You might want to try `aptitude` instead of `apt`: it will try to offer
ways to fix the problem (by removing&upgrading&downgrading package).
The solutions it offers can sometimes take a long time to come up
(because it performs a search through a large search tree), and it may
have effects you won't like, so carefully review the solutions proposed.

I'd like to check two things:

If both are true, I'd like to add the given path to the $PATH variable.

I can add the given path, and test for the existence of the given path.
I can write expressions that work to detect the given path in $PATH.
What I don't seem able to do is combine all that in a script.

Here's what I have for the script:

#!/bin/bash

# A short script for testing some code.

# pelican seems to like local installations here.
SUBSTR="${HOME}"/\.local/bin/
echo Substr is "${SUBSTR}"
# if [[ ! ${PATH} =~ .*/home/charles/.local/bin.* ]] ; then
if [[ $( echo "$PATH" | grep -E -v "${SUBSTR}" ) ]] ; then
 echo Substring NOT found.;

 if [ -d "${HOME}/.local/bin/" ] ; then
 echo Adding to \$PATH
 PATH=${HOME}/.local/bin:$PATH
 fi
else
 echo Substring found!;
fi

I call the script with the . operator: ". test.sh"

this is the result:

root@primergy:~/software-env# . test.sh

Substr is /root/.local/bin/
Substring NOT found.
root@primergy:~/software-env#

Why do I always end up adding the given path, even if it is already in
$PATH?

Debian is Buster, bash is 5.0.3(1)-release (x86_64-pc-linux-gnu).

This is a really powerful indicator that you've mixed sources which
are either from, or for, different Debian releases. Or mixed Debian
sources and non-Debian sources.

The "libc6 (>= 2.27)" dependency is identical to the libc6 dependency
on the *buster* (Debian 10) version of libavcodec58. (Which is a
package that does not even exist in Debian 9.) So, it looks like you've
either got a buster (Debian 10) source, or you've got some third-party
source that was meant to be used with Debian 10.

You can't use Debian 10 sources on Debian 9.

this really seems to be the clue, however: how do I get

1. information on the installed packages?

2. repair my situation - I cannot go to Debian 10 right now (I posted
the reason somewhere here - mouse ist awfully slow and jumpy))

This is not the current stable release. You may wish to *consider*
upgrading, as running older releases tends to be incompatible with
the desire to install recent versions of web browsers, video players,
and other large and complicated packages.

The OP says:

Not being the current release seems neither here nor there.

We shall see.

I have a theory that they tried to add buster sources (or
buster-backports, or some third-party repository meant for buster)
because they wanted newer stuff than was available in stretch or
stretch-backports.  Frankendebian ensued.

Frankendebian???

yes I know, however I am running a rather old machine (TX 100 S1 from

Need help with ffmpeg installation - strange behaviour of my system - am I correct here?

2021-07-09 Thread Joerg Kampmann
Hello - I tried to install ffmpeg (a normal Debian package) and got some
strange messages. the ffmpeg-group adviced me to go to a Debian group. I
hope I am correct here in this group.

I am running Debian 9 on a Fujitsu TX 100 S1 computer ...

/base) joerg@primergy:~$ uname -a

Here is the dialogue I had in the *ffmpeg*-group;

I did some further research with live-CD's, as well with x86 as amd64:
Results on both versions:

mouse behaves normal after booting system and log in (when no application runs)
- first thing I saw was:

"*Oh no, something has gone wrong*" (I think this is no problem) so I continued
and got the normal
user screen. I pressed right button for settings:

The mouse was a bit jumping and when I moved to the group of background
pictures (via click) the
mouse from picture to picture (from one background picture to the neighbouring one) is
"sticky".
this occurs on each "border" of the pictures.

Then I started an application.

I chose Firefox as application and started it. here the mouse was more or less
fixed ... also
keyboard typing was not possible. The mouse behaved as if stuck to the mousepad.

Then I started another application:
the mouse disappeared when moved from neutral background to the window of the
application.

I have the impression the applications hinder the mouse to move. could this be
a priority problem?

kind regards
Jörg

Hello list, I did some further research. In particular I used the
live-ISO-image of Buster (amd64) on DVD and bootet the system. And I
found the following:

Mouse still is irrational. It works fine, when no application has
startet after logging. When then an application is started (in this case
firefox of the DVD) the mouse mostly does not move. It jumps. And when
there is a button something similar, the mouse behaves even worse. I did
not dig into the "InputClass" because I did not find it.

So any help is urgently needed.

In the meantime I found xinput and installed it. Good tool. But things go slow
due to lack of time. I will come back a bit
later.===Von meinem Samsung Gerät

thanks a lot
In order to test your suggestions I tried them under Debian 9 -
  32-Bit -  however these programs do not exist on my debian 9  -
  neither xinput and for libinput I found:

  bash: libinput: Kommando nicht gefunden.  #--- command not
found
  root@primergy:/home/kampmann# whereis libinput
  libinput: /usr/share/man/man4/libinput.4.gz

Any ideas?

Mouse awfully slow on Debian 10 on certain machines

2020-04-29 Thread Jörg Kampmann

Hello list,

I installed Debian 10 on my Fujitsu TX 100 S1 (64 and 32 Bit possible)
with debian 64. After that I observed: the mouse pointer is awfully
slow. Therefore I went back to Debian 9 32-bit.

On a HP-Pavillon 64-bit Debian 10 works just fine.

Anybody knows about this problem? What can I do?
