Re: Debian GNU/Linux Guide to installation and usage
Hi: I think the safest way is to install from FDs. Fro teh files you asked, check the section 5.2 in the installation manual at this address: http://www.debian.org/releases/slink/i386/install After you installed, learn how to use "deselect". It's a very convenient package-management tool. You can then install desried Debain packages from the net. Jack From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: debian-user@lists.debian.org Subject: Debian GNU/Linux Guide to installation and usage Date: Thu, 2 Sep 1999 03:53:31 EDT I recently purchased this book, being interested in the Debian distro, and would like to install it on a computer that cannot boot from the cdrom. I read through the book until I got to chapter 2, page 20, where it gives directions on how to make a bootup floppy from the included cd with which to install Debian. However, the procedures outlined include accessing directories and files which were not on the disc. Specifically, there is no subdirectory "DISK-I386" of d:\dists\slink\main. In order to make the bootup floppies i need, it seems i need 3 files: rawrite2.(exe, i assume), resc1440.bin, and drv1440.bin. Where can I find these on the internet, or if they aren't available on the internet, can someone send them to me by email? [LILO] how to boot a second IDE HD?
Hi: Currently, I'm running linux well on my first IDE HD, but the problem comes when I try to use lilo booting the second IDE HD. Please give me some advices. Thanks :) Oh, by teh way, the first IDE HD (/dev/hda) is the master drive on first IDE controller. The second IDE HD (/dev/hdd) is the slave drive on second IDE controller. I've tried to modify /etc/lilo.conf to boot the DOS on /dev/hdd3, but it fails. The error message appearing at the booting time is the following: boot: DOS LOADING DOS ERROR: 0x01 LOADING Linux The following is my /etc/lilo.conf : boot=/dev/hda1 install=/boot/boot.b map=/boot/map linear prompt timeout=100 image=/vmlinuz label=Linux root=/dev/hda1 read-only vga=normal other=/dev/hdd3 loader=/boot/chain.b label=DOS table=/dev/hdd The following is my partition table of the second IDE HD: /dev/hdd11 1088 514048+ 83 Linux native /dev/hdd2 1089 122966622+ 82 Linux swap /dev/hdd3 * 1025 4050 1429785e Win95 FAT16 (LBA) /dev/hdd4 405110602 3095820f Win95 Extended (LBA) /dev/hdd5 4051 6239 1034271c Win95 FAT32 (LBA) /dev/hdd6 6240 8428 1034271c Win95 FAT32 (LBA) /dev/hdd7 842910600 1026238+ 83 Linux native Thanks so much for help :) Jack __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
[SQL] a newbie's question on language syntax
Hi: Thanks for reading my problem. I got MySQL installed a while ago. My problem is how to display database(or table) content with proper syntax of SQL language. The following is a quote from the interactive mode of MySQL, under which I've tried several commands. The database I was working on is named "mysql", but the prompt of the interactive mode is also called mysql: mysql->select * ->SELECT * ->select * from mysql ->SELECT * FROM mysql My purpose was just to look at the content of the database, "mysql". There showed nothing, no matter how I tried using "select" or "show". BTW, I'm just wondering does commands have to be small latters or big letters? Re: Multi-Boot Problem
Hi Jean-Yves: I'm so imporessed by your "Lilo Jump" :)) Can you tell me more details about how you do it? For example: 1. How do you install lilo into /dev/hda1 and /dev/hda5 at the same time? 2. Where do you put the configuration file for the lilo of /dev/hda5? 3. Can you attach your configuration files for lilos in your replying letter? Re: Multi-Boot-Loader
Hi: Currently, I'm tryign to install Oracle8 SQL Server, Linux version. In the "Detailed Installation Instructions" prividered, in Chapter 2, section "Tasks to Perform as the root User", it asks to configure LINUX kernel Interprocess Communication (IPC) parameters. It then says the default setting is recorded in the file "initsid.ora". But I couldn't find this file anywhere in the installation package. I'm wondering if it's possible to find it somewhere? Multi-Boot Problem
Hi: I'm currently using Debian on /de/hda1, which is 2G. Also, I have MSDOS on /dev/hda2. I"m just wondering how can I use lilo to boot /dev/hda2? I can't solve the problem because I find /dev/hda2 is out of the 1024 cylinder area. I tried to use "linear" option in /etc/lilo.conf , but it doesn't solve the problem. I'm wondering do you know how we need linear address rather than CHS address? I've attached my /etc/lilo.conf in teh attachment. Re: netscape installation help..
I think you've probably forgotten to install certain X library packages, before installing Netscape. I use dselect to install Netscape, so it reminds me "required" packages nicely. Hope this gives you hints to solve your problem. If you have problem using dselect, ask again. :) By the way, it would be greatly helpful if next time you can give the problem more details. Problem with LILO
Hi: I have Debian on /dev/hda1, and Window95 on /dev/hda5. My /dev/hda1 is 2G, therefore lilo doesn't allow me to boot /dev/hda5 for the 1024 cylinder problem. By the way, I try to keep /dev/hda1 as the active partition. What can I do to boot /dev/hda5? Also, after reading the lilo documentation, I still don't understand why we need "linear" option. I'm just wondering why do we need linear addressing than CHS addressing. Thanks for your help. :) Jack __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
