unresolved symbols error messages on startup

2001-03-13 Thread Keith & Cecile Schooley
After compiling a kernel (2.2.17) for the first time, I received a string of
error messages on module autodetect: "Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules
" (lists several modules).

I don't have any modules compiled into the kernel (although I do have the
possibility of module dependency enabled). I did run make modules and make
modules_install anyway, hoping that that would resolve the problem, but it
had no effect.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

AWE 32 not recognized

2001-03-13 Thread Keith & Cecile Schooley
After compiling a kernel (2.2.17) for the first time, the startup sequence
initialized Soundblaster at io 220 and 330, irq 1 and 5 (which is what it
runs at under Windows), but then said "AWE 32 not recognized." I still
don't have sound. (Compiled SB and PNP into the kernel.)

I'm trying to avoid using isapnp tools, because I understand that they have
trouble with AWE 32 anyway, and on an earlier attempt, pnpdump didn't
recognize my sound card at all.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

kerneld error message on startup

2001-03-13 Thread Keith & Cecile Schooley
After compiling a kernel (2.2.17) for the first time, I received a startup
message indicating that I was using kerneld and almost certainly didn't want
to. I don't know how I turned it on, so I don't know how to turn it off.

I have enabled kmod in the kernel, but don't understand how to set it up
from Documentation/kmod.txt (refers to a directory that doesn't exist in my
setup).

All this should be academic, since I'm actually not using modules at all,
but I'd like to get rid of the error message.

Thanks,

Keith

first shot at compiling a kernel

2001-03-11 Thread Keith & Cecile Schooley
I tried compiling a kernel (2.2.17) for the first time. It compiled,
rebooted, and generally worked okay, but there were a few problems

1) I received a startup message indicating that I was using kerneld and
almost certainly didn't want to. I don't know how I turned it on, so I
don't know how to turn it off.

2) It initialized Soundblaster at io 220 and 330, irq 1 and 5 (which is
what it runs at under Windows), but then said "AWE 32 not recognized." I
still don't have sound. (Compiled SB and PNP into the kernel.)

3) I received a string of error messages on module autodetect (need to
rerun startup sequence to get the exact message). I don't have any modules
compiled into the kernel (although I do have the possibility of module
dependency enabled). Do I have to compile modules anyway, even though I'm
not using any? Or are the old modules from the generic kernel causing the
problem?

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Grace and peace,

Keith

Missing /lib/modules/2.2.17 file

2001-03-06 Thread Keith & Cecile Schooley
In the process of compiling a new kernel, I renamed my /lib/modules/2.2.17
file. I won't take you along the convoluted process that made me think that
that was a good idea. Anyway ...

I can't boot up. I keep getting an endless series of messages that
/lib/modules/2.2.17 can't be accessed because it isn't there. Is there
anything analogous to Windows' "safe mode" that could get me into the system
just enough to get to /lib/modules/2.2.17-old and change it back?

Boot floppy doesn't work; it just gets me to the same point. Any
suggestions before I decide to re-install?

Thanks,

Keith

Re: SiS 5597/5598 Video Card

2001-02-05 Thread Keith & Cecile Schooley
You got me on the right track. Xserver-svga was the right driver, but since
anXious (in the setup program) didn't recognize my card, it didn't load
Xserver-svga. I used apt-get to get it, and now it's fine. Thanks.

One more problem, though: since the setup program didn't have a video
driver to work with, there was a bunch of package software that didn't
install. Now that I am up and running, I'd like to try to install it.
Apt-get is fine if you know what you need, one package at a time. But how
can I get back into the package installation program (or something
equivalent) to find out what I lost and what I need to reinstall?

Sorry for stupid newbie questions. I'm trying to read the manual, but it
seems you need to know the commands you're looking for before you look them
up.

Keith

Password problems

2001-02-03 Thread Keith & Cecile Schooley
This is going to sound like an asinine problem, but here goes ...

My machine seems to have forgotten my password.

Yes, I said my machine. Not me. I've had it burned into my consciousness,
through booting up about a hundred times (successfully) today.

I finally got a problem with getting my video card recognized, but when I
tried to log back in, I couldn't get in either by my user name or as root.

Any suggestions on why this would happen?

Is there any possible way to deal with this, other than to reinstall the
whole system?

Grace and peace,

Keith

SiS 5597/5598 Video Card

2001-02-03 Thread Keith & Cecile Schooley
I recently installed Potato (first time using Linux). I have a SiS
5597/5598 video card, which anXious did not recognize.

The installation manual (Section 2.1.2.3) says that the Debian CDs ship with
XFree86 3.3.6
http://www.debian.org/releases/2.2/i386/ch-hardware-req.en.html#s2.2 )

XFree86's website says that XFree86 3.3.6 supports SiS 5597/5598
http://www.xfree86.org/3.3.6/SiS2.htm#2 ).

So why didn't anXious recognize it? How do I get video support?

Thanks for help in advance,

Keith

Installing XFree86 3.3.6

2001-02-03 Thread Keith & Cecile Schooley
I installed a new set of Debian CDs recently, only to have anXious not
recognize my video card, a SiS 5597/5598. After a little research, I found
that XFree86 3.3.6 should support the SiS 5597/5598 card, so I downloaded
the files from them. Then, on trying to install, I received a message
saying that my system appears to use an a.out binary system, which is not
supported by this release of XFree86. On the XFree86 website, I am told
that "Elf is the only binary type supported for Linux OSs."

All this stuff is new to me. How can I deal with this problem?

Keith
