mail client (usually kmail) ; that address is written in the "From" header. But then Exim add "Return-path" and "Sender" headers containing [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thus my mail headers are like these : From : [EMAIL PROTECTED] Return-path : [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sender : [EMAIL PROTECTED] but what I want is From : [EMAIL PROTECTED] Return-path : [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sender : [EMAIL PROTECTED] I know I can add eddy : [EMAIL PROTECTED] in the /etc/email-addresses but then when I'll chose (from within my mail client) to use [EMAIL PROTECTED] the headers will be From : [EMAIL PROTECTED] Return-path : [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sender : [EMAIL PROTECTED] while in that case I'd rather have From : [EMAIL PROTECTED] Return-path : [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sender : [EMAIL PROTECTED] Writing eddy: use_whatever_is_in_the_from_path in /etc/email-addresses won't work (would it?) but that's basicly what I'd like to achieve. Please don't tell me to RTFM, I've done that and am lost. I found out that adding myself to the trusted users suppress the "Sender" header entirely but the 'bad' "Return-path" persists. I've tried to use "return_path_add = false" or "return_path_remove = true" in the exim config files but it didn't work. (Anyway, I suppose I do need a return-path, don't I ? ) Thanks for any help. -- Eddy (remove shadoko from the address) "En essayant continuellement, on finit par réussir Donc : plus ça rate, plus on a de chance que ça marche" Les Shadoks -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Fonts in pdf files suddenly very ugly
Hello, I'm new to Debian and to this list (not subscribed yet, reading from usenet). I have a problem with some pdf files the fonts of which have suddenly become very ugly. Files that displayed very well a few days ago now display and print with a font too large and letters colliding. To get a more precise idea, you can go to http://users.belgacom.net/ef/pdf.html (I admit it's not that dramatic but when my colleagues will receive those prints they won't be favourably impressed by Linux or Debian.) I usually view and print with xpdf but other programs don't give better results. Of course, xpdf doesn't give any error message to base my search on. That's why I didn't find anything on google and why I desperately need help : I haven't got a clue what to do ! I don't know what happened to cause this behaviour. I certainly didn't change anything willingly. Could an apt-get ugrade be the cause of this ? One last thing : it doesn't happen with every pdf file. I supose it depends on the fonts used. For example, the file shown on the web page mentioned before includes /Type /Font /Subtype /Type1 /Encoding 7 0 R /BaseFont /Courier >> endobj Thanks for any help. -- Eddy (enlever shadoko de l'adresse) "En essayant continuellement, on finit par réussir Donc : plus ça rate, plus on a de chance que ça marche" Les Shadoks -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
