xf86 3.0, i845, no go

2003-09-06 Thread Joe Paxton
I am using the vesa driver of XFree86 3.0 from experimental with i845
chipset; when doing 'startx', one of two things occurs: either the
server aborts, giving a no screens found error, or else multiple lines
and dots of various colors appear on the screen and the machine locks.

I have used debconf to try several different combinations of color
depths and resolutions. None have thus far been successful, but, as I
said, the results that they yield are consistent. The multiple lines of
various colors (and machine locking) happens at color depths =8bpp, and
the no screens found error occurs at colors depths 8bpp -- resolution
doesn't seem to matter in either case.

No other fatal error messages (besides the no screens found) occur. I
have attached the error logs for each situation, and I have also
attached the XFree86Config-4 for each situation (all named so as to
hopefully avoid ambiguity). I am using kernel-image-2.4.21-4-686 on a
2.4GHz P4 with 256MB of RAM. I have the kernel AGP module loaded, and
there doesn't appear to be a DRM module for the i845 chipset with the
kernerl that I am using. I would greatly appreciate any help that could
be provided.

system locks (p4, i845 chipset, kernel 2.4.21)

2003-06-30 Thread Joe Paxton
Installed Debian on a P4 (1.6GHz) with 128MB RAM, Intel i845 chipset, Intel eepro 100
ethernet card, nVidia GeForce2 MX video card, onboard Intel i8*0 audio. Set aside
~500MB swap. After I get everything installed and updated to 'testing' (and I've done
this several times), the system inevitably locks. It doesn't matter if I'm in X or not
(not using nVidia drives, anyhow), totally modular kernel with _no modules loaded_
(nothing beyond what I need to boot the system)... the system still locks (no input,
no output).

I've checked the fans, and they are all working. I've tested the memory using
memtest86 (booted into the diagnostic using the file supplied in the memtest package),
ran a thorough test, and everything comes out fine. I have run Windows XP Professional
on this system in the past without a problem. So I'm thinking it's unlikely that it is
directly hardware related (bad memory, HDD, etc.), but rather that it probably has
something to do with the kernel. Are there any known fatal bugs with the specific
chipset or processor that I mentioned above? I am using kernel 2.4.21, currently (have
compiled manually and tried the kernel-image-2.4.21-686 package with the same
results), and Googling has turned-up nothing for me in that regard.

I would appreciate any insight.

no audio cds

2003-03-25 Thread Joe Paxton
Hello:

Running Debian Woody on a Dell Inspiron 2650c, I am able to read data
cds (the installation cd, for example), but I am unable to read (play)
audio cds. I am not trying to mount the audio cd (I realize that this is
not needed), but rather, when I put an audio cd in the drive, and do 'cd
/cdrom' and then 'ls' I see nothing in the drive (and so when I try to
add that directory to the XMMS playlist, for example, nothing is added).

I have attached my config for kernel 2.4.18 and my dmesg output. Thank
you for your time.

Re: no audio cds (fixed)

Thanks to everyone who answered. The problem was, in fact, a combination
of insufficiennt permissions and my flawed reasoning -- as was suggested
by many of the replies.

 Correct.

Since you can't mount an audio CD you wont see anything in /cdrom since
/cdrom is just a simple directory.

Try adding the device file to your xmms playlist (ie /dev/hdc or
whatever your cdrom is). This will allow xmms raw access to the cdrom
 if permissions permit it.

any help.

no netscape

2001-02-12 Thread Joe Paxton
I recently installed 'potato' on my iMac and got X up and working - just one
problem.
I click on the Netscape icon on the taskbar and nothing happens. I installed
the Netscape-pseudo package using dselect (which I am assuming installs
everything that you need as far as Netscape goes)but still no luck.
I realize that this is probably simple, but I would just like some push in the
right direction for my confidence. Really appreciate it. I think I'm going to
like this whole Debian thing.

Either put a higher value here (only if your monitor supports it! You have
been warned) or put other modes in the Display Subsection. If everything
fails, put default as a mode there. That will make it use the mode from
console.
