FYI: Branden's Response to DPL Platform Question
I asked Branden Robinson a question about his DPL platform, and got a pretty good response, so I thought I'd post it here. Question: While I am in no 'official' position to request this (I'm just a random interested user), I'd really appreciate you guys including some stuff about the current release cycle, the ongoing delays in releasing Sarge, and possible ideas on how to improve the situation in future releases. Reply: I do mention the issue in my platform, but I have no specific recommendations to make at this time. If elected, I will work with Anthony Towns, Colin Watson, and Steve Langasek as best I can to identify the problems they perceive, and collaboratively come up with solutions. There are several hard problems that work together to make releasing Debian difficult. Also, the rewrite of our installer technology has put a unique load on this release cycle. It's worth reviewing Anthony's mail to debian-devel-announce in December, and Colin's last week, to get an idea of some of the challenges they've had to face. The fact that approximately 6% of our archive fails to meet bare minimum expectations leads me to believe that we may want to inaugurate a special process for orphaning such packages. Perhaps I'm just dense, but what's new here? To me, Ian's "plan" sounds like a fairly good description of debian with "lets all use the same package format" thrown in (another old idea). How is debian NOT componentized? Doesn't debian already have a repository of packages based on apt? Doesnt debian already support the installation of a "core" system, and then allow one to download any specific components/software one needs? I'm not saying that any of this is a bad idea, but why start another project when one can get the same thing by just using debian? Perhaps others can tell me what it is about these concepts that I'm missing. Well, I guess the difference here (in my idea, anyway) is that the main repository wouldn't be under the control of a single distribution. It'd be a central repository used by all participating distributions. Currently, Debian's repository is just that - Debian's repository. Yeah, it's very large, and very open to others, but it's still Debian's. I guess if you consider Debian's as "the world's", then we're already there. -- Joel Konkle-Parker Webmaster [Ballsome.com] E-mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Gnome Mixer 1.4 Problems
I'm using Gnome 1.4 on Debian 3.0r2 with OSS sound. I use Gnome Mixer to set my system volume to very low, but whenever I reboot, it magically goes right back to (almost) full. It's almost like it's being told to go back to some saved position that's at an 80% mark or something. Note that when I log out of Gnome and then right back in, my personal volume setting is preserved. I do have esd start with Gnome, and I don't have "Restore mixer levels of Gnome Mixer" checked in either Gnome Control Panel or Gnome Mixer Preferences. In fact, when I do check these, it resets the volume on a logout/login as well as a reboot. So I'm thinking there's some kind of default setting that's getting applied during system startup, but I can't imagine what it would be. Anyone have any ideas? Taking a module from another kernel?
Is it possible to compile a single module from a later kernel source for my current kernel? I'm using the stock Debian kernel-image-2.4.18-1-686, but the driver for my sound card only works in 2.4.20 and later. I want to keep running the Debian one for the stability and the security updates, though. Is there some way to take i810_audio.c from the 2.4.20 kernel sources and compile it for my 2.4.18? Audio Advice
I've got an integrated AC'97 audio chip in my laptop that uses the i810_audio kernel driver or ALSA's snd-intel8x0 driver. The problem is that Woody's latest kernel (2.4.18) is too old to support my particular audio chip (first supported in 2.4.20). So I've got three options, I believe: 1. Build myself a new 2.4.2x kernel. 2. Install Woody's alsa packages and compile a corresponding module version for my 2.4.18 kernel. 3. Build myself a new ALSA system. Any advice on what would be the cleanest solution here? I've dabbled in Gentoo for a little while, and they have a system that prompts for download of the j2re from Sun, then performs its own tasks on it. That would be equivalent to the following: -- # apt-get install sun-j2re downloading... yada yada This package requires Sun's j2re package to be downloaded seperately. I have no doubt this is a Big Fat FAQ, but I'd like to get some discussions on it anyway: Why can't Sun's j2re and mplayer be provided in non-free or contrib? Multi-word Label in LILO
For some reason, LILO in unstable doesn't seem to like multi-word Label lines. They worked fine in woody's version, though. I tried: Label=Debian 2.4.18 Label="Debian 2.4.18" Label='Debian 2.4.18' but it complained each time about spaces in the Label. The only way I could get it to work was to put: Label=Debian_2.4.18 What's the right way to do this? Re: No to wine! (was:"Red Hat recommends...")
techlists wrote: I really love the analogy of comparing wine to a crutch. Because that is exactly what it is. An as a crutch, we should not be trying to make the crutch better, rather work on healing the leg so that the crutch is not needed. In this case instead of making windows apps work under linux, we make linux apps that are better. And to those companies who will not port their products to linux, especially the games makers, we tell them you can shove your windows krap, we will use a native product, and even if the native one is not as good, I will still use it over you product, so you either develop for us or go bankrupt. If we continue on this "make linux able to run windows app" we give no insentive to companies to develop for linux. That as was said before OS/2 fell for the same reason. No one developed for os/2, so win windows changed it's code and win-os/2 couldn't run the new apps..well we know what happened. os/2 was too far behind with it's native apps to catch up. So use wine as a crutch if you wish, but never want it to be a full product, or we will lose in the marketplace. Let's take the special case of games again. In this case, it's not a matter of making a better product for linux. If Blizzard came out with Diablo III for linux tomorrow, that wouldn't allow me to play Diablo I. You're right about apps, though. If Microsoft Office won't work on linux, use OpenOffice. But games are not applications. They're entertainment. And a later version of a piece of entertainment does not supercede a previous piece. It's simply another piece. So how do we solve the problem of games under linux? There's a few possibilities: 1. They're permanently tied to Windows, and that's the way it will be. This forces gamers to have a second partition or computer running Windows for their games. Not the situation we want to be in. 2. Current games should be ported to Linux. This is possible, but not very easy at all. There's no source, so it takes an insider to do it, or some contractor. And the companies need to have an incentive to embark on this kind of project. Which means when these ports do happen, we need to spend our hard-earned cash on them. 3. Companies should start making their games Linux-compatible. Like above, there needs to be an incentive. And right now, I could buy Quake III for Linux for a whopping $45 or so from TuxGames. Or I could buy it for Windows for $5 on eBay. This type of pricing scheme will go nowhere. 4. Wine. The crutch this is absolutely right, but right now that's the only way to play Windows-only games on Linux. And the better it is, the better we are for it. By the way: want to support Linux gaming? a.out libraries?
This is related to my previous Doom thread. I've got the official Linux Doom executables working now, except for two sticking points: With linuxxdoom, the X version, it brings up a message saying "xdoom currently only supports 256-color PseudoColor screens". I don't really want to adjust my X settings just to get this working, so I tried the SVGAlib version. With linuxsdoom, the SVGAlib version, I get a message saying "can't load library libvga.so.1: Exec format error". This version of Doom was created back when a.out binaries were standard. so I presume it needs an a.out version of libvga.so.1. Desktop hostname?
I'm an average-Joe user on a lone desktop machine connected to the internet through a cable modem & router. Currently, I have my hostname set to 'Moe', simply because I think Moe is a good name for my computer. This seems to show up in lots of other things, though, like assumed e-mail addresses and default identifiers and such. Is there anything this /should/ be set to? 'localhost' seems to be the default, but that doesn't seem any more descriptive or useful than my made-up name. I guess this question is related to my exim settings. Exim has always seemed to me to be good for server-type systems, not home desktops. Although I'd really like to get it working to at least be able to send mail through it, so I don't have the personal stigma of having a 'broken mail system' anymore. Miguel de Icaza on Debian
OSNews is reporting this <http://primates.ximian.com/~miguel/texts/linux-developers.html> article by Miguel de Icaza in which he talks about (among other things) the difficulty of supporting Debian. Choice quote: "It is clearly the choice for many free software enthusiasts and is very entrenched due to its deep community roots. "Community-oriented" distros
With the recent launch of Red Hat's Fedora, it seems to me that we now have three major options for people looking for a community-based Linux distribution for x86: Debian, Gentoo, and Fedora. I'm currently using Woody, mostly because of the community aspect (just "feels" right to me) and the package stability system. I'm a home user with a new Dell laptop and no real reason to have an enterprise-quality product except my own peace of mind. So my questions: 1. Are there other community-based distributions out there that would be worth a look? 2. Which would be best for my needs? Are there other philosophical differences between them that I should know about (besides Gentoo's source-only approach)? Gnome meltdown
I had somewhat of a Gnome meltdown last night, and I'm trying to pick up the pieces. I'm using a generic clean tasksel "desktop system" install of Gnome 1.4 on Woody. Here's what happened: 1. I ejected my pcmcia 802.11b card, since it was causing some problems (ksoftirqd_CPU0 using 100% cpu, it does this occasionally, ejecting and reinserting always fixes it) 2. When I reinserted it later, I noticed that the system didn't beep and the card's LED didn't come on. So, I logged out and rebooted. 3. When I logged back in to Gnome, I noticed that my panel was gone (a top one). I also noticed that when I started a gnome-terminal, it wasn't reading my .bashrc. A `source .bashrc` fixes it. 4. Thinking it was a fluke, I logged out and shut down for the night. 5. This morning, I started it up, logged in, and the problem was still there. Interestingly, the gnome-terminal I left open from last night read .bashrc correctly when it restarted. New terminals still don't read it. xterm and uxterm work correctly. 6. The 802.11b card works correctly now. So, does any of this make sense to anyone? What could cause this to happen? More importantly, how do I get my panel back, and how to I get gnome-terminal to source my .bashrc on startup?
