Anyone else experienced something like that? I've tried to manually set
the time via gnome settings but nothing happened.

The following should sync and set your hardware clock:

sudo apt-get install rdate
sudo rdate -s timeserver.example.com hwclock --systohc

timeserver.example.com of course should be replaced with an address of a
working time server.

32 bits is likely to play more video codecs than 64 bits, by virtue of
the w64codecs package lacking a bit. And to the best of my knowledge
just because you can run 32 bits binaries on a 64 bits kernel doesn't
mean w32codecs will actually work. I keep an older 32 bits system around
just because of that.

http://debian-multimedia.org/dists/stable/non-free/binary-i386/package/w32codecs.php

Of course this isn't debian's fault, but the fault those companies which
create closed and proprietary software.

Besides the bottleneck with a file server normally is not CPU

Sounds like you have some power manager that's configured to put the

it. Try to access its power management configuration editor and turn off
anything that makes it sleep after a certain time.

In gnome it's called power management in the

Actually if you use the laptop for a lot of streaming media it may be
worthwhile to install 32 bits debian. This is because the some of 64
bits codecs don't work very well whereas the 32 bits ones work fine.

It's one of the reasons I keep a 32 bits x86 system around and I have
yet to find a satisfying solution.

I am refering to packages such as:

apt-cache policy w64codecs
w64codecs:
  Installed: 1:20071007-0.5
  Candidate: 1:20071007-0.5

500 http://www.debian-multimedia.org/ squeeze/non-free amd64
Packages

100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

So it's not part of debian proper I guess.

Ahem, don't you mean Jeroen? Sorry, couldn't resist.

Yeah me, thanks. :-)

Thing is, normally I see little to no spam from a mailing list. That's
because they're managed in such a way spam hasn't got a chance of
getting through.

The other thing is, it's not so much about me as an individual filtering
the spam. It's that since the spam was sent to the list the damage
already has been done and all the subscribers got it, for example that's
a 100 or 1000 times more bandwidth wasted than if it was sent to me
personally. That's one of the reasons why careful and proper abuse
management and prevention is rather important especially for mailing lists.

Spam sent to mailing lists shouldn't be filtered at the receiving side,
the subscriber, but at the sending side, the mailing list software.
Hence my original question if this list was forgotten by its maintainer(s).

I apologise for furthering the spammer's thread.

I'd be greatly indebted if someone could answer the original question I
posted about gnome stock items, or point me in the right direction.

I question the wisdom of that decision. There are ways to, on the one

The impact of a single spam email reaching a mailing list has a bigger

Upgrade to squeeze some menu stock items disappeared

2011-05-09 Thread Jeroen van Aart
After I upgraded from lenny to squeeze applets as well as the default
gnome menus in the panel don't show (some) stock items anymore. I am
talking about things suchs as
http://developer.gnome.org/gtk/2.24/gtk-Stock-Items.html#GTK-STOCK-REFRESH:CAPS

This actually also appears to happen with a vanilla squeeze install.

I have been unable to find much information as to why this happens
neither do I know exactly which package is at fault so I haven't filed a
bug about it.

I have tried various things such as using different icon themes and
change the appearance preferences, even changing the source code of an
applet I wrote myself. Neither helps much or at all, but I am able to
get an icon in the lock to panel menu item with some appearance/icon
theme configurations. Which seems a bit odd since I normally never see
an icon for that particular menu item.

Any ideas on how I can fix this or where can I find more information?
Is this a problem with upstream gnome?

Thanks,
Jeroen
