New kernel does not install
Hi I've installed Debian stable, the kernel is 2.6.8. Next, I download kernel headers and source for 2.6.8. I copy the /boot/config... to /usr/src/kernel-source directory as .config. I do a make menuconfig and exit with no changes. Then I make a new kernel-image with: make-kpkg --rootcmd fakeroot --append-to-version -jp --revision 01 kernel_image This should make a kernel identical to the one installed. I then install the kernel with: dpkg -i kernel-image...deb The new kernel cannot boot. The kernel installed can still boot. What is the problem? Thanks! I can see the first SATA drive with dmesg, but now it cannot see the CD drive that I booted from :( With the standard boot (2.4.47) this is not a problem. As far as I can see, the 2.6 boot process cannot find the IRQs for the ide devices. Have you had a similar problem? John -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". How to install on SATA drives?
Hi I have a Fujitsu-Siemens (Econel 50, Intel based) server with two SATA drives. The standard installation images (.iso files) cannot recognize the drives. I believe that it does not contain the the libata and and sata_sil modules and that is the reason. How do I make a new installation CD with those modules included? The modules are included in the 2.4.47 (and later) kernel. Thanks! John -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Courier debugging
Hi I'm trying to setup Courier with authentication through mysql. So far I can get in contact with the pop3 server with "telnet 110". The log says: Dec 24 16:28:26 lola courierpop3login: Connection, ip=[:::192.168.0.8] Dec 24 16:28:33 lola courierpop3login: LOGIN FAILED, ip=[:::192.168.0.8] This was also in the log: Dec 24 20:03:54 lola authdaemond.mysql: authdaemon: modules="authmysql", daemon\s=5 With a "telnet localhost 110" I get in contact with the pop3 server. The login and password can be entered, but not accepted. As I use mysql, it should be in the mysql log that courier had tried to lookup the id/password, but there are no entries in the log file. Do you have an idea about some way that I can proceed to see where the problem is? Some way to debug? apcupsd: How to make the shutdown?
Hi I've tried to make apcupsd (version 3.6.2) do the shutdown of the server when power fails. It didn't work. The status reported seems ok, though. I've tried a lot of different combinations of options, but apcupsd does not invoke /usr/sbin/powersc (except during INIT) at all. This is how the daemon can do its actions. Anyone had succes with apcupsd ? Please copy me on e-mail too: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> -- John Plate

Moving passwd/shadow file
Hi I've noticed that the SAME password on two different Linux systems are encoded differently so that if user "" uses password "" on two Linux systems, the encoding is different in each /etc/shadow file. This implies that in case of a crash, user accounts cannot easily be moved to another machine. Problem with X and ViRGE card
Hi I have an AOpen 3D Artist PT70 video card based on the ViRGE/DX chip. I can start the svga xserver and it seems to work. After selecting "exit" with the mouse, the xserver terminates and leaves the console corrupted. About every second character is visible. Apparently the video card has been confused.
