Brightness Control Hotkeys not working on Debian 12, Lenovo IdeaPad3

2024-09-19 Thread John Kerr Anderson
Dear Debian Users:

I recently got a Lenovo IdeaPad3 with an Intel i5 1135G7 CPU with Iris XE
graphics. I can adjust the screen brightness by manually sliding the
controls in the quick settings at the top of the screen, but the hotkeys on
the keyboard do not work to adjust the screen brightness. The hotkeys do
work for adjusting audio, airplane mode, locking the screen and turning the
touchpad on or off.

Any easy way to get the brightness controls to work?

Here's the output from: inxi -SGMz

Trackpad freezing in Bullseye on HP Laptop w/Celeron N4020 CPU

2021-10-09 Thread John Kerr Anderson
Hi Everyone,

I've got an HP laptop that is having a problem of the trackpad freezing
randomly when using the machine. If I plug an external mouse via USB or I
do a I can log back in and get the mouse working again.

It's annoying as it happens when you are working and is completely random
when it does this.

One message that comes up in the logs is :

i8042: PNP: PS/2 appears to have AUX port disabled, if this is incorrect
please boot with i8042.nopnp

cat /proc/bus/input/devices | grep -i touchpad
N: Name="SYNA3296:00 06CB:CD50 Touchpad"

Any suggestions on how I could get the mouse to not freeze randomly?

Thanks in advance,

John

No HDMI audio after system resume

2020-09-05 Thread John Kerr Anderson
Hi Everyone, I've got a mini PC that after the system resumes from suspend
it seems to have some problems with the audio working through HDMI. The
audio through the headphone jack continues to work.

If I reboot, the audio begins working through HDMI again.

Here's some information:
uname -v
#1 SMP Debian 4.19.132-1 (2020-07-24)

lspci -v | grep -i audio
00:0e.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation Device 3198 (rev 03)

sudo dmesg:

Any suggestions you could help me with in order to get the audio working
more reliably?

I added the line in /etc/grub.d/40_custom

snd_hda_intel.probe_mask=0x01

and updated grub but it hasn't resolved the issue.

Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks in advance

John

Re: No Audio after suspend on Lenovo Ideapad 130s Debian Buster

2019-08-20 Thread John Kerr Anderson
Thank you to everyone for your help! I just added the
"snd_hda_intel.probe_mask=0x01" permanently to grub and it seems to be
working fine.

It's actually preferable to not have the HDMI audio work because I'd
normally have plugged in speakers through the microphone anyway and this
way I don't have to change the audio settings every time. At least Jessie
would make me do that.

John

Re: No Audio after suspend on Lenovo Ideapad 130s Debian Buster

2019-08-19 Thread John Kerr Anderson
I tried the suggestions by Curt to add "snd_hda_intel.probe_mask=0x01" and
it seemed to work after boot.

Nektarios suggestion to run "alsactl init" which returned this:

Found hardware: "HDA-Intel" "Realtek ALC269VC"
"HDA:10ec0269,17aa380f,00100203 HDA:8086280d,80860101,0010" "0x17aa"
"0x3807"
Hardware is initialized using a generic method

"cat /proc/asound/cards" returned this:

 0 [PCH]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH
HDA Intel PCH at 0xa131 irq 130

Do I need to manually update Alsa to get the audio to work properly? Any
suggestions would be helpful, thank you everyone for their input.

John

Re: No Audio after suspend on Lenovo Ideapad 130s Debian Buster

2019-08-18 Thread John Kerr Anderson
Here is the output when it is working:

aplay -l
 List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC269VC Analog [ALC269VC Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 7: HDMI 1 [HDMI 1]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 8: HDMI 2 [HDMI 2]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 9: HDMI 3 [HDMI 3]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 10: HDMI 4 [HDMI 4]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

And here it is when it isn't working:

~$ aplay -l
 List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC269VC Analog [ALC269VC Analog]
  Subdevices: 0/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 7: HDMI 1 [HDMI 1]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 8: HDMI 2 [HDMI 2]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 9: HDMI 3 [HDMI 3]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 10: HDMI 4 [HDMI 4]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC269VC Analog [ALC269VC Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1

I notice when it's working the first entry says "Subdevices: 1/1" but after
I suspended the machine it says "Subdevices: 0/1"

Also after I bring it up from suspend I notice when I use the hotkeys to
adjust the volume it goes from the internal speakers to headphones. If I
plug headphones in I also don't have any audio either. Any suggestions on
what I should do now? Thank you for the response so far!

Regards,

John

Are there any suggestions I could try to get this to work correctly after

Bluetooth Internet Tethering, Using Phone as a Modem in Jessie

2015-05-12 Thread John Kerr Anderson
Hello all,

I recently upgraded my HP mini from Debian Wheezy to Jessie. In Debian
Wheezy the bluetooth manager had an easy setting when you set up a
bluetooth phone. It would ask if you wanted to set up mobile broadband with
the phone. Unfortunately, in Jessie I cannot figure out a way to do the
same thing.

I have been using the Gnome desktop in both versions and am using the
classic version in Jessie as I have a netbook with little resources. I am
using the x86 version too, my phone is a Nokia running Symbian S40. If
there is anyway you can point me in the right direction I would be very
grateful! Any questions please let me know, thank you all in advance!

Kind Regards,

John Anderson

What exactly do you see in syslog? SIGHUP?

OK this is some of the output from the syslog. I have phoned my ISP on
several occaisions and they are convinced there is some sort of software
setting causing the modem to break the connection. They are telling me
that the connection is being shut off on my end, as if I told the modem
to disconnect. I tried using the windoze computer and it connects
happily, but the two Debian Etch computers refuse to stay on for more
than a couple minutes if I am lucky

I have tried different modem strings, disconnecting phones, since at
first I thought it was a problem with the line. Again, any help would
be useful!

Modem connection dropping Debian Etch

2007-01-26 Thread John Kerr Anderson
Hello everyone,

I have a very annoying problem. I am trying to download some new
programs via aptitude and notice that my modem connection keeps dropping
out after 5 - 10 minutes. The connection keeps dropping esp. if I try
to check a web-page out while it is downloading in aptitude.

At first I thought it was a modem problem or something. The first
machine is a built computer AMD64 3500+ with USR 56 Courier modem the
other machine is a Thinkpad R60 with internal soft modem. Both machines
run Debian Etch with kernel level 2.6.18 (i386) on AMD machine and
2.6.17 on thinkpad.

Of course I had another windoze machine and it seemed to work OK... In
both instances it seems that the disconnect occurs whilst running
aptitude to download files... Not 100% sure though :(

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!

Sincerely,

John Anderson

onboard audio problems with Connectland USB web cam Debian Etch

2006-10-24 Thread John Kerr Anderson
Hello everyone,

I have an AMD64 desktop PC running Debian Etch for amd64. The on-board
uses the standard Intel ICH driver in alsa. If I try booting the
computer with the Connectland USB web-cam... the built-in audio (a
microphone) interferes with the onboard audio. The only solution I have
found is to leave the web-cam unplugged until it is fully booted.

The machine is running kernel version 2.6.16-2-amd64-k8. Having the
webam's microphone work is not necessary. If you have any suggestions
on how I could keep the webcam plugged in and not interfere with my
on board audio I would greatly appreciate it!

Sincerely,

John Anderson

Opening a port on Ipmasq

2006-07-26 Thread John Kerr Anderson

Hi Everyone!

I have been a very happy user of the Ipmasq program for many years. It
has allowed me to very easily setup a home network that doesn't require a

router.

However, I recently bought a webcam which I use on a networked computer
running Debian testing. The server runs Sarge at this point. I am using
the aMSN program and when I start it up and try to connect my webcam it
says that I am behind a firewall. It says I need some ports opened so I can
let other users see my cam.

The aMSN documentation says I need to setup up the following "port
forwarding:"

Application:aMSN
Start: 6890
End:6900
Protocol: Both (TCP & UDP)
IP: xxx.xxx.x.xxx
Enabled:X YES

Do you have any suggestions on how I can configure it to allow these ports
so my webcam will work properly? Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thank you

John

Sabrent SBT-WC3L spca5xx driver

2006-07-26 Thread John Kerr Anderson

Hi everyone,

Was wondering if any of you can help me out... Tired of Xubuntu Dapper on
my PC decided to do a fresh install using the 22 July daily image of
Debian Testing for AMD64. Everything has been working well, much better
than the former OS :-) Way to go Debian as usual!

My only problem is I bought a new webcam recently, an inexpensive Sabrent
SBT-WC3L http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16830194001 I
saw that it had support in Linux and didn't want to spend a lot. It
worked OK in Xubuntu Dapper... Getting it to work in Debian has been a
little more of a challenge. I discovered the device uses a spca5xx
driver, so I went into aptitude and installed the kernel module for amd64
2.16.2 generic... tried to install driver in modconf and it didn't work.
So I decided to go with the amd64 k8 kernel and the spca5xx module for
amd64 k8... rebooted, run modconf and received this message:

---

Installing module spca5xx. If the device isn't there, or isn't configured
correctly, this could cause your system to pause for up to a minute.

FATAL: Error inserting spca5xx
(/lib/modules/2.6.16-2-amd64-k8/kernel/drivers/usb/media/spca5xx.ko):
Invalid module format

Installation failed.
Architecture-specific modutils configuration for x86_64 not found, using
defaults

Please press ENTER when you are ready to continue.

Is there anyway anyone can help me with getting this module to work? I
really don't want to recompile my kernel, I have not had good luck with
that in recent years and found that usually I am OK with the stock
kernels. If anyone has any advice on this subject I would be very
greatful.

Thank you,

John Anderson

xprt print.org printing and firefox debian sarge

2004-12-08 Thread John Kerr Anderson
Hi,
I've noticed this annoying "problem" with the xprt printing in mozilla
firefox. I have 3 printers, and instead of going to the default laser it
wants to print to my inkjet instead as the 1st option.

Is there anyway, to change the order it appears from the print menu? Some
users will accidently print because the inkjet appears 1st. I found
something on the XPRt site but I couldn't get it to work. :-(

Any help would be appreciated... thanks in advance. :-)

flphoto and usb permissions

2004-10-01 Thread John Kerr Anderson
Hi,
I have a fresh install of Debian sarge for a intel pentium iii machine. I
have a Kodak CX6200 digital camera that I was able to get working only
with flphoto. I created an alien package from the rpm on the flphoto
website.

The problem I'm having is I can access the camera's photos for root,
however, a regular user cannot access the camera. The camera is
recognised, but not accessible.

I have the hotplug package and even installed usb-perms, but I still have
the same problem. If anyone can give me some pointers on how to get the
camera accessible to users other than root I would be very appreciative.

Sarge testing 2.6 boot problems

2004-05-18 Thread John Kerr Anderson
Hello,
I've tried installing a custom modularised kernel version 2.6.5 on Debian
Sarge testing. I'm using ext3 filesystem and compiled it directly into
the kernel along with ReiserFS sypport (I read you need it in order to
avoid an initrd image).

Everytime it tries to boot the new kernel I get the following error:
VFS: Cannot open root device "301" on unknown-block(3,1)
Please append a correct "root" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(3,1)
The hard disk partition used for booting is /dev/hda1 which is specified
in Lilo. I originally used Grub and experienced the same exact problem.

I've compiled my own kernels before but never 2.6 series and never with
this many problems... I seems to be that its some sort of file system
error message, but I don't know what. I've tried everything. The
motherboard is an Intel 845WN.

If anyone can shed some light on this situation I would be very happy!
:-)

Cheers,
John Kerr Anderson

Recommended ISP's

2004-01-18 Thread John Kerr Anderson
Hi everybody!

We've been using SBC Yahoo Dsl, but were so outraged at their arrogance,
poor quality service, and lack of support that we decided to cancel. Can
anyone recommend an ISP that is actually good?

We're thinking of switching to charter cable internet, but rumour is
they're partnered with Micro$oft. Any recommendations???

We would like something that is high-speed if possible such as DSL/cable,
we live in mid-Michigan.

Thanks in advance!

ipmasq 3.5.10c problems

2003-09-30 Thread John Kerr Anderson
Hi,

I recently upgraded to the ipmasq version 3.5.10c because of security
risks through apt-get upgrade. The problem is, now there is no working IP
masquerading.

when I issue the command: < dpkg-reconfigure ipmasq>

Initializing IP Masquerading...iptables: No chain/target/match by that
name
done.
Loading IP Masquerade kernel modules...done.
minikerr:/home/difrentptofvue#

Even though I have all of the appropriate modules installed in the kernel.

Additionally my system log is bombarded with the following:

IN=ppp0 OUT=eth0 SRC=206.141.192.60 DST=192.168.1.5 LEN=139 TOS=0x00
PREC=0x00 TTL=244 ID=5734 DF PROTO=UDP SPT=53 DPT=1366 LEN=119
minikerr:/home/di

The DST address is my client machine trying to reach the internet.

Can anyone help me with this issue? I really need my other computer to
access the internet. :-(((

Thanks in advance...

ppp0 as default?

Hi,

I have a machine that has been on an ethernet network, but is being
switched to a standalone dialup computer. I cannot tell the computer to

I issue the command but everytime I reconnect, it

What command can I issue that will tell the computer to use ppp0 as
default??? I tried playing with the option, but claims I need an IP

XFce panel problems

2003-06-05 Thread John Kerr Anderson
Hello,

I've installed the XFce environment for my Debian 3.0 machine, but I
cannot get the CDE-like menu to appear. I have read earlier posts that
mention you must edit the ~/.xfce/xfwm-session file. I edit the file and
nothing changes in the desktop. When I go back to look at the file
again, the settings are already changed to the "default" again.

Does anyone have any types of suggestions that would help me get the menu
panel to appear???

Thanks in advance! :-)

Re: real player plugin only as root

2003-01-02 Thread John Kerr Anderson
Thank you Aryan!

I changed the permissions and it seems to be working more or less...

One thing I read was sometimes the files and must
be manually installed in the netscape or mozilla plugins directory. Maybe
that is the problem with your setup. But, you did mention that it is
loaded. I would just make sure those two files are in your mozilla
*plugins* directory.

Good luck :-)

Yamaha CDR not working

2002-03-28 Thread John Kerr Anderson
Hello,

I have been trying to get a Yamaha CDR drive working using kernel 2.2.18
in a 2.2 version of Potato. I added SCSI support in the kernel, it comes
up as recognised. I also put the append statement in lilo (I don't use a
modular kernel). I have had the drive working before, but reinstalled
Debian on it. I tried the link statement for the CD-Writer HOWTO:

cd /dev/ && rm cdrom && ln -s scd0 cdrom

When I try to mount the cd rom the following error results:

mount: /dev/cdrom is not a valid block device

Can anyone help?

PS please send correspondonce to my address because for some reason I
cannot subscribe to this list. After sendiing a confirmation e mail
nothing comes back.

Thanks in advance

connecting MS-Win 2000 client to Linux server via ppp null modem

2001-09-29 Thread John Kerr Anderson
Has anyone been successful on connecting a MS-Windows 2000 computer to a
Linux server via ppp null modem? I have consulted the serial lap link
howto and PPP howto.

I keep on getting a message from my Linux computer that the connection is
not 8 bit clean. I cannot find anyway to change the word size on the
MS-Win computer. If I type "CLIENT" in the terminal window of the Windows
client the Linux server claims that a PPP connection is made, but ifconfig
says there is no connection. I never get to a point where authentication
takes place.

Any help would be gladly appreciated!

setting up an RARP server

2001-05-07 Thread John Kerr Anderson
I am trying to set up rarp on an Intel PC to boot a Sun Sparcstation via
Ethernet. When I try to issue the command:

kerr:/home/jkanders# rarp -s 200.17.212.11 36:a0:99:45:f0:48
SIOCSRARP: Invalid argument
kerr:/home/jkanders#

The documentation from the Debian Sparc Installation notes, explains that
the above warning message is because RARP is not compiled into the kernel.
The only thing in the kernel configuration (v.2.4.0) that I could find
about RARP, is for a client set up and not a Server set up. Any
suggestions. :-)

Note: please forward any correspondence directly to me, since I don't
currently belong to this list.

Thanks in advance.

Re: changing console framebuffer modes

2001-04-30 Thread John Kerr Anderson
This is what happens when I try to run the commands:

fbset 640x480-72

error message: ioctl FBIOPUT_VSCREENINFO: Invalid argument

or

fbset --all 640-480-72 gives the same exact error message.

Is there something that is not set up properly? Any suggestions would be
helpful! :-)

changing console framebuffer modes

2001-04-29 Thread John Kerr Anderson
Hi,

I have an IBM PC 350 w/S3 Trio 64 video chip-set running Debian 2.2 and
kernel version 2.4.0. I have the frame buffer device activated but would
like a higher refresh rate than 60 Hz. I read the man pages for
and with no luck on how to change the refresh
rate/resolution. I noticed in the file there are several
generic console modes. How can I tell fbset to utilise the modes in
?

Re: Anyone successful w/Genpower & Tripp lite UPS?

2001-03-29 Thread John Kerr Anderson
I have successfully installed powstatd, and now have working UPS
protection with the standard "Tripplite Internet Office 500 UPS" settings.
Thank you. I have been fiddling with this thing for days without any
luck (until now).

Anyone successful w/Genpower & Tripp lite UPS?

2001-03-28 Thread John Kerr Anderson
I have a Tripp Lite Office Professional 500 and I have tried setting it up
with a variety of programs, the software that comes with it does not work
on Debian. Everything seems to point to using Genpower, but I'm not sure
how to configure it right. Any suggestions?

start up script operation

2001-03-18 Thread John Kerr Anderson
Hello,

I have entered a start up script named in the /etc/init.d
directory. I issued the command which seemed to work OK. When I restarted the computer
the changes (starting hdparm & changing the text mode screen colours with
setterm) failed to change the settings. Is there something I'm doing
wrong? Do I need a separate file for each command? Any help would be
appreciated! :-)

Here is my sysint file:

# speeds up I/O for the hard disk
/sbin/hdparm -c3 -A1 -m8 /dev/hda

# these commands change the text consoles into blue background and white
# foreground screen colours.
/usr/bin/setterm -background blue -foreground white
/usr/bin/setterm -store

Kernel problems

2001-01-23 Thread John Kerr Anderson
No matter what I do, I cannot boot my PC off the hard disk. I updated to
kernel 2.4 which worked fine until I tried to recompile the kernel again.
I made a boot diskette which works fine, although I have the same boot
kernel on the hard disk, which won't boot.

I receive a message of garbage across the screen which start with:

Re: Moving from RedHat to Debian

1999-12-26 Thread John Kerr Anderson
I myself have just recently started to switch from Redhat to Debian. I
have found that Debian has a lot of useful features, but with those is
complexity. It seems to me as harder to setup than Redhat. I have tried
the ftp install and it is very good, but still slow especially if you
would be downloading a large package.

If you go to the website they offer a 2 CD-ROM
set of Debian for 3.95 (+5.30 S & H) 9.25 total. That might be useful if
you run into problems or want to install it on other machines. It will
also save you a lot of time.

ADDS 1010 terminal installation in Debian 2.1

1999-12-25 Thread John Kerr Anderson
I am trying to connect a terminal to my PC running Debian 2.1.

I added the following line to my /etc/inittab file:

My terminal is in the Adds viewpoint 3a+ personality, set for FDX, set for
9600 baud, connected to the PC using a standard modem cable.

After I added the line in /etc/inittab I saved and exited and issued the
command , no error messages resulted, but no login prompt on
terminal either.

Do I have to edit more files in order to get a login prompt on the
terminal? Will a standard modem cable work?
