There are a lot of people that are not that familiar with Debian, and sometimes it's comprehensible that they don't look for search engines right away; a lot of times the answers that come up on a search apply to derivatives. Ubuntu is so ubiquitous these days that I've seen plenty of people that just follow instructions meant for it, but under Debian. So it's (from a certain point of view) comendable that they come to this list instead. After all this is _the_ Debian User Group; and it's sad that sometimes they are met with less-than-tolerant responses. Although I can completely understand (and to some extent, relate to) the way some people feel when a discussion list is sometimes treated as a support desk, a more welcoming response is more likely to create a more conscientious Debian user. I'm assuming that if you don't like compiling it every time you're probably not interested in backporting, neither in creating a local version of your package, so I'm gonna give you an alternative. If you _really_ want the latest version of Claws and you _cannot_ wait for Bullseye's release (best guess right now would be late July), you can install the version from Testing using Pinning [1]. You basically add testing to your sources.list and tell APT that you don't want it to install stuff from Testing unless you tell it to. AFAIK in Stretch Mutt actually means Neomutt. There was a flamewar between the package maintainer and the Mutt guy a while ago about that. It wasn't pretty[1,2]. In Buster, Mutt means Mutt, and Neomutt means Neomutt. I suppose if you want to use "Vanilla" Mutt in Stretch you need to get it some other way. Hello! Thanks for all the replies; indeed the first option I found when searching for alternatives was AnyDesk; however it falls under the same scope as TeamViewer, of limiting free usage (as in "free beer") for "personal usage" while charging for "commercial" use. As much as I don't want to, I might have to go with the VPN option. Which might be troublesome since some of these systems are located in remove areas (literally - like the middle of the Amazon forest or high up in the Andes Mountain Range). Remote Access
Greetings! At work, we have several computers that are located at different locations throughout the country. Some of them are highly inaccessible by usual means, and it requires a certain planning to reach them to have direct access. Therefore, we have been using TeamViewer software to access those machines remotely. However, the "powers that be" have decided that TeamViewer is not worth the investment on a commercial license for unrestricted use, and therefore I have been asked to find a replacement. Do any of you good fellows know of some software (or service for that matter) that might perform the same task? Regular VNC (e.g. tigervnc) is not quite enough, since each site runs inside the infrastructure of other people, and therefore we do not have control over their networking environment; some of the have real IPs, and others are behind firewalls and NATs, which render a regular direct connection impossible. Tracking the next Stable release
Greetings! Sometimes people ask me when is Debian going to release its next Stable; that is not an easy answer, since it is not time-based but rather based on the number of Release-Critical bugs. So I started thinking it would be nice to have a convenient way of knowing how far along the process is, but the only way I found to do that was to open https://bugs.debian.org/release-critical/other/testing.html and check itevery time. Not anymore; I have concocted a small python script that retrieves the page, parses it and posts it to twitter. Everyone is welcome to follow (@debian_tracker), naturally; I've chosen 12:00 GMT as a standard time for daily updates. Here's hoping at least some people find it useful. https://twitter.com/debian_tracker Cheers, Francisco -- []'s, Francisco M Neto GPG: 4096R/D692FBF0 signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part
Quanto falta para o Release
Boa tarde! It's unfortunate that, as yet, a remedy has not been > forthcoming. Thanks for your input, and Curt and Reco as well. I'm not a big user of Synaptic myself, although sometimes it's easier to mark several packages and not worry about dependencies, instead of going through all the trouble of making several apt searches in command line. \begin{rant} That being said, my *main* beef with Synaptic being out of Buster is an entirely different matter. I would not object to removing it from the release, *if* a viable alternative was available with at least the same level of functionality, which does *not* seem to be the case. What is even worse, though, is the attitude of some people about that. I asked the same question I asked in my previous email in #debian-next yesterday, only to leave the channel before the flamewar became full fledged. I was "gently" reminded by certain people there of why, in the end, I have never gone all the way into trying to become a DM or a DD. Synaptic, which provides a very useful functionality to a large number of users, was unapologetically removed from the release because it does not work with the "default" installation. Which is understandable, but also extreme. If someone happens to *not* use the default installation, be it by not using Gnome, or not using Wayland, they are kept from updating an important piece of their maintenance toolkit. And that's inexcusable, especially when all they can say about it is "maintainer didn't do his job" or "if you want this fixed, do it yourself". Well, no. Being a free software user or even a Debian enthusiast does not make me a specialist in packaging, or in Synaptic internals, or Wayland internals for that matter. When someone who claims to be a Debian Developer or Maintainer or whatever, who is in a position of being responsible for ensuring that the release is as good as it can be, excuses themselves from fixing a Release Critical bug just because "they have better things to do", they are not doing a very good job. And, to be quite honest, I don't think they should be in that position. Sadly, it's an attitude that I have encountered more often than not when trying to dialogue with people involved in Debian (or in Gnome, by the way). And that's just very sad. \end{rant} Have a good day, gentlemen. Francisco -- []'s, Francisco M Neto GPG: 4096R/D692FBF0 signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

Re: HURD and Linux on same partition
Porting is not the same as installing on the same filesystem. Each version of Debian you mentioned needs its own filesystem to work with. Again, this is NOT a simple matter of just using the same files with a different kernel! The infrastructure of each OS is fundamentally different. You NEED to use a different partition for each of them. Good luck. Re: HURD and Linux on same partition
I don't think it's just a matter of sharing libraries and system files. This is not just another kernel version, it's an entirely different kernel. A backup might not be enough, and even if it is, keep in mind that every time you decide to switch from Hurd to Linux or vice-versa you will need to restore a backup, which means an intermediate boot to restore the backup before you can boot your system again. --Francisco On Mon, 2018-12-10 at 19:36 +0100, Marek Mosiewicz wrote: > W dniu 10.12.2018, pon o godzinie 15∶11 -0200, użytkownik Francisco M > Neto napisał: > > Either create a virtual machine (VirtualBox, qemu, etc) or find > > some > > space for a new partition. Either create a virtual machine (VirtualBox, qemu, etc) or find some space for a new partition. GNU/Hurd is an entirely different operating system and it will ruin you Debian installation if you try to install it in the same partition. My 2¢. A debian-user- espanha? A debian-user-peru? A debian-user-uruguay? --Francisco -- []'s, Francisco M Neto http://www.fmneto.com.br/publickey.gpg signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part
--Francisco On Mon, 2018-10-15 at 11:10 -0300, Diego Paludo wrote: > Estou de acordo com as propostas.
Re: Nvidia drivers
Thanks for the answer! First, checking installed kernel headers was the first thing I tried when dkms failed. I'll try using the workaround when I get home tonight and see how it goes. I try not to use too much stuff from sid, especially on essential systems like this. However I did not understand exactly what was the problem. I assume it was something that was changed in the kernel since it was the kernel upgrade that "broke" the driver, but it might also have been something in the driver that was addressed in the kernel. What exactly happened? I'm not a driver hacker so I don't really understand what is the issue... If you don't mind me asking, what is it about Stretch that you didn't like? Jessie is quite old itself and very outdated. As Dominic has stated, downloading source and compiling may prove _incredibly_ painful, especially since you're running Debian 8, which means you might have to end up downloading, compiling and installing most of GTK, which might make things extremely difficult to maintain in you system. > I think (3), while not impossible, will require updating too many > shiny > new things from GTK. I've been thinking the same thing since my last bout with the drivers. I don't know what's happening - maybe the hook is there but it's not working properly, or maybe the package maintainers is not aware of this issue (which I think is unlikely). I think the hook is there, somewhere. I've recently upgraded from 4.15 to 4.16 and everything worked out fine, and I didn't need to reinstall the drivers nor build any kernel module. It might be a version-related issue. Checking Debian's bug tracker I've found a bug that seems to be related to what happened to us, from 2014 (last updated in 2015), and it's still flagged as outstanding. We need some tests to be sure. I have an extra partition that I can use for testing, but it might take some time. -- Francisco
Re: backports on kernel 4.15 and nvidia-driver 390 crashes x
Hello, I had a similar problem when I upgraded from Stretch (4.9) to Buster (4.15). The nvidia driver stopped working but after reinstalling it started to work again, supposedly because it needed to rebuild the kernel module with headers from the new kernel. Maybe you're having a similar issue?
-- Francisco On Wed, 2018-05-02 at 10:04 +, Nei Moreira wrote: > Prezado Francisco, > > Bom dia!
Re: Install 9.4 on acer V15 Nitro 4K -> black screen after choosing installation method; Kali live running and Ubuntu installation no problem
Here are a few ideas bases on my own experience: 1) Is your BIOS up to date? I'm not trying to pin this issue down on BIOS issues, but who knows. 2) What is your exact BIOS/UEFI configuration? When I installed Debian on my laptop I couldn't get grub to install correctly at first, but I managed it by enabling Legacy support while keeping UEFI as the default boot method.
Re: Not receiving emails
My best guess is really Gmail's handling of subscriptions. When I mark a message as spam it also asks me if I want it to try and unsubscribe from it. Maybe it's related to that behavior somehow. -Francisco On Thu, 2018-04-19 at 11:07 -0400, Cindy-Sue Causey wrote: > On 4/19/18, Francisco M Neto <fmn...@gmail.com> wrote: > > Yeah, being subscribed is not an issue. Re: Not receiving emails
Yeah, being subscribed is not an issue. I have verified that myself more than once. In fact my earlier message appeared in the list archives, so that's working fine. What I don't understand is why I haven't received any emails from the list. At first I considered it could be a problem with my Evolution setup, but verified with gmail's web client and messages were not arriving at all. For some reason, these responses have arrived without a problem. I _know_ something was wrong because despite being a bit slow on traffic for the past few days I have seen emails show in in archive but not in my inbox. As it turns out, Dan Purgert's assertion was correct, and I found the lost messages in gmail's spam folder. Which is odd since I have never had this kind of issue before... my guess is the way gmail handles unsubscription messages may have caused this behavior. Anyway, it seems to be OK now. Thanks for the replies. -Francisco On Thu, 2018-04-19 at 15:58 +0200, Jochen Spieker wrote: > to...@tuxteam.de: > > On Thu, Apr 19, 2018 at 02:11:24PM +0200, fmn...@gmail.com wrote: > > > I apologize for the seemingly useless email, but I have re-subscribed > > > to the list but I haven't been receiving new messages. > > > > (sending to you, CC list, just in case) > > > > According to your mail's headers, as they arrive here, the list thinks > > you are subscribed: > > > > X-Spam-Status: No, score=-10.6 required=4.0 tests=DKIM_SIGNED,DKIM_VALID, > > DKIM_VALID_AU,DKIM_VERIFIED,FREEMAIL_FROM,LDOSUBSCRIBER,LDO_WHITELIS > > T, > > ^ > > Interesting! Weird problem with Cinnamon
Hello everyone, I'm having a weird problem with cinnamon on debian jessie. I installed it from regular repositories but for some reason the panel does not respond to mouse clicks. If I press the Super key it works normally, and I can even select things from the menu using the mouse. but the panel itself refuses to acknowledge anything from the mouse. Any ideas? francisco -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Re: transparent terminals in cinnamon
My first guess would be that the terminal emulator you're using does not support transparency. Gnome-terminal, for instance. Try using one that does, like sakura (apt-get install sakura). Re: [SOLVED] Re: mouse cursor disappeared after upgrading from wheezy to jessie (xfce 4)
Glad I could help, although I wouldn' call that a solution. I'd rather have the proprietary drivers working with a mouse cursor that I could see. Also, since you're using a laptop, have you tried Alt+Fn+F2? No, it is not normal. As Sven Joachim says, activation of a tty is on demand and almost instantaneous. There were bugs relating to the behaviour you describe but they have been attended to.
