Help
Hi, I am running potato with 2.2.13 kernel. I screw up perl. So perl 5.004 is broken and cannot be removed. dpkg-preconfig is a perl script, so my upgrade failed. I try to the following command dpkg --purge perl-5.004 apt-get -f install It seems that apt-get depends on perl, and i cannot clean up perl 5.004 and perl 5.005 cannot be installed. Even I try to use dselect to remove perl-5.004, some error happened and perl-5.004 is still there. Any help will be appreciated! Jianbo
Re: Help(solved)
Hi, I use dpkg -i perl-5.005-base_5.005.03-5.2_i386 to overwrite the old one, and it works. Jianbo
sb 16
Hi, I have a soundblaster 16 card, when I choose soundblaster compatible module for it, the module is for soundblaster pro (8 bit only 3.01), not for soundblaster 16. My card chip is CT8920. In my message log, it said SB DSP version is just 3.01 which mean that your card is several years old. My card IRQ is assigned to 7 by isapnp, II change it to 5, but it still refused to work. Any suggestion? Thanks! Jianbo
SRS 3D AZT2320
Hi, I have a SRS 3d sound card (assembled for Packard bell), and the chip is AZT2320. When I use AZT2320 compatible driver in win98 and win NT, the sound card works (it's automatically detected as AZT2320 in win98). But When I use OSS (open sound system) driver, my chip is detected as AZT3000 which is not supported. Then I configure the soundcard as Wojciech did ( published in Feb 98), my card is still identified as AZT3000, no matter whether I use PnP BIOS or non-PnP BIOS, isapnp cannot dectect my card as AZT2320. It said AZT2320 not found, skipping... What can I do next? Thanks! Jianbo
vmware
Hi, Does anybody know where I can find demo license for vmware? Thanks! Jianbo
Re: Mouse problem
Hi, You can try the following: 1. go to prompt mode (test mode) by xdm stop 2. use XF86Setup to set the port and protocol for your mouse. 3. start xwin, the mouse should work. If not, you can check two files, /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config, and /etc/gpm.conf, make sure the port and protocol are set correctly. Before any check, make sure your kernel support the mouse type. mouse
Hi, I am using potato with kernel 2.2.12. After I change my mouse (ps2), I cannot use it. There is a cross fixed in the center of the screen. Even I change the XF86Config by XF86Setup, it still don't work. When I installed debian, there was program to configure the mouse. I don't know what's the command to configure the mouse. Any help will be appreciated. Happy halloween! Jianbo
Re: X problems
Hi, You can edit your xf86config to get high resolution. When I try to use configuration software, it always set to default resolution. If you are satisfied with a certain configuration, you can copy the xf86config to your disk for your furture use. I use the same xf86config file for debian and redhat, and it works fine. Jianbo
A lot of questions
Hi, I have a lot of question: 1. Network for kernel 2.2.6: I have compiled kernel 2.2.6, and I configure it to support ppp and slip, but when I restart it, there is no ppp version 2.2.0... or slip 0.8.4 . And I cannot connect to ISP now. I guess it's a bug in 2.2.6 or my ppp and slip is out of date. 2. When I change mode of *.pl (perl), I can excute it in unix, but I cannot excute it in linux, I must use 'perl *.pl' to excute it. I don't know if I need configure something. 3 I don't want to excute xdm at the boot. When I check my /etc/X11/config, it said no-start-xdm. I don't know how to boot to text start. I have installed hamm, and upgrade to slink. After I upgrade to slink, my debian start xdm at boot time. Any help will be appreciated! Jianbo
Re: A lot of questions

Re: Where is telnet, ftp?
1. After upgrading, I cannot find the program telnet. Previously it was in netstd, but the contents of netstd package do not show telnet (found using dpkg -L netstd). Which package has this program? I am also not able telnet in to the system. But rlogin works bothways. I have the same problem. After I download telnet deb package and reinstall telnet, it works.
upgrade to slink
Hi, I have a hamm CD. After install hamm, I upgrade kernel to 2.0.36. I heard people said they upgrade from hamm to slink or potato, I wonder except the kernel, what else I need upgrade. The upgrade note said some packages are split into several smaller ones. It seems there are a lot of things to do since slink has over 2000 packages while hamm has 1500 ones. Would anyone please tell me what's the easiest way to upgrade to slink? Thanks! Jianbo
network interface
Hi, When I played with redhat, it has netcfg to create and config a network interface, does anyone know if there is a software in debian to do the same thing? Or how can I create a network interface and activate it? Thanks! Jianbo
