Klaus that is exactly the type of software I'm looking for; Unfortuantely I
can't use KDE nor do I want to install it's libs.

Does anyone know if there's anything similar in Gnome ? I've searched my
archive but can't find anything but command line tools. This is for someone
I'm attempting to introduce to Linux on the desktop from Windoze.

Thanks.

I have always used digikam on my linux box but picasa on OS X. You can give
picasa a try, I'm not sure if you were looking for something strictly gnome or
not.

Do you regard Vim a word processor, or is there something more?

It falls short of a modern Word-Processor, but it does everything I need
most of the time. According to wikipedia vi does not cut the mustered as
a word-processor.

Re: Iptables the "Debian" way?

2004-12-07 Thread Keith O'Brien
For information on setting up iptables under /etc/init.d/ you can check
out the file under "less /etc/default/iptables".

The writes own general feeling can be seen in the first q/a:
# Q: You concocted this init.d setup, but you do not like it?
# A: I was pretty much hounded into providing it. I do not like it.
#Don't use it. Use /etc/network/interfaces, use /etc/network/*.d/
#scripts use /etc/ppp/ip-*.d/ script. Create your own custom
#init.d script -- no need to even name it iptables. Use ferm,
#ipmasq, ipmenu, guarddog, firestarter, or one of the many other
#firewall configuration tools available. Do not use the init.d
#script.

I choose to ignore all of his warnings and use it. The machine its
running on is Woody. Not sure if the init.d script is provided in later
versions.

Here is a link in case you can't find it on your machine. Notthing
official so no guarantees:

FC HBA on Debian

2004-09-20 Thread Keith O'Brien
We currently use Emulex LP1050 cards(under windows). I didn't have any luck
getting the binary drivers they provide for RHE working under Debian. Didn't
find any info via google on using the emulex cards with debian.
Was wondering if anyone had luck getting the Emulex cards to work under
debian.

I'm looking into get the Qlogic FC HBA QLA2340 as a replacement for the
debian boxes.
http://www.qlogic.com/support/product_resources.asp?id=253

I'm leaning towards purchasing the Qlogic QLA2340, as qlogic has gpld its
drivers.
Any recommendations for a different FC HBA or feedback on the QLogic cards
would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Keith.

Insight Manager on proliant DL360G3 running Debian woody 2.4.24

2004-01-13 Thread Keith O'Brien
I'm trying to get the Insight manager to work on my dl360 running debian
(woody 2.4.24). I have been able to get the cpqhealth and storage agents
running using the below links.

Compaq Storage Agents - http://www.sk-tech.net/support/cmastor.html
Compaq Health on Debian - http://www.sk-tech.net/support/cpqhealth.html

However I can't get Insight Manager to work. The needed daemon is cmawebd,
provided by the hpasm package (which includes cpqhealth).
I've looked on the web for information about getting Insight Manager
(cmawebd) working with debian but didn't find any answerers.

Thanks,
Keith.

RE: making a floppy for essential modules

I'm in the process of doing the same thing for an HP-DL360.

Here is the websites I'm working off of:

http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/ch-boot-floppy-techinfo.en.html#s
-rescue-replace-kernel

I can't seem to get the kernel small enough to fit on a floppy.
Setup is 4651 bytes.
System is 1052 kB
warning: kernel is too big for standalone boot from floppy.
I'm still working on it so I can't provide much more help. GL

If anyone has install floppies for dl-360/380 with cciss driver could you
post a link.

Thanks,
