pdflatex problem

1999-02-23 Thread Hans Ehrbar

I can give a partial answer to the pdflatex problem:
pdflatex uses type 1 outline fonts by default, instead of
bitmapped fonts, which is good because it makes the pdf
image crystal clear. Whereas the bitmap font info
exists for every point size, the outline font info
apparently exists only for 5 point, 7 point and 10 point,
and the intervening point size are interpolated. amslatex
has a style file cmmib57 to solve this problem for one of
their fonts, and any other package enabling you to use type
1 fonts should have the same.

BTW, pdftex is still alpha software, and my experience is
that with complex documents pdflatex has been creating pdf
files which the acrobat reader could not read. But for
simple documents it works great.

Will boot from floppy but not from hard disk

1998-05-03 Thread Hans Ehrbar

I installed bo on my old 486, and the installation was
completely smooth, but I can only boot from the floppy, not
from the hard disk. This is the second time that I tried to
install it, in my earlier attempt I could not boot from the
hard disk either. I suspect the problem may be due to the
BIOS settings: a copy is attached here, they are all the
default settings except the setting for the Hard Disk type
47 RAM Area which has to be DOS 1KB according to a remark
buried somewhere in the LILO documentation. Any suggestions
what I should do? Your help is appreciated.

Linux cannot find NE-2000 network card

1998-04-24 Thread Hans Ehrbar

Thanks to Ossama's and Gilbert's advice, I could fix my
problem by adding a line consisting of the string 3c509 to
the /etc/modules file.

Apparently the install program never wrote this string
into the file because I had failed to install a network card
altogether when I originally built the base system. I missed
this step because the menu did not ask me to do it because
it did not auto-detect a network card. When I discovered
after my first boot-up that the network connection was
missing I went back to the install menu, but did not
re-initialize my partitions but mounted the already existing
partitions, and then initialized the network device. Since
it never asked me to re-build the base system I never did.
I had the hardest time reading the floppies and did not want
to go through this again. Apparently the install program
did not discover the inconsistency between the modules I had
currently declared and the modules present in the somewhat
older /etc/modules file. Is this a bug, or am I asking too
much of the install program?

Thank you for your help,

Hans.

Linux cannot find NE-2000 network card

1998-04-24 Thread Hans Ehrbar

Thanks for the quick response, Ossama.

I did configure the network and I do have a file
/etc/init.d/network which has my IPADDR and NETMASK etc.

but I haven't found any files with any of the information
about the network card specified during installation.
Where should it be?

Linux cannot find NE-2000 network card

1998-04-24 Thread Hans Ehrbar

I just got through the ordeal of installing debian linux
from floppies on an older computer, but linux cannot find my
network card. When installing the device drivers, the menu
first told me that I did not have any network cards, i.e.,
there was a - sign in front of the line for my 3C509 card.
After selecting the card and typing in the right address and
interrupt request io=0x300 irq=3 the installation program
seems to have talked to it because it gave me the following
message:

loading device 'eth0'...
eth0: 3c509 at 0x300 tag 1, 10baseT port, address 00 a0 24 e7 06 66, IRQ 3
3c509.c:1.07 6/15/95 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

But when I boot the machine it says: Network is unreachable

What should I do? Thank you for your consideration.
