Re: APC UPS'es

1998-02-25 Thread Gerardo Lamastra
Well, we use a Linux powered server which is tied to the APC SmartUPS 1000
and everything works right.
I think you should not have any problem to configure the UPS; the
genpowerd daemon is used, with the following command line:

/sbin/genpowerd /dev/ttyS1 apc-advanced

Re: System reboots while booting

1998-02-21 Thread Gerardo Lamastra
Hello,

my name is Gerardo and I have written a similar mail few days ago!!

[EMAIL PROTECTED] has replayed me that he has also experienced the
same problem, and that Award BIOS can be the cause!
I have the following config:

1) PowerBoard for Pentium 233 MMX (TX with 512 KB cache!)
2) 64 MB DRAM
2) S3 Virge

Some usual stuff. I also thinked that advanced serial ports can cause some
problem; they are implemented using USB system (I think); I am going to
investigate further, I let you know!!
For now, I am thinking about a motherboard substitution!!

RE: Kernel doesn't boot!!

1998-02-19 Thread Gerardo Lamastra
Thanks for your quick answer...
I will test BIOS version and all the stuff about the hardware. I have also
another machine with Award BIOS, I will also test if there is some
difference about version numbers.
I'll do it as fast as I can!!

Regards...

Gerardo

Kernel doesn't boot!!

1998-02-18 Thread Gerardo Lamastra
Hello everybody!

I wonder if anybody has experienced a similar problem: while trying to
install the kernel onto a new machine, the kernel starts booting, it
arrives to the following:

 checking hlt instruction: ok
 ...

Then the machine is suddenly reset and the familiar BIOS screen is shown
again!!

The system is a new Pentium Motherboard:
BIOS reports that is it a HX 512 KB cache system, also called
Powerboard P586 TX ( ?? )
CPU is Intel Pentium MMX 233
The motherboard supports Bios mastering for IDE devices and has 2 serial
port which can be configured as standard COM or USB Serial Bus port.
I have tried EVERYTHING: starting with bare configuration, disabling
caching, using the safer possible configuration. I have tried to disable
hard disk and boot using only floppy disk (boot + root).
I have tried different kernels, from Slackware, Debian and RedHat.
I have tried also the new 2.31.0 kernel.

The really strange thing is Win95 (OSR 2) boots without any problem and
withu t using any non-standard configuration.

Is it possible that Linux cannot do what Win95 does ? I won't believe it,
but I actually need to change motherboard to have a fully working system.
(The other devices should not be involved in the problem, perhaps only
serial ports can do some mess, but I think this is very unprobable)

Is anybody who knows something about this motherboard model... I can try
to dig other info, but it is very difficult since Linux suddenly reset the
system and it is very difficult to read what is displaying. Is it possible
to redirect kernel output at boot on a serial line, and if so, is it
possible to read it easily, for example using another Linux box ?

Thanks everybody!

Problems with the Xfig Package

1997-11-27 Thread Gerardo Lamastra
I have experienced the following proble with the Xfig: when you select the
T icon (for text writing), xfig hangs and also the xterm shell blocks
forever! I need to kill xfig and the shell!!

I have the Xfig 3.2 patchlevel 0 (Protocol 3.2); i have tried to use the
previous version Xfig 3.1 patchlevel 4 (Protocol 3.1) but it has the same
problem. I have used both onto a RedHat installation on a PC and Alpha at
the lab and it works fine. I have Debian installed here at my office, but
Xfig doesn't work here!
I have read about similar problem in a previous message. Is anyone that
know if it is possible to fix the problem ?

Thanks in advance!!
