Re: heaps possible of conf/multimedia/codec/xorg troubles

2008-07-08 Thread Lachlan
thanks, i'll give the log a look when i get home and see what i can find.
the vesa driver was one thing i forgot so i'll look into that was well.

this was my first ATI card and it's worked quite well for the 6 months
since i bought it. this last week has been the first major issue i've
had.

here is how i installed 8.9 on my fresh lenny amd64 install.
#GOTO http://shame.tuxfamily.org/repo/ and add to sources.list
#run the ati install choosing default options.
>sh ati-driver-installer-8-9-x86.x86_64.run

#run
>aticonfig --initial -f
#run
>aticonfig --overlay-type=Xv

#restart
test by opening terminal and running >compiz-manager --replace

if it works you have compiz

go to system>preferences>sessions
add compiz-manaer --replace as a startup program

this will make sure you can log in without compiz from GDM if you get
trouble.

i had lots of trouble with older ati drivers and non shame compiz repo's
but it all works like a charm now,

sounds like a netinstall or similar iso. telling us what version of
debian you are installing from will help.

i've had an install that wouldn't recognise my nic with the provided
kernel. you may need to download a base cd/dvd (which has the base
system and desktop) then upgrade.

kernel 2.6.27

2008-10-07 Thread lachlan
does anyone know if 2.6.27 will make it into lenny?

my wireless is a iwl5100 (intel wireless link 5100) and i haven't had
any luck with 2.6.26-1

as far as firmware in /lib and lame attempts at loading modules i'm lost
on it so i'm hoping that 27 is my saviour

ping hostnames ala windows ping.exe?

2008-10-09 Thread Lachlan
i've started using lenny for my work pc and there's a feature of the
windows ping.exe that i'm trying to find in linux.

something in windows i've used a lot is pinging by hostname to find
the ip of the pc i'm looking for.
a lot of things i've been doing require me to enter the ip not hostname.

i've looked at arping, sing and oping but i haven't had any luck
accepting anything other than ip's.

all i'm looking for is something along the lines of ~$ hostping
-usehostnames computerhostname
from the commandline.

i'll be using this laptop in a lot of different offices so will i have
to add dns info to my /etc/hosts and /etc/resolv.conf for each
network?

i am also running amd64

i got 2.6.27 running this morning but that's about it.
booted into gnome and didn't really know what to do after that. i used:

kernel source# make menuconfig
(made sure iwl stuff was added etc. saved as .config)
kernel source# fakeroot make-kpkg --revision=custom.1.0 kernel_image
kernel source# dpkg -i /home/user/src/linux-image-2.6.27_custom.1.0_amd64.deb
kernel source# mkinitramfs -o /boot/initrd.img-2.6.27 2.6.27

doublechecked menu.lst and rebooted.

i assumed that the wireless modules were in by default but i couldn't
see anything in the few minutes i've had a look around. (had to go to
work)

i also have no idea if my make-kpg is wrong but that's how it worked for me.

I have no idea about kopete but the best msn client i've used on linux
is emesene.

www.emesene.org

you can do everything in emesene that you can do with the actual
microsoft client. be sure to look through the plugins and turn on what
you want.

had heaps of visibility issues with pidgin, amsn and a few others but
none so far with this one.

are you running lenny?
what version of ati driver are you using?

if you're using the fglrx driver (which looks like it from your xorg)
have you had any luck by using aticonfig?

after you install the driver you run
$ aticonfig --initial -f
that will give you a clean xorg.

for me the newer xorg versions have picked up everything automatically.
so ditch the big xorg.conf if you can.

i run on a hd3870 and it's perfect using the ati 8.9 driver.
all i had to do to get 3d acceleration was install the driver and run
aticonfig. to get compiz i just added the

compiz "enable"

line at the end of my xorg.
i've attached my current file for you to look at if you need it.

simple home dns, dhcp server.

2008-11-03 Thread Lachlan
i been have tremendous trouble getting my network to see hostnames and
and other pc's. it will see everything randomly one day and then be
missing the next.

my idea to fix this is to have an old laptop (old as in i upgraded 3
months ago, running lenny but hasn't been updated since august) that
i'm thinking could be used as the network dhcp instead of my modem
(which i'm thinking is half the problem) this server would connect to
the internet with the modem and then give each system on the network a
dhcp address as well as provide an internel dns.

i've looked at guides that use bind 9 but it doesn't make a whole lot
of sense for what i'm trying to achieve. at least as far as i'm aware.
networking isn't my forte.

so is it possible to use a single nic laptop as a dhcp/dns server for
an internal home network?

if that is possible would moving my apache server to the same laptop
cause issues with the dhcp/dns config?

cheers

i had exactly the same problem.

when you run alsaconf get the names of all the soundcards it loads
when you select your card. blacklist the ones you don't use in
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

i kept having the ati hdmi and another card that i'm not even sure was
connected to my system blocking my actual sound card from being
detected at all.

the only way i could get my sound to stay without blacklisting the extra cards.

i use testing on all my boxes and when i have an issues with a broken
package i can always add the sid repo to get the package i want and
then comment them back after i've finished. this has helped me solve
dependency and other issues while keeping on testing.

For me testing has been really stable since early september. the last
big issue i had was with the proprietary ATI driver and my xserver on
a desktop at home.

i've even been running 2.6.27 on a laptop to get wireless without issue.
while it may not be debian stable yet, lenny is nearly there.

My vote is for vbox.

Virtualbox OSE has served me pretty well, i've run a couple of VM
boxes this year with 1-4 OS's running at a time for ages and had no
troubles.

Not sure about the proprietary version but the Open Source Edition has
kept getting better.

have you had any luck with a clean xorg.conf?

if you make a copy of your xorg.conf and run
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

that will clean up your conf file and after a restart the xserver will
choose the options for you.

i use the ati proprietary driver and regulary check the radeonhd
driver on my desktop and haven't had the same issues with a dual head
setup. it just worked without having to edit my xorg at all.

there is also an aticonfig --initial for the proprietary driver and
i'm sure nvidia must have something similar but i only have AMD and
Intel cards to test on.

the 'Laptop' option definetely won't hurt. i don't really see it as
needed in any way but you'll probably find something laptop specific

has anyone had any luck with open-iscsi? or is this version
incompatible with this kernel?
the lenny version requires an libc6 update and i'd be pretty worried
that upgrading that would destroy the dvc box, something i can't
really afford to do. i'm also not 100% whether this version of iscsi
supports the DVC kernel which may not help.

i had a lot of trouble in lenny with my HD3870 especially if i didn't
use the proprietary driver (google ati linux driver if you don't have
it)

boot into single user mode and set your xorg to use the vesa driver.
that way you can use your desktop and then look at whether
fglrx/radeon/radeonhd will work with your card.

the fglrx driver that worked best for me was 8.6 on lenny. (google
should help getting older drivers.)

if a driver has been set in xorg.conf you can also comment it out and
see if the xseerver will pick the correct driver, i can't remember if
x was very good at that with lenny.

SOLVED: update to xserver-xorg-core (2:1.6.1.901-3) killed performance

disabled UXA and it's okay again, looks like UXA (which was running
pretty well till today) is the culprit.

i'll do some more testing with UXA on/off but that's what fixed it for

if you're using compiz i'd edit out the composite "enable" section and try that

BUT

the big thing i see thing i see is that even with the uxa line
commented out your xserver still enables it on your system
"(--) intel(0): Using UXA for acceleration"

add the line
Option "AccelMethod" "exa"
to your xorg.conf and see if it changes back to exa acceleration

it looks like UXA may still be the culprit.

same here but i never bothered to look at that yet, my xserver has
been a little quirky this week.

logfiles for shutdown (gdm restarts after starting shutdown)

2009-06-30 Thread Lachlan
when i click on shutdown on my sid system it starts to shutdown and
then GDM will restart with the logon screen so i have to shutdown
again.

this only happens when i run shutdown from the menu and not from
pressing the power button.

is there a shutdown log i can check? it's a really weird behaviour.

you can also get there from the command line
nautilus-file-management-properties

and gconf has a setting as well
/apps/nautilus/preferences/always_use_browser

It's probably the easiest thing to forget because you'll set it once
and forget about it by the time you install again.

something tells me you won't be getting very much help if you have to

debian-user is not your private army... or something.

slink archive?

2001-01-09 Thread Lachlan Patrick
Is slink archived anywhere? A year ago I installed slink on
my venerable 486/8MB system and it worked like a charm.
Now, slink is apparently gone from the net, so if I just
want to install a few packages for my 2.0.38 kernal, how
do I do it? I'm a big fan of the "if it ain't broke don't
fix it" philosophy, and since my slink installation has
been so stable over the past year, I just want to add a
couple of packages to it without upgrading the kernel.
If I download the potato versions of these packages, dpkg
says "wrong version, buddy". Surely slink still exists
somewhere on the net??

Questions about Debian

2000-04-10 Thread Lachlan Robinson

To whom it may concern,
I am considering using Debian on my computer, but I have a question, is
Debian a GUI (Graphical User Interface)? I have installed and are using the
'basic' installation (from the 7 1.44 meg images), and it resembles an
x-term or DOS environment, and I was wondering (before I download the rest)
if the rest of the package has some GUI features.

Thankyou for your time!
Lachlan Robinson.

Installation: esd and latex?

2006-03-21 Thread Lachlan Patrick
Hello,

I've been installing a Debian 3.1r1 system, burning CDs
as necessary. So far I've only used CD 1 and 2 from the set.
I'm fairly new to Debian 3.1, and I've some questions,
and general feedback about the installation process.

NB: I had some trouble getting sound to work on my
Soundblaster Vibra 128 sound card under kernel 2.4.27.
When I switched to the alternative kernel 2.6.8 which is
also on CD 1 of the set, sound now works (well, artsplay).
For some reason the loaded module is es1371, not sb.

NB: I've read that neither esd nor arts are being maintained.
Q: If that's correct, is there something I should get instead?

NB: XMMS freezes when it tries to play a song.
Q: I just want to queue and play MP3s while I work. I read
about alsaplayer, but couldn't find it on CD 1 or 2.
Which, if any, CD is it on? Or is there something better?

NB: CD disk 1 had almost all the software I use daily (great!)
One exception is LaTeX (to make PDF doco).
Q: Which, if any, CD is LaTeX on? Its dependencies?

NB: I haven't installed my printer yet. OOo seems to only
list Postscript printers (but I could be wrong).
Q: Basically 'lpr' doesn't work, and being a total newbie
on printing under Linux I'm just looking for info?
(My printer directly connects to the PC, no network.)
   Which CDs have HP drivers?

NB: I used the normal XFree86 installation, but it
produced a default login screen with some weird
resolution like 416 pixels by 380 pixels.
I had to hack /etc/X11R6/XFree86Config-4 to get
it to use my Cirrus card at 800x600. Yet still
it scatters 'grey static' rectangles across the
login screen just before the login window appears.
Anyway, it works now apart from that static.
Q: Is there some better way of getting X to detect my
graphics card or tweak the settings apart from
   hacking the config file?

NB: I was very impressed with the clear Gnome setup.
It feels coherent. (Haven't tried KDE much yet.)
Q: Is there a way to randomly in real-time change the
background picture? I used to use "xv -root" under
FVWM2, but this method can only initialise the
picture used by Gnome, not change it while Gnome
is running (Gnome seems to cache the picture data).

NB: I have no ISP at home, and no DVD drive on the PC,
so all installation must be done via CD.

My general question is: how do I find modules on the CD set,
if I want to burn-as-needed? Is there a CD directory
listing somewhere on the net, or, better yet, a look-up
form somewhere which will tell me "if you want to install
package BLAH, you need CD 5 and also CDs 1 and 2 for all
the dependencies"? (I worked out how to add CDs to the
apt database after reading some man pages.)

Overall I found the installer pleasantly helpful and most
things just worked first time.

How to find software?

Hi,

I'm looking for LaTeX or alsaplayer.
Anyone have any idea which Debian 3.1r1 CD
these packages might be on?

Thanks to all who replied.

One other question: is there an up-to-date
Printing How-To somewhere? I need to get my
HP non-postscript inkjet working.

FYI: I sent an email a week or two ago to this
list which was somewhat wordy but did explain
that I need CDs specifically. But I got no
replies, probably because it was too wordy, so
I decided next time to send a much shorter,
more direct set of questions. Sorry for the
lack of context that time around!

For those curious about why I need CDs...
here's the wordy explanation.

My Debian machine is at home. It's not on the net,
so I needed to install from CD. I'm typing this
email from my work PC, which I can't mess with,
so I don't have Debian installed on it, so I can't
directly use aptitude to download packages.

I'm not a Debian guru; I just prefer the environ-
ment to Windows. In my spare time, I've written a
novel on it, using vi, LaTeX, ps2pdf (and python).
But much of my hardware didn't work, e.g. I wanted
to use the CD-drive to do scheduled backups, and
to be able to print, but I was using an ancient
version of Debian which didn't have all the
drivers or kernel modules. So I was stuck with
a dual-boot Windows solution, which was not
ideal. I'd rather not need to boot into Windows
ever! I decided to freshly install a more recent
version of Debian.

So, I downloaded ISO images, and just created
the first 2 Debian CDs. This proved to be more
than adequate to install a functional base
desktop system in under 2GB of disk, but a few
things were still missing. I didn't want to
create all of the other 12 CDs just to get a few
packages, so I thought I'd ask what CDs they
are on. Although I can use the web at work to
discover package dependencies, I didn't know
how to discover which CDs those packages are on.

In my case, the answer seems to be disk 3, and
the link http://www.debian.org/CD/jigdo-cd/#search
lets you search for specific files. So I now have
a two stage process I can use to find all the
dependencies, then find the CDs they are on.
(Since my PC's apt database only knows about the
first two CDs which it has been exposed to, it
had no way of telling me to insert CD 3 when I
want LaTeX. Indeed, there was no way inside
aptitude to select LaTeX... it's not listed yet.)
I didn't know this online search facility existed,
so I think that will solve my problems.

Thank you to one and all, and I hope this has
satisfied any curiosity.

Driver compilation question?

2006-06-04 Thread Lachlan Patrick
I want to get some devices working, but it seems I need to compile the
drivers for these particular devices.

Q: Is there somewhere that keeps compiled drivers for various versions
of the [Debian] kernel to save users from having to download all that
source code and fiddle around?

The drivers are:
- QuickCam Messenger USB (qc-usb 0.6.4 might work, AFAIK, but needs
kernel source to compile against!)
- S3 Unichrome Via (seems to need complete X-Windows source code tree to
compile against!)
- I'm using Debian 3.1r1 with kernel 2.6.8 (but could downgrade to the
other supplied kernel 2.4.27 if necessary)
