Dist-upgrade woes
Hi all. I was running woody originally before it became testing and decided to do a fresh install. Upon realizing that testing didn't include many packages I enjoyed having I tried a dist-upgrade to sid. Here's my problem. I remember reading about problems with the new perl upgrade and how it breaks (broke) packages. I thought this was old news, but I guess it is not. All weekend I have tried different combinations of dist-upgrades, from potato -- sid, from potato -- testing -- to sid, and heck, I even tried progeny. Anyway, I've attached my errors I logged when doing a upgrade of task-x-window-system. I should explain that I started with a base potato install, did a dist-upgrade to unstable, and then an apt-get install task-x-window system. Is there a quick fix to these errors, or will I eventually be able to fix this with an apt-get upgrade? Thanks for your help every (any) one.. JP Reading Package Lists... Building Dependency Tree... Kernel 2.4.0-test12
Hi all.. Just curious if there is something different with the latest test kernel? I was running test10 and decided to try out test12 with a fresh potato - woody install. I've compiled many kernels, but this latest time I have run into a little snag. Seems my modules do not work. I have done a make modules make modules_install and they are installed for sure, but my new modules.dep is empty (i.e 0 bytes), and I can't modprobe any of my modules.. every time I do I get something like module XXX.o not found. I've followed the same procedure as with every kernel, and this one is a mystery to me. I have everything set to yes in the Loadable Modules support section, and I even tried with kernel module loader off to see if that would do anything... So, anyone have any suggestions? I'm stumped.. Thanks.. JP
Re: Mail not configured. Best mail program?
I did an apt-get upgrade today.. it upgraded sylpheed so I think it's on the regular US sites now.. if not I'll send the deb to you.. Re: Framebuffer Console ???
# VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x64k vga=791 Is there any way to do this in Debian 2.2? The Debian lilo objects to the 791 value. --- Yup.. but you need to recompile your kernel and under console drivers select yes for Support for frame buffer devices and VESA VGA graphics console.. you should be able to get a frame buffer.. everything else you need I think should be selected by default. Hope that works... JP
Writing scripts and online support
Hi all.. this isn't debian specific, but I'll ask this of you because only smart people use debian.. right? :) Anyhow, I want to learn how to do basic scripts to perform tasks, as well as getting to learn cron and similar daemons.. aside from going out and buying a few perl books (which I intend to someday) are there any good online sources for basic script writing? I ask this because I need to write basic scripts for renaming a number of files and to perform tasks which I will be going often.. For instance, I would like to rename some wav files to 01.wav, 02.wav etc. and renaming 01-A_Wav.wav and 02-Another_Wav.wav to 01.wav and 02.wav seems tedious. I know a simple script file could do this. Anyhow, I know there must be a decent resource list for script writing, and am curious what people suggest are the best places to look. Thanks guys! JP
Kernel compile error
Hi guys.. I got a strange error when attempting to recompile my kernel today. I was able to compile it yesterday, so I'm not sure why it is choking today. Anyhow, here's the output: /usr/src/kernel-source-2.2.17/include/linux/kernel_stat.h:47: for each function it appears in.) make[2]: *** [ksyms.o] Error 1 make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/kernel-source-2.2.17/kernel' make[1]: *** [first_rule] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/kernel-source-2.2.17/kernel' make: *** [_dir_kernel] Error 2 Any ideas what I'm missing? Could it be something I selected in the config? Thanks for any help you can provide. JP
Re: Problems with the Desktop-Icons under GNOME
Hi Jon: Just a thought, but when you logout from Gnome, it should give you the option of saving your desktop. When you do that and log back in, it should have saved all your icons where you left them. Correct me if I'm wrong. JP On 21 Aug 2000, Jon wrote: Hi all, I have a Problem with my Desktop-Icons. kde.tdyc.com
Just curious if anyone knows what the story is with kde.tdyc.com? It's been down for a few weeks now, and it's the only place I know for kde debs. Anyone have a clue? Thanks. JP
