You can do a:  apt-get dist-upgrade
to upgrade those 40 packages that are not upgraded.

First, do you have access to ADSL internet?
If yes, change your /etc/apt/sources.list to something like:


deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ etch main non-free contrib
deb-src http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ etch main non-free contrib

deb http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main contrib non-free


then run try to run apt-get update, if you still get the same message as 
before, then run apt-get install -f
and give us the output.

Well, constructors keep changing the chipset type in wireless card. So, you 
need firstly to do: update-pciids
and then to give us the output of: lspci.
