In 3D applications you are stuck with 16 bit color, this is a hardware limitation and there is no way around it.

In addition to the X module and the kernel modules you need ALL of the libraries and headers in the 'Resources' section of the DRI homepage. I've written a small guide for DRI and the Voodoo3 which you can read at home.earthlink.net/~earmando/v3guide.html. Let me know if the guide helps you any. Good luck!

Re: help! i'm drowning!
Jeff: You seem to have a PCMCIA problem. After I wrote a follow up 10 minutes ago I searched where I store my old computer stuff and found a Megahertz XJ1144. I tested it on an old notebook running Linux 2.2.9 and the PCMCIA card services and modules version 3.0.9 and did not have a problem at all. This modem is not a Win modem and works perfect under Linux. You need to run pon before using APT if you are using a mirror in the Internet. If you have a local mirror (which I don't think is your case) the you need to be connected to your ISP before running APT. Hope this helps. peloy.- jeff k <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > I've got my base installed and i am still trying to > get everything else on with apt. > > My problem is that I still can't tell what's up with > my modem-card (Megahertz XJ1144). > I do know that it is not a winmodem, but it doesn't show up > on any of the lists of "modems working under Linux" either. > > When I boot it does show up as /dev/ttyS0 and when I use > stty it show up too, baud and all. > > when I pon my plog reads: > pppd 2.3.5 started by root, uid0 > tchettatr: Input/Output error (5) > or also: > send (ATZ^M) > expect (OK) > It just doesn't seem to be dialing at all. > > Any ideas? > jk > > p.s. stupid question: i have to pon before i go to the menu > and run apt, right?? > > > __ > Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com > > > -- > Unsubscribe? mail -s unsubscribe [EMAIL PROTECTED] < /dev/null >

No need to do that. The smbfsx package has been compiled with 2.2.x kernel headers and everything is ready to go with the 2.2.x kernels. Best mail transport agent for a desktop PC
Hi, I am just wondering what's the best mail transport agent for a PC that will not be receiving e-mail from the outside world and will be transferring all e-mail to a mail hub. A standard installationg of Debian uses cron, which suggests a mail transport agent. In my servers I use sendmail but this looks overkill (in terms of use of valuable resources like memory) for a simple workstation. Can someone tell me what's in use out there (exim, smail, etc.)? peloy.-

If you use a 2.0.x kernel or a 2.1.x (x < 70), you need the smbfs package (version 2.0.2, IIRC). If you use a 2.1.x (x >= 70) or later, you need the smbfsx package. smbmount from package smbfs and smbmount-2.1.x from package smbfsx have different syntax. Check the man pages. peloy.-

My experiences with a scanner
Hello! Just wanted to share with you my recently lived experiences with a scanner. This week I bought an UMAX Astra 1220S scanner. I had been looking for a scanner that worked unfer Linux for some time. I always read carefully all scanner-related messages posted to the Debian lists and to the "Ask Slashdot" section of /. Well, I read pretty good comments about the UMAX scanner so I decided to give it a try. My experience has been completely positive! Everything worked out of the box with no problems at all. I installed SANE, recompiled my 2.1.131 kernel with generic SCSI support and voila! SANE is pretty cool. It even allows you to scan over the network. The command line scanimage utility is very good and the xscanimage X-based utility is very nice too. Debian has packages to convert the output from scanimage (PNM -portable aNyMaP- formats) to almost any graphic format. The scanner+SANE combination together with the HylaFAX fax software is a powerful team that allows to send faxes just like a normal fax machine does. peloy.-

Is this >possible? I have thought about this but have been unable to find a better solution. The problem is that upstream ncpfs-2.0.x and ncpfs-2.1.x are different packages and I don't know how to create a binary package (a .deb) from two different source packages. Also, packages ncpfs and ncpfsx have lots of binaries, not just the ncpmount and ncpumount binaries, so this will add more complexity to these stub scripts. If someone comes with a better solution than having two packages I am willing to consider implementing it. Some people suggested that I use alternatives. That looks like a good idea for packages with a small number of binaries like packages smbfs and smbfsx but for packages like ncpfs and ncpfsx the number of alternatives that would need to be set up is quite large. So, in this case, I preferred to have ncpfs and ncpfsx conflict with each other so only one can be installed at any time. Regards, E.- -- Eloy A. Since the package ncpfsx is new, processing takes longer than for packages that already exist so it'll take some time until you see it in the main Hamm distribution. New packages always stay in the Incoming directory of master.debian.org that is the directory that receives package uploads done by the Debian maintainers. If you want to use a new package before it is integrated into the main distribution, you need to use a site that mirrors that directory. Try ftp://ftp.de.debian.org/pub/debian-incoming. Re: Two minor hamm bugs
Hi, I am the maintainer of the Debian samba package so the first part of this message corresponds to me... Shaleh <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: : When installing samba, the script in /etc/init.d has an error at the : top. I chose to use inetd and not having it start on boot. The script : does a `grep -q blah && exit 0`. This should be '||' and not '&&'. No, "grep -q blah && exit 0" is correct. What happens is the following: the only way I have found so far to tell whether Samba is running from inetd or as daemons is to examine /etc/inetd.conf and see if there are entries for netbios-ns (or netbios-ssn) that aren't commented out. The script /etc/init.d/samba must detect how Samba is running and if it is running from inetd it must do nothing, just exit. This is because Samba will be started automatically by inetd when there is traffic in UDP ports 137-139. If you change "grep -q blah && exit 0" to "grep -q blah || exit 0" then the script _will not_ exit when Samba is running from inetd. Instead it will continue execution until the end of the file. If this happens, the script will try to start nmbd and smbd (the Samba daemons) which is a very risky bussiness because sooner or later they will be started by inetd. Also, if you do the above change, Samba won't ever be started by the script nor inetd if Samba is chosen to be run as daemons. This is because the script will exit at the very top of the file. I guess you are reporting this because you chose to run Samba from inetd but you are not seeing any nmbd or smbd processes running. This is because inetd hasn't started any yet because there is no traffic at the UDP ports 137-139. Oh, by the way, I read this message by lucky change because the subject did not mention anything about Samba. I would suggest next time the bug tracking system is used (see www.debian.org/Bugs/) or write the word "samba" in the subject. See ya! E.- dd -- Eloy A. Hi Hamish, > Hi again. Sorry about this. I forgot that you had to use smbpasswd > to set the passwords. It works now from smbclient on a couple of > machines although my NT has gone into denial mode and wants a > restart I think. I was going to reply to your previous message and the I got this one. I am glad that your problem is solved. I recently took over maintenance of the samba package. Starting with samba_1.9.18alpha12-1, sambades gets replaced (conflicts with) sambades. The reason is that in the new 1.9.18 series, support for encrypted passwords has been built in without the need for the libdes libraries. This makes Samba exportable without any legal problems. The version in Hamm right now is samba_1.9.18alpha12-1. I created a samba_1.9.18alpha13-1 that I never released but now I am planning to release 1.9.18alpha14-1, that was released a couple of hours ago. 1.9.17p5 is out there but I am not packaging that because the release of the 1.9.18 series is inminent. Also, the current alpha series have reached a high degree of stability, which makes them suitable to be delivered a "Debian quality" software. I recomend you upgrade to Samba 1.9.18alpha14-1, that will be available by tomorrow. Regards, E.- -- Eloy A. Hi, I started to maintain ksmbfs that is now called smbfs. Last week I uploaded the libc6 version. However, I don't know anything about the 2.1 kernels. For me, it is too bloody to be in the bleeding edge of kernel development. I know that Volcker Lendecke is too busy these days to take a look at ncpfs and smbfs, packages that he maintains (upstream). Re: how do I kill samba?
Paul Miller <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: : how do I kill samba when it is loaded from inetd? .. smbd doesn't even : appear on ps -aux unless a service is being used. As a couple of Debian fellows already said, if ps -ax does not show any nmbd or smbd processes then Samba is not running. However, since it is running from inetd, traffic in UDP ports 137-139 is being listened to (by inetd) and any traffic in these ports will trigger nmbd or smbd (depending on the port). If there are any process running, you can kill them as usual with kill. However, my experience tells me that as soon as you kill nmbd another nmbd process will be initiated by inetd because traffic will trigger that. So, you will always have a nmbd running, unless you unplug your Samba server from the network or shutdown all machines (other Samba servers or any Windows box) that broadcast NetBIOS stuff. If you don't want to have any nmbd or smbd processes at all, disable the corresponding lines in /etc/inetd.conf and kill -HUP the inetd process. New releases of the Samba package (that I started to maintain) will have as an option to run Samba from inetd or as daemons. When run as daemons it is easier to shut down Samba, just do "/etc/init.d/samba stop". See ya! E.- -- Eloy A. Pentium bug: unbelievable behavior
Hello people, I just found the official Web page for the Pentium Invalid Instruction bug. The page http://support.intel.com/support/processors/pentium/ppiie/software.htm contains comments from the main OS vendors on what they have done to solve the problem. I can't beleive there are OS vendors like Sun, Novell, Microsoft, etc that say that they are not affected by the bug because they require user authentication to be able to run programs in the OS's, or that they haven't heard of problems from their customers. Gosh!!! This is unbelievable!!! Look, on the other hand, the reference to what the Linux OS has done. I am so proud of Linux! E.- -- Eloy A. Down after 75 days of up time
Shut!!! Our main Linux server that handles mail (SMTP/POP3), WWW (apache), HTTP proxying and caching (Squid), primary DNS, remote access (PPP), file and printing services (Samba and NFS), network News (innd), among other things, crashed yesterday after 75 days of up time. Boy, I can tell you it is really _stressing_ to arrive in the office on Monday morning and find your spoiled server on its biting the dust. Phones ringing every 30 seconds, people coming into your office to know what's going on, etc. In 3 hours we were up again because we took the SCSI drives to an old [EMAIL PROTECTED] MHz and recompiled the kernel. Not a big deal. After all, it was nice because now I am configuring a [EMAIL PROTECTED] MHz with an AHA 2940 Ultra and a Barracuda. It's a nice way to get rid of that old [EMAIL PROTECTED] MHz with the FDIV bug (and of course the LOCK bug). The server is running Debian 1.3.1 (started at Debian 1.1) and it was the power supply that failed. It's been quite an experience. See ya! E.- -- Eloy A. StarOffice .deb package
Hi, sorry if this has already been answered here before but I can not find the answer in my 30 day archive of debian-user: I am trying to install StarOffice with the .deb found in hamm/editors. setuid root CGI's - how bad it is?
Hi, (sorry for the off-topic question but I don't know where to ask) Excuse my ignorance but how bad is it to have a setuid CGI script? I know there should be big security issues with this but I don't know what it is. I have a CGI script that needs to write files in a user's home directory. How can I do that? Bo updates
Hi, I am wondering when all those useful packages in bo-updates will be merged into bo. I've seeing them for quite a while but I don't want to install in our production servers (running 1.3.1) anything that is untested. Debian 1.3.1 was released more than one month ago and I haven't seen any changes or updates to it. Is everything so perfect that updates aren't needed? I just had a one week vacation two weeks ago. I hope it is vacation time again so I can use my own inventation :-) I think this small project can be extended to write a small daemon that listen on a TCP port for requests for enabling/disabling the vacation message. Interface to the vacation program?
Hi, we use a SMTP/POP3 mail solution running in a Debian box. I find the vacation program very useful when users are out of the office. However, my users do not even know there is a Unix box behind the scenes because all they is a nice mail program like Eudora with a nice Windows user interface. It is just impossible to expect my users to log into the Unix box and run the vacation program. Not to mention they have to use vi to edit the vacation message. So, my question is: does anyone know if there is a WWW interface to the vacation program? I am thinking about a web page/CGI script that allows the user to specify his/her e-mail address and the vacation message and have the CGI run the vacation program for him. Later, when the user returns to the office he/she can access the same Web page to disable the vacation program (the CGI will remove the .forward file). This would be great!!! Re: Samba package
I know what's happening because I went throught this problem before: the /var/lib/dpkg/info/samba.prerm script stops any nmbd and smbd that could be running. It does this by calling start-stop-daemon but the script does not consider the case of no daemons running. To solve the problem just edit /var/lib/dpkg/info/samba.prerm and add the option --oknodo to the invocation of start-stop-daemon. This option makes start-stop-daemon return a succesful code even in the case of no daemons running, so the prerm script does not fail. This is definitely a bug in the Samba package that the new maintainer should take care of.
