Re: Dual Boot With Win XP - Debian First?
It is certainly possible to proceed that way. There is one problem: as soon as you install Windows XP your MBR will be changed, so it seems as though your Debian is missing. Of course, it you have installed Debian on a seperate disk it is still there, only not bootable. There are several solutions! If your computer has a floppy disk you can prepare a floppy with GRUB on it to start your Debian. Or you can use a CD prepared to start Debian. Or you can use e.g. a Knoppix CD to boot your computer and the re-install GRUB. It is important to choose a method that works in your situation and testing it before installing XP. -- Eeltje de Vries -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to with a subject of unsubscribe. problem: nvidia module not loading after updating Xorg (solved)
The link is: http://www.debianhelp.org/node/8092 To repeat the story written there: I send a bug report (see: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=428731) and within minutes I got a work around! What one has to do (as 'root') is: # cd /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers # gcc -shared -o nvidia_drv.so nvidia_drv.o Then you can install 'nvidia' in xorg.conf and restart X. Re: GRUB problem?
Keith Willis schreef: Hi, Here's a weird one... I've noticed that as soon as the GRUB boot-loader runs, I lose my DVD-RW drive. It functions normally if I jump into the BIOS setup at boot time, then ceases to respond the moment GRUB runs, so that even if I boot into WinXP, the drive does not show up. Restoring the MBR makes the problem go away, so it is definitely not a drive problem. I can't see anything specifically about this at the GNU GRUB home page. Anyone have any ideas, please? Thx, klw -- http://www.bytebrothers.co.uk (not currently working) PGP key ID 0xEB7180EC I had a problem with GRUB last week, it seemed that 'timeout' didn't work. I also noted that I had the same problem with LILO and even when starting a live-cd. When I unplugged the keyboard I had no problem! As you can imagine the problem disappeared when I bought a new keyboard. The strange fact was that the only way in which I found the problem was when booting. After the boot process the keyboard worked fine. Maybe your problem is somehow similar? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact
Digikam
I am using 'testing', not 'sid'. But I have encountered similar problems. In my case it was just a version of the kernel that made that I couldn't download with digiKam. Audacity
If your soundcard works (I suppose it does...) then you should check a few things: 1) Does /dev/dsp exist? Sometimes you have to load extra modules (or so) in Alsa. 2) Are you using KDE or Gnome? Then it could be that a sound server like aRts or eSound is running. In such a case Audacity can not use /dev/dsp. You should stop all sound servers before using Audacity. It can also help to start Audacity in a console and see if you can see error messages that clarify what is going on. -- Eeltje de Vries -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: how many CDs for v3.1 r3?
anonymous schreef: I was planning to download and test install Debian for the first time. However, when I browsed the website below: http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/3.1_r3/i386/iso-cd/ for a download, I found out that I would need to download 18 CDs: 15 regular and 3 for the update. I would like to know whether all these CDs have binary files or are these also include CDs with sources and documentation. If so, which ones of them? How much would it need for a complete install on a P-IV 2.5GHz with 256 MB RAM? And how much for the disk space? I tried to look up the answers in the online manual, but was unable to find them. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, A. It is much better (and simpler) to do a net install. You download just a small CD to begin with the installation and then choose what you want to install. See http://www.debian.org/CD/netinst/ As soon as the system is working you can add packages as you need them. -- Eeltje -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to with a subject of unsubscribe. I use Ubuntu breezy and Debian Sarge (plus a little help from backports.org) for most things, I find I like both equally. Best, -Tim I agree with Tim that first of all you should make up your mind about the intended use of your system. I have experience with SUSE when OpenSUSE did not yet exist. I had to buy a new version every year or so. Moreover it turned out to be very difficult to install newer software, because the libraries were becoming too old. Then I decided to install Debian. I chose the 'testing' distribution. Now I have it two years running and I am very satisfied. 'Testing' is continuously updated, so you have very recent software. Moreover, the updating is a continuous process, so you never have to reinstall your system. Moreover, in 'testing' you have very many packages, which can be installed with 'synaptic', a graphical front end to 'apt'. During the last two years I have experience very few serious problems with 'testing'. I use Debian 'testing' as a desktop system for my own personal use. Of course, if you are using your system in a production environment you should choose 'stable' in stead of 'testing'. Installing Debian is very easy: just download a CD for a net install and then install your system from the net. -- Eeltje -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to with a subject of unsubscribe.
