KDE 2.2 pre-alpha1 test packages available for sid/unstable

2001-04-12 Thread Ivan E. Moore II
Ok folks...

I have prepared a set of test pacakges for the upcomming KDE 2.2-alpha1
release. You can add the following apt line:

deb http://people.debian.org/%7Erkrusty/ kde2.2/$(ARCH)/

you *must* be using Branden's new X4.0.3 packages which you can get from:

deb http://people.debian.org/%7Ebranden/ woody/$(ARCH)/

The new qt packages I built with the new X4.0.3 packages are also in the
above url... Report bugs to the debian-kde@lists.debian.org mailing list
and *NOT* to the Debian BTS.

Again, these are test packages... KDE 2.2-alpha1 has not been released yet and
these do not reflect the final state of 2.2-alpha1. The main purpose of these
packages are to work out packaging issues, allow for other packagers to test
build their packages against the new libs, testers to test the new features,
bug squashers to find and help fix bugs, and for the criminally insane who like
to run pre-alpha software.

There is no guarentee that these will even work...and my response will most
likely be It works for me... :)

Have fun,

Ivan

KDE 2.0 debs for woody

2001-03-13 Thread Ivan E. Moore II
Just to let everyone know.

The current set of Debian packages for KDE 2.0 in woody are not tagged
as Official 2.0. There are still upstream fixes that are continuing to
come through and although I screwed up and taged the changelog as 2.0 it
is not. Official release is scheduled for Monday I believe and I will have
2.0 official debs uploaded by Monday.

I appologize for any confusion I may have caused by this.

Re: KDE 2.0 for potato: no Packages file, no libmng?

2000-10-25 Thread Ivan E. Moore II
I downloaded the new KDE 2.0 packages for potato last night
 from the mirror at sourceforge.net
 http://ftp.sourceforge.net/pub/mirrors/kde/stable/2.0/distribution/deb/Debian/dists/potato.
There are no Packages files there, but I managed to generate some
using dpkg-scanpackages(8). Much to my chagrin, after getting that
working, most of the new KDE 2.0 packages for potato seem to depend
on libmng, which isn't included in the KDE stuff at sourceforge.net.
There's a version for woody, but it depends on a newer version of libc6.

I did not put a Packages file on the KDE mirrors as I don't want people
to rely on them. :) In the past (KDE 1.x) I had a nightmare keeping them
up to date..or just fixing stuff so I (even though they have a new method
for packages to maintain stuff) decided to just convince people to use
the kde.tdyc.com site (and it's mirrors) as the only place to go. Thus
the README which should reside on those KDE mirrors. (it better be there)

and..so...I continue below...

Any suggestions? Perhaps I just need to wait a bit for things
to settle down. Or should I be looking somewhere else? Either way,
I'm happy to help somehow, or be patient if that's all I need to do. :)
 Thanks...

as you can see my first problem with this was the fact that I forgot to
upload libmng. :) I uploaded it later and am not sure if it was updated.

Please use the following apt line to grab your stuff...

deb http://kde.tdyc.com potato kde2

add this to your /etc/apt/sources.list file

deb http://snowcrash.tdyc.com/debian slink rkrusty

deb http://snowcrash.tdyc.com/debian potato rkrusty

depending on your version.

They are still being worked on and fixed up as the ones on ftp.kde.org are
not up to speed and have other issues I won't go into. I am also in the process
of fixing up the debian stuff in the KDE CVS tree itself so soon they will be up
to snuff and everything should be workin the way they should. If your
interested in keeping up to speed on this process, a mailing list has been
created for that purpose. Send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a body of

Currently there are i386 and alpha versions available. (And partial powerpc
versions). Sparc should be coming along soon as well. I have also available
other extra packages such as kpilot, khotkeys and kthememgr. (tho kthememgr is
HUGE!).

hahahahha...

it's called Welcome to UNSTABLE hahaha

no...kidding aside...personally I would never recommend to anyone to
try a installation of an unstable release this early in it's development.
Those installation programs are first off probably just the slink ones in
sheeps clothings and no telling if the are the newest versions of those.
Most likely they are not even being worked on (if not ignored) at this
point in time because everyone is trying to get SLINK done and out the door.

now..I have not personally looked at the potato installation stuff. I always
go from a stable or frozen version and upgrade up using apt-get to get to
the unstable stuff. I find it safer...I could be wrong and someone is actually
working on those install disks for potato..

shoot...slink's installation isn't quite there either last I checked.

I'd just go with a slink and upgrade.

Quoting [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

Downloaded new potato disks and installed it via ftp.
After deselcting all wanted packages all seems to be all right.
After installation and configuration i am not abel to reboot the machine
because some essential progams are deleted by dselect.
 E.g. reboot, sulogin, shutdown etc.

 What`s this ?

as for blocking it, there are new features in upcoming kernel releases...
(2.2) and I think there are some in the current version..(don't remember) that

as for finding out where it's coming from...that depends on what type of

are some debian packages that allow for loging all traffic that touches your

courtney : checks for satan probes...(seems to do more than that though).

Re: upgrading to slink

1998-12-02 Thread Ivan E. Moore II
I have written a page for how to upgrade from HAMM to SLINK. It goes from a
stock non apt-get HAMM distro to installing apt-get to upgrading to SLINK.

It's located at http://www.tdyc.com/archive/slinkup.html/index.html

I wrote it for a friend who kept asking me how to do the upgrade and he never
remembered what I told him. This stoped the questions. :)

I have successfully upgraded to SLINK 7 seperate machines with no problems
(except when problems arise in the actual distro which usually get fixed within
24-48 hours).

This document should help you...if not answer any questions you might have about

upgrading to SLINK.

upgrade distribution. For example, I might install a newer gimp from
 slink.
Since I wouldn't have upgraded the base packages, I learned that using
dpkg prematurely can cause little problems.
Upgrading from rex to bo: I EVENTUALLY HAD TO REINSTALL FROM SCRATCH.
Upgrading from bo to hamm: I EVENTUALLY HAD TO REINSTALL FROM SCRATCH.

Upgrading from hamm to slink: WHAT CAN I EXPECT.
With no instructions, I certainly will not use raw dpkg to add packages
from slink to my current hamm distribution --
unless of course dependencies prevent this (do they now?).

pine.deb package

1998-12-02 Thread Ivan E. Moore II
you can download the newest Pine deb packages from the experimental directory on
any mirror site

/debian/project/experimental

There are 3 files you need.

pine_4.05-0.diff.gz
pine_4.05-0.dsc
pine_4.05.orig.tar.gz

you then run

dpkg-source -x pine_4.05-0.dsc

then cd pine-4.05
debian/rules binary

this will build your pine and pico deb's

then you can dpkg -i the pine and pico deb's...

due to licensing issues, debian cannot re-distribute modified binarys of
pine..so they distribute the diff's along with the original source...leaving it
up to the end user to compile it.

as for your apache problem...

go into /etc/apache and edit your httpd.conf file

in there there is a servername option...the problem you might have is that the
servername seems to want to be dns-able...so if you don't have a static ip
address...you'll want to add a line in your /etc/hosts for the name of your
server.

Hope this helps

Ivan

The next version will have the NeoMagic card support.

For now..go to:

http://www.precisioninsight.com

they are the ppl who developed the xserver for that card set. works great
as I am using it right on.

When will X windows come up with drivers for NeoMagic 2160 chipset. I can't
seem to get X Server to run fine without it being a zoomed in version for X.
 Weird.

Re: Notebook for Debian

1998-11-14 Thread Ivan E. Moore II
I dunno about all that, my work gave us nice Dell Latitude CPi's with NT
on them...the only problem with them was solved by nuking NT and
installing Debian. Works like a champ with slight slink hacking and kernel
modifications...

Hm, my toshiba 445cdx (p-133, 16 mb ram, 2 mb vram, sb, 1 gb disk, cd drive,
floppy, 2 pcmcia) cost about $1100, and works great with the normal svga X
server. It could use more memory, otherwise I'm happy with it - and I'm very
happy with the price. The toshiba's in general seem to be well supported
under linux, there's even some of addon utility stuff for them in debian
 like toshiba-hotkey and toshiba-fan.

varesearch seems kind of spendy... Any other linux specific ones?

Of course, if you think VA is only kinda spendy, you can probably afford
something better than my humble laptop. ;-)
