When you compile them, they're made for the current running kernel, and won't work on any other kernel you try them on. Alternatively, you may check with lsmod to see if the module NVdriver is still loaded. If you didn't make it autoload on boot, you won't have the NVdriver module integrated in your kernel, and hence, your nVidia drivers won't work. -- Mathias De Belder -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". NFS-mount in Woody
Hi everybody! I'm having a bit of trouble with NFS exports in a standard Woody-dist. with the standard CD-image kernel named 2.2.20-idepci. I'm trying to export the directory ns1.knorca.se:/test (rwxrwxrwx) with the owner nobody.nogroup to the computer ns1 (that is export the directory to the computer who "owns" it) with read/write access. My exports-file looks like this on the computer "ns1": /test ns1(rw) When booting the ns1-computer I get this message: [cut] Exporting directories for NFS kernel daemon...ns1.knorca.se:/test: Function not implemented. done. [cut] and this in syslog nfsd[214]: nfssvc: Function not implemented Trying to mount the exported directory results in the following message: mount: ns1:/test failed, reason given by server: Permission denied with syslog saying: rpc.mountd: Authenticated mount request from ns1.knorca.se:853 for /test rpc.mountd: getfh failed: Function not implemented The hosts.allow and hosts.deny files are both completely empty, except for the standard comments. Even if I set exports-permission to * it does not do the trick. I suppose that the reason for this is that the nfsd-module is not compiled into the kernel. Therefore I tried to compile a new fresh 2.4.18-kernel, but it won't boot. I think I read something about inserting some parameters into lilo.conf to boot 2.4.x-kernels but I am not sure. Anyone interested to give me a hand? problem with installing debian
please forgive me if these are bad questions, but I'm new in Linux in general! I've got a powerbook 190cs i've downloaded debian from the FTP Mirror in Austria and I've started the installation! mac OS shuts down and linux starts, it checks several things. And then it hangs! the last outputs are: RAM disk driver initialized: 16 RAM disks of 4096K loop: registered device at major 7 ide0: Macintosh Poerbook IDE interface and thats the point where it still hangs! I've tried it serveral times every time the same thing Please help me! thanks a lot! Mathias Tradinik

LIDS will protect my kernel from root. libsafe does protect normal user daemons from root. from this point, i don't need libsafe. basically, it will be a minimum debian with full root access for everybody. i'll protect the basic things, but the system will run from an encrypted loopback image, so i can reset the whole machine in seconds.

If you deactivate every capability and have running it on a fully-featured system, it will give you a lot of stuff the daemons need and you have to configure. One reason because LIDS is great, you don't have to rewrite any source code to use it and every program uses it by default and it's mandatory. One thing i forgot (and found before): If a daemon can't run properly, it could, but it doesn't have to, that you could lose data (e.g. the daemon can't write to harddisk and it don't get handled properly). I never found myself in this situation, but be prepared if the system if fully loaded. Don't forget to protect lidsadm binary. This is the interface for supplying a password to deactivate the features in the kernel. The password can't be cracked directly (brute force or either) because of a trojaned lidsadm binary. But they [the attackers] could intercept the password with a trojaned interface. > Prior to doing this though, I am going to re-write my iptables firewall > to include NAT (masquerading) for my internal LAN and install libsafe. Give the openwall non-exex-stack patch a thrill. Many buffer-overflows (yet not every flavour is protected) will not work any more. Libsafe IIRC is good for the format string vulns, but if you can, protect it in the kernel. Fefe did a start on writting diet libc for a better protected libc: http://www.fefe.de/dietlibc/ > Then after setting up a DNS server on this box and squid, I will give > LIDS a go. And lots of learning :-) As said, you don't have to rewrite any programs. One hint further: if something [like a daemon] really doesn't work anymore, deactivate LIDS globally, restart and activate LIDS. Also don't forget to reload configuration and to update the inode/dev table if something doesn't work. > Thanks for all the time you have put into educating me. Much > appreciated. np.

LIDS is good for a true multiuser system, where root is the single point of attack and people have basic access. a true network OS (i mean e.g. for a router) probably doesn't need this security cause it can run independently from the other [users] and the main security stuff (e.g. paket filtering) is already handled by other means (directly by the kernel) and not that of a normal user concept. this good, this is evil.

Of course. Normal root doesn't have any capabilities in his login shell. Only the daemons have specified prviliges. This is fixed on a per exec*() basis which load the specific daemon from a fixed place (inode nr) from the media. > > Also it's probably generally not that a good (well thought out) idea > to transfer the security border from root_space <-> normal_user_space > to lids_protected_space <-> root_and_normal_user_space; there will be > security holes in LIDS too.. there are 3 stages, not 2. root is still living for the normal user. Of course there could be security holes, but check out the sources. This is a simple #ifdef CONFIG_LIDS ... if(!capable(CAP_SYS_RAWIO)) ... /* and the logging support */ ... #endif return -EPERM; LIDS itself is not a monstrous patch which real hardware-low-level changes. It operates (mainly) cleanly on the kernel-userland interface and the VFS. Capability support has been there a long time, but not mandatory.

So you get automatic a configuration, when LIDS is installed and running e.g. for samba, ssh and exim etc. It's some time ago since i was engaged in debian development can this be done easily? You can imagine that the initial configuration is like a ipchains rule. So i have to define several lidsadm rules which get added on package installation. postinst?

It would be *very* nice to have labor to test this stuff out. To effectively configure it, you must have a real world load on the machine where many users try to access their data. This was, for me, a hairy step. First, you download the patch. You patch the kernel and set configuration options. Then the usual compile run. After you setup up a LIDS protected kernel, you boot the system without LIDS enabled. This is option "security=0" (e.g. at lilo stage). Then you boot it. Set the password which protect your kernel from root. Then you set which capabilities should be enabled/disabled by the kernel. Then you set basic configuration. First, imagine what capabilities a daemon should have for the daemons that need additional access. This will never work from just imagine it. In the FAQ/HOWTO there are several examples of configurations for specific daemons and/or programs. If you wann be on the secure way, disable every capability that you don't need and don't configure any capabilties further. Configure it later on a per-need basis. Second, you set up basic mandatory ACL. Protect /etc, /bin, /usr and so on. This is well documented on the homepage and the LIDS distribution comes with good basic configuration. After you have a mini LIDS configured system, with basicly configured filesystem and daemons, you boot the system. Many daemons will fail to boot at this step (because e.g. they could not bind to port 80 'cause lack of access the capability CAP_NET_SYS_BIND_SERVICE). Try to login (hope, you have configured /bin/login properly). If something goes wrong, you can reboot with LIDS disabled and do admin stuff as usual. Setup LIDS logging (important). Perhaps remote or via printk/klogd (stuff goes to /var/log/kern.log) Now you can try to access some files/directories which you have protected or you try someting you disabled (e.g. try ping to access raw sockets). LIDS should generate an alert, even for root. Then you do a LFS (LIDS free session). Check documentation (as you should already really have at this stage). Start every daemon that could not be started at boot stage. Activate LIDS and monitor where the daemons fail to do their job. Configure the daemons with lidsadm. After the daemons run smootly in a configured LIDS, you set up them so they can start automatically. In my setup, i changed start sequence so every daemon which e.g. have to bind to a privileged port in single user mode. LIDS will be sealed at the finish of single user mode boot stage. Background: don't give daemons to much access if they don't need it really for daily business operations. Run the system with maximum protection and change perms on a per-need basis. After things go well, you protected filesystem and capabilites and the system runs with required security, you can fine tune it. "Does this daemon really need it for running? Can this file/directory be secured and everything runs well?" If you do it the first time, it will be a time consuming process to monitor it and to configure it properly. After experience grow, it will be easier and easier to secure your machine. The main purpose i use LIDS, is to protect the person who administrate the machine from the root user wich have to run service daemons. Cause in a properly setup system, these are not the same (with LIDS), i can sleep well bacause they [the attacker] will bite into stone, even they get root access. One very cool feature is to terminate session on violation. On thing access even which root should not have and you have your session terminated. > What happens when you do an apt-get > dist-upgrade - will it refuse to change the binaries you want to > upgrade? This depend. In an activateed environment, you login as root and upgrade, it will fail. The filesystem is in this situation protected even for root. If you disable it locally, say your current shell and child-processes have LIDS deactivated, it will work. With my version (i used it on 2.2) it will update the files without problems. Problems could occur on restarting the daemons. I had to disable it globally and restart the daemons by hand (and of course ractivate it later, say it's insecure). > Is something like Tripwire / AIDE better because it doesn't > stop root from changing/deleting files but will tell you later which > ones have changed. I use both. The access control lists are mandatory. This means they're compulsory even for root. In an normal kernel, discretionary control is used, which mean root can evade it. LIDS protect from actually restricted access and, this is very nice, have a logging facility wich report every policy violation. So, a

Hmm, this looks like a dependence problem. You should make shure that the packages you like to install are build for your system (potato/woody). There are some differents like glibc-2.1.3 in potato and glibc-2.2 in woody that makes ist impossible to merge these packages, except you like to compile those packages for your system. Mathias

My meaning for this is: The kernel image is not axactly working on your system. That something like this happens is normal if you try to run software that is not really ready to call it stable. I mean the most problems of kernel 2.4 will be overcomed at version 2.4.10. you should look whether you need comx.o. If not, try modconf to delete this module in your configuration. Typing # grep -n COMX .config in kernel-sourcetree will give you the position of this in .config file which you can edit with # vi +123 .config 123 means the number of line which grep showed. Then you can look at config file in which menu section you can select this module where you can go to read the help text. If you will try again to compile the kernel you should use first a minimal configuration. Some supports in Lodable module support, Processortype, General setup, Block devices, Networking options, ATA/IDE or SCSI support and Character devices should be enough to get a bootable kernel. And then you can add step by step all others, you need for your hardware. Mathias

I think you shold look whether your new kernel is booting. The new vmlinuz should be in /boot or if you made no changes in sourcetree/Makefile in /, your root directory. If vmlinuz is in /boot you have to make shure that your /etc/lilo.conf lokes like mine : default=Linux image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.0 label=Linux read-only image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.18 label=old read-only other=/dev/hda2 label=dos Then you can be shure that your new kernel will be used at boottime. With this, your new lilo configuration will be written into MBR. Mathias

Sorry, i gave too less information. I tried the noipdefault option, and also 0.0.0.0:0.0.0.0. I also tried nodefaultroute, but all that didn´t change anything. What options do i have to fill into hots.allow? I even tried ALL: ALL, but i suppose that isn´t very safe, is it? Re: ASUS A7V problem
Hi! I´ve the same board installed. You just can boot either Windows or from your Debian CDs. In windows use the Systeminformation programm (win98) to finds out the E/A and IRQ Values the controller uses. The same things can be looked up under Linux ind the /proc/pci file, which i find is more clear to see. I use the biggest and the third biggest E/A numbers. When you have got these numbers you type into the linux boot prompt: linux ide2=0x, 0x, (at my system linux ide2=0x8800, 0x8000, 10) after that the kernel should be able to find the hdd. You can append this line to your lilo.conf. Take care with new PnP devices. I installed a new soundcard after linux was running, and the E/A values of the Promise controller had been changed, and i couldn´t boot linux again until deinstalling the card, booting linux, disabling or changing the append line in lilo.conf and booting with the new values. Harddisk controller _almost_ solved!
Hi! Sorry, i'm late, but i haven't had time to try. Here' is how i worked out. I also use the Asus A7V. I plugged the Harddisk into hda, booted from CD, installed Linux and checked the I/O of the Promise controller. Then i replugged the hd back into the ATA-100 controller and booted like you described with the actual numbers from my board. The next thing i'll try is to use the patch from www.linux-ide.org. Is the speed the system accesses the hd now the same as when I use the driver from the patch? Thanks to everybody for all the help. Harddisk controller
Hi everybody! I've got a problem with my new computer, which has a Promise Ultra 100 harddisk-controller built in. My debian 2.2 Distribution doesn't recognize it, so I can't use the harddrive. I've got some kernel Patches for Red-Hat which were delivered witch the machine. So now i wonder how i can get this working. I have linux already running on another computer. Should I try to patch the kernel from my debian system, and try to boot with this one from a floppy, and then start the CD-installation? I hope anyone can help me. Thanks. Mathias
Re: C2 Certification
from http://www.radium.ncsc.mil/tpep/library/rainbow/5200.28-STD.html "The Trusted Computing Base (TCB) of a class (C1) system nominally satisfies the discretionary security requirements by providing separation of users and data. It incorporates some form of credible controls capable of enforcing access limitations on an individual basis, i.e., ostensibly suitable for allowing users to be able to protect project or private information and to keep other users from accidentally reading or destroying their data. The class (C1) environment is expected to be one of cooperating users processing data at the same level(s) of sensitivity." and "Systems in this class enforce a more finely grained discretionary access control than (C1) systems, making users individually accountable for their actions through login procedures, auditing of security-relevant events, and resource isolation." Orange booke certification is a testing process of a hardware and software combination - the whole system has to interact to provide all of the required security of the rating. This means that the kernel and drivers cannot allow direct interaction between a user and hardware, things like that. The requirements are all at that website, in techno-bureaucratic. Hardware and software can be tested independantly, but not OSes or complete boxes. lots more on the site... Mathias
Re: sloooooow apache
Well, I don't know apache, but you might want to see about placing these restrictions in tcp wrappers rather than in apache - if you have tcp wrappers installed, read the man for hosts.deny and set up an http deny for all but those 30 clients. You're only moving the overhead around rather than eliminating it, but it could be that tcp wrappers deal with the overhead more efficiently. Like I said though, I don't know apache, this is just a guess Mathias

Money, at this level, really isn't the issue, but I don't > want to spend extra money on a switch if it's overkill for a small > network and doesn't really buy me anything. Getting a basic 100Mbit/s hub will be pretty cheap for a 4-8 port nertwork. Going with a switch, even the most basic, will start to run to the thousands. It's far more efficient with the traffic, but unless you plan on having a very busy network sending huge chunks of data around in a hurry, a hub should work fine. Mathias

You should also look at the output of ps aux and make sure that you have no network daemons running on their own. If there are network daemons running without being told to by inted, find out where they're starting up and keep them from starting up. Another useful thing is a port sentry. Just something to watch to see it you're being portscanned. There's one called Abacus (IIRC) that's pretty nice and will throw potential intruders into wrappers. Good luck with securing your box, Mathias

NCR scsi problems with buzz boot kernel
Hi! I got that "Debian Linux 1.1" CD from iConnect when I returned from my summer vacation... I have an ASUS SP3G Motherboard with an ISA ET4000 video card (which already brought me lots of trouble in the past with the Setup preset value of the NCR Chip's IRQ being the same as the ET4000's IRQ). Changing the NCR Chip's IRQ to 11 solved this in the end... OK. The "buzz" stock boot kernel seemed to have no NCR SCSI support. I then discovered the MAKE_FLOOPIES script and choose "NCR53C7/8xx" from the MAKE_FLOPPIES menue. Booting that kernel gives: scsi0: bus busy, attempting abort and the kernel hangs/waits after that. This is more than nothing, but... I had (and still have) no trouble booting the 1.2.13 kernel from my former Slackware installation. Any suggestions, then? Thank you very much. Best wishes Mathias Bartsch
