  List master,
I hope this gets some where. I am anxious to install
linux on a spare PC. But,
There are many questions. I wento the FAQ to get disk ?'s answered
but only gener-
ated more ?'s that were more difficult to answer.
My hope is to find a generous soul that is a higher level resource
than I, to ask questions
of. I have 20+ years in a Unix environment prior to being retired.
Therefore I look for-
ward to being able to operate and expand the environment I was so
comfortable with.

Is a contact list something that is supported?

My objective is to increase the size of my hard drive to >5MB and
install Debian linux
and W95 on the same system. I noticed Corel is going to release a
complete install and
boot software pkg. before 1/1/2K. My hope is that someone can get me
over the hurdle
with Debian by that approx. time frame.

If someone can respond the following ?'s are those I would ask:
o How can you tell if your system can support an ultra DMA-66 hard
drive?
o Can I install Debian as the primary OS from the release 2.1 CD then
install W95?
Or is another OS presumed to install from that CD?

All responses can be directed to [EMAIL PROTECTED]; thanks
in advance to any

and all respondents.

WHEN i TRY TO MAIL THE DEBIAN-USER MAILING LIST PLEASE FORWARD THIS TO THE
CORRECT LOCATION.
__

First I would just like to thank the people behind the Debian distribution.
I work with software and have been very impressed with the way they have
organized their system distribution updates. to me ( still a "newbie")
dselect is a vital tool worth it's weight in gold!

1.) I installed Debian GNU/ Linux 2.1 using floppy images downloaded from
the internet.
 - My system is Dual pentium 200 Mhz, 3Com 3C905, NE2000 ( linksys-
isa), Diamond Firport HP C310 SCSI-2 , with 96 Meg ram, Acer CD-ROM
 - Install worked great and when I boot up I get eth0 (3Com) and eth1
(ne2000), all modules loaded perfectly no erroneous messages on boot
 - However no SMP support and driver for the 3Com card does not work
correct (messages in /var/log/syslog problems with irq)
 - DHCPD client daemon started ( I want to use a cable modem) no inet
address from ifconfig -a for eth1.

2.) I recompile my kernel using "make-kpkg" and kernel-source-2.0.36
 - make menuconfig
 - make dep
 - make-kpkg clean
 - make-kpkg --revision=smp700 kernel-image
 - make-kpkg --revision=smp700 modules-image
 - cd..
 - dpkg --install kernel-source-2.0.36_smp700_i386.deb
 - here I have to mv /lib/modules/2.0.36 to /lib/modules/2.0.36.old
 - then I get prompted to make a boot floppy since I cannot boot from
my scsi (bios does not see it) I attempt it
 - use your current /etc/lilo.conf? I say yes
 - error testing lilo.confetc
 - re execute dpkg --install kernel-source-2.0.36_smp700_i386.deb
 - create boot floppy and new lilo.conf

3.) When I reboot I lose my eth1 (NE2000) and get multiple messages such as
cannot find module ne.etc
 - SMP works great, no eth1, eth0 works just fine( 3C905), dhcpcd has
problems great (no interface..attached to eth1)
 - If i try to boot off an old floppy (not created by compile) I still
get the same messages but with no SMP support.

I believe something about the way I compiled my kernel is causing me
problems. However I selected "Loaded modules support" and the drivers
required for both ethernet cards. i.e. 3c59x and ne.

What can I do to get both ethernet cards working and all modules loaded at
boot time and still keep my SMP support?

and help is greatly appreciated.Thank You!

Salutations,

I purchased the official debian package and thought that by registering I'd get
the E-Mail address for my free support. Didn't happen. How does this work?

Meanwhile I have two problems:

1. When I use "cu" I get a "pppd permission denied" message. wvdial works fine
to my ISP but to login to Sun I need access to the remote console before I
start ppp. (BTW: This worked flawlessly on Slackware and Caldera)

2. When I run "checkpc" I get a message indicating that /dev/lp0 is not
configured. /dev/lp0 is present with the correct major and minor numbers. What
kind of configure does it mean and how do I do it? Why didn't the package
configure this when I installed it?

thanks,
Julian

you should define slightest :-) Our listserver count the
bounces someone is having at (actually) at the count of 10
he unsubscribes him from the particular list. debian-user
is a high-traffic list and the count of 10 is reached
easily.

well - see above why the low-traffic-lists are going on.
Mostly when we (Joey and me) unsubscribe manually, we get
the person from all the lists. If smartlist does it by
itself, it does it list-per-list. But I won't make the
software less sensitive - there are enough bounces per day
we receive...

I have read heard about problems with bad floppies. The same happend with
the 3rd floppy. I bought a brand new pack of floppies today so I would be
less likely to have a problem ( they are even branded ).

Is this a common problem.

xlockmore and shadow?

1997-06-14 Thread Hanno Wagner
Hi,
I have now upgraded my normal passwd-system to shadow. It
works perfectly - but xlock won't run anymore. It tells me
following:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ xlock
xlock: it looks like you have shadow passwording.
Contact your administrator.

Well... I asked the package maintainer (it is the last
version of xlockmore I am using Version 4.02-1). And I
verified the group and s+bit of xlock:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ ls -l `which xlock`
-rwxr-sr-x 1 root shadow 462824 Apr 25 01:53 /usr/bin/X11/xlock

So, this seems to be fine.
But why doesn't accept it the shadow-passwds?

/etc/passwd and /etc/groups not consistent?

1996-12-05 Thread Hanno Wagner
Hi,
I installed yesterday debian1.1 via NFS on a brand new computer.
I used dselect and tried now dpkg. I installed also postgres95
with dpkg. This was the only program I installed which said that
it would change the /etc/passwd or /etc/group.
Now I installed majordomo-1.94 by hand and discovered, that the
user majordom should have UID 30 and GID 30 (in /etc/passwd), but
the GID changed to 31; on GID 30 was dip. Same was with the user
postgres for postgres95: he should have UID31 and GID 31, but he
had GID 32. This only was in /etc/group, the data in /etc/passwd
linked to the same ID as to UID, so postgres would have had the
group majordomo (well - both uses databases :-)

Any Ideas what went wrong?
