While I had not read it at the time, I believe that I have done everything mentioned and had successfully done about 6 sarge to etch upgrades prior to this one (although none of those machines had sound cards). Update! - I don't know exactly what I did last night, but today when I reboot it, it is working. One thing was to delete all the files in /etc left over from sarge that were not present on a fresh install: modprobe.conf, modprobe.devfs, and modutils.
