Read Cobol code, translate into SQL/PSM or your language of choice.

2011-06-29 Thread Leandro DUTRA
2011/6/29 John W Foster :

Because the community has switched to LibreOffice.

Perhaps by Oracle, the Apache foundation, IBM or whomever may be
interestested, not by Debian, unless some maintainer decides it is worth his
while.

> 3. What makes LibreOffice better than OpenOffice?

Community, which translates into development, support and bug fixing critical
mass.

For now, this holds true, with LibreOffice developing faster, deeper
and better than OpenOffice.org since Oracle, after Sun, declined to fulfill
their promise of involving the community in the development of OpenOffice.org,
and furthermore declined to get involved in the community aroung the Document
foundation and LibreOffice.

In other words, the .org in OpenOffice is a sham, and has been exposed
as such by the Document foundation and LibreOffice.

I would add that copyleft also makes LibreOffice better, but that is
at least slightly more controversial.

> Now I'm concerned that a
> large body of work covering several years will have to be 'ported' to a

No, indeed LibreOffice inherits the same compatibility and data formats as
OpenOffice.org does, and the community which defined the ODF is behind
LibreOffice today, not OpenOffice.org. Furthermore, the licensing model
behind both projects ensure it is easier for LibreOffice to follow
developments from OpenOffice.org than the reverse.

> Any rational comments are appreciated.

I hope I was rational, and clear, enough.

By all means SCSI is superior. USB won't get much data thru,
otherwise it is OK; but the Linux support isn't quite here yet.

Parallel shouldn't be used for anything besides printers. Even you

External VGA is not the issue, with LCD displays usually the

First thing to learn is that Emacs isn't a word processor (yet),
it is just a text editor -- but the best one, IMHO.

If you want strict M$ Word compatibility, go for WordPerfect,

No! Slink is frozen, that is, can get only bug and security fixes.
New features and new versions must be included only in unstable
distributions.

Since you are using Debian, you will probably have less risks if you
wait for the new kernel testing and integration. But there should be
no difference to the applications, since they interface not with the
kernel but with the C library, glibc 2.

One of the few things I really do not like in Linux is the mouse
interface. I hope this will be fixed soon, but for now there are at
least two different mouse drivers. One is the driver used by the X
interface, configured with xf86config or XF86Setup; the other is used
by console programs, called gpm and configured with gpmconf -- or
something like that.

Which of them you tried?

You were sure you installed the X server *before* running

The only X servers not available from Debian are the ones at
SuSe or the last version of XFree86 if there wasn't enough time to
integrate them into Debian. And manual edits to configuration files
should be avoided -- there are no real problems xf86config or XF86Setup
won't take care of. Provided you installed and specified the correct
X server.

Would someone knowledgeable at the list find what is the name of
the X server for the Diamond Stealth card or the S3 Trio chipset?

You use the ifconfig command. Use the

This only configures the running system. In order

the /etc/init.d/network file.

I do not know exactly which failures are these... but I
notice most of the problems with packages in the list are
because people aren't using the stable (hamm) version.

Sure you can use unstable (potato) or frozen (slink). But
they are not intended for general use, so in production or
end-use environments you shouldn't be using slink anyway. If
you use the distributions as they are intended, the stable
will be one of the best (more reliable, robust) Linux systems
available!

I would suggest that, as apt is still in development, these
failures in non-stable environments should be expected. But
based on the history of Debian, they will surely have been fixed
when slink replaces hamm as the stable distribution.

The X server has nothing to do with the monitor. I have

No, I think the original poster thought of a kind of hierarchical
grouping where each program/function would be the root of a little tree
detailing all its packages... something like

X-+-xbase
  |
  +-xservers

  +-xfonts

Anyway, this is a thread that could (should) be in the debian-devel

There is the apt package in development, all such new features

I agree. It's just that people keep asking for things every time,

It will only have kernel if you recompiled your kernel. If it is
module, check running modconf and looking in the "net" section.

ip-address hostname

Add a line here also. For the format, do:

man resolv.conf

"to grep" means getting the output of a command into the command
"grep", which will give only the lines containing the specified string.

Like:

ifconfig lo | grep "string-to-look-for"

You can always do a:

man command-name

to find about the "command-name" use and sintax. If you need only
remembering something you already knew, you can use:

command-name -h

Which will give you a command summary.

Besides exporting the user directories with NFS, you need to define
your users in NIS, NIS+ or something similar. The same service (NIS,

directories.

Never done that (there weren't many users nor machines enough to

No use trying to do that if the CD couldn't be found by the
kernel...

You could check the files under /proc.

And when you find the addresses, use modconf to reinstall the
driver. It will give you a chance to type any parameter after you
select the driver.

It should be fine *if* you won't do anything heavy in C. gcc is
about one of the most demanding apps if you start to compile big things
like gcc itself.

If you are going to learn C only there's no need to install g++.

Did you got past that 20-minutes message?

Isn't it Windows-only? If it says it needs Windows, better to
believe it.

Run
update-menu

If you still can't find asmixer, try typing
asmixer&
in any xterm (or similar windowed shell).

If asmixer isn't in your path, try
locate asmixer
That requires that you've installed dbupdate, which I think is part
of the GNU fileutils.

If you do not have locate, try:
find / -name "asmixer"

Please, people! dselect is free software, under GPL.

Instead of daydreaming about a thousand features, implement them
and submit the patches to the current maintainer!

The joke about Mozilla not being quite from
Netscape^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^HAOL is that Mozilla is the name of the strictly
free version of Netscape, which, if still copyrighted by Netscape, is
worked on by everyone. And as the license is free, even if it's
copyrighted by Netscape it is available for everyone.

If AOL stops supporting Mozilla, it was already released under
a free software license. So we (the free software community) take
over the development, and that's it.

Once something has been released, everyone who obtained that
thing legally still abide by the original license. No one can
impose on you modifications on the license terms you have already
obtained. So the software is free forever.

If you install it giving your home (or ~/local/) as root, won't it
install nicely under ~/local/ ?

It was just a suggestion... it's so much easier, and many people do
not know they can boot from it, so they install the operating system from
floppies in order to be able to use the CD later.

Anyway, there is so much more packages to install after you get the
OS (operating system) installed, that if you are in the US, Europe or
otherwise could possibly get a CD in a reasonable time frame, it will be
worthwile. Diskettes aren't reliable, you know. But all installation can
be done from diskettes, I myself did not have a CD when I did my first
installation.

I myself do not know much... other people in the list have more and
better knowledge than me. Anyway, no knowledge is enough without a full
description of error. So many little things can go wrong, from a physical
error in the diskette surface to a not-so-clear dialogue, that without the
details we are in the dark.

Anyway, what is the exact, verbatim message you get when the process
goes wrong? If you send this details to the list, I am sure someone will be
able to help.

When I asked you for more details, I intended to give other people
in the list who would read your answer better conditions of fixing your
problems, because I myself will not be of much help. So, you need to send
your answer to the list, not to me personally. That way other people with
the same problem as you will benefit as well.

Other details that would be important are the machine you have, its
configuration, and which version of Debian GNU/Linux you got.

Still hoping we can help!

First thing: never send attachments to mailing lists! Quote the
message instead, deleting all irrelevant lines.

Do you know you can just boot the CD? It's faster and far more
reliable...

If you do not have access to the CD, please note that we can only
help if we know exactly what's happening. So please send the error
messages, or prompts, you get verbatim.

Hope we can help!

Stuck with M$ Exchange.

1998-11-01 Thread Leandro Dutra
I work at a company which uses only M$ Exchange for email, and a
gateway to SMTP. I could install Linux on my machine, but would need
a piece of s/w to be able to talk to the Exchange server. Is there
any thing available?

TIA!
