Some module missing...?

1998-02-24 Thread Joakim Burman
Hi, debian users

When I try to use pppd, the program is halted. 'In "TOP" I see "insmod
-k" at the top displaying that /sbin/insmod -k consumes 90 % of CPU-time
searching a modul (probably some PPP-modul). How do I solve this
problem. I have to first "Ctrl+C" and then kill the above running.

Is there a inbound "ppp-modul" in Debian 1.3-kernel?

Thanks,

Joakim

Autologin..not wanted..

1998-02-18 Thread Joakim Burman
Hi debian-users,

I have some problem after I by a mistake downgraded ldso 1.9.x-->1.8.x
The hole system breaked and I was forced to do a new installation with the
rescue-floppy. I leaved the old filesystem unchanged and installed the
base-system and made a boot-floppy. Then after reboot, when I was prompted
for a "root-password", it did not seem to work. I was not passed to the
system, I was just prompted for a password so I had to reboot by
"ctrl+alt+del". Now I am "autologged-in" as root!!? And since then I´ve bin
automaticly logged-in as "root"!

When I do "/usr/sbin/pppd" I get "/etc/ppp/ppp-connect ;permission denied"
in /etc/ppp/connect-errors!. I have set ppp-connect to chmod 600 and chown
root.root.

Has this something to do with "the autologg-in"? I don´t have a valued
root-account?

Furthermore: When I do the "more" command I get a "Broken pipe" error..

Do I have to reinstall the hole system from scratch?

thanks
/Joakim

Questions...

1998-02-17 Thread Joakim Burman
Hi Debian users,

Some "Newbie" questions...

Is... Debian 1.3=stable=bo?
Is... Debian 1.3.x=unstable=hamm?
Can I run unstable packages on a bo-kernel?
Can I run stable packages on a hamm-kernel? (e.g backward-compatible)

Thanks...

/Joakim

Installproblem Xfree86.

1998-02-09 Thread Joakim Burman
Hello Debian-users!

Can someone help me with some "Newbie" questions..

1. When I try to install Xfree86 whith gzip I got (I think) an errormessage
like "Broken Pipe". What does that mean?
2. How do you run "shell script"? In Howto:s for Xfree86 they say you want
to run the shellscript preinst.sh first of all but I don«t now how to do
that.
3. It don«t seems that I have the manual-klient "man". What packagename is
that "manual-klient"?
When I try to run with "startx" as root the message I get is:

"xinit: Can«t load library «/lib/libc.so.4« Incompatible version."

In my /lib/ I only have libc.so.5
What«s wrong?

Many thanks
