xfree86 4.x and unstable
I have had to use unstable distribution as a couple of programs I need to run require lots of versions only available in unstable. now I have upgraded and all seems okay apart from my Xserver (took several apt-get update/upgrades to get all dependencies working correctly), but X doesn't work I run XF86Setup and it all configures fine run Xvidtune all okay save n exit and then try and run x and get a file not found error? Now I don't expect anyone to answer my question on how to get my x back up and running key by key (but it would be nice) but I looked at the xfree86 org website and they have not done a configuration help file yet does anyone know of a good place to start for newbie documentation on setting up the 4.x Xserver? cheers Dean <> This message has been checked for all known viruses, by Star Internet, delivered through the MessageLabs Virus Control Centre. backing up and rebuilding the kernel
Right I have just spent the last 3 evenings building a debian server (much to my fiancés disgust) it has 2 hard drives a 2gb and a 18gb all the system files are mounted on the 2 gb(sda1) /home is mounted on the 18gb(sdb2) (swap is sda1) what is the easiest way to back up the system files (2gb sda1) to a single file on the 18gb/home (so it can be backed up onto a tape drive one day) and also if I need to restore what is the best way? a bulk restore would be required to get the system back to how it is now/when I last backed it up I need to do this as I am a constant fiddler and newbie so I cock up regularly and do not know how to undo what ive done sometimes. and the next task involve a kernel re-build to enable dual processor support (smb) and im scared just thinking about it so any advice here would be nice. all I want to do is add smb can I do this without deleting anything I already have?(newbie not sure exactly what ive got but it works!) Internet connection sharing with cable modem
Right here's the scenario. cable modem with dhcp allocated ip int ne t card connected to this 2nd int net card connected to local LAN using-static ip machines on local LAN can send ping's to external ip addresses problem-- machines in local LAN cannot browse internet (unable to resolve dns) my dns servers are 194.168.4.100 and 1942.168.8.100 (as provided by isp) im sure I have installed everything correctly and put dns settings in the correct places on the local machines but obviously I haven't on the Linux box question is there a document that shows how to set this sort of thing up properly, what files on the Linux box do I have to modify? anyone got any idea what I have missed? I have read many how-to documents and seem to have done everything previously the dns enteries were incorrect here they were correct on my machine but still no joy?
