Caller ID + mgetty
Hi, We are running small ISP. Recently I tried to get Caller ID of PPP dial-up users. As I had read from mgetty documentation the #CID=1 modem command (with nomder of rings set = 2) switch on this mode. Howevery it does not work for me, though this Acer modem support it. Where can I find more info concerning this subject. TIA, Eugene Sevinian CRD, YerPhI, 375036, Armenia URL: http://crdlx5.yerphi.am/ Phone: 374-2-344873
some losses after hamm->slink
Hi, after upgrading to slink am unable to work with floppy: "Operation not supported by device" or something like that. Another problem is that it seems that old way of copying kernel (2.2.5) to another harddisk of floppy by doing dd with previosly set root device by rdev also does not work. Booting hangs at root device mounting point. What I am doing wrong? TIA, Eugene Sevinian CRD, YerPhI, 375036, Armenia URL: http://crdlx5.yerphi.am/ Phone: 374-2-344873
lost IP aliasing
Hi all, Recently I was installing slink on machine with 4 network cards. On of them is recognized as 3c905B (100mps). As it was put to 10mps mode at boot time I switched to kernels 2.2.5-7 and now it works fine in 100mps, but at the same time I am unable to use IP-alias which was working without any problem under old 2.0.36 kernel. Re: tulip 100mps card; need advice
George, thanks for advices, The need for such setup was due to the estimated bandwith of overall network transaction of about 0.5Gps. Thus, using CISCO or any other non-PC based solution we need to establish high speed interface between this switcher and some proxy server. The idea is that attaching network interface directly to PC would allow us to solve this task. Is it sounds stupid? tulip 100mps card; need advice
Hi ppl, today I had a problems with DEC21143 tulip cards. The problem was that card goes into 10mps mode just after linux loading. It seems that there are problems with tulip drivers. Tommorow I will try to recompile the kernel defining default media type 100baseTx. Probably this will help somehow. HOwever I would like to know is there any any 100mps cards which are working reliable at heaivy load. The main goal is to setup a network with star topology, i.e. one central box with 6-7 100mps channels attached to it as well 4-5 10mps ones. Any suggesions concerning hardware components for this central box? How much ROM, which CPU and motherboard I should look for? setting virtual hosts with apache
Hi all, It seems that configuring virtual hosts not so easy for me :( The one problem is that after adding virual stuff to httpd.conf for new_host.some_domain, I got lost my old_host.some_domain. I mean that looking from outside at both OLD and NEW addresses one can see only new_host's pages. These strings was added to default httpd.conf file (from hamm). ServerAdmin [EMAIL PROTECTED] DocumentRoot /var/www/vhosts/radiovan/ ServerName new_host.some_domain ErrorLog /var/log/apache/new-error.log TransferLog /var/log/apache/new-access.log Is something wrong in this configuration? The new_host also set in /etc/hosts as alias for original hostname. Another problem is thet putting two virtual host's parameters in httpd.conf cause warning after reloading apache. USR; dialing wrong number
Hi all, Could someone explain my why the USR33600 modem which was working without any problem under w95 does not work under Debian. It simply pretends that it works but dial absolutly wrong phone number :(((. The only differens is that under w95 it was installed with explicitly set port/irq. However,on my computer, which has w95 as well, it is set to PNP mode. Any tips are welcomed. TIA, Eugene
first attempt to run UUCP; failed
Hi all, I am trying to connect 2 Debian machine, via uucp. I am not sure that I will find answer in this mailing list, however I will try to discribe the problem shortly. At the very initial stage of communication chat script is getting NO CARRIER and exit. At the same time I use this line by minicom without problem, so it seems that the phone line is ok. I think that sometihng is wrong with uucp configuration. Hope, there are UUCP gury around here, who will help me to understand what is going on. setfont; bo, hamm, slink
Hi all, Recently I am doing some job with console fonts and it turned that after running $setfont some-font $setfont the mc and some other programs are losing the pseudographic characters which are used to draw frames, borders etc. Instead pseudographic symbols the 'q', 'x' and other leters are appearing on the screen. At the same time everything is correct on the BO. I would like to know is it fixed in slink. Thanks, Eugene Sevinian CRD, YerPhI, 375036, Armenia Phone: 374-2-344873

sorting russian text
Hi, As I am working now on a multilingual text proccesing system I tried to use 'sort' for this purpose. From "man bash" I have read that the LANG variabale is responsible for local language setting. Assuming ru_RU is appropriate variable I set LANG=ru_RU; export LANG, but :(( nothing had changed at all. Should I do something else? Help me, please! Re: wierd problem with ppp; need help!
Hello, Thanks for replying. I simply trying do not spam this list by long messages. Ok, the problem is that after upgrading to hamm on client michine I am unable to establish reliable ppp link with server which is running BO. At the same time everything is fine when I use ppp wrom w95 which is co-exist on the same client machine. Below the different information is presented regarding this problem. In order to get live example of logs I had run 'pon test' and tried to telnet to peer but hang at login during entering password. From another xterm ping-ing gave no results at all. This is the typical picture after upgating to hamm (sometime it is possible to run a pair of commands after loging in). wierd problem with ppp; need help!
Hi all, recently I have upgrated to hamm on my home computer which is running also w95. After that I have got broken ppp from linux side while everything is ok from w95 :(((. Therer where no such problems with bo. Speaking more definitly .. it looks like connection hang very soon at the beginnig of session. Sometimes I even unable to input password. As the phone line is noisy it seems that linux-ppp (from hamm) is more sensitive to it. However, I hate this possibility. Are ther any other ideas? At this point I am quite lost :((( TIA, Eugene Sevinian CRD, YerPhI, 375036, Armenia URL: http://crdlx5.yerphi.am/ Phone: 374-2-344873
Re: telnet localhost (still isn't working)
Hi again, I was advised to check inet.conf but it seems that everything is ok with telnet entry in that file. Here it is: telnet stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/in.telnetd Also there is a string "127.0.0.1 localhost" in /etc/hosts and ALL: ALL in hosts.allow. ping to localhost is working, but telnet, ftp, talk aren't. Is there any idea? pap-secrets
Hi All, Playing with ppp I have found that It is impossible to connect from w95 box into linux if there exist /etc/pap/pap-secrets file. Everything is ok when I delete this file. It looks like w95 can not use PAP. Is it true? Or there are possible errors in /etc/ppp/options? As I understand the main propose of pap-secrets is to restrict some users to login via ppp. How can I impose these restrictions without secrets?? Any tips? Below some info which might help to understand what is going on. ^X in pine; from w95
Hi All, It seems that this is not a debian prolem, but I hope someone would be able to help me. There is a win95 box connected to my debian via ppp by mean of an old 1200 modem. During telnet session it is impossible to send mails in pine pressing ^X. Instead it sends only one 'x' symbol. The same with other CTRL+? keys. Terminal set to vt100 in telnet settings. So I can't figure out what the matter. From ppp.log it is seen that asyncmap is 0xa which is same when the situation is ok ( I mean connection from another w95 machine ). big file problem
Hi All, today I have changed the harddisk on my PC from 1.1G to ~4G WD Caviar 24300. I was quite happy when I have got running system by simply 'cp from_old_disk to_new_disk'. Everything was fine until I tried to work with big files (~400M). First I used 'dd' to make copy but system hungs at some point. Then I decided to use 'cp' and I got a lot of horrible messages about disk errors. As I remember, during 'mkfs.ext2 -c /dev/hdx' there was only "read only testing". Is there any way to do read/write test? Or, may there are other idea about this problem? TIA, Eugene Sevinian CRD, YerPhI, 375036, Armenia URL: http://crdlx5.yerphi.am/ Phone: 374-2-344873

ppp configuring with dunc
Hi all, few weeks ago I have installed Debian from self made CDs with 1.3.0a. It seems that everything was fine! [Exepting the fact when I did not find some nice lovely things like xman and xload] Now I am trying to configure ppp conection to my Debian machine at work. (I have already ppp conection from w95 working nice). At this point I use some scripts and files prepared by 'dunc'. After running 'dialup_connect' I am able to hear the tone from modem speaker during ~1 min but no pulse dialing at all. Although, I put debug option in command line string but I did not get any debug strings in /var/log.debug :( Following information might be usefull for understanding the situation. Thanks in advance for any help. Eugene. frequently paused modem connection
I use USR14400 modem and it works fine with mgetty. The only bad thing which I noticed so far are the short pauses (~1-5 sec) during the sessions. Unfortunatly, to say the least of it, the quality of telephone lines is not very good. However I would like to know if there are some other ("soft") reasons which can explain such a behavior. Many thanks in advance for any idea. Re: Help with IP masquerading
I also was advised to use ip-masq. to solve some routing problems, but when I tried to compile kernel (2.0.27) enabling ip-masq. I found that this option could not be activated from 'make xconfig' menus. Why? How should I activate this option? Could you perhaps try the stock mgetty? I don't > know why SIGTERM would be sent to the mgetty process. You are right, of course, this string is just the evidense of the fact that I removed this bad mgetty replacing it by the old stock mgetty. Nothing more! (It was my guilty. I put too much obsolate info in my message. Sorry.) > Do you have a valid AUTO_PPP entry in /etc/mgetty/login.config? > Did you edit this file?
