Go return that video card and exchange it for an ATI Radeon, for which there are better drivers, as well as open source drivers for the Radeon that Just Work, and work way better than nVidia's proprietary hack. I use the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run installer from NVidea and just had to execute their instructions, by the letter and everything runs OK. I don't know about Moz/Thunderbird for sure, but Sylpheed handles this nicely. You get an easy drop-down menu to choose the account when you compose a message. And if you use procmail or Sylpheed's built-in filtering to sort mail to different folders, you can set which account is the default based on the folder. I looked briefly, but didn't see any obvious way to do this in Thunderbird. I haven't tried it as I don't have two ISP's accounts on my cable connection and I don't want to be using a dialup acount just to test it, but I am pretty shure (on Mozzilla - I use 1.5) that you only have to configure accounts - in the Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings - using the add accounts tab and you can download the messages corresponding to the intended account choosing from the dropdown on the GetMsgs button. Similarly I expect it will be a simillar dropdown in the Send button when compose a message, letting you choose the account you want it to send with. Let us know if this would be right ... I've been looking for something in the chain of xdm files that would specify an incorrect keyboard and hadn't actually considered the xfree86... So, if that's where the keyboard would be configured, I can go in and rerun the config program to redo that file... Maybe! At least it's something to try! Well, if you want to do it by hand (and shure this is the best way to learn), you can edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and fidle with one the sections that says "input device" and then has a mention to keyboard. To be able to do that you might want to use : #nano /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 (note you have to do it as root or you wont be able to right to the file) If you don't succeed you might want to try this tip I got from this M.L. : "...installing "hotplug", "mdetect" and "read-edid" before X will enable it to auto-detect most everything for you anyway." Re: apt-getting source for my kernel
I need to compile the nic driver for my Broadcom bcm4401. I have the source but it needs the kernel source. I installed from disk 5 which means I have kernel 2.4.18-bf2.4. I tried apt-getting kernel-source-2.4.18-bf2.4 and was told it doesn't exist. Where are you trying to gett it from? (the lines in your sources.list) How are you doing it? Are you shure it is that kernel? Did you try uname -r in a terminal to check it? John -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I discovered that unilike what many people told me I don't need to rebuild the kernel. Yes, of course, if you have the needed module on sources, just compile it, install it (/lib/modules/2.4.18-bf2.4/kernel/drivers/net - use the apropriate kernel name) and put the module name in the file /etc/modules . I also need to figure out why X isn't working. There is also no mouse detection. Whenever I boot it it tries to start X. Several error messages. This is a hassle. Before I do anything else I'd like to stop this. I know it has something to to with something called "runlevel" What do I put in what file to change this. Edit /etc/inittab and look for this : # The default runlevel. id:2:initdefault: Change the runlevel 2 to 1 and you will be on single user ( no X ). Re: 2.4.18bf24 kernel and APM question
Keith Hooper wrote: OK I've got Debian Woody 3.0 installed on my old Toshiba Tecra 700ct laptop. Took some tinkering but I've got it fully functional. I originally installed it with the 2.4.18bf24 stock kernel that came with Woody. Everything worked though I had to add one tweak to get the pcmcia to work. Now I upgraded and compiled my own custom 2.4.22 (and a test 2.4.19 with same results) kernel. I did this because the bf24 kernel tries to load a scsi driver that conflicts with the scsi controller on the deskstation V that I also have. Now The new kernel fixed the problem with the pcmcia (don't need the fix I used with 2.4.18bf) but now the apm doesn't power down the laptop with shutdown. I've done quite a bit of digging and have found that at sometime the apm module in the kernels no longer powers down machines as a feature. And I've looked at both the bf24 kernel config file from Woody and my custom 2.4.22 config file and all the apm features are set identically. So I have a couple questions. Has anyone got a possible work-around for this to get apm to power down again? And what did the developers do to get the 2.4.18bf24 kernel to power down machines with apm? Did they have to patch the kernel with a special apm patch or was powerdown still available with the 2.4.18 kernel and they lost it when the 2.4.19 kernel came out? I don't even know where to find this info. Keith, I may not be able to help you more than this but I can tell you that my 2.4.22 kernel is using APM and is doing power down just fine. I am going to atach the config file and maybe you can sort out what is wrong with your configuration or if it is a bug or incompatibility with your laptop (they are allways harder to properly configure). You can also use lspci as a command to see info on the pci devices and there you will have a line like this : 00:09.0 Unknown mass storage controller: Promise Technology, Inc. 20268 (rev 01) So, now what you have to verify is if your kernel suports this driver - pdc20268 . At the terminal issue the command uname -a and see wich kernel is in use. Mine is like this : Linux peterpan 2.4.22.281003 #1 Tue Oct 28 12:12:30 WET 2003 i686 GNU/Linux wich means that I am using a 2.4.22 kernel ( the rest of the numbering is the date of the build). If you have a 2.4.18 or later you are OK .Now you just have to see if you have the kernel sources installed - go to /usr/src/ and see if they are there . If they are there or not I advice you first to read and put on paper this document : http://newbiedoc.sourceforge.net/system/kernel-pkg.html You will need it to help you getting everything you need to choose what modules and how to recompile the kernel (the one you have or a new one). After that carefull reading you are now able to go into the kernel - cd /usr/src/linux and do a make menuconfig Then scroll down until ATA/IDE/MFM/RLL support, then to IDE ATA and ATAPI Block devices and then enable (as a module - you don't need it in the kernel because it's not your boot drive) Promise PDC202{68|69|70|71|75|76|77} support . Then follow all the instructions to build the kernel . After everything is done you just have to put your module in the /etc/modules file ( please check in your /lib/modules/"kernel number" to see the exact name of the module - I think it should be pdc202xx ).It would be a good idea to issue the commands (under root ) depmod -a and update-modules . I hope this is not to much at a time for you. If you have never compiled a kernel this is a good reason to try it - if you follow all the instructions on that document you will succeed . If I forgot something, my apologies - someone will correct me, I am shure. Good luck ! John -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? I'd advise against compiling a new kernel at this stage, but I don't know which suggestions you have deemed hard. Here's the story. I installed with disk 1 and my onboard Broadcom 4401 nic isn't supported. I asked on this list for help and was told by numerous people that later kernels supported it and that I should get the latest and compile it. I thought that this was excessively geeky since I had managed to install support for this card as a module under Redhat. But I figured that I might learn something. Anyway this has been a huge pain in the ass since the machine has no networking and consequently no apt-get (which I've been led to believe is a package retreiver). After burning a bunch of CD's I finally got all the requirements installed and installed and compiled 2.4.22. I then made and make installed the module. Now I need to know what lines I have to add to what files to get the module working. Well, now it's easy - just edit /etc/modules and add the name of the compiled module. It will be loaded at boot from then on. Cheers John -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Apparently the PCI bus is getting confused somehow. You might want to go into the BIOS and temporarily disable the built-in serial ports, and see what that does for you. I have sent the requested message to the sourceforge.net. with a cc to this list. Why are you trying to transfer dmesg to floppy? Without knowing the exact command you used, as whom, in what directory, it's hard to say what might have gone wrong with your copy attempt. Because somewhere in the diddleing I came across dmesg as the log file which I didnt know and thought it might have something that would help. But I'm unsure why you'd want to copy it to floppy. If you need it in a file form, you can: dmesg > dmesg.txt and then copy dmesg.txt to wherever you want it, including floppy. If you just want to see the dmesg messages, you can: dmesg | more I need to transport stuff to windows to make a hard copy &/or to include in an emale. Floppy is the only way I have to do that. What happens with the command: echo "ATDT555-1234" > /dev/ttyS3 Nothing absolutely nothing and I can hear my modem sending. Dont have another number I can call. This I don't understand; you say it's doing "nothing absolutely nothing" and then immediately say you hear the modem sending, which means it's doing something. Either it's doing nothing or it's doing something. Which is it? How about: When and if the modem dials my ISP I can hear The modem output untill a connection is made. I can assure you the modem is doing nothing on either ttys3 or ttys4. I also assume you didn't really use the bogus number "555-1234"? You want to use a real number, say to your cell phone, or a second line, or to the local time & temperature (I didn't say that - no one can prove I did) and listen to the modem speaker for the time/temp announcement. If this works, that means the computer is seeing your modem, your modem is seeing the phone line, and the modem can dial out. I used both the bogus number and my ISP's number & nothing happened. I dont think the modem is smart enough to know wheather the number is valid or not and a busy signal or error message from SBC is good enough. By the way the town is too small for time & temp and cell phone service stops at my frount door. Outside it works inside forget it. -- Kent What program generated the connection between the modem's 8 I/O lines d000-d007 and /dev/ttyS3 and what would happen if I rm /dev/ttyS4 and maybe /dev/ttyS3 as well and remade, with MAKEDEV, ttyS3 and then run the program that makes the original connection. Regards; Hoyt I think it would be a good idea if you would try a diferent aproach. Since you have some problems configuring it by hand, I suggest using kppp wich is a very nice and userfriendly interface for configuring modems and serial line connections. In the times I used the phone line I used it and it would work on first time ever ! Try it - apt-get install kppp ( I hope you have KDE, I don't kow if it will run as a standallone...) Gaim depends on libc6 - libc6 in sid now depends on the package currenty known as linux-kernel-headers. The 'odd-looking' version number doesn't need to match your running kernel because this package contains private headers for libc6, which originated from the kernel; rather than anything tied to the kernel you are running. Some people are currently debating whether or not calling this package linux-kernel-headers is too confusing. -- Jon Dowland http://jon.dowland.name/ --- End Message ---

Gaim needs kernel-headers ?
Hello all I would like to understand why, if someone has the time to explain it ... I have Sarge and 2.4.22 kernel ( installed and configured by me from sources). I allready had installed gaim_0.72-1 wich was compiled from sources and a .deb produced with Checkinstall . No kernel headers where needed - perhaps because it was built against the installed kernel? Now I removed (purged) the installed version, changed the distro in sources.list to sid and installed the very same version of gaim but it installed linux-kernel-headers for the 2.5.999 version - does this just mean it was built with this kernel ?And does it really need them ( the headers) ? I am sure you have heard of welcha and blaster, been there done that, they dont ask permission. Maybe you dont understand what I, and others, want. Idealy if the gui login screen added 3 items it would solve a lot of problems and would not incur any security risks. 1. Reboot (If I want to go to Windows) 2. Shutdown (If I want to go to bed) 3. Text mode.(If I want to do something as root) I have been reading this thread and I find all this very strange. I installed Debian base (network install) and then went to Sarge . Installed X, KDM and KDE and I have all that I used to have in other distros - I can do all that you mention and more ! There may be ways not to have it like that but I have and didn't have to configure anything! My login GUI even present you with clickcable icons (pictures) for you to select whatever user / root you want with a single click ( no need to write the actual name ). And for the really lasy and don't-care-about-login-stuff guys you can configure the GUI to do an auto-login! I don't know what else you may require - it will hardly wash your car ... Incidently Cntl-alt-del doesnt work from gnome. I expected it would. Neither does from KDE but you can use cntl-alt-backspace and go to login screen and then choose whatever is that you wish . And pressing cntrl-alt-F1 goes to you first tty , cntrl-alt-F2 to the second, until cntrl-alt-F7 that gets you back on X ( where you were in the first place ). Problems building Gaim
I would like to install gaim from unstablle.I am on testing. I edited my sources.list to reflect unstable sources( also added stable ), main, contrib and non-free Then I did : apt-get update apt-get build-dep gaim and I get the error: E: Build-Depends dependency for gaim cannot be satisfied because no available versions of package libperl-dev can satisfy version requirements I tried and took a look on aptitude and there I have gaim1:0.64-3 and gaim-gnome, a virtual pachage containing gaim1:0.70-1.backports.org.1. If I call the dependencies on it I'll get an unavailable libperl5.6(>=5.6.1-8.3) and a sugestion for gnome-panel or kicker docker higher then the ones I can install ( of course, this is sarge).I do have libperl5.8.0-18 ( and -dev ) My question is, how do I satisfy the anavailable dependency matter? I am very new to Debian and I am still trying to seek my way around things. Thank you for helping . John -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble?
