Slow, Slow, Slow

1998-08-27 Thread FRANCK . F . L . LEGALL
Hi,

The first time I used Debian it was version 1.2. I am now using 1.3
hamm which is nearly the same as 2.0, I think.

The system is really slow now. Is it because I am using the last version
of afterstep ? Is it debian 2.0 fault ?

Do you have same problems ?

Thanks
Franck

PS : my PC is a cyrix166+ + 48Meg RAM + Matrox mystique

RE: Graphical Linux Logo on boot

You can have a look at the linuxlogo (or something like this) package. It
displays the penguin at the login screen. I like it.

xcdroast and scsi

1998-07-07 Thread FRANCK . F . L . LEGALL
Hi,

I have got a philips 3610 CDR-W which is said to be supported by xcdroast
and cdrecord 1.6.

When I run xcdroast, it told me ni ' no SCSI-generic-support has been
detected '
and I can't select any cd burner in the menu.
So, I recompiled my kernel (2.0.34 with hamm) with SCSI-generic-support
selected.
It doesn't change anything.

Does I really need scsi support since my burner is IDE ?
Why this support is not detected by xcdroast (I have got no scsi card) ?

Thanks
Franck

StarOffice 4.0

1998-07-06 Thread FRANCK . F . L . LEGALL
Hi,

Sorry for my question, I think it has been asked hundreds of times.

 - Is there any StarOffice 4.0 package installer ? I only found the package
for version 3.x of StarOffice.

 - Is there any way to review old messages since I think this question
has already been asked ?

Thanks

break download

1998-07-03 Thread FRANCK . F . L . LEGALL
Hi all,

Yesterday evening, I discovered I can stop a ftp download using
netscape 4
and disconnect and then reconnect and go on the download at the point I
left it.
This doesn't work if I leave netscape while disconnected and try to go
on the download later.

I wonder :

- Is there any FTP programm which would permit to stop a download
in order to go on later even if the computer have been switch off ?
This could be
useful for huge files as staroffice...

Thanks
Franck

Re: Powerpoint equiv. for Linux?

1998-07-02 Thread FRANCK . F . L . LEGALL
I had a look at it. It doesn't seem to be 'powerpoint like' since, as I
understood,
it use command file - not direct drawing using the mouse. The same
thing could be
done using latex. Am I wrong ?

ppp problem

1998-05-29 Thread FRANCK . F . L . LEGALL
I am trying to configure Debian in order to access my ISP (Actually
compuserve in France).

I am using Debian unstable version

I did the configuration as said in the ppp-HOWTO. Then I tried to
connect manually.

First, I ran Minicom and got connected. Then I left without resetting the modem
(CTRL-A+Q).

Then I did 'pppd -d -detach /dev/ttyS1 38400 &'
Which it didn't work. The output of my /var/log/ppp.log file is :

May 28 21:50:53 albert pppd[181]: pppd 2.3.3 started by franck, uid 0

May 28 21:51:06 albert last message repeated 4 times
May 28 21:51:06 albert pppd[181]: Modem hangup
May 28 21:51:06 albert pppd[181]:
Connection terminated.
May 28 21:51:07 albert pppd[181]: Exit.

Any ideas ?

I would like to know if there is some 'excel' like software under linux.
I would like it to be free and not to big: my modem will die if I try to
transfer some 30 Mo. Is there any one in debian CDs ?

Thanks

loadlin

1998-04-15 Thread FRANCK . F . L . LEGALL
hye,

I'm regarding using loadlin to boot linux from dos.
I have got a computer at work with dos/win3.11 installed on it.
I am not allowed to format or partition harddisk.
I want to run debian on it.

The computer has 16 Mb RAM, I won't use swap memory (I know, it's a shame!!!)

Can I install all of the debian stuff in one dos directory and run
debian with loadlin ?
What does it do if I install Debian, by selecting 'mount a previously
initialised
partition' then install when this partition is my dos primary partition ?

Please, don't tell me to buy another hardisk...

Thanks a lot
Franck

Modem installation

1998-04-09 Thread FRANCK . F . L . LEGALL
Sorry for the question since it is not directly debian-related.

I bought a US Robotics external modem. I don't find any documentation
saying how to install it, how to access my internet provider (do I need ppp,
sendmail...?). Could anyone point me to the good way.

Thanks in advance

Franck
