HP 7100e CD-RW
I am interested in getting an external parallel port CD-R drive. The cheapest one I can find (don't care too much about performance) is the HP 7100e CD-RW drive. Is this compatible with Linux? Are there any drivers I need to get it to work? _ DO YOU YAHOO!? Get your free @yahoo.com address at http://mail.yahoo.com -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Using Linux in a Corporate Environment - Any Developers?
SUMMARY: Has anyone created a business app in Linux/XWin (with something like Tcl/Tk)? Read on for details. Hi, my name is Jeff Alami; I am from Vancouver, Canada. At my workplace we are considering upgrading our current systems and software (mainly because we don't like the outsourced programmer). Allow me to brief you in our current implementation: - Main server: 486 DX/2-50, 16 MB RAM, Equinox Megaport 8CS multiport board. - Terminals: 5 text-based VT100 terminals connected to multiport board. - Software: SCO UNIX 3.2, Universal Business BASIC, code created for Business BASIC. We have two options; I like the first one better. I also calculated the approximate cost: (1) Linux implementation -- approx. cost: US $3000 (if X-terminals are bought used) excl. development - Main server: K6-233, 64 MB RAM, 6.4 GB HD, Network card, 8-port hub - Terminals: 4 or 5 X-terminals - Software: Debian Linux, XFree86, development environment such as Tcl/Tk (2) Wintel crap -- approx. cost: US $15,000 - Main server: same as (1) - Lots more computers - Software: WinNT, Borland Delphi 3 to develop interface, Oracle8. Now, I would love to do implementation (1); it will keep Microsoft off my back for a long time. The only thing about (1) is that I need to find someone who can develop (or has developed) a Linux/X Window application, possibly in Tcl/Tk or C, that does business operations, such as order entry, inventory control, general ledger, and so on. Thanks for all the help! I wish I am able to stay with Linux; it's a world-class OS. Re: Using Debian Linux for Dumb Terminals
Well, I recently found out that the Equinox Megaport 8CS is not a dumb UART board--not supported by Linux. If you're looking for a multiport serial board with support for Linux, you have two recommended options. If the computer you connect it to is fast, and you want to save money, you can get a Boca BB-2008 for about US $199 (8 ports). If your processor is low on power, you can get a Cyclades Cyclom-Y board with 8 ports for about US $600. Check out their Web sites at http://www.bocaresearch.com and http://www.cyclades.com. Hope this helps. Jeff ---Lindsay Allen [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Jeff, I have been following the thread. My school (the one I'm the Tech for) could use an 8 port card but $$$ are in short supply. Have you got any pointers to not-so-expensive cards? The idea here is to have several modems for dial-in use. Dumb terminals are not a problem for Linux or any other variety of Unix. Linux supports a number of multiport serial cards. I'm using a Cyclades 8-port card at the moment. If you want to know whether your particular card is supported, let me know via personal e-mail, and I'll check. Thank you for the good news! That means I won't have to pay for the upgrade to System VI :-). I don't know the make and model of the card right now--I'll have to have a look. All you really need to know is the name of the device. On the Cyclades card, it's /dev/ttyC0..ttyC7 in the case of my 8-port card. A standard serial port would be /dev/ttyS0 (equivalent to COM1: in DOS). Add an entry to /etc/inittab for each terminal device, run init q, and you're basically done. Depending on what card you have and how the terminals are wired up, you may have to deal with issues like hardware flow control. The getty man page can help with that. In general it shouldn't be a problem to run terminals without hardware flow control. What kind of terminals are you using, by the way? I assume you have something standard like a VT100 clone. Thanks for the information! So I know I can get Linux working. They are actually just simple VT100 clones, made by Data General a million years ago. We used to connect them to a Data General minicomputer system running VMS and TransSoft Business BASIC. We are currently using SCO UNIX because it also has TransSoft Business BASIC; but now that there are Business BASIC interpreters for Linux, I don't need SCO anymore. I am also having a look at the Serial-HOWTO; I didn't know it was so easy! Jeff Alami [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Re: Matrox Millenium II again
I have a Matrox Millenium II PCI with 4 MB WRAM. One of the best resource for information on how to upgrade and configure XFree86 for the Millenium II is the Web site for the XFree86 Matrox Team at http://matrox.alloy.net. I got it working with the Matrox Team's download and installation instructions. - Jeff Alami Guardian Consulting Services Senior Consultant 3911 Fraser St. E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]Vancouver, BC V5V 4E5 Web: www.gcs.bc.ca Canada - ---Antti Arola [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hello Debian-users, I have installed Debian Linux 1.3.1 (from InfoMagic CD-set dated Aug 97). Next I would like to have XFree86 running, but with my Matrox Millenium II I have faced some problems (I have Nokia 447Xpro terminal with line frequency range from 30 to 96 kHz and refresh frequency range from 50 to 150 Hz). I have made extensive search for help through newsgroups and several Linux links. It seems that in this mailing list there have been discussions about Millenium II as well. But it seems to me that there are various ways to deal with this problem and as a new Linux user I am a bit confused. XSuSE servers have been mentioned, on the other hand somebody says that only latest version of XFree86 is needed from XFree86 ftp site (they should have experimental version that supports Millenium II). I have tried XSuSE-server. I strictly followed the instructions in their web-page under Installation of the XSuSE-X-Server, ie. I downloaded the relevant *.tgz files (both the server and xf86config) and untarred them as instructed. Then I run xf86config. If I then run XF86Setup, while selecting card I get an error message. Matrox Millenium II is on the list, but apparently cannot be selected. I would be extremely happy if somebody could write down short step by step instructions for the XFree86 installation with Matrox Millenium II, either with XSuSE-server or some other valid way. _ DO YOU YAHOO!? Estimated Release Date for Debian 2.0
I would like to know if there is a preliminary release date for Debian 2.0. Some of my hardware is not easily supported yet (e.g. Matrox Millenium II) in the Debian 1.3.1 CD, so I'd like to be able to get it soon. Thank you. XFree86 SVGA server has a problem...
I've had quite a few problems using XFree86 on my Debian installation. I have a K6-233 with 64MB SDRAM and a Matrox Millenium II video card. I was told to upgrade XFree86 to 3.3.1 to get Millenium II support. After that, X was working fine, but would only load the VGA16 server; I wanted better resolution. So I was told to edit my /etc/X11/Xserver file to put SVGA where VGA16 was. Then I loaded X and the server would load, quit back to text mode, and I would see errors like 'X server error: you do not have permission to load this server. I tried changing it back to VGA16, to no avail. What's going on? -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Trouble? e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] .
X11 Installation
I have a few problems installing X11 on my Debian system; it seems that the video will not work. I have a Matrox Millenium-II card (w/ 4MB WRAM) and a 15 NEC MultiSync 4FG monitor. I looked up compatibility problems and I have seen that the Matrox Millenium-II is not compatible with XFree86, even if the Millenium and Mystique are. I tried using Unsupported VGA card and Standard VGA monitor; the tests of the X server work fine, but when I load xdm, the computer freezes. Can anyone help? Thanks.
