Greetings Matt:

I am sorry to jump into this late since I didn't see your original post,
*but* I just did an install here on my laptop that had Win-xp on it.

I looked at Gnu/Parted and Randish(sp) for partition resize tools, but
neither looked promising for the NTFS type. I decided on Partition Magic 7
which did the job.

Next, I did a base install and booted. That is when the error occurred
locally, and the hard drive wouldn't boot *anything*. After I booted off my
Woody-cd1 (in rescue mode), my brother found that when I used cfdisk, I had
made both win-xp & Linux partitions bootable. He simply toggled the boot
switch on the Linux partition, wrote the data, and suddenly I was able to
boot into Lilo from the hard drive.

If you made the same mistake as me, then perhaps this might help you solve
your problem.

Then if you press CAPS LOCK, the caps lock LED comes on? This is usually the
sane test to determine if your cpu is locked. Yet you confuse me by telling
me "it takes 20 minutes, sometimes five. . ."

> I do have the feeling that it happens usually when I am also accessing

Right, my laptop has died many times as I configured it over this weekend,
sometimes the DISK LED would stay on, sometimes it wouldn't. In each case,
however, the CAPS LED would night turn on, nor could I get pings back from it.

Good idea to start there. My box was crashing as it started run level 2,
right at the very end. What confused me was that my screen would have white
lines in it as if X was trying to start. Turned out to be pcmcia trying to
run, and that is completely unrelated to X! :) Syslog is what I used to get
an idea of where/when/where, and why. Another trick I use with syslog is a
command 'tail -f /var/log/syslog &', this pops every event to your console as
it happends and runs in the background so you can still use the console.

I have never had good luck with VESA. The last box I used it on would end up
with weird memory errors from out of nowhere. Memtest86 reported the memory
was perfect. This *could* be part of your problem.

The last suggestion is running top. Keep a top window open and see if there
is a program going crazy and swamping the cpu. I have read many times of
programs taking all the cpu for no apparent reason.

I think this question might get more response on debian-laptop!

I am *trying* to configure my Gateway solo 1200 for apm. At this piont, I
don't even have a clue if the little dude uses apm or acpi!

I ran a test on the box with 'setiathome' and it became very hot. It would

Amateur radio operators (hams) run into this often. It is critical to tend
to all NiCD, NiMH, and Li-ion batteries monthly. If you drain (discharge) a
battery, let it fully cool, then get it on a charger without delay. I make
it a point to rotate all my batteries to keep them both fully charged and in
good condition with intended use loads.

Letting a battery stand too long (<30 days) will always discharge the
battery. The least prone to this effect is the typical non-rechargeable
alkaline batteries. Car batteries, RV deep cycle batteries, and of course
laptop batteries do need charged whether you use them or not. Prolonged
negligence will always damage them, after a while, the damage is too much and
many newer chargers won't even try to charge them (that's when the little red
light starts blinking on the laptop). Also over discharging a battery can
cause polarity reversal, this is caustic to the remaining cells in the pack.

Further, if you have the newer Li-ion type batteries, don't interrupt a
charging cycle. No, they will no longer explode, but they will begin to
degrade. When it's time to charge it, make sure it is fully charged without
interrupting your charging source power.

If you really want to attempt a salvage, then you will need to learn how the
cells are packed and where each lead goes. I would definitely determine if
you have reversed cells, if so, will, good luck.

Greetings Suraj:

You don't specify what xfree version you are running, so I will assume you
have Woody's x4.1. During the setup (using debconfig) it clearly asks
whether your monitor is LCD or not. This *could* be part of your problem. I
would suggest taking another look at it with: (as root)
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

That will start a the configuration program to help you get it all
working, plus it will automatically modify your XF86Config-4 file. You can
run it again and again until you find the right combination to make x work as
you want it too.

hth, good luck

I am not sure what you want/need. I just installed 'wordinspect' to do word
lookups. I am running into many rarely used words, and this handy little
utility is now iconized and sits on my taskbar. Just click on it, paste the
words, hit ok, in about a seconds, a new screen opens up with a complete
definition.

wordinspect uses the dict client.

What would be absolutely awesome is having a pluggin for my browsers and
editors that could be a right click option!

It is a pluggin that will need installing. apt-get install xmms-cdread

*router* is a linux computer, or something like a Linksys or Cisco router?

In my case, my LAN is up 24/7. I have an old P75 functioning as
router/gateway. I simply ssh to my router, then ssh to my desktop machine.

Another way I have done it is forwarding ports. I picked a high port number
that is transparently routed directly to my desktop machine.

Either way, you can easily configure this with ipmasq tools.

Greetings Rafael:

I was just testing different cups drivers for my HP 560c printer. I have a
desktop and a laptop. My desktop driver was S L O W to print. When I set up
my laptop, I picked another driver for this and was amazed at how fast it
was. I decided I would try some of the other drivers that I had available on
the desktop. At least one of those drivers would produce no output at all to
the printer. The print job was not sitting in queue and was reported
completed.

That *may* be the problem with your setup .. If there are other
drivers (maybe more generic?) then try one and see if it works.

It doesn't matter if anyone has, it is not recommended. "Store in *cool, dry

There are a few posters that have had *enough* and you can tell. Ever walk
into a busy federal or state office and meet someone who has dealt with the
very same issue you will confront them with for the 10^6 time? It happens,
people get snappy, it happens. Still, if you really want to solve your
issue, you grin and deal with it.

I have been on this list for about 5 years, and I don't think I have ever
seen one instance of "Fuck Off." I have heard many people advise others to
go away, but never actually as blunt or blatant as that.

I hope you do stick around. This is a great list and there are also some
great posters! You sound like a Debian natural already. Welcome home!

The reply of "don't let the door smack your butt" is generally reserved for
individuals that clearly are out for vengeance while in a persuit of anger
venting. I don't want to confront a redfaced moronic maniac either.

I hope your install is smooth and the system purrs just the way you want it
to! If it doesn't, I'll (and others will) still be happy to help if I (we)
can via the list.

Greetings William:

I think you can do this. IIRC, I did this on my gateway when I was still
attempting to get DHCP to actually work with my ISP via cable. The best way
is to RTM on whichever DHCP client you are currently using.

The client I used then was dhcpcd about two years ago. I don't know what is
natively installed with a Woody install, but you should be able to learn it
with: dpkg -l dhcp, then read the documentation that comes with that
package.

If you didn't make a rescue disk, use any of the debian install CD's ..
Doesn't matter if it is Woody or Potato. At the prompt type:
rescue root=/dev/hda2 where hda2 is the ROOT of the file system.

Also, here is a quick link to making kernels step by step that I use every
time I build a kernel:

David:

Please take another look at the link I sent you earlier (linux.doc) and note
what you need to do with your /lib/modules/2.x.x when installing a new
kernel. When you build a kernel, you need to move the old modules (or delete
them) so that you can install the new kernel and its modules. I think that
might be the problem now.

Also, two things to note is that you can list any modules that are loaded
with the 'lsmod'. Do this to verify the modules aren't already loaded. Next
thing to know is that you need to add your user to the audio group. Look at
the file "group" in /etc: 'less /etc/group', the audio group is what you
want to give yourself permission to use, so you can add yourself to that
group with:
'adduser foobar audio' as root of course.

I don't use sndconfig if I build my own kernels. I only use this when I have
the default kernel (and all its modules) installed after a new Debian
install. Since you already know what module you need, simply use 'modconf'
to load it in after your new kernel is installed. If modconf fails, then you
have to dig a little further to see what you might have done. Again, 'lsmod'
is the tool you want to use to *see* what modules are already loaded.

Greetings:

I have been following the thread with interest. I decided to do a test my
LAN here while my bride was playing a game on her computer. I started a ping
- -f session on her box with my Linux laptop, then started another one from my
Linux desktop box. I didn't realize it would hamper her computer, but the
computer actually stopped responding to her simple Mahjongg game! Her box is
a 550MHz AMD k6 with 256Mb of RAM. It really seems odd. I can do the same
thing to the old Linux gateway/firewall p75 with 32Mb RAM without any
noticeable slow down.

Guess it's time to try it on a win-xp box. . . .

I wonder if you have it mounted? If so, you must umount the drive before the

Greetings Alex:

I also had the same problem. I first used lprng, then switched over to CUPS.
Both printed *really well* but very slowly. My bride could send over one of
her print jobs from win98 and it would print very quickly. I didn't see any
option unit recently when I installed a full stable Woody on my laptop. When
I added the printer, I had over 5 drivers to choose from for my old hp-560c!
The one I picked printed as fast as winX but only in black/white. The next
one printed almost as fast as winX but in full color--eureka! I did a quick
search and loaded more CUPS drivers with apt-get, then modified my printer
config to use that driver. Much improvement for an impatient hippie :)

The advice is check for optional drivers (gimp-print etc) and add them all,
then see if you can find one that will really drive your printer well.

IMO, the thing you did wrong was not installing cups. I think it has to be
the most user-friendly way to get a printer up and running on any distro of
Linux. The driver base is huge and the ability to configure drivers on the
fly is awesome. I migrated from Lprng to cups on this box, and I just
completed a new install of Woody with cups on my laptop. Both run perfectly.

gl to you

I think you are probably on the right track. Did this happen when you tried
to run this program while the harddrive was mounted? Either use the cdrom or
use toms root boot disk. I don't use xfs, so this is just my speculation.

best of luck to you.

You can use lpd if cups doesn't satisty your needs. Simply backup your
current config files and save them somewhere safe.

As far as installing cups, here is what I have installed on my desktop:
ii cupsomatic-ppd 0.20010420-4 cups printer ppd's from LinuxPrinting.org
ii cupsys 1.1.14-3 Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - server
ii cupsys-bsd 1.1.14-3 Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - BSD comman
ii cupsys-client 1.1.14-3 Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - client pro
ii cupsys-driver- 4.2.0-4gimp-print printer driver for CUPS
ii cupsys-pstoras 1.1.14-3 Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - pstoraster
ii kdelibs3-cups 2.2.2-13.woody KDE print system (CUPS support)
ii libcupsys2 1.1.14-3 Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - libs
ii libqtcups2 2.0-4 Qt interface library for CUPS
ii qtcups 2.0-4 Qt front-end for CUPS.

For finding (and installing) these programs, you might use dselect and search
for cups packages (/cups). An alternative is 'apt-cache search cups' for
locating packages you will want or need, then apt-get install. Once you have
the basic cups package installed, adding a printer is as easy as opening a
web browser and typing:
localhost:631 (enter)
I think it is even easier then the M$ way. :)

Great sig .. I completely concur ^

Iorac:

What do you have in your /etc/network/interfaces file? Look at it and also
read the man page on interfaces. Here's a paste of part of mine:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

This should give you a good start.

Every time I try, the connection is closed. From any other box behind the
LAN I can connect just fine. From any other box outside the LAN I can
connect just fine. From this box that sits right next to the gateway, I am
refused!

I have checked my hosts.allow/deny files and I am simply stumped. Why would
my gateway refuse only this one box? Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

My LAN systems are all Debian Woody and a single win98 box. Gateway also
Woody w/2.4.18 kernel and stable Proftpd.

Daniel:

1. dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86is the command to reconfigure your
xserver the Debian way (as root).

2. According to http://xfree86.org/current/Status30.html#30
"4.2.1:
Support (accelerated) for the SiS 530, 620, 6326 is provided by the "sis"
driver. The 630, 300, and 540 are also supported, but this code is new and
there are some problems with it in this version."

This MAY mean that you might need to use the frame buffer mode.

Daniel:

Were you attempting an x loggin as root? That might not be a good idea, and
it also might not work depending on your security setup.

Were you attempting to log in as user? Then take a look at the file in this
user home file called .xsession-errors for any details related to the kde
failure.

Off the top of my head, it might be a missing lib or component for kde. The
errors should help you track it down.

In my case, I start with blackbox and IceWM first. Once these two super
light weight GUI's are installed, I then install kde. If kde breaks, I
always have a solid desktop GUI to fall back on. It is also helpful when I
am doing a lot of *stuff* to use blackbox to free up extra hardware resources.

Congrats on the xfree setup. You're half way there! :)

Greetings Emil:

I did the same thing locally. During install, I setup the eth0 as static and
proceeded with the install. Next, I changed my /etc/network/interfaces
to look like this:
# interfaces file
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
# The first network card - this entry was created during the Debian
#installation
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
#end of interfaces file

This *should* have caused the computer to get a new IP at boot time, but it
didn't. I don't know which client is installed at install time, but the box
would only gain an IP if I manually invoked it. Finally, I manually purged
all dhcp-clients and installed the stable pump. Once installed, it worked
perfectly at boot. My advice is to manually check to verify that pump is
already installed, if not, fetch it or install it first.

The commands to start/stop your network are:
/etc/init.d/networking {start|stop|reload|restart}
In your case, I would do: '/etc/init.d/networking stop'
Edit the interfaces file then: '/etc/init.d/networking start'
That should fetch your new IP (or old IP).

The resolve file will be updated with nameservers during the DHCP for an IP
since that is part of the DHCP protocol.

Greetings:

I was going to reply to your prior post, but I read the rest of the thread
first. Anyway, with the limited speed of your box, you might want to try
both of them, but it is *very* likely you will like something like Blackbox,
Fluxbox, or IceWM. These last three will reduce the sluggishness of your
computer in graphical mode. I am really pleased with both IceWM and Blackbox
myself. So much so that I have IceWM default on both this box and my laptop.

I really like Kde as well. It has a lot of features (aka bloat) that I
enjoy. I kind of shun away from Gnome, but that is just silly seizure-like
moments of flashbacks to my installs of Red Hat 6.2-7.3 :)

Now also know that you can add any of these as your "default" GUI if you use
Gdm or Kdm (these both come with Gnome/Kde). In my case, after I start x, I
see IceWM. From Ice, I can start any other GUI. Debian makes it very easy
to choose these on the fly.

Bottom line: If you have the room on the harddisk, then install them all!
Try them all out, then remove any of them that you don't like.

Greetings Bijan:

That is *one* way to do it. I stopped doing the non-Debian way two years ago
after battling some of my manual installs.

My point is that I believe there is a documented Debian way to use
source code to build a full .deb file so that the user has the power of
dpkg/apt to add/remove it (the package, doc, config etc) later. In fact, I
wouldn't be surprised if there was a mini how-to for this. Food for thought.

Reading your post makes me want to learn about it just so I could actually
install mplayer and supporting libs for a top of the line player.

Before the boot of the computer, you *should* be able to access the systems
CMOS/BIOS (usually F2 or DEL key, Read your manual how to access yours).
Once inside the settings, you will find the TREND/away *feature*. Simply
toggle this setting to OFF or DISABLE. Save the settings and boot without
ever seeing that silly message every again :) It may take you a while to
figure out how to navigate around so be careful.

Good for you. It is great to have previous experience. Now it's Debian's
turn at bat..

The other guide that is important is the Debian install guide:
http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/installmanual
Do take the time to read it and then begin your quest a bit more enlightened.
This is the place to start. Next, it's time to jump in the water and start
splashing.

I hear some poor remarks about Running Linux, but I really liked it myself.
I found a few tricks I never knew by reading debian-user. The books are
really kind of nice because you get good exposure to other distro's. I think
this can also be the books downfall. Stick with debian-user, the doc's that
will be installed on your computer at install time, and of course the man
pages. Also, http://www.linuxdoc.org/ has great how-to reference.

The support from debian-user is my primary backup when I find I am clueless.
I also read up on lwn.net for security and new stuff I might need but didn't
yet know I wanted :)

I added USB to my 2.4.18 kernel not long ago to support an unsupported web
cam. When I say unsupported, I mean really unsupported by the manufacture!
They don't even support M$ users. A fellow M$ user gave it to me when he
couldn't get it to work on his box. shrug, it worked for me here :)

gl Mark, I think you really have a great grip on it all by what you have

Greetings Martin:

Personally, I also find your quest a bit alarming. Having said that, I also
think it is quite amusing. One must understand that if you succeed in
building this xbox cluster, it will be a hallmark! This will either make you
famous, or infamous, or both!

I just sold an old laptop for US$25. It was a 486/20MHz with broken pcmcia
and M$win3.11. The person wanted it to copy files from another old computer.
Why do I mention this? This person could have bought my other laptop that
had cdrom, floppy, much bigger hd, pcmcia and was 6x faster, but he wanted to
play with old software for the pure sake of playing with old software. That
was the point really, it was there and he was willing.

I also agree with your conceptual argument: cheap cheap cheap. I have never
played with an xbox because of its origin, but I think it's great that you
are in a land where you *can* do this. That is a basic freedom we somehow
started to loose not so long ago here. .

That's about it Martin. If you get your grant, your xboxes, and Linux
installed and working, you will be well known :) heehee.

Good question. Also, I know next to
nothing about USB, the only reason I made it work now is to see if that silly

Good point Alex. Funny thing is that I *think* that this, in itself, is
illegal (US). The proviso is that any company selling goods for less than
cost is undermining the market unfairly. . Fair, what the hell has fair got
to do with market anyway . . .

Thanks Edward. This now brings me to this problem:

j2re1.3 installed ; install (was: install). Optional
j2re1.3 depends on j2se-common (>> 1)

Googling isn't helping much either! Is this package supported? I came up
with this apt line:
deb ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/linux/devel/lang/java/blackdown.org/debian
woody non-free
(without the linebreak of course). Do I need to add additional apt lines for
other parts of this java?

Sto

Greetings Michael:

Good points. If you hadn't mentioned it here, I would not likely have given
much thought to the situation. Seems like there must be some non-amateur GPS
software out there. I would even look into possible GPS/Amateur radio apps.
I doubt you need the radio side, but perhaps the GPS side could be worth
while.

Then again, how open are maps? I have only tinkered lightly with GPS's and
data ports to run APRS mobile. Must see about getting a cheap GPS one of
these days :) Pass along what you learn, this could turn into something very
interesting.

Similar thing just happened to me not long ago with an essay I was working
on. Openoffice.org just wacked my system for no apparent reason.
Frustration isn't a good enough word in my opinion! The crashes still sound
like an alarming situation. Since the system crashed on both Mandrake and
Redhat, I would think there must be some kind of connection.

One thing that popped into my mind reading this paragraph is the ext3
filesystem. I have converted all my boxes to ext3 and it is wonderful! This
desktop computer doesn't die no matter what horrible things I subject it to.
My laptop on the other hand has locked up a number of times. It is nice not
having to endure the endless fsck's! It is very easy to convert your ext2 to
ext3 if you are interested (providing you didn't install it at install time).

No worries Chip. I see a few of these types of messages every now and again
on debian-user, and they are always a pleasure to read.

I am evaluating Mandrake 9.0 and Libranet 2.0 right now. I have old hardware
and a fried harddrive, so it is not the kindest box to play with. Libranet
(Debian based) installed after four harddisk time-outs that resulted in
system crashes. It is amazing how well that little distro runs on this
broken hardware! Mandrake never made it past the partitioning. The monitor
would blank right after trying to do a normal install or low-res install,
which left only a text install as the only option. So far, I'm not too
impressed with Mandrake .. Heehee. I hope to find another (not so dead)
harddisk to try it again with. Still, Libranet, with apt-get, was able to
endure the repeated crashes and still produce a working system--that's the
power of Debian I think!
