Re: Debian And IBM MCA Bus
greetings, i beg to differ on debian's support of the mca bus i have an ibm ps/2 70 and installed debian 2.1 on it w/no problem the only thing was applying a patch to support the network card...but other than that there was absolutely no problems. jd?
Re: PS/2 router with MCA nic
i have recently obtained a ps/2 - 70 with an mca smc-tcp mc nic and initially could not get the kernel to properly recognize the nic but that was because i needed to apply a patch to one of the standard nic drivers...i just found the patch yesterday but have not tried to apply it but along the way in search for info i did see that there were a number of patches for different nics around, so that may be one thing you should try to do...is look around for a patch if none of the standard drivers work. Have patience also because there is a great deal of outdated material concerning linux and the mca bus ;) otherwise...there were no problems with using the mca busits just another bus. regards, jd? Re: X server on a Compaq Presario 1235
for the neomagic cards on compaq presarios(i have the 1680) you can now use the svga serverget it from the unstable tree or get it from xfree86.org..there will be no new neomagic-xserver i think because the hardware specs were released to the xfree86 people so they incorporated it into the svga server. here is my xf86config file for reference. regards, jd? ps sorry if it gets mangled . ;) == Section "Files"RgbPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/"FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled"FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled"FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/"FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/"FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/"FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/"#ModulePath "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules"EndSection#Section "Module"#Load "xf86Jstk.so"#EndSectionSection "ServerFlags"#NoTrapSignals# DontZap#DontZoom#DisableVidModeExtension# AllowNonLocalXvidtune#DisableModInDev# AllowNonLocalModInDevEndSectionSection "Keyboard"Protocol "Standard" AutoRepeat 500 5XkbDisableXkbKeymap "xfree86(us)"EndSectionSection "Pointer"#Protocol"Microsoft"# Device "/dev/ttyS0"Protocol"PS/2"Device "/dev/psaux" Emulate3ButtonsEmulate3Timeout50EndSectionSection "Monitor" Identifier "Generic Multisync"VendorName "Unknown"ModelName "Unknown"HorizSync 30-64VertRefresh 50-100# 640x480 @ 60 Hz, 31.5 kHz hsyncModeline "640x480" 25.175 640 664 760 800 480 491 493 525# 800x600 @ 60 Hz, 37.8 kHz hsyncModeline "800x600" 40 800 840 968 1056 600 601 605 628 +hsync +vsync# 1024x768 @ 60 Hz, 48.4 kHz hsyncModeline "1024x768"651024 1032 1176 1344 768 771 777 806 -hsync -vsyncEndSectionSection "Device"Identifier "NeoMagic"#Chipset "NM2160"#IOBase 0xfea0#MemBase 0xfd00VideoRam 2048#DacSpeed 90#Option "linear"# Option "nolinear"#Option "sw_cursor"#Option "hw_cursor"# Option "no_accel"#Option "intern_disp"#Option "extern_disp"#Option"mmio"#Option "no_mmio"# Option "lcd_center"#Option "no_stretch"EndSectionSection "Screen" Driver "svga"Device "NeoMagic"Monitor "Generic Multisync"Subsection "Display"Depth 24Modes "800x600" "640x480"virtual 1024 768 EndSubsectionSubsection "Display"Depth 16Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"virtual 1024 768EndSubsectionSubsection "Display" Depth 8Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" virtual 1024 768EndSubsectionEndSection

Install on compaq presario 1680
Greetings all, I'm trying to install debian and X(if possible) on a compaq 1680 presario laptopi downloaded the newest hamm disksand because of the way all of the software came on one "quik-restore " cd...i had to use fips to create a partition for debian. I left the partition unformated so that i may create the swap and linux partion through the install procedure. I get o that point in the install...and for some reason it cannot read the disk geometry..because "Opened disk read-only - you have no permission to write"next fatal error on fdisk and it kicks me back to the hamm installation menu! Now i just need help in reading the disk geometry and partitioning the disk so that i may install.i remember trying a bo installation before and not having any problems...i may try the old bo rescue disk...just to try and partition...and hope that the hamm install...will be able to see the partition when i resume hamm installation. Does anyone have any ideas on why this may happen or on a possible work-around? Will X work on this laptop (neo magic vid card) and if so what server to use? Video card recommendations...
Greetings all, Currently i'm building a machine and am down to the last piece of hardware, the video card. i was wondering if anyone could shed some light on the pro's/con's of the following cards: ATI all-in-wonder Diamond Viper Matrox Millenium II just a few words about any problems experienced with any of the cards and/or problems with thier features would be helpful(e.g. Has anyone captured video with the All-in-wonder?). Re: Stealth II S220
Greetings, This card is not currently supported by debian, to my knowledge. Partially, i would assume because it is so nes and Rendition, which makes the controller, just recently released the white-papers to the xfree86 project so that they may start development on the x-server for it. So... i would assume that there is currently a server being developed for it. In the meantimei'm contacting the xfree86 project to see how its coming along. Currently i'm only running in text mode. If you hear anything new please do let me know, and in return i'll do the same. Regards, jd? On Fri, 13 Mar 1998, M.C. Proper X Server...
Greetings, i have recently purchased a Diamond Stealth II S220. i was wondering what x-server to use. I've tried a few from the debian site but to no avail. Problems w/ppp dialup & Kerberos
Greetings all, OK, the ongoing saga of my ppp dialup continues. pon now attempts the connection(my modem is now recognized!). It dials and then thats it. We use Kerberos Authen so i do not know if this is causing the problem. The logs show that after the handshake the host(my school) asks for 4 returns for interactive mode which i'm familiar with from dialing in with ckermit(a dummy term). Should ppp take care of that? Dialing up....
Greeting all. First off this list has been hella helpful in getting my debian box up and running. Gimp is wonderful. Ok now on to my last "Real" project. I need to get a ppp dialup connection up and running. I was trying to start off with using my modem to connect, at least a dummy connection(using kermit), but my modem is not responding to ckermit. I have an atlas 33.6 modem that responds (in win95) at comm 1. This, the ppp dialup connection, is the last piece i need to move to a debian system only..i can't wait. Any help with this is greatly appreciated. If need be, anyone who is willing to help me out can email me directly(as not to waste any bandwidth).
