bootable CD (that was fun because of the size), and everythign works like a
charm when I boot from it, but I can't figure out how to get that image
 onto the hard disk.

One person has told me Knoppix is not intended to install.

After booting to Knoppix CD, find the root terminal in the menu. I believe at
that point you type either./knx-hdinstall or just knx-hdinstall.

the lsmod command shows nfsd, nfs and lockd. what did I do

Have you checked to see if the network card has been asigned an IP address and
that the network is up?
Do su and ifconfig to see. I network is up it should show an IP address
asigned to your NIC usually eth0.

 Hi Trey,

if all you want to do is extract the music data to files there should be
several programs to do that for you. cdparanoia is the one I prefer,
cdda2wav an other. Perhaps grip can be used to just rip the music
although it is intended for converting/compressing them to mp3.

Why do you want to do this, just to be able to play them without having
the cd inserted or to further process the songs?

 Best regards,
   Emil

Gcombust will rip a music CD and save to .WAV for you.
