Continuous brute force attempt from own server !!!
Dear list, I'm suffering with a very serious issue and seek guidance. I have a debian server functional at my place which is attached with a leased line connection. Iand I use this box as a gateway. This debian box administer a remote opensuse linux server through this debian box and I use pubkey auth mechanism to log into the remote linux server. At the remote linux server, I can found huge brute force ssh attempt at the different port and surprisingly the attempt is made with the same username which I actually use to llog into the remote box. Some of the messages from log are as below ``` accepted public key from username_of_my_local_box from WAN_IP_of_my_local_box port 50574 ssh2 ``` The attack is random with a serially increment at port number. If I bloack the ssh connection limit through firewall at the remote box, It actually blocks me to log into in further. Could any one suggest what is happening in my local box ? rootkit ? local box compromising ? What is it ? Please suggest. If I need my hwclock to UTC then what should be the right way to do that ? I have followed dpkg-reconfigure tzdata and found it has changed the local time to UTC too. Confused . The problem is that the hardware clock doesn't store a timezone, so when it reports the time as 10:32, is that 10:32 in your current time zone, or 10:32 in a standardized time zone (i.e. UTC) or... Which you choose doesn't really make much difference, so long as all OSes that update the hwclock agree on what it's set to. You can agree to keep it in UTC-5 if you like, even if that's NOT your local time zone, just so long as you tell your system to apply the correct offset when reading/writing it. The main issue comes when you're dual-booting with Windows. By default, that assumes the hwclock reads local time. If Linux thinks it should be UTC, then you're going to see odd time jumps as you switch between them. Hope that clarifies things. Thanks for the points. This box doesn't have any window system. So please advise how can I set hwclock and localtime. Thanks -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? After mounting using sshfs and encfs, attach strace to the encfs process (run strace -p encfs-pid -o ~/encfs.log -f), and try to create a single file in the sshfs mountpoint (presumably this fails). Then detach the strace (C-c in that shell), and examine encfs.log for permission errors (EPERM). If you do not understand the log, reply back with a link to the log. Errors were encountered while processing: skype Any link to download the 4.0 version ? If you are running 64-bit, you will need to install some 32-bit libraries. The issue many people are having with Skype on Debian is the multiarch transition. I think Skype/Microsoft has made changes with 4.1 that address some multiarch issues while creating others. If this is the case , 4.0 may not want to install properly, either. I already have the required 32 bit libraries ( apt-get install lib32asound2 ia32-libs ia32-libs-gtk) and never faced any issue with 4.0 Are you running Squeeze, Wheezy, or sid? Wheezy 64 bit Try this: #dpkg --add-architectecture i386 #apt-get update Then try installing 4.1 package again. As I said, you may need to add some 32-bit libraries. How to enlarge LUKS partition ?
Dear list, Is there anyone who is successful increasing LUKS partition ? I have 2 physical partitions /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2. There is 800 GB free disk space (un-partitioned) between sda1 sda2 Whole /dev/sda2 is dedicated to a LUKS partition which holds a LVM. I have tried with gparted to increase /dev/sda2 but there is no support to increase luks. How can I increase sda2, so that I can later execute cryptsetup resize ? Thanks Hi, I resized LUKS containers on several occasions, without lvm on top but it shouldn't be much more difficult. I usually operate from a live-cd, any will do as long as there is cryptsetup/lvm/whatever-filesystem-you-use support, or that you can install it. on the way of encrypting a system, need some help please
Dear list, I have bought a new HDD. Created 2 partitions. An un-encrypted 1 GB /boot as a separate partition on the Disk. And on the rest (2nd partition) an encrypted LVM with root and home as two logical volume on it. Now I like to migrate my running system, the running / to the root of logical volume, but /boot ( which is actually a folder in my running system) should go to the unencrypted /boot of the new disk. and the running /home to the home of logical volume. So that I can get my running system on the new encrypted disk and can boot from there. Obviously I need to modify /etc/fstab and /boot/grub/grub.cfg on the logical volume. How can I proceed ?
