should not resolv.conf and gw point to the address of the router? I would set up the interface on the desktop manually just to test the connection. You can enter the DNS provided by the ISP into resolv.conf or use the router as the DNS. I was trying to install wpa on a Dell inspiron 6000 and connect to a Linksys WRT55AG and am now confused. I first updated the firmware on the router and now have ´wpa personal´ as an option. Second, enabled the wireless security, selected wpa personal, and entered a passphrase. Third, ran wpa_passphrase on the box, giving the essid and same passphrase as on the router. Fourth, edited interfacs and wpa_supplicant.conf with the appropriate information; using key supplied by wpa_passphrase. Tried ifup eth1 and the command just hung.

If you have a hostname accessable from the outside, you can even use it to communicate with other Jabber users on other servers, like LiveJournal, Google, et. al. I strongly recommend looking into it. As far as a client goes, it's really hard to beat Psi, which is in Debian, and available for MacOS and Windows as well. Alternatively you can enable the Spanish keyboard set. Since I go back and forth between English and Spanish, but mostly English, I prefer the US-Intl approach. I have a US type keyboard and the Spanish keyboard set remaps many keys to different characters than those on the keys themselves, which makes it sometimes a pain to find a character unless you are either use to it or buy a different keyboard.

Permissions: another question
Our machines have a user defined for each family member and a group called family. If I create a file in a directory for which I have defined family as the group, other users cannot access the file because it is not created with family as a group. So I must manually set the group for each file. Every files and dirs will inherit the group.

So, here is what I found: Etch installer, all except expert24, will try to load a floppy module when searching for network hardware. Expert24 will present two options, a network module and the floppy module. With dhcp and with setting up the network parameters manually, the system fails to contact a mirror. The other installers will complete the install but expert24 will fail to install grub. I am currently using kubuntu and want to test the etch dist. My board is a K8M Neo-V from MSI. I downloaded the netinst iso. The install process fails to setup the mobo LAN card. I disabled the internal LAN and installed a Linksys card with same results. On both occasions I tried a manual configuration with the setting that work for the kubuntu install. I purchased a Nikon D50 this past December. We have been very happy with the unit unit. The camera was recognized by kde and debian. I also modified some scripts available on the net for the D70 to automate some of the chores, such as downloads and conversion to jpg. Actually I had misdiagnosed. I had an error in the keys file, missing double quotes. icewm apparently reads key assignments and stops if it encounters an error; hence some work and some did not. Why the debian list? I guess because the machine I first noticed it on, a laptop, is running debian, and so is my server, and a second box. These are recent installs and I have been lurking around the debian list seeking answers to some questions. The machine from which I wrote the e-mail is running Mandriva, but debian is what I have been thinking for the last three weeks. And, I will add, good distro as well as a good list. I am having problems configuring the keys in icewm. The box is running Mandriva. I downloaded and compiled the most recent icewm. The problem is that some of the keys I configure do not work. F1 and F2 are ok F3 and on are not. Although I was running linux-image-2.6.15-1-686 v.2.6.15-8, the module directory I was using was from linux-image-2.6.15-1-686 v.2.6.15-2. Once I moved the module directory and reinstalled the kernal package WEP began working fine. Make complains of missing kernel files in /lib/modules.../build. I have an Ubuntu install. The install does not include the kernel sources or headers, 2.6.12-10, but when I try to do apt-get, apt-get returns packages not found. I cannot find 2.6.12-10 in debian or Ubuntu mirrors.
