Re: testing or unstable?

2009-02-17 Thread Glenn Becker

Now, my question is: which one is more advisable, testing or unstable?

Excuse the basicness of my question, thanks for any reply
Rodolfo

I have been using testing for years with few problems, if that is any
indication.

I know there are 'safe' ways to get apps from other releases and mix 'em
in, but I forget the details because I do it so seldom. Martin Krafft's
book is very helpful in this area (and others!).

Using a link in the New York Times to the transcript of Flight 1549,
Iceweasel segfaults scrolling through the document.

Anyone verify this?

FWIW (very little) I was having this problem with Iceweasel a lot on what
appeared to be random sites. I recently upgraded the Flash plugin
(which felt more baroque in nature than it needed to be ... I wound up
using an Ubuntu package) and the behavior seems less frequent now.

I've searched around and couldn't find an adobe-flashplugin package. Which
repo is it from? I'm using the flashplayer-mozilla package from the Lenny
repo at www.Debian-Multimedia.org and YouTube, etc., works great for me.

Ah, sorry. It wasn't from a repo ... I went to Youtube, clicked the link
that read "upgrade to the latest version," was taken to adobe.com where I
downloaded the *.deb, installed it with dpkg, etc etc.

I will clean out all Flash - related stuff I have and try the the repo you
suggest, maybe I will have better luck.

There is an irony in my posting this at all, one that I don't like: I'm
one of those "Flash is the scourge of the Internet" types. I shouldn't

flash / iceweasel / all that

2009-01-28 Thread Glenn Becker

Hi all -

I should probably admit that I haven't been booting my Debian install
lately, and it has mainly been due to irritation with Iceweasel and
not doing anything constructive about it b/c it worked fine over on
another Linux system I have (no names ...).

I am running testing and have been for some time. I don't recall when
Flash stopped working, but this has been the case for some time. At
first, I searched in Aptitude for anything related to Flash, just to
make sure I had everything available installed. No help.

I just read over a few threads in the -user list, & on the strength of
what I found I tried simply following the "install the latest version"
link from a Flash-intensive site ... chose the (Ubuntu) .deb and installed
it. Restarted Iceweasel, enabled the new Flash player v. 10 in the
plugins dialogue and disabled the older ones. Restarted Iceweasel.

No Flash. Still got the lovely

"Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's
Flash Player. Get the latest Flash player."

Javascript is on. I did a dpkg-reconfigure on adobe-flashplugin. Restarted
Iceweasel, checked plugins ... and v. 10 of the Flash player had
disappeared and I was still getting the same message when I tried to play
anything on Youtube.

I'm 98% certain I am doing something stupid here, but would appreciate it
if someone could point me in the direction of ... something that will tell
me how to diagnose the problem and make it all better. Cuz I'm close to
throwing the laptop (or just my Debian installation) against the wall.

Thx,

Glenn

udev and kernel (testing)

2008-08-21 Thread Glenn Becker

Hello all -

I am running a testing box. Recently (end of last week, maybe?) I did
an update, & one of the packages that -wanted- to update was udev;
however, later in the installation process I was dumped to a debconf
screen that indicated the new udev would be incompatible with the kernel I
was running, & that I needed to upgrade the kernel (to 2.6.18 or
newer) first or risk rendering the system unusable.

I left the answer to the "upgrade anyway?" question on that screen at
"no", and the update pretty much bailed at that point.

So for a few days now I have put a "hold" on udev via aptitude, since I
don't see a newer kernel available ... I guess I'm wondering whether I
would be wise to try rolling my own. I did it once, but it was a long
time ago. Mainly I'm curious why a newer one hasn't shown up (perhaps
it's me doing something stupid - I'm always open to that option!). Maybe
on the other hand I should just leave the hold on udev?

Thanks,

Glenn

screen resolution question

2008-05-20 Thread Glenn Becker

Hi all -

I am running a testing box. Recently, it seems, my X settings
changed (w/o my intentionally changing them, at least as far as I can
recall) so that the screen resolution on Gnome, for example, it was
defaulting to 1400x1050. It is nice to see that my older laptop can
handle this, but ... I also have older eyes and prefer a setting of
1024x768.

So I went looking into the xorg.conf file, and found that ... no default
screen res appeared to be set! In fact the file contains almost _no_
details and consists mainly of a lot of sections that look like this:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"

... making it look like a lot of the X configuration is handled
automatically.

Well, great ... cough ... I would rather it _wasn't_ handled
automatically, because I want to choose my own settings. I've handrolled
my own .conf files for X for ages ... is there any way for me to do this
and not have my settings overwritten by an automated thingum that has no
idea what my specific needs are?

If this is an attempt at an improvement I cannot say I care much for it.
Certainly I can change the settings via the Gnome GUI, but this doesn't
help me if (as often happens on my old machine) I'd rather just run
Fluxbox.

Sorry if this is an ignorant question and has been asked before. If I need
to RTFM, just let me know where to find the relevant M and I will RTF
thing.

Thx,

Glenn

Re: Question about perl organisation on disk and CPAN

2008-04-03 Thread Glenn Becker

Hi Lesley,

If I use CPAN what is the best method to use? Should I use the cpan
command or should I use the perl -MCPAN method? And how much of a
problem is not having perl 5.10 installed going to be if I choose to
get the latest modules from CPAN?Is it possible to install 5.10 on
etch or are there dependencies that might have wider effects than
simply updating perl e.g. altering the libraries that gcc relies on?

I'm glad you posted this question, since I have wondered some of the same
things. I have a multi-OS system and have typically done my Perl-ing on my
Slackware install, and use CPAN all the time there.

I have run into conflicts a couple of times on Debian because I have
either installed modules via CPAN that were in the repository or were
otherwise mixed up in a dependency somehow. So it is an area to be
aware/careful in.

This document may help:

http://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/perl-policy/index.html

There is also apparently a Debian CPAN of sorts:

http://debian.pkgs.cpan.org/

I found both of these via

http://www.debian-administration.org

which has proved to be a helpful site.

Probably the best thing to do is edit /etc/network/interfaces to reflect
your new network settings. You will probably want to have something

switching to DHCP in a clean manner ...

2008-02-24 Thread Glenn Becker

Hi all -

I just moved from the NY metro area to the Boston metro area, and in the
process changed ISPs. My service is now significantly faster and cheaper,
but my account now assigns IPs dynamically -- previously, I'd had a static
IP.

I have the /option/ with the new provider to get a static IP but I decided
to try the DHCP thing since the static is an extra charge ... all I have
done is add the line "exec dhclient" to /etc/rc.local. Now, this _works_,
but I don't know that it is the best solution and I suspect I may have
config files in there with the old IP/gate/and so forth numbers in them.
It has been so long since I set that networking up that I've kind of
forgotten the Best Way to Do It ... and the best way to clean it up and
switch over to something else.

Can someone point me toward a good doc to read on this, or let me know if
I am going about this in an absurdly inelegant way. Like I say, it works
but I don't know that it is as good as it could be.

Maybe I'm worrying it too much.

Whereas this will work (assuming you're using gdm or kdm instead of xdm
or wdm), you'll have to do this for each runlevel.

I find it easier to temporarily disable [gkxw]dm by editing
/etc/init.d/[gkxw]dm and putting the single line "exit 0" as the first
non-comment line in the script (or, for ease of finding later, just as
the first line). This way you only have to edit one file rather than
five or so.

Re: What should I use?

2007-01-22 Thread Glenn Becker

Hi Justin -

I have never used Linux before, but I've always wanted to learn. I want to
use Debian Linux, but I don't know which to use. I am wanting to dual boot
it in my laptop with my Windows. My laptop is made by eMachines and uses a
AMD Sempron 3200+ processor. Please let me know what version to install.
Thank you very much!!!

If by version you mean you are trying to choose between "stable,"
"testing" and "unstable," my advice would be to start with stable because
one of the hallmarks of Debian is that "stable" is not released until all
involved are as sure as can be that it is rock solid.

That said you will also commonly hear that with all the work that goes
into "stable" the applications in it are actually /not/ the latest
versions by the time it comes out. This is undoubtedly true; however, as a
new user you might not care as much at first about that.

And it's easier to move up to the "testing" version one day if you want to
do that. Or install selected apps from "testing" or "unstable" if you feel
you need them - Debian makes it possible to "mix" releases, though I
wouldn't do it until you are more certain about what you are changing.

Enjoy the journey - I sure did!

Well the fix turned out to be a mixture of Magnus' suggestions and running
apt-get build-dep on locales. Thanks!

Re: mucked-up locale settings in testing

2006-03-13 Thread Glenn Becker

Is the `locales` package installed?

I /believe/ it is ... in aptitude, "locales" is highlighted green, is
marked 'ciA' in the leftmost column and is taking up 11.2 MB if I am
reading the display correctly.

If I run 'apt-get install locales' I get a shower of unmet dependencies,
mostly for kdelibs4c2a and libqt3-mt. Then at the bottom of /that/ there
is the interesting message:

locales: Conflicts: base-config but 2.53.10 is to be installed

... after which it suggests (as the output also does at the top) I try
apt-get -f install with no package names or to specify a solution with
that command. I will try searching on that line to see what turns up.

When I run apt-get -f install, I get

Need to get 0B/84.9MB of archives.
After unpacking 43.5MB of additional disk space will be used.

mucked-up locale settings in testing

2006-03-13 Thread Glenn Becker

OK, it seems the time has come for me to confront one of those topics I've
never bothered with: locales. The reason is that it seems I have some
fouled up locale settings (I don't know how) and that this is preventing
my system from updating.

The system is an all-testing one, on a Dell laptop (Inspiron 4100). I have
five other operating systems functioning ok-to-great on this box. Also,
FWIW I am back using Debian after a few years' absence.

In my use of aptitude over the past couple of weeks, it downloads packages
and then kicks out for the install, and I get a number of occurrences
of this:

perl: warning: Setting locale failed.
perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings:
LANGUAGE = "en_US:en_GB:en",
LC_ALL = (unset),
LANG = "en_US"
are supported and installed on your system.
perl: warning: Falling back to the standard locale ("C").
locale: Cannot set LC_CTYPE to default locale: No such file or directory
locale: Cannot set LC_MESSAGES to default locale: No such file or
directory

locale: Cannot set LC_ALL to default locale: No such file or directory

Obviously, LC_ALL needs to be set and isn't ...

... then more badness sets in with this:

Preparing to replace kdemultimedia-kio-plugins 4:3.3.2-1 (using
.../kdemultimedia-kio-plugins_4%3a3.5.1-1_i386.deb) ...

Unpacking replacement kdemultimedia-kio-plugins ...
dpkg: error processing
/var/cache/apt/archives/kdemultimedia-kio-plugins_4%3a3.5.1-1_i386.deb
(--unpack):
 trying to overwrite
`/usr/share/doc/kde/HTML/en/kioslave/audiocd.docbook', which is also in
package kdebase-kio-plugins

dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)
Errors were encountered while processing:
 /var/cache/apt/archives/kdemultimedia-kio-plugins_4%3a3.5.1-1_i386.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

... which is immediately followed by a number of occurrences of this:

dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of kget:
 kget depends on kdelibs4c2a (>= 4:3.5.1-1); however:
  Package kdelibs4c2a is not installed.
 kget depends on libqt3-mt (>= 3:3.3.5); however:
  Package libqt3-mt is not installed.

... and then a long list of KDE packages that could not be installed. Now,
when this first happened I thought "ah, it's testing and it will
eventually clear up," but this hasn't happened. Plus, most of the stuff
above has the appearance -- to me anyway -- of an error cascade, with the
locale stuff as the first snowflake in the avalanche.

I've tried locale-setting commands from Debian Reference, but I seem to be
caught with them in a kind of Catch-22 where I can't set the locale
because the locale isn't set correctly. I suspect this is a simple problem
to fix (even though I don't know how it arose) ... can anyone help me
here?

Let me know if more details are necessary and I will provide them - and
apologies for the length of this message.

Glenn Becker

GRUB ... extended partition ... Windows XP

2006-02-20 Thread Glenn Becker

Hi All -

I will try to make this short, but it feels like an epic at this point. :)

I'm trying to create a 6-OS laptop (80gig hard drive on a Dell Inspiron
4100): WinXP, Debian and Slackware Linux, NetBSD, FreeBSD and Solaris 10
x86.

My first try was with a primary partition for Windows and an extended
partition w/ 5 logicals for the rest. The short version of what I
encountered: GRUB did great autodetecting and booting WinXP, Debian and
Slackware. Once I installed NetBSD, however, I found that the NetBSD
bootloader did fine with WinXP and NetBSD but could not seem to boot
either Linux system.

Went back and forth with that a couple of times, then tried recasting the
disk to an extended partition for WinXP, Debian and Slack (and swap
space), then primary partitions for NetBSD, FreeBSD and Solaris; however,
I didn't get far because this time around GRUB autodetected WinXP, Debian
and Slackware fine, but will not boot Windows. What I get when I try is
this:

Booting Microsoft Windows XP Professional
root (hd0,4)
filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x7
savedefault
makeactive

Error 12: Invalid device requested

... which is sort of confusing to me. Unless I am mistaken, '0x7' /is/ the
correct filesystem type. Plus, GRUB recognized the partition correctly
upon installation. So I'm not sure what direction to take, though I've
found a lot of various hints across the 'Net.

The one oddity I am dealing with now is that somehow, after converting the
Windows partition to extended/logical, I wound up with a small drib of a
partition - 8mb - at the beginning of the disk ... which I never intended
to create. Tried to boot Partition Magic and get rid of it, but failed. So
I don't know whether that little partition-ette is causing problems, or
whether Windows XP just doesn't like being on a logical partition ...

If anybody has any good hints/advice, I would most appreciative. Thanks!

Glenn Becker

This was a good suggestion, though I have the UNIX CD. :) CD version
still works fine on my old laptop, which runs Slackware 8.1.

What I did was uninstall, install the XEphem .deb, then copy the data
files over from the CD. Works great now.

segmentation fault - XEphem

2002-11-16 Thread Glenn Becker
Hi -

I can't pinpoint *exactly* when this problem began. I'm running testing
(sarge) with a few unstable packages thrown in.

Anyway, I installed the commercial/CD package of the XEphem astronomy

week, however, I started getting a segmentation fault when I tried to
run the program.

Here is the output of a session I ran with gdb. I have little experience

any pointers based upon the following, I would appreciate any help.

problem with Nethack 3.4.0

2002-04-28 Thread Glenn Becker
Hi -

I wasn't sure whether it would be better to send this to nethack.org or
to the Debian list ... anyhoo ...

When I start Nethack in console, the basic movement commands h j k and
l, etc, are being interpreted as the corresponding '#' commands ... e.g.
#h #j #k #l. So that when I try to move using the 'j' command, for
example, the game responds "You can't jump very far," or something
similar.

Just thought I'd send a msg to the list and see whether anyone else had
encountered this. I'm not an experienced player, but like the game a
lot.

Thanks,

Glenn

Toshiba Satellite Pro 470CDT

2001-12-21 Thread Glenn Becker
Hi,

I won a replacement HD on eBay that is -supposed- to be compatible with an
older laptop I have ... some months ago in a rare (for me) mixup of numerals
I said on this list that this laptop was a Toshiba 740CDT, and got some
helpful advice for how to access and replace the HD.

It's actually a Toshiba Satellite Pro 470CDT, and sitting down to look at it
(the drive arrived in the mail today) tonight, I realized I have no good idea
how to get at the drive, to set about removing it and replacing it with the
new one.

Before I start, er, unscrewing anything, I was wondering whether anyone knew
of a good resource for this sort of thing. I haven't found anything on the
Toshiba website yet.

Thanks,

I futzed with XMLSpy for a time and agree: it's a nice product.

The only thing like a 'nix IDE for XML I know of is XAE and I don't
think it works with Schemas (yet). There -is- an XML editor for KDE called
(of course) KXMLEditor, but I haven't seen it for Debian yet. I've got it

df redux

2001-11-25 Thread Glenn Becker
All,

Some time ago I posted to the list about strange 'leaps' in the disk usage
reported by 'df'. The problem was eventually traced to an outsized
.xsession-errors file.

This happened to me again (as of last night, it seems - I wasn't really keeping
track). The partition is roughly 15G, half of my HD. Usage went up to 100%,
which I discovered when I tried to download my mail and failed. I looked for,
found and deleted a giant-sized .xsession-errors file. Usage went down to 64% -
better, but still far bigger than the 40% I'd sat at for weeks.

When I went to the list archives to research this, I saw a note advising a
poster not to -delete- said .xsession-errors file, but -empty- it instead,
since deleting would only delete the filehandle if the thing was open for
writing.

I guess my question is - do I have gobs of filehandle-less stuff floating
around on my system, now? And if so, how can I find it and get rid of it?

NB I've tried the 'cruft' program to i.d. whatever might be taking up the
sudden 24% of this 15G partition. 'cruft' spits out a 500MB file when I run it
with no options.

Thanks for any insight.

security updates

2001-11-25 Thread Glenn Becker
Hi all,

On the strength of what I read re: getting security updates in the list

... but all it generates when I apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade is
'Failed to fetch' and 404s. Is there a more up-to-date line for the security
stuff?

not-quite-trivial 'repeat' problem since upgrade

2001-11-18 Thread Glenn Becker
Hi,

Sorry 'bout the vague subject line - I'm tired from watcing the Leonids last
night.

The problem I'm having (I can only guess a recent upgrade did it) is that in
order to repeat-backspace -- or left/right/up/down arrow -- I have to press the
particular key x number of times, rather than just hold it down.

Which cd lead to carpal tunnel over time ... I'm on a mostly-testing box with
some unstable apps.

I checked in xkeycaps, which shows anyway that 'autorepeat' (the function I'd
guuess would need to be true for this to work) is ON for all five of those
keys. Is anyone else having this problem, or know how it could be resolved?
Maybe I just need to better learn my key-commands?

Thanks in advance

Re: vim 6.0 packages

2001-10-14 Thread Glenn Becker
Hi,

I recently upgraded to Vim 6.0 on a mostly-testing system, and seem to have
lost the ability to access Vim help. I caught part of a Vim 6.0 thread on here
some weeks ago, but don't recall whether this was addressed.

When I try to access Help I get the following:

"help.txt.gz" [readonly][noeol] 8L, 3051C
Error detected while processing BufRead Auto commands for "*.gz":
E21: Cannot make changes, 'modifiable' is off
E434: Cannot find tag pattern
Hit Enter or type command to continue

When I hit Enter, vim opens help.txt.gz, but not so it can be read by a human -
it's a screen fulla junk.

Is there an easy way to get this back? Although there's a good list of
outstanding bugs for the vim package, I couldn't find this on it & am convinced
I'm just being dunderheaded here.

Thanks for any pointer(s).

a printer for Linux

2001-05-05 Thread Glenn Becker

Hi,

I have lived w/o a printer both at home and at work for some time now. If
I need anything printed I've done so from a Mac or Windows PC. Probably
sheer laziness.

Now, however, I want to do a bit of self-publishing (poetry), and I'm
losing the printer tied to the Mac at home, so I will soon need to explore
printing from my Debian box.

As you can tell, I'm utterly clueless - what kind of a printer should I
get? I'll be printing mainly formatted text documents (whether formatted
in something like Abiword or something else, I haven't decided).

Will any PC-compatible printer do? What are the considerations, here?

keyboard problem

2001-05-01 Thread Glenn Becker

Hi,

Am experiencing an odd problem with the keyboard -- specifically the arrow
keys, it seems. Seems to be X-specific. In short, the keys don't
"repeat" ... you have to strike the down arrow key, for example, 5 times
to go down 5 lines rather than being able to simply hold the key down and
let the cursor do the walking ...

I guess this is in the realm of the annoying rather than life-threatening,
but it does involve more wear and tear both on the keyboard and on the
trusty carpals. I'm guessing from prior experience that this will involve
using xmodmap ... probably xmodmap -e [something] but I'm lost as to what
the [something] should be.

If anyone has a quick answer for this or can point me to a reference,
thanks in advance. I may have missed a thread on this - sorry if so, work
has been nuts.

X gone all goofy

2001-04-24 Thread Glenn Becker

Hi all,

First time this has happened in some time, but after a fairly minor
apt-get dist-upgrade, X no longer seems to want to work. I have attached
the full output of the command (I don't know whether it is relevant), but
the tail end of it is as follows:

Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/, removing
from list!

Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'

When reporting a problem related to a server crash, please send
the full server output, not just the last messages.
This can be found in the log file "/var/log/XFree86.0.log".
Please report problems to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).

I did notice when I looked at the error output that the kernel is
being reported as 2.2.18 ... I'm running 2.2.17! I guess that could cause
problems, eh? Not sure why this discrepancy exists.

Anyway, thanks to anyone who can shed light on this.

If it's still available you might try Perl 5 Interactive Course
("certified edition") by Jon Orwant (TPJ editor). It's massive, unwieldy
and has that god-forsaken Waite busy layout. Not to mention the fact that
the "online interactive" tie-in no longer exists ... apart from that,
though, it's a pretty good intro to Perl 5. Orwant is a good tech writer.

Urk. I just checked Amazon.com and its op. But you might find a copy on
half.com.

Re: water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink.

2001-04-11 Thread Glenn Becker

I have followed this discussion with great interest. It's been really
lively! :-)

I hardly consider myself to have achieved 'power user' status. I started
with Slackware Linux in late 1998. At this time I never touch Windows and
do not miss it.

My initial reaction to what was -- I do not argue -- an avalanche of
things-to-learn often *did* swing over to the "totally overwhelmed
and frustrated" side of things; *however,* I did and still do feel that
the *challenge* of overcoming the problems to the best of my abilities has
been the most exciting and profitable learning experience I have ever
enjoyed.

I say this happily granting that it may not be for everyone. It especially
may not be "right" if what you are doing is a Something that has to get
done tomorrow. On the other hand, if what you're looking for is a new way
to see and to use the box at your feet (or by your side, or ...) there is
no better way to go that I know of ... it is truly transforming.

This is not an apology for allusive, obfuscatory or even "bad" writing in
docs. I've seen my share of that. But the soul of the experience (if I can
use that crappy tattered word) is experiment: of trying things out and
seeing what they do. I've not been nearly brave or smart enough, but my
experience with various Linux-es, and especially Debian, has made me a
much more effective do-er.

I just got an HP49G calculator ... purchased the "PC Connectivity Kit" in

Have found *some* Linux - HP calc connection stuff on SourceForge, but was
wondering if any Debian-ers are successfully shunting stuff back and forth

Hey,

Is anyone using ssh under Debian, specifically testing?

I use wmaker, blackbox and icewm kind of interchangeably, depending on my

No terribly deep reasons why: I like the ease of changing wmaker's look,
the simplicity and cleanliness of blackbox and ... I don't know why I like
icewm. :-)

Re: Package quality

2001-03-05 Thread Glenn Becker

It is more an indication of the 'relevance' of that particular item
returned by your search. So think 'quality' of the package vis-a-vis what
the search engine is guessing you were looking for ...

F'rinstance, if I enter "VRML" as a search string, the "vrweb" package
(which has to do almost exclusively with VRML files) "rates" higher than
the package "elvis" which is a vi-type editor with the ability to
highlight, etc. VRML's .wrl files (but does a lot of other things as
well).

xa+cv, mozilla instabillity et al: SOLVED?

2001-03-03 Thread Glenn Becker

All,

I appealed to some users on the debian-chinese-big5 list re: my questions
about locales, etc ... mainly why, since I had reset all locale values to
the default "C" value, I was still seeing character replacement in
Netscape, etc (specifically, Chinese characters getting plopped in where
other international/diacritically marked/etc characters were).

Info from Anthony Fok (see below), who maintains many Debian Chinese
packages, led me to look in my ~./xsession file, where I found the line

exec xa wmaker

... so apparently either the package xa+cv or cpanel (Debian Chinese
Panel) placed the xa part of this line in .xsession. As it turns out now
that I have stripped this out, I notice that I no longer have the problem
in Mozilla (as well as many other programs) that interacting with the
program -- entering text in the address line of the Mozilla browser, for
example -- killed the program.

I can even get some programs to run from menu that were not working before
- the game bzflag for example.

So it seems that this addition to the .xsession file was a major
impediment. Seems like a bit of a bug to me!

It sounds like you have xdm running. I don't much like it either - it is
difficult to get to pure console with that thing in the way.

As a temp fix you can /bin/su root and run killall xdm. this will blow
away X and take you to console login.

If you want it never to show up again, you should K out the service in
whichever of the /etc/rcX.d/ folders it is in. I assume /etc/rc2.d/, but
I'm not sure.

Re: Mozilla instability - followup

2001-02-24 Thread Glenn Becker

I thought it might be a good idea to see if I could get an error output
for this problem, so tried firing up Mozilla from the command line - to my
surprise, the browser worked fine when invoked this way! I could enter
addresses in the location bar without the browser crashing on
me.

However, the problem re-appeared when I opened Mozilla with wmaker or
blackbox menus. So: there is a way to avoid the problem, but I'd still
like to know *why* this happens and if there is a way to fix it. It's in
the mildly-annoying-but-why-does-it-happen camp.

Mozilla instability

2001-02-24 Thread Glenn Becker

Recently I have developed an odd problem with Mozilla - unfortunate, since
I'd pretty much decided to drop Netscape and go with Mozilla as my browser
of choice.

Whenever I try to interact with Mozilla at all, whether it's entering a
new address in the location field or filling out a form, doing so blows
the app away. It just disappears. I attempt to put the cursor in the
location field, hit backspace and the whole thing goes away.

Why would this happen? Mozilla hasn't upgraded in some time, so I can only
assume it's something else that came in over an apt-get dist-upgrade.

Thanks,

i18n and fonts

2001-02-24 Thread Glenn Becker

This is in the way of a partial followup to an earlier query of mine about
locales and locale definitions ...

I managed to change LC_ALL back to what I understand to be the default
value, "C" ...

HOWEVER, I'm experiencing some weird substitutions in Netscape. Simple-ish
international characters from languages like French and Spanish are being
replaced by Chinese characters.

A good example is the "This page is also available in the following
languages" row at the bottom of the http://www.debian.org page. If is
understood to represent a Chinese character, what I see on my screen
instead of "Espanol" is "Espal" ... and what I see instead of
"Francais" is "Franis".

This even appears when I view source for the page. It seems that pairs of
characters are being interpreted as Chinese, which makes sense when you
realize that Asian character sets are double-byte. But why is this
replacement happening, and how can I keep it from happening?

Thanks in advance for any enlightenment. I will cross post on some of the
i18n lists.

Re: [Q] How to remove a broken package

2001-02-20 Thread Glenn Becker

Hi,

I had these exact problems with four of the "arphic" font
packages. Finally filed a bug report against them and got a nice response
from the maintainer.

In order for these things to get installed properly you will need to
install the package xutils. Then I'd guess you could remove them,
too. Hope that works for you.

Re: port scare

2001-02-18 Thread Glenn Becker

Hi:

I am down to this with nmap:

Interesting ports on localhost (127.0.0.1):
PortState Protocol Service
22 opentcpssh
111 opentcpsunrpc

I K'd out S10portmap in the /etc/rc0.d/ directory, but port 111 is still
open. I can remove portmap from /etc/init.d/, but how big a concern is
this port? I've got hosts.deny set to repel anything not using ssh.

And is it all right to keep 22 open like that? Apologies for the
rushed questions, I just want a box secure enough to allow me to
continue to experiment without worry. I can look into better
solutions later, like ipchains/firewalls.

port scare

2001-02-18 Thread Glenn Becker

All,

Not long after my last message to the list last night re: open ports, I
was chatting on IRC and got an email message from logcheck re: a system
attack. It appeared from the message that the attack had been
repelled; however, now when I run nmap, I get this:

Interesting ports on localhost (127.0.0.1):
PortState Protocol Service
1 opentcptcpmux
11 opentcpsystat
15 opentcpnetstat

32772 opentcpsometimes-rpc7
32773 opentcpsometimes-rpc9
32774 opentcpsometimes-rpc11

What the hell *are* these things and how did they suddenly blast open
after I had shut down all but three? I have changed nothing - and when I
check inetd.conf and the other directories I edited, they are still the
same. Ex: I commented out finger ages ago ... it's still commented out and
yet now there's an open port.

open ports remaining

2001-02-17 Thread Glenn Becker

All,

I have been trying to secure my Debian box, which enjoys a DSL
connection. I've been going through /etc/inetd.conf, commenting out
services, and K'ing others in the /etc/rc2.d/, until what I have left is
the following (output from nmap):

Interesting ports on localhost (127.0.0.1):
PortState Protocol Service
22 opentcpssh
25 opentcpsmtp
53 opentcpdomain
111 opentcpsunrpc

So, the questions: I have read some about sunrpc in the list archives but
have not found how to close the port; don't know what domain is, and am
confused smtp is still there since I've commented out the line in
inetd.conf ... I have set my hosts.deny to

ALL EXCEPT sshd: ALL

... I guess then port 22 is not a concern?

Thanks for any help with this. Trying (always!) to become a smarter user.

locales - curioser

2001-02-13 Thread Glenn Becker

All,

I'm trying to learn how locales function in a Linux system. Sorry if these
questions are elementary, but I'm having a hard time finding a basic level
document that explains the role of locale definitions.

I tried re-setting locale to what appears, anyway to be the default value,
"C," by running this command from root:

export LC_ALL="C"

The problem: when I then run the locale command in console-only mode, it
correctly displays the new value "C" throughout; however, when I run
locale from an xterm session in a window manager, I get

LANG=zh_TW.Big5
LC_CTYPE="zh_TW.Big5"
LC_NUMERIC="zh_TW.Big5"
LC_TIME="zh_TW.Big5"
LC_COLLATE="zh_TW.Big5"
LC_MONETARY="zh_TW.Big5"
LC_MESSAGES="zh_TW.Big5"
LC_PAPER="zh_TW.Big5"
LC_NAME="zh_TW.Big5"
LC_ADDRESS="zh_TW.Big5"
LC_TELEPHONE="zh_TW.Big5"
LC_MEASUREMENT="zh_TW.Big5"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="zh_TW.Big5"
LC_ALL=zh_TW.Big5

... which is what I was getting before. My question would be: why is this
the case? And how can I reset to default *everywhere*?

oddness with locales

2001-02-12 Thread Glenn Becker

All,

Somehow my locale settings (which I don't really understand the relevance
of, yet) got changed ... I believe through my use of a package in
unstable, the "Debian Chinese Panel." I noticed I was getting a lot of
Perl / locale warnings etc on apt-getting packages, so I started looking
into the issue of locales. The output of the locale command on my system
is as follows:

LANG=zh_TW.Big5
LC_CTYPE="zh_TW.Big5"
LC_NUMERIC="zh_TW.Big5"
LC_TIME="zh_TW.Big5"
LC_COLLATE="zh_TW.Big5"
LC_MONETARY="zh_TW.Big5"
LC_MESSAGES="zh_TW.Big5"
LC_PAPER="zh_TW.Big5"
LC_NAME="zh_TW.Big5"
LC_ADDRESS="zh_TW.Big5"
LC_TELEPHONE="zh_TW.Big5"
LC_MEASUREMENT="zh_TW.Big5"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="zh_TW.Big5"
LC_ALL=zh_TW.Big5

Which is, I guess, a problem. I want to do work with Chinese characters,
but these *all* shouldn't be set thus, I don't think. Is there an easy way
to reset my locale settings?

RE: domain setup & email/DSL:followup

2001-02-09 Thread Glenn Becker

thanks!

i have the numeric ip. it's the rest i guess i need to do.

ok, tho ... look out, here comes another bonehead Q! i swear i remember
being asked to supply the name -- or even domain name -- of my system
when i did the Debian installation/setup. would it have been ok at that
point to have named my machine "joe_bltsflk" or "HAL" or just plain
"localhost" if i had no intention of running a webserver or having "my
own" email address?

perhaps that question can simply be ignored during setup. or can domain
names in that sense be self-assigned - that is if they have no
relevance outside the particular machine? it doesn't sound right ...

i apologize for continuing to rattle at such a low level. it is helping,
believe it or not. thank you!

thanks!

i'm at such a low level with this stuff that i am unclear on what DNS
hosting 'really is.' :-) sometimes i don't know how i do anything ...

and i also find myself wondering about the apache setup i currently have
running (mostly for the sake of future experimentation - i haven't done
anything with it yet)... under the setup you describe, would it have a
non-numeric address for the outside world? it couldn't be www.atomcam.com
because that's the wife's site!

typing in the numeric ip or localhost gets me to the default page fine, of
course. maybe i need to read up on DNS ... :-S

ok,

i'm feeling a bit silly for having mailed the list on this topic ... but i
guess i'd be worse off if i just remained blissfully ignorant, right? :-)

i must risk further embarrassment or learn nothin.'

very simply: if i *choose* a domain name -- glennbecker.net is available,
i find -- and register it, then change the name of my system, that should
solve most of if not all the problems - am i right?

it was in retrospect NOT logical in any way for me to have named this
machine "debian.atomcam.com" since atomcam.com is registered to my wife
and the actual MACHINE(S) hosting that domain are in no way anywhere near
me but are in fact warped.net machines.

someone just tell me whether i'm getting warmer or colder ...

thx

domain setup & email/DSL

2001-02-09 Thread Glenn Becker

All,

I'm wondering if I made an error when I initially set up my
machine.

My wife runs a webcam site at www.atomcam.com. The site is hosted by a
company called warped, and our DSL service is provided by another
company (the whole DSL thing is something I know v. little -- in a
technical sense -- about). We have a cluster of 5 static IPs and I use one
of them, the other four being for the cams, some of which have their own
internal IP addresses.

When I set up my Debian box, I named it debian.atomcam.com, which seemed
logical at the time. I have since changed the numeric IP (we switched DSL
providers when it turned out the former one had NOT BEEN PAYING THEIR
BILLS to Covad ...) but have kept the debian.atomcam.com name.

My networking-totally-ignorant question is: can I just "take" this name
like this and assign it to my machine and "expect" things to
work? Telnetting out (and *in* from outside when I use numeric IP) works
fine, as do surfing, etc. But I have been trying to set up email -- I
supposedly have a POP account with warped, for one -- and having no luck.

I don't expect the list to hold my hand and teach me networking, but if
anyone can point me toward a good set of documents, I'd be
grateful. If nothing else it sort of frightens me that this machine
may be a sitting duck, security wise. And I hate being ignorant! :0)

Thanks,

Glenn

linuxconf/changing IP setup ...

2001-02-08 Thread Glenn Becker

All,

OK, I feel very silly. I believe there was a post to the list on the
subject of changing one's IP post-installation, but I didn't think I'd
need it, so I deleted it.

Anyhoo, we wound up having to change DSL providers, so I got a brand new
IP, subnet mask, default gateway and DNS #s tonight. Unf. I could find
files (/etc/hosts) that cited the IP#, but nothing that referenced the
others.

Someone in the #Debian channel on openprojects.net mentioned the linuxconf
package, which I unf did not have installed. I finally got it installed
(from CD) but it so far has not allowed me to connect out (I'm on the
wife's Mac typing this, how embarassing ...heh).

linuxconf keeps reporting errors after I commit to the changes I make. I
noticed that even after I'd *made* these changes, the IP # in /etc/hosts
was still the *old* one, so something appears not to be happening.

Has anyone else had trouble with this program? Is there an easier way to
re-work my networking setup? Are there a limited # of files I have to edit
and if so, what are they? I'll edit by hand and dump linuxconf. Please
some one send me a copy of that recent post on this subject (I looked but
can't find it in the archives) if it/its followups answer this question. I
DON'T WANT TO REINSTALL my system if I don't have to!

Thanks, apologies for the stressed tone.

Re: i810 in testing

Alvin,

Thx for the info. In short I'm wanting to remove SuSE 6.4 from my work box
and slap Debian on it, since SuSE has come to look ... pretty pale compared
to my Debian setup at home.

I originally moved to SuSE from Slack bec. I was totally inexperienced and
the support for i810 on SuSE was rumored to be pretty complete and
friendly, which it was. I'm still totally inexperienced, but want my
Debian, and the tech folks here are amenable as long as they don't have to
spend time helping me!

RE: i810 in testing

o, god, whew. it's been a BAD day for my brain!

so is the XFree support for i810 fairly seamless in v4? again, it's
more needing to get this done fast bec of work constraints than an
unwillingness to tinker. i'm dealing with a blecched SuSE box that carries
most of the scars of my early days running Linux (e.g. last year).

so ... the xfree86-common package in testing, which is apparently
v. 4.0.2-1, isn't really XFree86 v.4 (or better than?)? the
xserver-xfree86 package shows the same v. number in testing. i'm confused!

i810 in testing

2001-02-07 Thread Glenn Becker

Hi,

I'm strongly considering switching over to Debian at work ... but my
machine here has one of those evilish Intel i810 video jobs ... any
reports of success or failure with this chip and X in testing?

I found a few things in the list archives but they were sort of
inconclusive as far as testing goes. I don't mind fiddling with box, but
here it's time sensitive as I have graphics work to do. So ... fiddlin'
time is at a premium.

Experience tells me getting this hardware to work with older versions of
XFree requires the download and installation of a module by the name of
agpgart.o ... I never had a whole lot of luck with it ...

Thx,

Glenn

Re: Window Manager trouble/Thanks

2001-02-04 Thread Glenn Becker

Problem finally resolved. I think what went wrong was that I did an
apt-get remove on wmaker soon after upgrade, and emptied some of the
directories *by hand* when I saw that they weren't going away (because
not empty).

In retrospect this was a boneheaded thing to do, but it seemed like a good
idea at the time :ox

I finally did a dpkg --purge on wmaker, then reinstalled, which did the
trick. Thanks for the help and patience. Once again I have learned a
bundle.
