non-dpkg owned libc6 - etch to lenny upgrade problem

2009-02-25 Thread John Fleming

Consider me a newbie - trying to upgrade etch to lenny, getting msg about
having a non-dpkg owned copy of libc6-i686. "Can't live with it, can't live
without it". Can't remove it. Can't upgrade with what I have. Previously
I've done all installs and upgrades with apt-get. I started this system
with sarge, and successfully upgraded to etch a couple of years ago and have
kept etch upgraded. I've tried apt-get -f dist-upgrade and aptitude
dist-upgrade with same results.

Specific next steps, please?

Thanks! - John

I/O error reading swsusp image with 2.6.18-6-686

2008-05-16 Thread John Fleming
It's been over 48 hrs, and I didn't get a single bite on this, so thought
I'd try again. I have a problem that only raises it's head with the
2.6.18-6-686 kernel, but not the 2.6.18-4-686:

I've been struggling with my server not rebooting due to stopping at the
error:

Begin: Running /scripts/local-premount ...
kinit: name_to_dev_t(/dev/hda2) = hda2(3,2)
kinit: trying to resume from /dev/hda2
Attempting manual resume
attempt to access beyond end of device
hda2: rw=16, want=8, limit=2
I/O error reading swsusp image.

The boot stops at this point. Painfully, when this first occurred, I wasn't
able to solve it, and actually reinstalled etch and then my last backup
files. Later I learned that if I had just booted from a different kernel
(2.6.18-4 instead of -6), it would've booted fine!

Anyway, tonight I decided to try to reinstall 2.6.18-6-686 to stay up to
date. In my newbieness, I uninstalled 2.6.18-6, and then reinstalled it.
However, when I try to boot 2.6.18-6, I get the sususp error and it won't
boot! Of course, I can still boot with the -4 kernel fine.

Does anyone know anything about this? I have no idea why it's talking about
swsusp. (The uswsusp package is not installed, and there hasn't been any
suspending going on that I know about.)

Thanks a bunch! - John

update-grub problem

2008-05-14 Thread John Fleming
I'm trying to install linux-image-2.6.18-6-686 using apt-get. I recently
made the recommended change in /etc/kernel-img.conf to include:

postinst_hook = usr/sbin/update-grub
postrm_hook = usr/sbin/update-grub

When I run the apt-get install, the configuration fails with the error
about

"Could not find postinst hook script [usr/sbin/update-grub]."

However, that script DOES exist in the stated path. So what gives with
this?

Re: update-grub problem

2008-05-14 Thread John Fleming

What is the current working directory when this script gets run. You
told it
usr/sbin/update-grub

not
/usr/sbin/update-grub

Note the difference.

I still don't know why this is necessary. During the most recent kernel
upgrade in Etch, I watched carefully for the usual warning message about
not running /sbin/update-grub and didn't see it.

Doug.

DUH! How can we miss something like that once in awhile? Thanks Doung and
Mike - Adding the preceding slash fixed that problem, but brings out another
problem I have that belongs in another thread. Please see my next post
about I/O error reading swsusp image. I only get the error running
2.6.18-6-686 but not 2.6.18-4-686.

Restore apache help

2008-03-08 Thread John Fleming
Continuing to restore my server -

I've installed apache and restored my home dirs and /etc/apache dir.
That's not adequate though, as other configs are needed. Right now
every browse is directed to the default /var/www dir and my httpd.conf
is being ignored due to various references to other config files.

Rather than trying to figure out exactly what it wants and restoring
that, one thing at a time, is it safe/advisable for me to restore my
entire old /etc dir from my backup?

Googling around I've found some good material about restoring user
accounts. Any other advice on what's safe/advisable to restore versus
having to individually install and configure? Can I restore the
entire /usr and /var dirs, or is that not advisable?

Thanks - John

It's really fixed now - Subsequent reboots are fine, including
shutdown -rF. Between the complexity of this and my relative
inexperience, I am not going to know exactly what caused the errors.
But I learned a lot about what to do if I ever see it again. That
dialog about control-D or entering maintenance mode doesn't make sense
to me - I hit "n", it echoes "no", but then proceeds to run and work!
Things are fine now, but I need to start a new thread about restoring
apache. Thanks again Doug.

Doug, thanks for the good ideas - I learned some things from your
considered response. I ended up finally reinstalling etch again.
I've now captured the pertinent part of the boot messages and will
copy below. Why does the filesystem check c

fsck'd

2008-03-07 Thread John Fleming
Backgroud - I had a well-established LAMP server that was giving some
filesystem errors on boot, with the "hit control-D to continue or give root
password to fix manually" message. It would go ahead and work normally if I
hit Control-D. However, I wanted to try to get rid of the error and need
for human intervention in the event of the need for a remote reboot, so I
tried to fix the errors with fsck. Somehow I ended up with a badly trashed
filesystem and inability to reboot.

After much knashing of teeth and consideration of my options, I installed a
new etch system. I installed several benign packages like apache. I ran
update and dist-upgrade to bring the system up to date. When I ran the
upgrade, it told me that it was trying to install an identical kernel
image. It explained some things about what it was doing about modules, and
then said to be sure to reboot. I did that, but then it gave me that
now-familiar message about how the filesystem has errors, hit control-D to
continue...

I booted with Knoppix, made sure my filesystem on /dev/hda1 was NOT mounted,
and ran fsck -f. It did the 5 passes without mention of errors. I ran it a
second time with same results. However, when I boot from /dev/hda1, I still
get the error about a filesystem with errors!

Trying to rebuild the server as it was is painful enough - Why would I be
having these filesystem errors? The HDD is relatively new.

Any other way to try to get rid of the boot error before I reinstall etch
again? I hate to do that because I don't understand how these errors
originate, so I don't know why I shouldn't expect them to crop up again at
some point later after another fresh install.

Why does the fsck during boot find errors when the fsck run via knoppix on
the same filesystem return clean?

Thanks any help! - John

John,

This reply was posted on the Mondo Devel list. Sorry that you missed seeing

I had a similar problem. I created a Mondo DVD (from Debian Etch

make the backup.

Any other suggestions out there? Thanks - John

Thanks, Ian! I googled and tried several things that didn't help
yesterday. Then I ran apt-get update/upgrade and noticed there were
updates for mysql-server and mysql-server-5.0. These upgraded OK
without error messages, and afterwards, my mysql will run again! I
have no idea what happened originally or exactly what was repaired
with the upgrade, but I had a backup of my databases and now have
everything back as before! Praise God!

Thanks, Ian. It's not that I can't CONNECT - mysql won't even start, i.e.
it FAILS to start during reboot, and it won't start using /etc/init.d/mysql
start from a terminal. phpMyAdmin won't let me login, but that's just
because mysql is not even running.

When you say "reinstalled it all" above, what "all" has to be reinstalled?
I think what I am asking is:

1. What constitutes a basic "fresh mysql [re]install"?
2. How to debug further?

Re: Re: Using backports after upgrade

2007-11-04 Thread John Fleming

I think that you may find that the SA upgrades have migrated to
debian-volatile. Its a new official service for upgrades that are not
security-minded (as is security.debian.org) but that info changes (such
as virus and spam scanners). If so, its just one more line in your
sources.list.

Doug.

Then I upgraded to Etch. I have backports in my sources.list, but I don't

3.2.3)

Is there something about my upgrading from sarge to etch that could've
affected this?

So what is the magic incantation on Debian?
Xwindows usually runs on tty7or tty8 as I
recall from Mandrake and Yellow Dog. And
it is accessed via F7 or F8.

I see you posted to the mondo list also.
Found this:

http://lists.debian.org/debian-qa/2004/02/msg00059.html

Which seems to suggest that you must use a failsafe kernel:

man mondoarchive:

...
-k path Path of user's kernel. If you are a Debian or Gentoo user
then specify -k FAILSAFE as your kernel. Otherwise, you will rarely
need this option.

...

That said, I see that in my stock Debian I have in the .config:

CONFIG_CRAMFS=y

and I run mondoarchive just fine w/o failsafe.
But I run Sid.
What kernel are you running?

Hugo

FWIW (not much), I've been running mondoarchive with sarge and now etch with
various 2.4 and 2.6 kernels WITHOUT needing the FAILSAFE kernel, and I've
not had this problem. So it might be a kernel problem, but I doubt it's any
"usual" problem - It's not just because it's a Debian kernel etc...

Gallery2-Sarge

2007-06-24 Thread John Fleming
Hello - I've used Gallery2 and Gallery1 by installing from the tar.gz
package from the menalto website. I see they are available in Sarge, and I
have questions about installing one codebase and using from several
different virtual host URLs.

I'd like to know more about how the install goes using the deb packages.
What are you asked during installation, ie do they give you a chance to
install to virtual hosts? I've read the support docs about how to do that
starting with the tar/gz package, but I haven't been successful doing it
that way for multiple virtual hosts on the same server, AND I know it would
be generally more desirable to install from the sarge packages with a Debian
package manager etc.

I'm guessing the deb packages install and then you are just directed to the
/gallery2/install directory after which you proceed with the web installer
like I do starting from the tar.gz package? Or does Debian do it a
different way?

Thanks any comments about gallery2 on virtual hosts.

From what I have read in the Etch Install notes, it is actually

recomended that Etch be clean-installed and not dist-upgraded from
sarge due to issues being reported in this process. Maybe things have
changed though.

Oh I hope that's not true or needs qualification. That would negate a prime

Inexperienced question - I'm running Sarge, with newer ClamAV from
volatile and newer SpamAssassin from backports. When I'm ready to

Any specific comments and advice greatly appreciated!

Are we changing the subject? Why? If what I have said is _objectively_
wrong, please explain _why_. Otherwise, such reactions make me think
that you are just angry with yourself because you _have_ given Roberto
another excuse to hide his problems (without the OT label). Note that
he's already managed to put you against me, so the two of us should
really avoid to pollute the list by doing his trolling for him.

Enough already, or does somebody have to mention Nazis?

Personally, I had already decided that, from now on, any off topic
rambling by the people we have already mentioned will cause an
immediate reply, both on the list and to the moderators, requesting,
with links to this thread, that they are banned from posting.
I invite all other subscribers to do the same.

I hope the bean counters are counting how many of -this- "rampant" thread
there are. Surely it will approach the totals for other OT threads, thus
doubling the "problem". Completely predictable. Those who object to a
certain thread as being OT, start their own OT thread about the original OT
thread and double the problem. You guys should have learned how to deal
with this in kindergarten - ignore it, don't feed it, and it usually goes
away quickly - and with less mess than if you try to jump in and "correct"
it. -This- thread has already become uglier than any of the original OT
threads.

Newbie help how to enlarge root partition

2007-04-24 Thread John Fleming
I'm the guy that recently dd'd hda (40GB) to hdb (160GB) and then put the
larger drive in the first position, making it now the new hda. I knew I
would then be using only 40GB of the 160GB HDD. I thought it would be easy
to enlarge the 40GB root partition, but this newbie is having trouble with
that.

I tried using a Knoppix live CD and QtParted, but I still couldn't figure
out to do it - When the root partition was selected, "resize" was not even
an option (dimmed out).

I've looked at fdisk and parted, but I need help. Do I need to start over
copying my 40GB HDD to a properly-partitioned 160GB HDD, or can someone give
me detailed instructions to expand my 40GB root partition to use the
available free space on the new drive?

Thanks - My current partitions are shown below. - John

SOLVED Re: New HDD install weirdness? (dd)

2007-04-22 Thread John Fleming

Try pulling out both hard drives and booting from CD. If you continue
to get the beeping thingy you'll know its probably something with the
bios.

Well, it's not doing it anymore! I booted from the Knoppix CD again to
observe the behavior, and it didn't do it. And when I rebooted the next
time from the new HDD, it didn't do it either! EVERYTHING worked just as
expected, including the stop to allow me to make kernel choice etc.

In the interim, I went into and out of the BIOS setup screen a couple of
times, but I didn't change anything, and just hit ESC to continue bootup.

So after ~5 boots using the HDD and a couple using Knoppix CD, it seems to
have gotten a clue and it's fine now. Real scientific. I'm happy though,
and I apologize for the bandwidth! Maybe this experience will be
strangely encouraging to someone else though! Thanks Doug and all! -

New HDD install weirdness? (dd)

2007-04-22 Thread John Fleming
I am using Sarge with kernel 2.6.8-3-686 on a Dell 600SC, previously with
2x40GB HDDs. (hdb was a backup - The entire system was on hda.) I wanted
to replace those HDDs with new, larger HDDs.

1. I installed the first new HDD in the physical position of hdb. I booted
with a Knopppix live CD, made sure the drives were unmounted, and then I
used dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/hdb to mirror hda on the original old drive to
one of the new HDDs. This worked as expected, and I could see my
directories on the new HDD.

2. Next I physically moved the new HDD to the hda position, and I also
physically installed my other new HDD into the hdb position for future use.

3. When I rebooted, immediately after the Dell welcome screen, I hear new
sounds - a tone punctuated by a stacco-like interruption, making it sound
sort of like "beeping". My son is a linux sysadmin, so I called him. He
led me through running grub via Knoppix, and we ran through grub setup on
hd0,0 etc. When I rebooted after this, I was again greeted with the
beeping.

4. Since I thought we were hosed, I again tried to reboot with the Knoppix
live CD. This time I also got the beeping - although it should've simply
booted the Knoppix CD. However, after a period of beeping, it went ahead
and booted into Knoppix! Given this [strange] behavior, I went back and
tried to boot the HDD again, only this time I let it beep longer. After
about 30sec, I got some grub messages about stage 5, then some messages
about what kernel it was going to use etc. I used to get a list of several
2.4 and 2.6 kernels to choose from, but now that screen just flashes for a
few msec and then disappears. Anyway, after telling me what kernel is being
used, there is another delay for about 10-15 sec, and THEN IT GOES ON AND
BOOTS COMPLETELY NORMALLY! Everything about the server and it's usual
services are normal!

Does anyone see what's happening with this? Since it happens now even with
the Knoppix CD (it didn't used to), I am completely lost. The bios is set
to boot from CD, and normally it would just start booting into Knoppix, but
now this strange delay and beeping. Until right now I assumed it was
something about the new HDD but now I'm not so sure.

Any help greatly appreciated! - John

Depends on what you mean by "verify". There is nothing wrong with
downloading their public keys and using them to verify that all the
messages purporting to come from them are indeed signed with the same key
and so probably did come from the same person. However, you should not

What exactly is signing a key, and how does it work?

I'd Google it...but I wouldn't know where to start.

While we're still on this, why do most of your (Debian-users-who-sign)

It seems whether I use GPG or a Thawte cert, they still don't show up as
attachments. Are you doing something "special" to make them show up that
way, and I assume there's something desirable about doing it that way -
please tell me. Makes it hostile to REPLY TO, at least with OE. I suppose
the problem is with OE, but I'd still like to understand what's happening.

Subject: Firestarter bug?

Very strange.

I installed Firestarter on Debian Stable (i386). It is picking up the
routine periodic dhcp send events from my router, and sending them to to
the tty consoles, where they overwrite part of the screen. These are
the same as what shows up in the Firestarter "events" screen.

Note: this does not occur on the X terminals (i.e., xterm), so it was
not noticed until I did CTRL-ALT-F1 (or CTRL-ALT-F2, etc).

I uninstalled Firestarter, and the behavior stopped. I reinstalled
Firestarter, and it started again.

This makes it almost impossible to use the tty consoles. Is there a way
to stop Firestarter from writing to the tty consoles uninvited?

I have same behavior, and stopped it using dmesg -1 (See man dmesg)

Maybe there's a better way, but this was perfect for my situation. - John

The dd can be from a live cdrom or from a small partition on the box
reserved just for this purpose. The latter is no good in the case of a
dead disk but is convenient otherwise.

What about mirrordir? Assuming equal partitions on 2 disks, say from a
prior dd run, how does the result of

mirrordir --strict-locking / /mnt/backup

compare with appropriately using dd? (/dev/hdb1 is mounted on /mnt/backup)

Seems like mirrordir makes a nice backup option too? Thanks any comments -

RAID recognition?

2005-09-21 Thread John Fleming
I run mondoarchive/restore on a Dell 600SC with IDE drives on sarge. It
works great, and I've even used mondorestore nuke to restore to a different
machine with IDE drives. However, now I need to restore to a new Dell 1810
with 2 SCSI drives and Perc4 RAID 1 controller.

Mondo apparently doesn't recognize the RAID controller. I'm running Debian
Sarge with a 2.4 kernel. The kernel is fine, as I can do a virgin Debian
install on the new machine just fine - The RAID controller -is- properly
recognized.

Mondorestore comes up with a crazy partitioning suggestion, and nothing I
edit it to is acceptable - just says that the device doesn't exist.

Is this a Debian subject related to the kernel used at the time of backup or
a Mondo subject? Any specific help appreciated. As a newbie, it will be
very time-consuming to build up the new server to the same functionality as
the old one presently has. The mondorestore nuke option (restore to bare
metal) is very attractive!

Thanks much for your suggestions! - John

2005-09-13 Thread John Fleming
I have MySQL installed on my Debian Sarge system and working fine with a

me as a newbie to install and interface with a web page? This would be for

up for event times. E.g. I would want a surfer to see a list of times,
enter his name next to a time, and then the database and web page be updated
to reflect the new signup.

Thanks any ideas, directions to go, etc. I've googled a lot of mysql
frontends etc, but I need some more direction. Thanks! - John

Re: upgraded from FC2 --> FC3 successfully

- Original Message -
From: "H. S." <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Subject: upgraded from FC2 --> FC3 successfully

Hi,

This is just to describe how I upgraded from FC2 to FC3 successfully using
the upgrade option from the FC3 CDs.

Before I started the process, I by chance noted that my FC2 installation
has some packages installed twice. I got a list by using the following
command (found on google):

rpm -q --qf "%{NAME}\n" -a | sort | uniq -cd

Then I proceeded to remove the older version of each of the packages that
were installed twice. Other than that, I didn't need to do anything else.

Then I inserted FC3 CD1 and rebooted and chose the upgrade option.
Everything went well, except that it took around 2 hours or so (P 4 1.9
GHz, 256MB RAM). This is actually slowerd, because I guess FC3 can be
installed in around 50 minutes time (if not too much time is taken for
package selection).

After this, I rename my yum.conf to yum.conf.fc3 in /etc and
yum.conf.rpmnew to yum.conf to get the FC3 based yum.conf file. I also
made similar changes in /etc/sysconfig/rhn for sources file. This was I
prepared the yum tool and up2date tool to look at FC3 sites for an update.

I then upgraded the installation. It all went well, though it took quite a
long while. Also, since due to the sheer number of packages to upgrade, I
upgraded in steps. I upgraded by choosing groups of packages in decreasing
or order of system importance: libraries and compilers first, browsers and
applications second, office application third and so on.

One thing to note, for those who use apt (and synaptic), the sources.list
file was not upgraded (did not get a new one with rpmnew extension). I had
to change that file to make it see FC3 mirrors. But once I upgraded apt
and synaptic, they upgraded the /etc/apt directory too and the older files
were saved with rpmsave extension.

After the upgrade, I got an error while starting synaptic (something to do
with libstc5++ or something like this). To resolve this, I had to install
compat-libstdc++. I then found out this packages was actually needed by
many other packages as well.

Finally, I added the Freshrpms file in /etc/yum.repos.d and also dag
repositories and updated the installation again. The new thing in FC3
seems to be the /etc/yum.repos.d directory in which each file can be each
repository file. Also, I have made files in this directory which list
mirrors near me and in fedora*.repo files I am calling these mirror files.

->HS

Sure sounds like a lot of work compared with apt-get update, apt-get
dist-upgrade.

the gateway right. If you don't get it working easily, send the contents
of your /etc/network/interfaces file. - John

Well. I have reconfigured the system as you said.

But the Powerbook can't identify the ADSL modem.
It ONLY works with the PC. Perhaps I should have
said that from the beginning, oops. :-(
But now I know how to do it if I buy another
modem, which I can't do right now btw.
Any suggestion about a good ADSL modem(minimum 8Mbit) which works with
Linux?

--
You don't need "a DSL modem that works with Linux". If the DSL modem works
with WIN XP on the Powerbook, you should be able to share that connection.
You said the Powerbook has 2 NICs - one to the modem and one to a
hub/router. Anything (Linux, Windows, ?) that you plug into the router
should be on the Internet. The things that you connect to the router don't
have to know anything specific to your DSL modem. - John
P.S. You still didn't send your /etc/network/interfaces info...

Re: Sharing the internet connection with XP

2005-07-10 Thread John Fleming

The PC has 2 network cards. The first one is connected to an ethernet ADSL

modem. The second network card is connected to a 100Mbit switch which is
connected to my Powerbook.

I now have a working connection between these 2 computers, I have
succesfully

transferred files by ftp, but this is only in the local network. So...
Any suggestions?

Both the PC and the Mac has a static IP address which is used in the local

network. My connection to the internet, there I
get an automatic IP address from
my ISP.

What does ipconfig say? I would edit your /etc/network/interfaces to get a
dynamic IP from your XP machine and list the XP's IP as the gateway and you
should be done. I guess it should work with a fixed IP as well if you have
the gateway right. If you don't get it working easily, send the contents of
your /etc/network/interfaces file. - John

Re: Starting SA with Procmail

2005-07-04 Thread John Fleming

I'm giving up on procmail.

You shouldn't have to give up. I suspect a lot of people use procmail just
as you have described you want to do. It is the simplest implementation of
SpamAssassin, ClamAV, and Postfix, and works great. You shouldn't be
limited as to whether you use it site-wide of user-specific.

I use procmail to call ClamAV for site-wide analysis of all email, and then
have .procmailrc files for each user that I want to use SpamAssassin. At
this time I'm using site-wide SpamAssassin rules, but you don't have to do
it that way.

Everything else you try will be more complex than using procmail. I think
you should get procmail sorted out before you try the others. - John

Re: clamav update to 0.86.1 using volatile.debian.net

2005-07-01 Thread John Fleming

It appears that there are updated packages ( 0.86.1 ) for 0.85.1. My
/etc/apt/sources.list looks like this.

hercules:/home/alex/public_html/sasknet# cat /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://mirrors.kernel.org/debian sarge main contrib

deb http://ftp2.de.debian.org/debian-volatile sarge/volatile main
deb-src http://ftp2.de.debian.org/debian-volatile stable/volatile main

deb http://security.debian.org/ sarge/updates main contrib non-free

As far as i can tell my entry in sources.list is correct but when i run
apt-get update and then apt-get upgrade it indicated there are 0 packages
to be upgraded. Am i jumping the gun here or can someone tell me where I'm
going wrong.

I get my ClamAV updates using the apt sources.list with:

deb http://people.debian.org/~sgran/debian sarge main

and it's current with 0.86.1

Re: Sarge: mondo problems

Unfortunately mondo is a tricky beast to get to work. In the past I've
had to try multiple versions from the above source, until something works.
I'd like to be able to upgrade my work server to sarge, but I'll need to
sort these issues out first.

I've had a stock Sarge install going since it was "testing". Mondo has
worked flawlessly, including after it went stable (of course). My kernel is
2.4.26-1-386. Keep us posted as to what you get worked out - I find Mondo
invaluable and wouldn't want to lose it with a kernel or other change. -

Bayes? - 3rd try

2005-06-14 Thread John Fleming

Not sure what I'm doing wrong, but noone has responded to my question -

If Bayes is working properly, am I supposed to have a Bayes_ entry in the
X-Spam_Status header info for every email? I think that's the way it used
to be - Bayes_00 - Bayes_99 etc. Lately it seems that only the spam emails
have those entries.

What am I missing? I apologize if this should be obvious, but if it is,
I've messed it and would really like to understand why my setup has changed.
My config is simple - calling spamc from procmail. Still working well, but
I have less entries in the headers and often no Bayes... Thanks - JOhn

DON'T DO IT! No one would recommend it! When I first started, I had a lot

installed Knoppix (easy), changed my sources.list to the main USA Debian

Strange, if you have customized XF86Config-4 (every should, as there is
no default), it should (a) leave it alone, or (b) ask you what to do.
If it does neither, then it is bug that needs to be filed.

Hi Roberto!

Yes, there is definately something wrong, since it didn't ask aswell.
Bug filed: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=312101
Let's see what the X folks say...

I did the Sarge update/dist-upgrade last night as well - no questions. I'm
remote from my servers today, so I can't test the mouse, but my mouse
section of my XF86Config-4 appears unchanged, so I expect it to work.

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Configured Mouse"
Driver "mouse"
Option "CorePointer"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"

Restore from the regular weekly/daily backups you keep.

I haven't, but what is the best way for do it back up of the system,
any documentation over there ??

Think about using Mondoarchive. You should be able to backup your whole
system to one or a few DVDs or CDs. If you lose something, it is trivial to
restore that file or directory from the backup. Furthermore, if you really
trash the system, you can just boot from the 1st backup medium, type "nuke"
and watch it restore your system - everything! It's a beautiful thing to
watch! - John

Hi,

I have an issue with webmin, I can login as root to 127.0.0.1:1 with
the unix root password, but I cannot login to its external IP,
130.195.20.24:1

I have set allow=130.195.0.0/255.255.0.0 127.0.0.1 in miniserv.conf

But still no joy.

I tried to enable ssl and generate new keys...no joy but 127.0.0.1 still
works (mozilla on 127.0.0.1 gives me warnings about new keys but
connects OK)

What happens when you try to login?

The default webmin install in Sarge/testing has https enabled by default.
When I first set mine up, I ssh'd in from home, then ran Lynx to get to the
allow IP page and set my external IP that way. Roundabout, newbie approach,
but it does work. Not sure what your exact problem is.

Oh yeah - firewall OK?

GL - John

What do I have to do to get webmin working on the external Debian box
that differs to every other Unix/Linux?

I usually back up /etc, /boot and anywhere else I've added data (/home

the base packages, feed in the old installed package list to install
from and overwrite /etc with the backed-up version.

Actually, Fedora might be "sponsored" by Red Hat, but it is NOT "supported"
by Red Hat. If you have a problem with Fedora, you can't call RH for help.
You are correct that it is a community project based on Red Hat.

As a relative newbie, I found Fedora very challenging. I had started with
RH8, and then finally got web and mail servers going with FC1, as well as a
few other network-related apps. Then they came out with FC2 - In this case,
Fedora recommends a FULL NEW INSTALL. With the change from FC1 -> FC2,
there were MANY complaints - changed default mail servers and various things
that were challenging for newbies especially, but considering the volume of
email on the reflector, for more experienced users also. They have FC3
now - maybe it's smoothed out some...?

Fedora is proud to say they are on the cutting edge with short release
cycles. However, each release always involves a fresh FULL install, and I
wasn't interested. Maybe this would be OK for the very experienced that
were also into experimentation etc - I was looking more for some stability
and lack of frequent full upgrades.

I have loved Debian! Others have said that one of the strengths is apt-get
and how upgrading is handled. I've tried Sid and Sarge, and currently run
Sarge and will probably stick with Sarge when it goes stable. If you want
leading edge desktop stuff, use unstable and enjoy the fact that it's not
really very "unstable". Sarge is a nice compromise. As far as support,
there's plenty right here! (Thanks!) - John

cdrecord commands. Here's the response from cdrecord --scanbus:

NOTE: this version of cdrecord is an inofficial (modified) release of
cdrecord
and thus may have bugs that are not present in the original version.
Please send bug reports and support requests to

The original author should not be bothered with problems of this
version.

cdrecord: No such file or directory. Cannot open '/dev/pg*'. Cannot open

cdrecord: For possible targets try 'cdrecord -scanbus'.
cdrecord: For possible transport specifiers try 'cdrecord dev=help'.
cdrecord:
cdrecord: For more information, install the cdrtools-doc
cdrecord: package and read /usr/share/doc/cdrecord/README.ATAPI.setup .

The suggestions above don't help. Where to look for problem? Talk newbie
to me please. Thanks! - John

FWIW, my cron jobs are back in the Webmin listing. My problem might have
been local; not sure about the other poster.

Subject: Webmin (Sarge)

I recently installed the Debian Sarge Webmin package -- previously I had
used
the current version from . I did this, because at
the
time, the version in Sarge was considerably older than the Webmin current
version.

Since my installation of the official Sarge version, and deletion of the
previous webmin installation, I've not been able to view user/system created
Crontabs or Fetchmail configs within Webmin. I can view the crontabs of
course
from the terminal, and the fetchmailrc is available to read via vim, etc
from
the users home directory.

Any reason why the Debian Webmin wouldn't pick up the previous information?
I
would have thought on first run of the new application, it would pick up the
system configs.

Yes, I do have the appropriate modules installed in Webmin.

I don't think it's related to your previous install. I just noticed
yesterday that my system-related crontab stuff had disappeared in Webmin
too. I think I remember that when I did my last apt-get upgrade (sometime
in the last few days), there was an upgrade to webmin. Apparently
something's changed! I remember logging into Webmin to make sure it was
still working, but I hadn't put the upgrade together with my crontab stuff
disappearing until now! I think we just have to wait until it's upgraded
again. (Apparently not quite ready for the stable release.) - John

SquirrelMail has a shared calendar plugin that seems like it might fit your
needs, although a little limited in format options. It doesn't synch with
Evolution or Mozilla, but it can be setup public. - John

So will there be some warning preceding the release such that those of us

want our sources.list to point to "sarge" or to "testing"? - John

cdrecord and k3b

My mondoarchive couldn't write to my cdrom, and I started looking around for
why. K3B works perfectly from the KDE desktop, but cdrecord doesn't seem to
be able to find the cdrom. Here is some pertinent output from cdrecord and

Really naive question - Could recently-released SpamAssassin 3.0 still make
it into Sarge, or is that way too new and not enough time to make it into
Sarge? I wasn't sure if certain popular packages had a faster track through
the process. - John

being the newbie that I am, it took awhile for me to figure out that sar is
in the sysstat package.

System Monitor

2004-09-13 Thread John Fleming
What easy (newbie) way could I get a report of CPU and memory use averaged
over 24 hrs? I've had some issues with SpamAssassin using a lot of
available memory recently (probably too many network tests and rulesets). I
can watch it using top but would like a 24 hr average report. An emailed
report would be super. Thanks - John

Thanks, but that's not the problem. I'm posting this from gmane - not sure
what format they use, but I've tried my list subscribes either using plain text
from several different machines or by using the Debial list web page
subscription form.

I know there are a lotta Debian lists and [maybe] a lot of people doing stupid
things with their email, but I sure hope "someone with power" will have the
time to look into this for me. Thanks - John

CAN'T SUBSCRIBE

2004-09-11 Thread John Fleming
Sorry bandwidth, but I've hit a wall trying to subscribe. My
previously-subscribed debian-user email stopped about August 28th, and I've
tried everything to get it back. I've tried UNsubscribing and SUBscribing
from several different email addys, different ISPs, and from different
machines.

No matter what/where, I don't receive ANYTHING from Debian - no confirmation
requests, no email period.

I've tried writing the listadmin. I don't believe I'm blacklisted in any
way.

I don't use any filtering that would cause a problem - nothing set to delete
anything.

I'm relatively new and learn much from this list. I can read it in the
archives or using gmane, but I'd much prefer to receive standard email from
the list.

If someone would help or could forward this email to someone that can, I
would gretly appreciate it.

Thanks! - John

Thanks a bunch Flo! I looked through the [alphabetical] Debian Testing package
list and even Googled, but I had difficulty finding the actual package names.
I just now tried the Debian Package Search page, and that worked for 2/3 of the
ones above, but a newbie looking for HTML:Entities probably wouldn't have found
it even on the search page.

Everything I needed is installed now and working, and I'm back to using apt-get
whenever possible! ;-) - John

there is a message to please install Compress::Zlib. However, when I try to

I used the same technique to install Date::Manip and HTML::Entities without
error. What's wrong with installing Compress::Zlib? Thanks! - John

P.S. Debian Sarge - If I can install these three things with apt-get, what
are they called?

Someone's trying to connect to your machine on port 135. Isn't this the
port the RPC service on windows runs? Could be some virus trying to
find some Windows box.

Thanks - I do have one Windows box on my LAN - Here is another reason to
take it off. Actually, I can boot it into Linux and see if the problem goes
away. That other IP above is -not- the Windows box though. Maaybe
something's coming through the Windows box FROM that other IP? The Windows
box is connected to a NAT router connected to my main router that my
server's plugged into. It's a real pain because it's difficult to work in
the console when the screen is cluttered all the time with all those msgs.
FWIW, I didn't have those messages when I was using Debian Unstable with the
same firewall and router configuration. - John
