it is too bad they failed in half a year. should not save a few bucks

I heard about it but never used before, I only used menuconfig.
does that mean my .config would always work for newer kernels?

I think I'll dig on make oldconfig.

Thanks!

Actually I don't :) I haven't got the chance to look through the long
changelogs..

my other concern using the 3.** kernel is my .config for the kernel,
probbaly it doesn't work for 3.** kernel because of new kernel
parameters or parameter changes..

squeeze stock kernel is a little bit too old for me
because I run some pretty new hardware like i7-2600k, etc. but using
something like 3.** which introduces features I don't need sounds like
not a good idea for my setup.

Thank you for the pointer, I'll check the debian source.

where to get patched older kernel for example 2.6.39

2011-12-05 Thread Jim Green
Hello community:
I use debian squeeze running 2.6.38.8-4. usually I download kernel
source tree from kernel.org and strip stuff I don't need and compile
my own kernel. but there is a problem, I think the older kernel such
as 2.6.38 are not being patched on kernel.org. lets say there was a
bug fix on 3.0.0 on some old feature, this patch is likely not patched
to 2.6.38.

Could anyone advise where I can find such older but patched source
trees I can compile my self? I don't want go bleeding edge 3.**
kernels I just want a relatively old but patched kernel.

Thank you.
Jim.

Btw, will be using e1000e module for this nic.

I settled down on this(building deb packages for squeeze from CPAN)..
not the easiest but I would say pretty clean.

Looking at this, I think I am better off disabling the realtec nic and
use intel® 82579 Gigabit LAN controller on the board instead.

single cable dual nic?

2011-04-24 Thread Jim Green
Hi:
I have a asus p8p67 deluxe board and it has two nics and two ports, I
am thinking of bonding them to one nic, but I only have one cable so
will only use one port. Will this do much help to the
throughput/speed? If I have two cables connecting to both ports I
think it will definitely help, but here I only be using one cable/one
port and two nics bonded to one virtual nic.

Thanks!
Jim.

sysctl vs kernel .config

2011-04-23 Thread Jim Green
Hello debianers:
today i successfully compiled 2.38.4 kernel using make-kmkg and fixed
the hibernate can't resume issue for kernel 2.38-2, got a couple
questions here:

first is run time and the latter is compile time, but what is the
difference here, is one of the other's subset? do their parameters
overlap? which is the preferred file to change? changing .config
requires a recompile.

Thanks!

best practice to use newer cpan modules on squeeze

2011-04-19 Thread Jim Green
Hello!
in squeeze most perl modules are not up-to-date. for example libmoose-perl.

In this case I include the sid repo and attempt to upgrade to sid
version of libmoose but a hell of dependency begins. I am afraid if
insist on upgrading this module, lots of perl core module/perl would be
upgraded in sid.

what should be the best practice here right now? I use cpan command to
install some modules that are not available in debian. but how about
those not up-to-date ones?

Thanks!

Re: raid10 and lvm problem on new lenny install

2011-03-19 Thread Jim Green
Thank you for the excellent explanation!

http://www.gagme.com/greg/linux/raid-lvm.php
from this link I read

"The maximum number of physical extents is approximately 65k so take
your maximum volume size and divide it by 65k then round it to the
next nice round number. "

looks like I already have

 Total PE 953799

this is bigger than 65k,

does anyone know the current maximum number PE in debian lenny?

Units = cylinders of 8 * 512 = 4096 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 524288 bytes / 2097152 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x

this is what I have from pvdisplay
  --- Physical volume ---
  PV Name /dev/md1
  VG Name 2600k
PV Size 3.64 TiB / not usable 0
  Allocatable yes
  PE Size 4.00 MiB

  Free PE 831052
  Allocated PE 122747
  PV UUID WUpkTR-xyCK-HGOc-Hk7Q-OfBp-Mqsz-GubCy7

I don't know why I only have a 3.64T pv size, it should be 4T I think,
in the installation of lenny i use ext3 for all the partitions,
also I set the unused space for each partition as 1%.

Thank you if you have an explanation or if you have ways to reclaim
the 0.36 T from my arrays.

sorry for the confusion. the size of data I _plan_ to use is on the
4T level so 8T is needed.. and that's why I really need a desktop right
now.

Thanks! also lets say I am building a quad/hex core desktop box for
computing. I'd like listen to ur advice about cpu and motherboard, I am not
partial to intel but I do prefer a quiet and debian friendly box that
can hold 4x2T data can simulate things relatively fast.

2T drive is not that more expensive than 1T drive also, I use mysql
database to store relatively high frequency price data and other data.
Initially I plan to buy the WD green drives:( I guess the performance
hit is for all >2T drives?

This is nice and affordable but it doesn't provide much computing

desktop with i7-2600k core(need to wait till the motherboard for it is
fixed).

Hello:
I think I'll probably do this,

4x2T drive in desktop and use a external closure for backup(because I
am using mirroring, disk failure should be ok though). and I'll be
using soft raid to avoid hardware raid card.

Thank you both!

Jim.

question about storage

2011-02-18 Thread Jim Green
Hello!
I have a laptop with 120G harddrive, 2x320G external harddrive, I
don't have a desktop.

Now I am doing something serious storing some huge historical data to
mysql database and want to have some better storage solution(I hate
the two external harddrives I bought 4 years ago, need to power them
on individually and connect with laptop each time I need to use data
in them).

I have two options
1, buy a desktop with 4x2T harddrives and use lvm on raid1, I need the
redundancy of data.

2, buy some independent storage like NAS, buy another desktop with
small harddrive to access the NAS, debian installed on NAS and desktop
of course.

what do you think would be a better solution for me? I like the NAS
idea that storage is independent so I can keep the NAS even if I
upgrade my desktops, but the con is I need to buy separate NAS..

Thank you!
Jim.

system beep after upgrade to squeeze

Hello:
I upgraded from lenny to squeeze, overall it was ok, but I still
couldn't silence the system beep..

I already have
blacklist pcspkr

in

 /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

this used to work in lenny, but stopped working in squeeze,

thanks for any help!
