properly since cdrecord doesn't seem recognize my
CD-Writer? (It fails when I use -scanbus option).

Some information about your configuration and the
error output would be
most helpful. Basically, what kind of drive is it?
What device is seen
as (hda, hdb, etc)? What does the computer say when
you boot up about
the drive (you can check the output of dmesg for
this)? Exactly what
error messages does cdrecord give? What command
line are you using to
burn the disc?

It can't get past hda. What kernel are you using (uname -a)? What

Thanks very much for your reply.

The first step of the tutorial says In control panel - CLient for

Our server is Windowx XP and I went to Control Panel but I could not

Any ideas please?

yes, and the text also says 'IN WIN98'

think man, and look for something related to network in winxp. AND if U
google a little you'll find out that during install of xp, if netcard is
detected, then 'Client for MS network', 'File and print sharing' and
'TCP/IP' is installed and enabled. By default.

Find your Local area conn, right click properties .then U have it.

and there in the advanced tab U also have settings for firewall, first try
to disable, if U then can connect, enable it and configure it.

good luck.

thunderbird - webmail - hotmail extension permission?

Hi, I'm testing thunderbird to download from my hotmail account. Had the
account for many years so I still read mails there from time to time.

I think there is some permission problem running tb and the extension as
normal user. I have read something about write access, but has not found
out where I need it.
I first installed the webmail ext. then hotmail and updated. No problem
setting it up as root, but as normal user I don't get the option for
webmail account when adding new account.

Can anyone please help, google was not my friend this time

procmail filter and amavis bypass

2006-09-11 Thread Ernst-Magne Vindal

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi,
I've been searching the web and maillists for some solutions to my little
problem, but has not found it. Hope some of you gurus can help.

First procmail filter.
I have a filter that take mail sent to one of the users from one spesific
mailaddress, forward to me and then delete it.
I have tested two solutions, I'm far from good at procmail filter so some
advise for best filter would be apreciated.

So far I tryed:
:0
* ^From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
! [EMAIL PROTECTED]
/dev/null

and

:0
* ^From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
{
:0c
! [EMAIL PROTECTED]

:0
/dev/null
}
for me it looks like they do the same, there is some differences in the
log only, same result. But i don'n know which one is best to use.

The second is this and amavis. All mail inn and out is scanned by amavis,
but when the filter above is executed amavis will scann the same mail
again. Is there a way to avoid this?

Thanks

I was wondering if someone has made the 1.5.1 or 1.4.8 versions of
SquirrelMail available in .DEB format by any chance? I am running 1.4.4

Uhm, not sure why you believe this to be the case. One of the
reasons I use Thunderbird is because of its ability to store sent mail on an
IMAP store. Prior to Thunderbird it was one of the requirements of moving to
a pure IMAP store which I found lacking, even in Sylpheed-claws. Granted that

I have used it (.5, .6?) has been capable of storing sent mail to an IMAP
store. In fact, here's the relevant preference directive:

user_pref(mail.identity.id1.fcc_folder, imap://[EMAIL PROTECTED]/outbox);

It seems the problem is gone after I changed the setup to the following:

1. In Copies Folders, Check Place a copy in:
2. Select Other and then pick your Sent IMAP folder manually

That is, don't use the default Sent folder which provided by TB, but pick it
up manually as it is a normal IMAP folder.

BTW, I am using version 1.5.0.5, I don't know if it works for any other version.

Good Luck!

I prefer rtorrent over btdownloadcurses as I can change various options
on-the-fly e.g. upload/download speed, priority of a torrent, change
number of people that can concurrently upload from you, min/max peers
etc. You can manually announce your stats to the tracker. It allows you
to run multiple torrents and save them in different directories too. And
most importantly it is small and runs while using only a few MB of RAM.

The project page http://libtorrent.rakshasa.no also claims that On
high-bandwidth connections it is able to seed at 3 times the speed of
the official client. Not sure how true it is, but the performance has
been great with the added features.

So, if you want try rtorrent rather than µTorrent through wine.

PS: replied to Ernst by mistake than onlist.

yes, thats ok

But I also did try rtorrent, ok app but when adding the forth torrent it
craches...
I'll see if I just keep useing btdownloadcurses or try find the reaseon
for rtorrent to crash.

album and option medium

2006-08-01 Thread Ernst-Magne Vindal

Hi,

So far it seams OK, but I'm unable to get the option -medium to work.
From google and man page I found I can use -medium 640x480 or %, -medium 33%.
non is working.
I have also moved the option on the command line, from start to end,
nadaonly get full size images.
After every retry I also deleted the conf file so no old options was used.

Any pointers please?

best pactice - apache, rewrite, ssl, virtualhost or .htaccess

2006-07-31 Thread Ernst-Magne Vindal
Hi, I'm running Apache2 on Debian Sarge and redirect some sites to https.

I have:
debian 2.6.8-16sarge1
apache2 - 2.0.54-5 with mod_ssl, mod_rewrite

I have tryed to redir with .htaccess file and by config virtualhosts. Both seams
to work ok, but will be happy for some comments for best practice.

Another thing is redirection, virtualhosts and url's.
I have not managed to redir http://webmail.domain.com to
https://webmail.domain.com. webmail is a virtualhost. But i can redirect to
https if I redirect to https://domain.com/webmail. Is that the only way to do
it? If so is there a way to keep the url in browser at webmail.domain.com even
if redirected domain.com/webmail?
I've googled around some and only found the [R] to put at the end of
RewriteRule. But some say that it will show only the url typed, and some says it
will show the url that user is rediredted to.anyhow it makes no different.

 According to:
 http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/howto/htaccess.html#when

 quote
.htaccess files should be used in a case where the content providers
need to make configuration changes to the server on a per-directory
basis, but do not have root access on the server system. In the event
that the server administrator is not willing to make frequent
configuration changes, it might be desirable to permit individual users
to make these changes in .htaccess files for themselves. This is
particularly true, for example, in cases where ISPs are hosting multiple
user sites on a single machine, and want their users to be able to alter
 their configuration.

However, in general, use of .htaccess files should be avoided when
possible. Any configuration that you would consider putting in
a .htaccess file, can just as effectively be made in a Directory
section in your main server configuration file.

Best partitioning with dualboot?

2006-04-10 Thread Ernst-Magne Vindal

Hi all,

I've had some problem with my laptop harddisk. It is the partitioning that
is part of the problem.
I've had this sarge install for some years now, with dualboot with
windoze. I think the partition was:

/dev/hda1 primary bootwindoze xp
/dev/hda4 extended with logical drives
/dev/hda5 logical another fat32 partition
/dev/hda6 logical /
/dev/hda7 swap
/dev/hda8 logical /home (the rest of the disk

The problem was after I formated hda1 and reinstalled windoze. After that
it was just like a partition was gone / was suddenly hda5

I was able to get the / and /home partition with dd and tested to restore
the / part, that was OK.

I've tested partition with fsck and got no errors so I dont know what went
wrong this time when reinstalling windoze. Usually I just install it from
the second dos part, start debian with cd and rerun lolo, thats it. No I
was not able to read the disk parts with either fdisk of qparted from
Knoppix.
Anyhow, I deleted the old fat32 part and created a new primary linux
partition, restored the image and rebooted from the new partition, then
made ext3 filesystem with no problem. This is 6 G of total 40.

So, what is the best way to partition the rest this time? Any hints or
tips?

Yes, cdrecord is what you need. I'm also a Windowmaker user and the

I think you need to install it as suid root or whatever to be able to burn

Hi, not sure about psc1402, but for my psc2175 I use vuescan, very nice

Do you find that you need to stop the printing service before a scan? I
haven't tried mine in a while because it used to lock itself up. I
recently read that /etc/init.d/hplip stop (or whatever its called) before
 scanning was required.

 A

No, no need to do anything. I use cups for printing, or just the command
lp when printing from emacs og pine.
I think the scanner is initializied when starting vuescan (it sounds like
that).
The printer is normally connected to another debian box that acts as a
server, printing with samba from linux and windoze clients. Just
connect/reconnect between the two machines when I need the scanner on my
desktop.

Running kernel 2.6.8-16, sid.

 hi,

got the last package of vuescan from a hamrick-site (.tgz). (thanks!!)
put it in my home_file and *untarred* it. it should work for the 1400 hp
series ( i controlled that), but on my machine (sarge, 2.6.8-2-386
standard kernel) it says :there is no scan-device on this machine

 i am confused.

anybody knows how this can happen?

Also check /proc/bus/usb/devices

Running sane-find-scanner or scanimage -L as root correctly identifies
my scanner, an HP 6200C. Running the same commands as a regular user
does not find scanner. I am a member of both the scanner and saned
groups. This has been working correctly for quite some time as I built
this system more than a year ago and have been using the scanner up to
now. It has been a couple of months since I have used the scanner and
there have been a lot of updates since then so I can't tell you what all
has changed on my system since I last used it.

Some other irregularities that show up are that occasionally running
scanimage -L as root won't find the scanner either and I have also had
it report a segmentation fault. When that happened I made sure all my
usb utilities and libsane were all from Sid and it hasn't occured since.

If I try to run scanimage as root from the bash prompt here are the
results I get.

Job:/home/ffreeloader# scanimage -d hp:libusb:002:003 --format tiff

scanimage: sane_read: Error during device I/O

The scanner will attempt to start--goes into it's warmup cycle--but
after a few aborted attempts at starting a scan it will quit. The error
message is given before all scanner activity stops.

You just need to use ATAPI, not SCSI.

In my cdrecord.conf I have:
CDR_DEVICE=cdrom
# drive namedevice speed fifosizedriveropts
#
cdrom=  ATAPI:/dev/hdc  -1  -1  burnfree -v

Then I just do:

cdrecord -v -eject myimage.iso

2006-01-03 Thread Ernst-Magne Vindal
Hi, suddenly I got problem with my Cisco Aironet.

I have used it with kernel-image-2.6.8-2-686 for over a year now, but

Its an integrated net card, not pcmcia.

There has been no changes at the router.

Don't know mush about this card or configuring it so any help or pointers

raid - superblock problem?

2005-12-29 Thread Ernst-Magne Vindal
Hi, can someone help me understand this problem about disks/raid/superblocks

I have a sw raid5, tree IDE disks that is split up to md0/ md1/ md2/, ext3
filesystem.
They are all in fstab and autostarts just fine. but...

if I do :
ns01:~# mdadm --detail /dev/md0
/dev/md0:
Version : 00.90.01
  Creation Time : Thu Dec 22 06:23:13 2005
 Raid Level : raid5
 Array Size : 48821248 (46.56 GiB 49.99 GB)
Device Size : 24410624 (23.28 GiB 25.00 GB)
   Raid Devices : 3
  Total Devices : 3
Preferred Minor : 0
Persistence : Superblock is persistent

Update Time : Fri Dec 30 00:18:42 2005
  State : clean
 Active Devices : 3
Working Devices : 3
 Failed Devices : 0
  Spare Devices : 0

 Layout : left-symmetric
 Chunk Size : 64K

   UUID : 6d2dadcf:013b706c:4138686d:94f45902

   1 2251 active sync /dev/hdc5
   2 22 692 active sync /dev/hdd5
ns01:~#
Here it says Superblock is persistent, and if I do:
ns01:~# mdadm -Q /dev/md0
/dev/md0: 46.56GiB raid5 3 devices, 0 spares. Use mdadm --detail for more
detail.
/dev/md0: No md super block found, not an md component.
ns01:~#

and

ns01:~# mdadm -E /dev/md0
mdadm: No super block found on /dev/md0 (Expected magic a92b4efc, got
)
ns01:~#

Hwat does it mean that super block is not found? I have googled a lot
around but is not able to find out if or what to do.

Im running stable, kernel-image-2.6.8-2-686 2.6.8-16sarge1. Ihave also
tryed kernel-image-2.6.8-2-386 2.6.8-16sarge1.

It is tha same for md0-3, but they are mounted and running.

Please help

It means that the /dev/md0 RAID is not itself a component of some other
RAID.

In the normal case you wouldn't -E the RAID itself, but rather
its individual components: mdadm -E /dev/hda3 or whatever.

good easy antivirus

2005-12-14 Thread Ernst-Magne Vindal

Hi, I'll need some recomandations/pointers/howto implement this.

I'm running debian 2.6 stable with postfix/Courier-IMAP/Courier-POP3 and
mail delivery to ~/Mailbox

It is both windoze and linux clients that get their mail from here. On
linux its primary pine as mailclient and windoze clients are mostly
running appz like outlook. It's also got squirrelmail for users to read
mail.

In addition is it running samba to to give windoze/linux users their
~/home share and apache2 with users own home sites and proftp for
up/download.

Everything is stored on raid5, sw raid (which I also got some problem
with, but that's another thread:)) on different partitions.

The antivirus sw need to scan all out and incoming mail, and rest of the
filesystem. I'm not a debian expert so a easely implemented sw will be
prefered:-).

Someone?

 Hello all,

few websites the browser hangs while loading the page. Most of the time
when Mozilla hangs, it shows in the status bar that it is waiting for
some advertisement website. Konqureror tells that it is loading the last
image of the page and hangs. Firefox shows similar behaviour. Example:

Most likely you would want to make each side an rsync server for the

As for getting the data on your windows side, this is decided by what

go for the solution with rsync, much better than ftp, and the size of the

cups print to samba host

2005-05-10 Thread Ernst-Magne Vindal

Hi, I got some problem printing to a windoze server with a local connected

On my laptop I have cups installed, both client and server for locally
installed printer/scanner and to be able to print to this hp920.
Some days ago I had to reinstall my laptop and I have installed the same
application now as last time, also used the same .conf files.
I can connect to shares on the windoze box without problem, the same
account name on debian as on the windoze.
when trying to print as I did before reinstlling I get the following error
in cups: Connection failed with error NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME

As I sayd, I can connect to the windoze box's share with the name and
name.domain and ipaddress. I get the same error in cups after 60sec with
all tree options, name, name.domain and ip. I can also ping the host.

You're totally off. :) The crontab entry quoted above is malformed; it
looks to me like you or something else has taken a line from
/etc/crontab and copied it straight into another crontab file. However,
/etc/crontab has a special syntax: it has an extra field for the
username, that is root above. When you use lines like that in other
crontab files you need to remove the username field.

 Cheers,

why not just post something relevant (as that is why you joined the list

Sometimes takes 30mins or so for message to come back from the

  hugh

Sorry about this, never do it again.

  So to my question,
I have a debian box configured as firewall with IP tables. Basicly
exepting all traffic out and only ssh in. But this rule say Allow
everyone access. Her is from the firewall script:
  snip
  /sbin/iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport ssh -j ACCEPT
  /sbin/iptables -A INPUT -p udp --dport ssh -j ACCEPT
  /snip

Why do you allow inbound UDP port 22? I've never heard of any sshd
 running over UDP.

Well...there you see, I need help:)
That was taken from a google result, I thought about the same thing, but
wasn't 100% sure so I just added UDP as well.

Is there an easy way to change the rule so I can limit to e.g :
  one host?
  one net/subnet
  or users?

Do you mean you only want to allow packets from a given source? How
 about the --source option?

I have looked at it, that would partly solve what I have thought about
how to config my firewall. But if I read the man right, this option has
it's limitations.
I also looked at mac option, and that will, I think, cover what I thougt
of.
Let say that I only want to grant access to me, from my laptop when I'm
traveling, then I could use that option. Right?

As for 'users', what do you mean? You can match outgoing packets with
the user running the process that generated them with the --uid-owner
option. For non-locally-generated packets, it just doesn't make any
 sense.

Mabye I wasn't clear, I want access to that firewall from outside with
ssh, and only me. Then I need som walidaton, right? If I can do that with
mac address, that's fine, but I can't limit the access to an IP
range/singel addres. Then it woulden't be posible to access when
traveling, logging on from defferent locations.

Another problem is when I run iptables -L after stop and
start,
stop and start what? iptables is not a running daemon.

I got to files for the firewall, one firewall.rules and a script
collecting the rules from that file and enableing ip forwarding. Then I
can: start, stop, restart, list.

I'll get the same result. Is there a way to flush, or clean up the
  rules?

 man iptables | less +/flush

done that, the command didn't make any difference.

(the answer is '-F'). But really, these are precisely the type of
questions that the man page can answer for you in a few seconds. Give
 it a try.

 good times,
 Vineet

have used initrd at booting time as only hinted by the installation
documentation (very poor indeed!).

Could someone out there explain (step by step) how I can tell such a
WS that I want to use initrd?
Ciao
Vittorio

You probably want something like initrd=/initrd.img in your
/etc/lilo.conf
Look for a section like this:

image=/vmlinuz
initrd=/initrd.img
label=Debian2.4img
read-only
In your / folder you will probably see the initrd.img or a link to it.

Does this mean I have to compile a new kernel? And do you happen to know where / how I tell this new kernel to support the smbfs filesystem?

Hi,
does anyone have any experience with multiCD? I'm trying the program,
but I can't get it to do anything.
When I'm trying to run it, after configuring both /etc/multiCDrc and
~/.multiCDrc, it just print out the config and exit. With no error.
When I enable the check_config it ends with Configuration was valid.
Exiting.

so, use the browser and let the mailclient be for a while.

If adding the authorization requirements in httpd.conf works, but a
.htaccess file doesn't, I suspect you need to change the options that
.htaccess files are allowed to override.

Checking my httpd.conf file, it looks like the default is to allow
.htaccess to specify auth requirements in home directories, but not the
DocumentRoot. For more details, look at the AllowOverride option in
your httpd.conf and the apache documentation.

It looks to me that archivemail is a better solution, sinse fetchmail

very odd if 2.2.20 is not a part of that.

Re: adding linux-debian in my Windows XP

2003-01-05 Thread Ernst-Magne Vindal

Hi

I would to a rezising af the hd witn pqmagic, and then make the ext2(3)
partitions during the innstall of debian.

Then make sure your c: drive is bootable and make at least a /(root), SWAP
and /home partition from the debian fdisk during install.

when debian is up and running, install lilo as bootloader and add:

other=/dev/hda1(that is if your c: partition is at the beginnig of hda)
optional

to lilo.conf

You could also try without FBdev.

For most of the suggestions I've gotten for configuration options, I've
tried both ati and r128 in the Driver spot. So far, no distinction
 between the two.

I take that back: ati generates two (IIRC) more lines in the X
server's output, about module loading. Then it crashes.

it is allways working both as button and scroll.

 Hi!
I've been using Debian for about a week now, and during that time I've
been trying to get my mouse to work properly, but I can't.

I have a PS/2 Microsoft Wheel Mouse. Since it's possible to click with
the wheel button as well as scroll, I was hoping I could use it as a
third button as well as a scroll wheel. However, I can't even get the
wheel to even scroll, much less click.

I downloaded and installed IMWheel, and followed the instuctions, but it
still doesn't work. I've also read everything I can find about
configuring mice, but nothing has been helpful. Maybe I'm just not
understanding the instructions? (This is all pretty heavy-duty for
someone who just came from Windows 9x (but it's worth it), so it's
highly likely that I'm just misunderstanding most of the manuals.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 Thanking you in advance,
 Vikki Roemer

I googled the net and found a suggestion to use a ChipID line. My config
  looks like this:

 Section Device
 Identifier Rage 128
 Driver r128
 ChipID 0x5246
 EndSection

It now works, accelerated, but crashes with OpenGL applications. Oh,
  well...

Is this on a laptop too? In Michaels case I think it was a laptop. Mine is a
stationary and it works very well now, although in Debian (Woody) it was a
PITA to configure. RedHat 7.2 and Mandrake 8.0 8.1 configure it
 automatically
out of the box, in SuSE 8.0 it needs some minor tweaking.

 Cheers,

Didn't know that Ati Rage Mobility was a mach64 chip, so that's

Anyway, I have it successfully used it at both woody and sid, and the
current installation on the x20 is woody, with a few sid packages :)

Yeah, the Rage Mobility aparently is a mach64 chip. I have the same X20
 running
 sid with 4.1.
