I now found, where the problem is, but I don't understand it.
I recently changed my /etc/pam.d/passwd from

  password required pam_unix.so nullok obscure min=4 max=8 md5

to

  password required pam_cracklib.so retry=3 minlen=6 difok=3
  password required pam_unix.so use_authtok nullok md5

When changing back to the first I _can_ change my passwords.

Where is the problem? I _do_ have libpam-cracklib installed.
Did I forget to configure something?

can't change my password

2002-06-02 Thread Marco Herrn
Hi,

when trying to change my password with passwd I get the following error:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ passwd
Changing password for marco
(current) UNIX password:
passwd: Critical error - immediate abort

After entering my current pw it waits for 2 seconds then the error
message appears.
The same happens when trying that as root. Not even root itself can
change its password.

Where can be the problem? The minimum lifecycle of passwords is set to 0
days in /etc/login.defs

2001-08-18 Thread Marco Herrn
Hi

after trying to compile Berlin on my woody system I get the following
errormessage:

omniidl: ERROR!

omniidl: Could not open IDL compiler module _omniidlmodule.so
omniidl: Please make sure it is in directory /usr/lib
omniidl: (or set the PYTHONPATH environment variable)

omniidl: (The error was `No module named _omniidl')

I installed all packages that are mentioned in the Berlin-Src from sid.
Do I forgot something?

As far as I can remember there was a package called omniORBpy. Is that
right? A search for this package on the debian website didn't get me any
results.

Any ideas?

2001-08-18 Thread Marco Herrn
Hi,

I'm running a woody system but need to get a few packages from sid. How can
I achieve this without upgrading the whole system?
I want to upgrade via apt-get.

Do I only have to point my sources.list to a woody *and* a sid mirror? I
want that an apt-get upgrade only fetches woody packages.
But how do I call apt-get to fetch the packages I want from sid?

I tried memtest86 now (only with cache disabled, because I needed access to

It didn't find any errors.

But I will try the test with cache enabled and memtest, when I have the

After a second reboot everything worked fine.

But a few days later I had a similar problem, also on booting.
This was the message:

Unfortunately the screen suddenly blanked dfor some reason so I didn't have
the chance to copy the rest of the message. Thats the reason for the three

So what does this mean?
I think it is a hardware problem, but which? Is it a problem with my RAM?

I would be glad if someone could tell me.

Thanks in advance

exim configured with SMTP-authentication support?

2001-02-19 Thread Marco Herrn
Hello,

my e-mail provider (www.gmx.net) uses SMTP-authentication with cram-md5. I
use exim as MTA. But in the manual is written that SMTP-authentication is
disabled in the makefile by default. And because authentication doesn't work
I think it is disabled in the debian package. But I am not sure.

Does anyone know of that? Or just to find out myself if my binary supports
it?
I wrote to the package maintainer but didn't get any response.

Thanks in advance

To use the wheel you must add line for ZAxisMapping in your XF86Config.
Look at http://www.inria.fr/koala/colas/mouse-wheel-scroll/ That is a good
source for information how to get your wheelmouse working.

Maybe that's not the best recommendation for you, but if you use
enlightenment as your windowmanager (or want to give it a try) there is a
feature to zoom the current window to full screen via ALT+ENTER. This could
be suitable for your needs. But unfortunately this feature is disabled in
the current deb-package. The package master has promised to acivate this
feature in the next package version. For so long you have to compile it on
your own.
But maybe you just don't want to use enlightenment

Why doesn't enlightenment feature "zoom window" function under debian?

2000-12-17 Thread Marco Herrn
The "Zoom current window" feature of enlightenment doesn't work with the
deb-package of enlightenment. But my X-server does support it, because as I
installed and compiled enlightenment from the source-package, that I
downloaded from enlightenment org, it works with that version.

Is that feature not included in the deb-package?
How can I activate it, without compiling it on my own (that's not so good,
because I don't have the debian menu available then)?

Thanks

PPP Configuration

2000-11-04 Thread Marco Herrn
Hello,

I tried to configure my internet connection on my potato system via wvdial
an pppconfig, but neither of this works correctly.
When running wvdial, it starts the connection and holds it, but I cannot
access the internet (I tried it with netscape and lynx).
When running pon, it dials, but immediatly hangs up, dials again, and so on.

What did I forget?

And another question: The dialing tone with both tools is much too loud.
How can I adjust the loudness of my modem?

Many thanks
